My characters as well as the story I'm writing has told itself all the way. I've found that I tried to write it one way and it just didn't work. In another story I'm putting together, one of the characters gets killed. I tried and tried to write it another way so that he would live because he's one of those characters you just like a lot. But no matter what I did, the character died and it just didn't come out right when I tried not to kill him.

Another example is a character in my Misfitopia story, Terra. I tried to write him so that he made a joke or something, but that wasn't the way he wanted to be written and so it didn't work out the way I wanted it to.

I started out with a character that was supposed to be omenous/serious...and he ended up a cheery, optomistic person who always seemed to be pointing out the obvious. He was wise though.

Yeah, that sort of thing seems to happen a lot. I mostly just edit my characters according to the plot, but the characters themseleves influence and change the plot, too. But it keeps thing interesting :3

Not sure if I should be putting this in, but in my opinion it is sort of boring to write a character whose personality and history are just made up by you. I think that it's way more fun just to write out how you think he might react instead of typing a well-thought out response for him. It's cool to learn about your characters as the story goes along; that way you can see how readers will see your character. If you know all of his quirks and everything you can't clearly see him the way others, who are just meeting him, will. *sigh* Just another one of Cali's Rants.

Almost all my characters write themselves, and sometimes I need to reign them in, or at least come up with explainations for why a formerly impulsive character is now calmer and more thoughtful. The problem with characters who write themselves is the tendency for them to appear OOC, especially when they suddenly change a core aspect of their personality halfway through a story Dx

I think my characters show me how they've developed (or are going to develop *__* ) as characters, rather than me determining how they should change.

@Tenshi & Cali - You both have good points. But as the phrase goes, moderation (or "medium") is key. I think to have a well-written character, someone that really comes alive off the page, they should have a basic outline, but their personality/actions should color themselves in... if you get what I mean sweatdrop

I think you have a point as well, but if you write too many impulsive reactions, it could entirely ruin your story (that is what happened to my last five attempts to write a book). So I'm with Sachi - moderation or medium is the key. Take wisdom from Aristotle ... if you take my meaning.

By the way, I was hoping some one would make a post like that in this thread. That is partly why I made it.

Hm. My reactions aren't really...impulsive, per say. They're just more realistic than when I have to actually think out what they have to say in great detail, proofread it, change things around, proofread it again, and then try to make sense out of it all later when I have no clue what's just happened. I take a realistic view on life and on my books. I just refuse to have think of what my characters should say before I type it all out. I try to make it all seem natural to the character's personality. It's just my style though. It's what I did with my story here, In My Own Sweet Time. Ugh, now I don't really like that name anymore. Ah! I did it again! I'm ranting! I'll stop now, I promise. sad

Go ahead, rant. It is the only way these conversations get anywhere.

I like to take a realistic view on my books and characters too, espiecally in the way of how they ended up the way they are. Rio and Kerry had pretty much the same history at first, but they are quite different in attitude towards life and other people. Hiro seems like an idiot, yet one of his alternate personalities can't stop ranting about the things he knows. Cinel never talks loudly. Priestist is ... Priestist. Once their personalities were in place, I set up back stories to go with them. That was fun.
