"Safety is something that is very important to both foals and their mother." He nodded slowly, recalling the herd he had been a part of. "In my herd..." It seemed so strange speaking of them but it was something that he must do; a part of the healing process. "In my herd the mares protected the foals while the stallions protected them both."
He paused for a moment, turning to look at the mare. "Perhaps..." He shook his head. No, it was not his place to ask such a thing. Nostalgia was a strong mare and, certainly, she didn't need the presence of a stallion to raise her foals even if their father was nowhere to be seen.
"Perhaps I am a different stallion now." He chuckled as he began to move alongside her once more. "It was, at least in part, due to our last conversation. I did much thinking. I realized... She wouldn't have wanted me to search the plains for those responsible for what happened to our herd. She would have wanted me to find happiness... To live as I would have had she remained beside me. She..." He sighed softly. "She wouldn't have known the stallion that you first met, Nostalgia."
