Princess suppressed a wince, instead flicking her ears back. Faithless partners...if that wasn't at the top of her 'dislike' list, it was close. She'd seen more than one example of the devastation they could wreak. "What was...the main issue, if there was one? Breakings are uncommon, but when they happen there's usually a reason for it."

She had to pause, trying to come up with a good, short summary of the situation.

"Well," she started, her lion-like tail flipping from one side to the other, "To put things nicely... neither one of us were thinking straight when we jumped into the relationship. He was romantic, I was looking for someone to guide me, since I was new to these lands. Then the pregnancy happened... far too early for it to have been wanted or expected. I'm not saying it was a mistake, moreso a... surprise, of sorts. He, being the wanderer that he is, left for quite some time, and it was almost up to the day that I delivered that he reappeared. It... he's just too selfish. I'm too selfish... it just never really seemed to have worked out from the start."

She bit her bottom lip, wondering just exactly where she had messed up. Had the relationship been truly doomed from the very beginning?

"He left, just the other night, taking one of the baskets with him. He swore... he swore I'd never see the foal again."

She closed her eyes, trying her best to will herself not to cry. The thought of never seeing her own child again hurt her worse than anything else.. the breakup, the loneliness, everything. How could she go on living knowing that there was a foal out there, her foal, that could possibly need her?

"That's...I'm sorry for calling up such memories." Princess visibly flinched at the thought of a foal torn away from its mother, never to know her, of two more never to know their sire. Such was rare in these lands, but when it happened...the effects were forever felt. But usually...the stallion had more honor than this.

Seeing the young mother's emotion, Princess stuffed her pride where it rightly belonged at times like this and stepped forward, leaning her head over the other Soquili's shoulder in the best sort of hug she could manage. "It's alright. Whatever happens to the foal with him...it is not your fault. Worry about the ones with you, and hope you will see your other son or daughter again. After all..." She paused. "He won't be able to watch it all the time...especially when he or she is grown. There is hope."

The other mare's affection touched her, and Nos gave her a sad smile.

"Thank you," she said softly, shaking her head as she attempted to collect herself. "He isn't a horrible stallion... I do trust that the foal will be taken care of...I just... I feel worthless. Like it was all my fault in the whole situation."

Turning back, she glanced at the cave's entrance, thinking of her two precious little ones still sleeping away in their baskets. "I'm not sure if they're even going to learn they have another sibling... what good would it do?"

She glanced back towards the brown mare and gave a small sigh. "I do hope I'll get to meet them one day. But with this land being so large and far... they could be anywhere. I just don't know..."

Nostalgia shook her head. Where were her manners?

"I'm so sorry, Princess, I didn't mean to go off on a tangent like that... please, would you tell me of your little ones? And of your mate?"

"It isn't your fault, certainly not all your fault," Princess repeated firmly. "He might have believed things as much as you, but it's rarely the stallion who gets the idea 'we might be going too fast' and pulls away in the heat of passion. He's often quite content to enjoy that, and then break the news." The bay mare shook her head in disgust at those stallions who allowed their nether regions to rule them.

"My mate...a dark stallion, much like the basket with me. Bright blue eyes, but all else is as dark and shadowy as a timber wolf. A quiet sort, but dependable and loyal. Two other baskets...one takes after my coloring quite a bit, and the last takes after both of us in a way."

She smiled, admiring the basket. "If the foal looks anything like the basket it's in, they're going to be beautiful." She said politely, a fan of darker colors herself. "And let's hope that all of them are dependable and loyal like their father, and still be as sweet and as pretty as there mother."

She motioned her head back towards the cave. "Would you and the little one like to come in and out of the forest? It's not the most comfortable of places, but it makes somewhat of a good home and a nice place to chat in."

"Thank you." Princess inclined her head with just a hint of an authoritative air, one that was hard to drop due to long habit of keeping such a mantle on. But she had wanted this, wanted the responsibility her own dam had once carried, and still would not give it up. Perhaps her herd wasn't as large, but it was still hers...and Waya's.

She nudged the dark grey basket slightly past the entrance, ducking her head a little to enter even if it wasn't needed. "For most dangerous circumstances this is a good place...might not be if a pack or group of something waited outside for a neccessary exit, but that's one of the more unlikely possibilities."

"This cave seems to attract no signs of life, due to the lack of livelihood in this particular area of the forest," Nos explained, stating her reason for choosing this cave as hers and the foals' living quarters.

The alicorn followed her new friend into her home, and slowly made her way past Princess and towards her own baskets, pausing a moment to give them each an affectionate nuzzle. Although they may not know who she was by her appearance, she wanted to ensure that the foals would recognize her voice and movements, and always feel safe.

"So," she said, raising her head back up to face the darker colored mare, "What brings you into our lonely part of the forest?"

"As good a reason as any, I would imagine. Our herd lands were chosen partly because of the existence of such a cave, though as would be neccessary it's somewhat larger. There's also fresh water nearby, and it's near the edge of commonly traveled lands. In fact, we have to ford that same stream to get to most of Soquili lands." Princess smiled at the attention that the spectral alicorn gave to her own baskets. The mare seemed young, but one couldn't fault her diligence.

"What brings me here? Wandering a little further than usual in search of grazing, and exercise. Just because I have a basket at heel, doesn't mean I should let myself get too soft."

"It is a beautiful day for exercise," Nostalgia acknowledged, glancing towards the cave's exit to see the sunlight attempting to peak inside. "Perhaps when my little ones decide to come out and visit the outside world, we shall take strolls on beautiful afternoons like today."

Looking back towards her two offspring, she smiled as she watched one of the baskets stir, awakening the other one and causing a second stir. It only took minutes, however, for the stirring to cease itself, and the foals fell back asleep in their tiny homes. She wouldn't push them to come out too quickly, but she knew their long-awaited appearance would come soon.

"That it is, but one must learn to endure rain and snow as well, unless they are exceptionally clever at finding shelter." Princess glanced out at an area that seemed rather distant from human habitation. "Those...teepees...that the two-leggers build are all well and good, but some prefer not to depend on them." She tilted her head at Nostalgia, nostrils flaring slightly as she thought. "I hope your foals grow to be strong, but not arrogant in their strength. It is one of the best ways to be."
