Tehya's guilty pleasure was interrupted by the arrival of Zoet and her father. Upon realizing that no, she was not hallucinating, and no, the mushroom she'd snuck truly WAS non-toxic (much to Haita's dismay) she shot to her feet, composing herself in what could be called... record time. "Yes, umm... Happy Birthday?" Tehya's voice was bewildered and thick with embarassment. "We made you a party hat, see?"
On cue, Haita scampered over to the log, and picked up the wreath. She held it out as Tehya babbled about.... something.
Ahh, the beauty of embarassment!

Eloran managed to recover from his astonishment at the odd behavior of the strange mare, just in time to graciously accept the ring of flowers from the small animal. Under the guise of growing accustomed to it, he composed himself and recentered his thoughts on what was at hand... a surprise birthday party?
"Zoet, was this your idea?" He beamed warmly at his gangly daughter and embraced her, using his chin to draw her close and nuzzle her tenderly. "Thank you, daughter. It's a lovely surprise." He took a nibble of a nearby tidbit, then finally turned his attention back to the clearly unsettled mare. "I am guessing you must be a friend of my daughter's, and that you have helped her prepare all this for me." He smiled with genuine, if mild, warmth. He wasn't entirely sure about her yet, as she had tended to come across as ditzy so far.
"I'm sure you already know, but my manners insist I introduce myself." He blew gently through his nostrils in greeting. "I am Eloran. I was of the village once-upon-a-time, but that was long ago. The forest is now my home, and you are most welcome in it." He bobbed his head graciously.
Zoet's sharp ears pricked up instantly. Her father never mentioned his life before she and he moved to the forest, which had been when she was so little she could barely remember it. He avoided discussing anything of that time, and she was startled to hear him mention it to a total stranger. Wisely she chose to keep her mouth shut and simply listen with the hope of hearing something more about her father's past.

When the stallion turned his attention away from her, she took the opportunity to compose herself, ignoring Haita's chittered giggles in her ear as the racoon fixed the party hat that was on her head, putting ruffled petals back in place and making it look less squashed. The father-daughter moment was adorable, and the brown mare hid a smile watching them. Ahh, family.
When the brown stallion turned his attention back to Tehya, she smiled, ducking her head back to him. "A pleasure to meet you Eloran. I am Tehya. I live with my two-legger and several companions near where the forest and the river meet. Thank you for your kind welcome." her speech was oddly formal. "Your daughter is lovely." she said, and gave Zoet a grin. "When she told me she was on a mission, I just had to join in!"

Eloran cast his beaming daughter an amused look. "Yes, when she's set her mind about something, she does tend to sweep others into it, whether they like it or not." He flicked an ear at his flowery crown, then snorted a soft laugh. Movement caught his eye, and he peered at the raccoon that had been scurrying about, making things presentable. "And who might this be?"
Zoet wasn't terribly disappointed that her father hadn't further discussed humans with her new friend. She had a very patient outlook about it, really. Besides, there was FUN to be had! She darted behind a bush and bounded back out with a reed in her teeth. It was hollow on both ends, but there was a clump of leaves growing at one end. With mischievious delight she closed her lips about the bare end and blew hard. The hollow sound might not have been very interesting if it hadn't been for the leaves at the end flapping wildly, making almost a raspberry sound.
She giggled delightedly and promptly dropped the reed as she grinned, for we all know you can't blow through something AND smile at the same time!

"Oh no, it really was no trouble at all. Zoet is very charming, and fun to be around. And this would be Haita." Tehya said, grinning at the creature who so closely matched her own coloring. She was relaxing, really, but then when the filly came running back and gave that first blast of the raspberry-reed... she could have sworn she leapt so high in startlement that she saw the clouds beneath her feet.

Eloran blinked at the sudden blast of noise his daughter emitted, then turned in concern to the new mare. She had about come out of her skin! The father cast his offspring a stern look, then moved closer to Tehya. "I do apologize. As you get to know her, you learn just how many unexpected surprises Zoey has hidden, waiting for the oddest moments to leap out and catch you unawares."
The father turned his full attention to the now embarassed half-grown filly. "You will now apologize to Miss Tehya, Zoet, for frightening her so." His tone was firm and brooked no arguments.
Zoet truly was sorry for her actions. She thought Tehya was a lovely friend, and now she had gone and scared her. She dropped her head and shuffled her hooves. "I'm sorry, Miss Tehya," she said clearly, not mumbling or muffling her words. (She knew that would earn her a painful n** from her father.) "I didn't mean to scare you." She raised contrite eyes to meet the older mare's.

The rest of their little party proceeded smoothly. Eloran found the company charming, and though he felt a twinge deep in his chest how his daughter took so to this adult mare, he also treasured the time as precious. Any time that Zoet spent happily was worth any price paid. And the price this time was to spend a pleasant evening with a new and friendly face. It seemed a perfectly suitable way to mark his age. It would be a birthday he would remember always.
