This is an excellent guide, great work.
I have to say I have been guilty of the "dead parents" thing on an occasion or two. I do have an excuse, though -- the characters in question were over 50. ninja

Damn... Reading over this, I just realized how thin most of my characters are for RPs when it comes to depth... My applications have atleast once (collaborated) fallen for every wrong in this guide, save for over-romanticism...

Well learning's always good ^^.
And I just added some stuff to the roleplaying section, which I will probably have to edit after I have some sleep in me ^^.

I like the addition very much.
Sometimes I find myself skimping out on detail, both in setting and in character.

Detail... I didn't usually add much detail for a few reasons. A) I usually wanted to keep a post as concise as possible. B) I figure, the other person( or people) doesn't care what my character feels inside so I mention only clearly visible actions if and when they're visible by other characters.
For example. If my character is a wayward craftsman who's sanding a wooden statue while walking a good distance of say fifteen to twenty feet ahead of the party. I would only mention that he's showing slight movement in his arms or that he appears to be manipulating an object, rather than state that he's joyfully sanding and buffing a small sculpture of a hand clutching an arrow when his comerades are within five to three feet of him.
I don't know, I've seen too much metagaming from some people in the past.

I forget the exact terms/mechanics for the different viewpoints, but your version seems to essentially be approaching roleplaying from a different one. I wrote my guide in the assumption that roleplayers are writing from inside their character's heads to some degree (or possibly without thoughts but still from their character's point of view), whereas your style appears to be writing from the other character's point of view in a sort of way, if you only describe what they could possibly be perceiving...
I see how that takes care of the metagaming thing, though hopefully you'll find some players with whom that won't be an issue. With or without direct thoughts, though, emotions and various other interesting things can still be shown quite awesomely, so whatever floats your boat ^^.

This has definitely helped me in being a better role-player. I just have one question. How did you have time to type that whole guide?

I didn't really, I just really wanted to procrastinate on my homework XD.
And I added a few things to it just now, by the way ^^.

ya know, it's kinda funny. I have plenty of characters with some real background, but either I don't use them because they're too damn powerful or I use them but I'm too lazy to put enough background on them. (Also some of that background would point out how absolutely broken they are.)
I'd try to make an RP where some of my good characters would fit in but...

I had an insight about character naming.
It applies to more elvish characters, because it deals with combining word to form a last name. I will show an example of how using certain words can create different and possibly conflicting meanings depedning on who is reading it.
Consider the last name of a generic villainous character: "Shadowbane." The term bane was never meant to be combined with other words, because it can cause confusion. This last name could mean that he is the bane of all who oppose him, also mentioning his shadowy aspects (Shadowy-bane). The same last name could also carry the meaning that he is the opposition of shadows (Shadow's-bane). The second meaning would seem strange for an evil character, now wouldn't it?
I'm not sure if this really qualifies as anything of importance, but I just thought of it.

I think it's fine and dandy, but you'd be better off asking that in the OOC thread ^^.
