i dont think the first 2 pics look alike....except for the hair blowing in the wind thing. As for the second 2 pics, they really DO look alike! somebodys done their research!

I don't really see the similarities between the first two. But I'm pretty sure the creators intened the last two to be similar. I forgot how awesome Michelangelo is though. Sweet.

But I do thin you may have an idea with the whole forshadowing thing. Koh did say he was pissed with Aang and his past life, maybe staeling katara's face would be good payback confused

Who's the woman in the very first picture? I don't recognize her.

And the second observance is a little uncanny.

The first one is one of the faces Koh stole.

Wow. Strange.

as many have said.. the first on't look all that much alike (katara and Kurku's wife/love) but the second...

it really does look like the statue (i am really blanking on the name.. even though i have seen it in real life....) my guess is that the animators used it both for a certain look, but also as a reference to both katara and aang. aang being a spiritual leader who would sacrifice himself for the sake of everyone else... and katara might be seen as a mother figure.. the one who will mourn him the most.. the one who was always most loyal....

I don't know why it took me so long to figure out what the statue was called.....

I think some might argue that face is Katara's mother, or something crazy like that, but it's impossible. Blue eyes run in the tribe.

As far as the statue... I dunno. I mean, I'm no Catholic, so I'm not familiar with the whole Mary thing, but the Wiki article does say this:

Quote:
The term "pieta" originated from a custom of the Roman Empire around the time of AD 64, referring to the act of prostrating oneself, and putting forth an "Emotion...of great love accompanied with revering fear....of the [Roman] Gods."

Weeeell, that could be applicable, depending on your view of things. True, Katara has great love for Aang, and vice versa, and Aang is something of a god, but the only thing that puts me off that is the fear part. Katara doesn't fear Aang. In The Desert, she was the only one who didn't run away. As far as reverence, she doesn't revere him... they're equals. Well, not power-wise, but in their relationship, they're equals.

I think they're both just coincidences.

And to add on to that, time-wise, it couldn't be Katara's mom. I'm pretty sure that's Koh who stole someone's face (can't remember who's) and that was during a previous Avatar's lifetime.

i'm pretty sure its the last water bender avatar's (i can't remember his name) wife... because in escape from the spirit world, aang says he thinks he say koh use the wifes face, and thats one of the only faces we see from koh...
