Son of Axeman
That notion that one must intristically respect another person's beliefs because they believe them reminded me of a joke:

"I believe that the universe was created by two giant turtles who did battle with space-god"

"That view is ridiculous"

"It's my religion"

"And I respect it!"

Now, given the nature of the guild, this would be an off-colour thing to say, but it raises an interesting point. Do we have an obligation to tolerate nonsense, simply because it's religiously-worded nonsense? Not to say that any religious person deserves prosecution (surely not, we all have the right to believe in whatever it is that pleases us), but when we have a situation on our hands (and this is true), where there is a large group of people who want to infringe on our rights because it fits their religious worldview, do we have an obligation to give them enough power to be able to take those rights (many of which are constitutionally provided) away? Should personal belief in deity be allowed to affect public policy?

This is a topic in of itself. I suggest you create a new thread on it somewhere, Axeman!

of course, they teach that darwinism crap that says we all evolved from monkeys, so why not at least throw the idea out there that maybe, just maybe, our fore fathers are not monkeys and that they actually were humans that were created by a higher power.

Nisha, do your homework, please. The theory of evolution is far more complex than "We're monkeys, lol". It's intricate. There are mountains of real, tangeable evidence that we can all see and replicate. Hell, we've seen it happen.

I'm not asking for much, here. I've read the Bible through and through, but you've obviously never been properly introduced to the theory of evolution. Please, read the articles I linked to.

Regardless of your position on the issues, it's of utmost importance that you're knowledgeable in the subject that you're debating. So long you have that, it doesn't matter what conclusion you come to.

despite your beleifs i am well versed in it, and i realize its more than that but the things your links are explaining to me
is why(if we evolved from monkeys) are there still monkeys!?!?
and if we evolved from sapians how come our dna is more compatible to a chickens?

A full understanding of evolution isn't taught in K-12, at least not anywhere I'm aware save if you take an AP biology class. To really understand evolution, you need a more advanced, college-level course in it. That's part of why there are so many misconceptions about evolution: it isn't taught adequately K-12 and the only place you can really get taught it is as a biology major in college.

No modern evolutionist will say we evolved form monkeys because we didn't. We share a common ancestor with them somewhere down the line, but we did not evolve from them. We share the closest common ancestor with chimps, not monkeys:

And where did you hear our DNA is more 'compatible' with chickens? What did they mean by 'compatible'? For what sorts of research applications?

That's an awesome start! I think part of the reason evolution isn't taught well in K-12 is that you need a firm understanding of the basics of biology first to really get it and its hard to teach since oversimplifying the theory leads to a lot of the common misconceptions. You'll get a decent overview in AP Bio (hopefully) and its a foundation that can be built upon later. If you're really interested in the theory, Dawkin's stuff is great (if you can get past his excessive tangential ramblings).

i think thats part of what turns me off of it so much is the fact that half of it is people talking out of there but about like, nothing imperticular, its just all thrown in there

Don't look at me like that, you were all thinking it.

nisha, is all of this starting to make sense to you? If you really are as interested in biology as you claim to be, you'll soon see the full field of evidence supporting evolution. On a related note, the subject of teaching creationism in schools is equally pointless as the debate over which is the correct theory. For instance:

Alongside chemistry, an introductory course in alchemy will also be taught.
Alongside astronomy, astrology! Because the positions of stars are equally important to what makes them up and the matter that surrounds them!
Instead of the law of gravity being taught alone, we'll also include the theory of INTELLIGENT FALLING! Yes, that's right, ladies and gentlemen, we're giving the little guy a chance!

The Bible is already used in our schools. It has been used by several of my teachers for its literature, parables, & poetry. They told us what they were planning & asked the class if we were ok with it. It has been used somewhat in US/World history too, but mostly for English & Comm.

I do think that a class on origins & beliefs is highly needed. One that could teach students the basics of atleast the major religions, theories, world beliefs, & the local native beliefs. I've always believed that having that basic understanding of eachother could do alot of good. True you can learn about a religion most easily by going to a church, but what if there are no churches in your area, what if the religion isn't the type to tell anyone about itself, or what if the person in question is just to uncomfortable to stroll on in?
If most Americans had a basic understanding of Islam & the culture that surounds it, do you think we would be having so many problems in relations with the middle east?

Our country is a melting pot, filled with just about every belief & religion out there, so why isn't it required to learn about one another, When it could help relieve so many misconceptions & alienation.
