Giggling and bouncing about, Varmint nodded her dark-speckled head, looking at the landmarks that Kiefer had pointed out. It seemed simple enough, but weaving through those woods would be a pain in the rump if she didn't see it coming first. She already knew how much it hurt to run into a tree.
"Alrighty! On your mark.... Get ready...", she whispered, her own body getting into a stance to run off. "GO!"
With that word, and only a second after, the little filly was off, leaving behind a small cloud of dust in her wake.

Kiefer took off as soon as she said go, bursting forward with all his strength, taking a few secounds to stumble before he managed to get proper footing. He felt the wind whipping through his mane for a few moments before he burst into woods.
Ohh...this would be tougher then he imagined. The skidded on leaves and had small brush bite at his ankles, and the trees nearly hit him. He couldn't keep up his pace weaving like this: he didn't want to fall.
"I'm.....gunna......win!" he huffed in an attempt to intimidate her. It didn't sound particularly convincing, taunting and running at the same time were tough. He couldn't tell weather she was ahead or being him: he could only see what was directly in from of him...and right now...that was...a tree!
He crashed into it, a painful blow. He momentarily saw nothing, but then struggled to his feet before he could even understand what happened. This would, he hoped, be his only fall of the race. A set back for sure. He hadn't gotten over his colt clumbsyness that the girls seemed to get over so much faster.
There was still a large strech of woods left: all that and he wasn't even half way there!

Weaving with maticulous ease through the rough woods, Varmint's yellow-white eyes watched everything that came within their view, trying extremely hard not to run into anything. These woods were a lot more cluttered than she had originally thought, and a lot of the ground below her was quite rocky. Not only that, tree roots were sticking up everywhere she went, making her jump over them like mini hurdles.
As her dark body blended in with the darkness of the woods, she could easily see the bright, yellow body of the racing colt. His mane and tail were waving violently as he raced through, his green eyes watching every coming obstacle, just as hers were.
"No... You won't!", she huffed out as well, only trying to intimidate him back, already getting tired of running. These woods extended quite a ways back, and so far, there was no light at the end of the tunnel.
Suddenly, as she had just jumped over a large tree root, she heard a loud noise behind her, her hooves trying to skid to a stop, only making her fall over an upcoming tree root, hearing a slight snap behind her. That's when a slight amount of pain hit, right in her back, left leg. Cringing, she looked back, seeing her ankle bent kinda of awkward. Still, despite the pain, she managed to get up and slowly walk back towards the first sound she had heard, hiding behind the trees, only her mane and tail clearly visible.
"Kiefer... He's hurt... But he's continuing to race... I need to too... Ugh..."
Looking ahead, the woods were only darker, as she had gone back some. This would definitely be a long race...

Kiefer looked backwards for a moment as he heard a crash...Mint had gotten hurt as well. He whipped his head back to look, and had to do a last-secound turn in order to avoid crashing straight into a tree. He ran into a thorn bush because of it, and a few thorns stuck into his leg.
Who knew racing was so...violent? He could almost see the end now...hopefully Mint wasn't to hurt. Kiefer ran through a group of small trees: the thin branches smacked him in the face.
He always found himself with this sort of mentality: if he just ignored the dangers of the present, he could work them all out when it was over. Not the best mentality, but it was his nature.
His thin legs kept pulling forward....he was vaugly aware to the fact that his ankle was throbbing. His leg was bleeding a bit from the thorns, but it would scab over in a few minutes, he knew, and his face had a few scraches from the branches. But hey, he was still going! So why stop now, in the home strech?

Seeing her golden friend get up and already start to dash off, Varmint decided to do the same. This race would never get finished if the two of them didn't finish it together, so she had to keep moving, regardless of her hurt ankle.
So, pushing herself to move, the dark-speckled filly began to run through the woods once more, coming upon a few obstacles that she now found hard to manage. She had to stumble over tree roots instead of jumping over them, and for some reason, tree branches were hitting her in the face now, which must been that they were a heck of a lot lower. Ugh.... Such a pain they were!
Well, even though the woods were becoming much more hard to navigate through, Varmint knew she had to reach the end. She couldn't just come in here and then stop half way through. That just wasn't right! She had to finish... She just had to!

Kiefer saw the ending for the race very close, he could even see the ending rock! The little cult tried to surge forward, but only managed to move a bit faster, his little frame could only move so fast.
Moment's later he broke through the final group of trees. The rock was only feet away, so close....but he knew Varmint must be right on his tail. Or in front. He couldn't tell. It was if is vision was blured to everything exept for what was directly in front of him. The race would be over soon...but who would win?

Pushing and pushing herself, more and more, Varmint was able to get her own body moving, despite her hurt ankle that tried its best to slow her down. As she dodged some more low tree branches and skittered over some roots that wanted to trip her, she too could begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel, or forest in this situation.
"There it is!", she shouted with joy, a surge of energy fleeting through her body like a bird that had too many berries. "I've gotta get to the end! I'm so, so, so close!"

Going....going...There! He was at the rock! He was over the rock...he was behind the rock, on his side. Whipe out.
He had ran as fast as he coulds straight torwards the finishing point, not realizing that he should have started to think about stopping at some point. The little colt had ran straight into it, flipped over it, and landed on his back.
Owwww. That was...painful. He moaned, trying to get up a bit, but lacked the will. He wasn't really hurt...little foals like him were just built to take falls like this. He would probubly just need a secound to gain proper concious.
THe world started to sharpen up a bit instead of being a blur of colors. Where was Varmint? Had he won? Had he lost? Had he made of an idiot out of himself?

Trailing only about a minute or so behind, Varmint came running into the clearing, still favoring her hurt ankle. All excited, with her major adrenaline rush, she ran over to the rock, steering around it, but not seeing Kiefer in the way, and ran right into him.
SMACK!
The next thing the little filly knew, she was on her stomach, staring at some grass and side of something brown and a golden yellow. With her eyes slightly rolling in her head, she shook about, trying to regain her focus on things.
"Woah... And owwie..."

Just when Kiefer thought he wouldn't have to be hit or run into things, and that it would be safe to just lay down and rest... BAM!
Mint ran RIGHT into him. Oouuuch.
He moaned again, rolling over to face her. "Watch where you're going, will ya?" he said, but not in an entirly mean tone. He could related to not having very good control over one's body.
"Looks like I won!" he teased, getting in fear of another thing hurting him. Who knows, a branch would probubly fall on him at this rate. He didn't want to rub in his victory too much, papa had always told him that he would impress others more if he was humble in vicotory and defeat then if he acted like a brat in losing and made a big deal when he won.

"Sorry about that... And yes, you did win. Still though, I would of beat you had I not hurt my ankle.", she teased, sticking her tongue at the golden colt. "Good race though. I had a lot of fun."
She giggled some, scrambling to her feet, up and out of the way, already feeling bad about having ran into her new friend. As she stood, she felt pain surging through her back, left ankle, making her weak in the knees.
"Owwie... That really hurts..."

"Yea, probubly" he said with a grin, deciding to not mention that he had gotten quite a few bumps and bruses too. Anyway, her injury was probubly worst, and he was too determined to even realize that he had gotten hurt.
He looked down at her ankle. It was swollen already, but didn't look like it had any long term injurys. Probubly would hurt for a few days, though.
"Try just going on three legs for a bit.... it isn't that hard.." he lifed up his back left ankle, just like her's, and walked around useing only three. It was a bit more difficult, but certainly not impossible.

"I'll... Try..."
Hobbling some, she got into a comfortable position and slowly raised her hurt leg, steadying herself on her other three. At first, she was fine, but the second she tried to walk, she began to fall over, putting her hurt leg back down to brace herself, only making it hurt more in the process.
"Owwwwww.... I guess I'll need... To practice some... Huh..?"

Kiefer laughed. Even though he knew it was mean, he couldn't help it. It was funny to see others have as much trouble as he did most of the time, for a change.
"Yea, it will take some work, and I betcha as soon as you get the hang of it, it won't hurt anymore" he joked, starting to get more confident in his little three legged walk, and tried to run. That didn't work so well, he fell right down.
"Ok, so it is a bit hard." he admited, getting up. "But it will probubly stop hurting soon. Do you want to go put it in the cold brook near here?" he suggested. Whenever Kiefer hurt one of his hooves or legs his mama would take him down to a cold brook or river to put the leg in. It was real cold but it made the pain go away.
