It seems to be a western thing, really, and something that's under a bit of contention. A lot of western lolitas really don't believe that there is a "lifestyle" that is requisite to lolita, but there are others who do believe it and treat anything outside of that ideal as being "wrong."
A lot of the reason it comes up so often is because of Princess Skye and her website [the Princess Portal; a collection of essays, articles and information about her lifestyle. She treats lolita as a sort of role-playing experience], since it's a resource a lot of beginner lolitas in the west find and immediately adhere to. It also tends to be an attitude that newcomers to the style adopt because they are unable or unwilling to buy or make lolita clothing just yet--it's a way of being a "lolita" without wearing the clothes [sounds silly, since it's a fashion, right?].
I think I understand, it's so hard to understand western lolita's.
I know 2-3 girls here in Japan that "act" lolita while wearing it, but they don't wear it often (Weekends only usualy) and there only 2-3 out of many i have meet going back and forth between my city and harajuku. It's just not a very common thing, but yes I'll admit its there. But yea, it's more of a roleplay thing, not an acctualy LIFESTYLE.
No one I know acts like that 24/7; and I think it would be rediculous too. Yea it's cute, but If you didn't act like that before you even heard of lolita, why try to force yourself to change? I'd be perfectly fine with it if it was someone who acted like it for many years, and then came across the lolita fashion, that would be way different.
If your not wearing the lolita style, I would just say your acting victorian, or old english; not lolita. Thats the way I see it anyway.
