Zaniel, while amused by the way his ear appeared facing the wrong way, frowned, obviously confused. He leaned in to peer at the damaged ear, frowning noticeably. "It looked a little better than it did before," he said thoughtfully, eyeing the ear. This was odd. Maybe if he was focusing on the mental image a little harder.

As always, it took a woman's touch to fix things. "How sure are you that you can fix it?" Dessa asked. She gave Varian a piercing look. Really, she had been about to ask him to do it again, but the redness in his cheeks told her he was embarassed. Embaressment meant he had less confidence in himself, which meant his power could be manifesting... improperly. She had had similar problems.

"Very sure."

The way his cheeks reddened even more, however, suggested the opposite. He refued to admit to himself that he was nervous and worried about it - he wasn't. Of course he wasn't.

Awkwardly, breaking from her gaze and glancing to the side, he made a suggestion.

"..maybe I should try on something easier, first? Work my way up to it."

Build his confidence up; but of course, the little fae refused to admit that this was the reason. No, he just wanted to stop feeling so frustrated; it would be nice to actually suceed a bit.

He ignored that his lack of confidence in it was even in that reasoning.

"That's a good idea, Varian," Zaniel quickly interjected, giving the boy a winning smile. He tilted his head to one side. "Did you get any more, less serious injuries you can try to fix?"

Dessa resisted the urge to snort at her fellow tutor. It was quickly becoming painfully obvious that Zaniel was the-- what was that human word? Ah... cheerleader!-- for the boy while she had to provide actual logic. Varian was obviously not confident in his abilities. Perhaps a confidence-booster was necessary. She extended her hand toward Varian. "Make one of my fingers look different. Then change it back. Then you don't have to... damage yourself," she said wisely. Really, did she have to provide the beauty and the brains in this operation?

Less serious injuries? Varian had managed to fix those already, of course. But Dessa's suggestion had merit, he thought. But rather then just charging in and changing her finger, he instead took several long moments to simply study it.

He really didn't want to completely mess it up, when he changed it back.

Placing his hands over the chosen finger, he began to concentrate. The first time, the skin rippled and ran like water. When he pulled his hands away, it did exactly what his ear had done. On the second try, he hadn't quite achieved what he was aiming for...so, after fixing it (and he thought he fixed it adequately, but he wasn't entirely certain...) he attempted a third try.

This time, when the skin rippled and slid, he managed to make it look a bit more like what he had intended; he couldn't change bone structure, of course, but he was able to 'pile' enough skin there so that it looked as if that finger had much knobbier and larger bones then the rest.

Inspecting his work as he took his hands away, he decided that looked like what he had intended. Replacing his hands, he attempted to fix it.

It appeared he had fixed it correctly. Except that as he had slid it all into place, it seemed almost like a rain drop (Except for the color) of 'skin' had slid from her hand and onto the floor. So while her finger now looked normal, there was also a little piece of skin on the floor.

Ew.

While both tutors watched in silence, Zaniel had to make a small face when a bit of Dessa's skin ended up... dripping off. It was obvious the male fae was not willing to give up any of his precious parts for the sake of practice, but he seemed interested enough in the progress. "That was better, minus the small... mishap," he said, eyeing the piece of skin. He did hope that wasn't painful. Dessa was terrifying when in pain.

He need not have feared. Dessa took back her hand and flexed it, closely watching the re-fixed finger. It felt fine and looked fine to her. "Nicely done," she said, nodding at Varian. "This is an improvement." She pushed the mirror back toward him again. "Now, try your ear one more time. But don't try to fix it all. Just a small part of it."

Mishap.

What a disgusting mishap. Varian really hoped he didn't do that to himself - he wouldn't be able to look at his own skin without shuddering, if he dripped a bit of it off. Ugh.

Returning his attention to the mirror, Varian reached up his hands to try again. This time, he just focused on one small spot., as Dessa said. And it seemed to be working, as the skin slid into place...but paying close attention, he noticed that even then - while the marks on the skin were hidden, ridges where the wounds were, were still there.

After attempting to get rid of them - and failing - he removed his hands...and once more, the skin seemed to partially return. It looked a bit better - but the marks on the skin were still there.

Hmm...maybe the injury was still to fresh to remove? Not discounting his own insecurity about it, of course.

((>.> That way there's an excuse for right now asides from just his own confidence xDD))

Dessa nodded, the edges of her lips curving up into a frightening, albeit somewhat attractive, smile. "Progress. How do you feel about it, Varian?" she queried, leaning forward on the table and nearly causing Zaniel's eyes to bug out at the unexpected view her new position afforded. She ignored him, of course.

After managing to tear his eyes away from the visual playground, Zaniel grinned at Varian, nodding his dark head in approval. They were getting somewhere. Even if the ear wasn't returning to normal, Varian seemed to be getting a better grasp on his abilities. This was good.

Briefly, Varian wondered what it was that had made Zaniel make such an odd expression...it seemed out of character. Give Varian some hormones and he'd understand - but at the moment, that wasn't likely.

"It's something, at least."

His ear still wasn't fixed. He was grateful that at least a little progress had been made, but it still wasn't right. So he wasn't happy.

And he had the right to be grumpy, because it was his ear. And yes, he was being a brat again.

"Maybe try practicing more on yourself like you did to me. Small things, things you know you can fix. Use a mirror, if you must," Dessa was saying, not oblivious to the fact that Varian was unhappy. Unfortunately, it wasn't as though she could wave her hand and magically poof it back to normal. Besides, the ear being damaged would encourage him to practice and develop his gift more.

Zaniel was nodding at this, seemingly not willing to comment for the moment. Or maybe, he feared if he opened his mouth, something naughty and inappropriate would spill out instead of the encouragement he wanted to give. Better to keep his mouth shut, yes.

Nodding and reluctantly accepting this, Varian moved on.

"And, about my earlier query..."

Poisons. To be completely honest, anything with the same sort of result he'd also like to act about - but he wasn't sure how they would even react to poison, so he wouldn't ask some of his more creative ones, just yet.

"What do you know about them?"

Keep it neutral; he didn't know what way they would fall (although he really hoped they would fall behind him), so it was best to not let them realize his true intentions. Maybe?

He was a little uncertain in the whole sneaking thing. He preferred to just let everyone know what was what, and leave them to deal with it.

Zaniel perked up at this mention of Varian's earlier question. Ah, yes.... the interesting question. Now that his hormone-ridden brain had begun to get itself back in order, he felt his thoughts organizing again. Ah. Beautiful thoughts. "Poisons, yes. I know that some are more deadly than others and some are more easily traced. Some are harder to get into the system. I also know that most of our kind can smell poisons in food and drink if it's too strong. I don't even know how many will work on our kind, to be honest," the male fae admitted. Then again, who needed poisons with Death on the loose?

"If you are trying to kill your guardian, I would advise against it," Dessa said simply, narrowing her eyes to look at Varian, her hair wildly flowing and hissing. "Or are you trying to exact revenge for your mangled ear?"
PostPosted: Mon Apr 02, 2007 7:59 pm

"I wouldn't kill my guardian...I'd probably get stuck with someone horrible, if I did," And of course, Varian didn't have any emotional attachment to Aletea. Nope, none at all.

Yeah, denial was something this kid was very familiar with.

At the second suggestion though, a vaguely guilty look drifted across his face before his face shifted to a neutral mask "I'm not seeking to kill her, anyway. I just want the knowledge in case she ever tries something again."

Killing wasn't neccessary, at the moment. Maybe a potion that made her unable to leave the bathroom, or made her throw up a lot...now that he could see a current usage for.

But he'd have to remember that - the stronger ones wouldn't work. Hm..

The male fae had to recognize the wisdom in Varian's statement concerning his guardian, though Zaniel's face was kept in a carefully neutral expression. Killing someone wasn't something a child should be thinking about. Not in Zaniel's mind, anyway. He didn't have to be female or especially brilliant to catch the look on Varian's face, though. With a mild sigh, he reached out and patted Varian's hand. "Poisons aren't something to be taken lightly, though. They can be very permanent."

"Indeed," Dessa said quietly, her eyes never leaving Varian's face. "You could avoid her instead. If you two were known to be fighting and she turned up injured or dead, the blame would be laid at your feet."
PostPosted: Mon Apr 02, 2007 8:13 pm

"We're in the same class; it's a bit hard to avoid her."

Varian was feeling increasingly grumpy...his tutors weren't helping! Although Dessa did have a point about the blame thing. He'd just have to be more subtle about it. He just hoped they didn't ask what the class was - he enjoyed it, but he'd already figured out that most people found it very entertaining he did ballet.

His next words were sullen, even if they did have a ring of truth in them.

"I'm not looking to kill her...aren't there some poisons out there that'll just have entertaining side effects?"

Like...maybe turn her bright colors? That would be entertaining. Or if she got sick, well...how could they possibly blame an immune system problem on him?

He doubted they would tell him anything, of course.

Zaniel looked like he was tempted to ask, but one look from Dessa shut him up quickly. He smiled very slightly at Varian's question. Oh, what a devious child. If only his sneaky nature were more helpful to him, he might have been in better shape. "Poisons, no. Potions, maybe, but those are far beyond our expertise. The healers might know, but..." he trailed off.

"I doubt they'd let you get your hands on anything. Healers tend to be picky about their concoctions." Dessa's faint frown portrayed her feelings on the issue. Damn healers. They got on her nerves. "Your wits might serve you better than a sickening potion."
