Unromantic_Phantom Actually, his name means "eternal king". That depends on what country of origin you're deriving the meaning. For example: Scandinavian=ruler of all, English=brave ruler, and German=peaceful ruler. That and depending on which source you are consulting for the meaning. Anywho, I always believed that he was never given a true name. That he was either given the name of Erik on his travels or took it for himself. Yes, the french were catholics, but I think it is within possibilty that if he mother though he was a devil child, or demonic creature, she would not give him a name at all. If you were a heavey catholic, would you clam a devil's spawn as your own by giving it a name?

That's a good point. Oh, and btw, I looked in my book (kind of re-read it. again. starting to scare my family... twisted ) anyways, I looked in my book and it didn't say anything about Erik's origin, so he may or may not be French. If anyone finds evidence against this, post it, please!
Chapter: Apollo's Lyre (page 95 for some) ' I asked him what his nationality was and if that name of Erik did not point to his Scandinavian origin. He said that he had no name and no country and that he had taken the name of Erik by accident.'
By accident I was speculating that he was somehow mistaken for someone named Erik, and just never bothered to correct it.

I took it that he wanted something for Christine to call him, so he took a name for her to call him. Either that or his mother, upon seeing him, couldn't stand to give him a name and someone else gave him a name.

IlovetheAngelofMusic I really like that name... he said he found it? (still reading the book, but is almost done) Well, Leurox didn't give any explaination to it and I think it would be weird to trust a fan author so sticking to the text... we can just assume he got it during the gypsy or persian thing... Anyways at least he has a name so we don't have to keep calling him "The Phantom". This is the name meaning- Erik- honorable ruler Sounds like Erik huh? biggrin whee In his persian days he was known by a name that meens "Trap door Lover" so he got it before then.

according to Leroux's novel, he may have been French, or he may not have been. It tells almost NOTHING about his background.

"according to the persians account, Erik was born in a small town not far from Rouen" this is all we really know, but we have no proof he had any french blood in him.
