I never got to work tech in high school because of a little accident involving myself and a stack of the old gels, you know, the real glass ones...... But once I got to college, I just jumped in and started learning stuff. And, yeah, at the beginning, I was pretty useless. I didn't know any of the tools, and pretty much, all I was good for was painting. But now I can do it all. The guys really took me under their collective wing, and had a lot of patience with me. Sure there are some builds I have to have explained to me, but they do it, and then I get it done. There are only three girls who work in the shop. One of them is completly useless, one is a hard core tech girl, and the other is me.

I've been doing tech since I was in high school...it's been about 12 years...I've stage managed about 20 shows or so and have been lighting, sound, ASM, props, and design crew...I guess I've done pretty close to everything...and I have to say that the majority of my crews were 60/40 in favor of females...hahahah...

even though I'm currently performing in the musical Once Upon A Mattress, I'm a techie at heart. Besides this production, for four years, (every year having 3 major productions and one small one) I've done tech for every one. Whether it's construction, run crew, lights, sound, flys, stage managers, technical director, tech manager... the list goes on. heh. I just love being a techie so much! I'm the so called "tech guru" who trains others.
hehe. I just keep rambling because I'm new to this guild, and wanted to meet others with the same interests!

I love tech work, but I really am in my element when I'm acting. Tech does fill in the long hours between shows, though. And hey! If it gets me class credit, I'm not going to complain.
I'm more of a builder, really. I take pride in saying "you see the partitions on the upper deck? I made those." or "Like the wood grain effect on that walnut brown? I painted that." There's a sign of a techie. When you can go into Sherwin Williams and tell them exactly what color you want without looking at the paint chips.
Worst tech job ever, I have to say, though is CURTAIN FOLDING! UGH I hate it. The curtains we use can be anywhere from 50 to 150 pounds and the cubbies they belong in are not exactly within reasonable human reach. Unless you can bend your knees the wrong way. xp

We do most of the same jobs, but our school would never even think about giving school/class credit for it. We're barely thanked. But us loyal members do it since we just love to do so. Hahaha, I do the same thing! I tell every single person I see what exactly I made or painted. Curtain folding? You mean the red velvet curtains? I don't believe we've ever take them down. One side alone would weigh more than a ton. I can't even imagine getting enough people to fold one side. One side would probably cover half our football field.

Our techies are all girls because it's an all girl's high school. Oh how stunning. All our male actors are gifts from our brother schools, and last year our handy dandy giant-set building man graduated, so this year we built our own mega-extravagant sets on our own. Last play, we had a three story house on our stage, which has no fly space. Hanging and focusing for that was crap, especially since I had to butcher the cyc lights to get light in the attic. >.< Ugh. But it was teh pretty.

How about a question, as most of the techies seem to be in university. Exactly what does one do to major in technical theatre?

talleyrand How about a question, as most of the techies seem to be in university. Exactly what does one do to major in technical theatre? well, even though im in high school at the moment ive studied up on this. 3nodding several colleges have set design and theatre tech classes that you can take. USC has a very good thechnical program that you can take. you can even major in something like set design and minor in something like set building or theatre lighting. 3nodding

Omg, never though I'd meet another. Now I've always been confused with the USC thing; is it Santa Clara, or U of Southern California? o.0 Just out of curiosity.

I'm another one of those actor/techies. I'm better at the acting side but I've done enough tech to enjoy it just as much and to respect the techies when I'm performing. The thing that makes me the most upset is when the actors get mad at techies for "not doing it right" when I know that that was how it had to be. lol yup I rarely get frustrated with techies if they know what they're doing. I love them!!! and I've known my share of hardcore techie girls. In fact one year we only had girls except for the one boy who had graduated and came back randomly to help with lights or something.
