Damu knew he'd give his life to protect his twin, and he was absolutely sure that'd he'd never let anyone hurt her. Whether this protectiveness carried into the category of even letting anyone close enough to her to potentially hurt her could only be decided by the future. His dark eyes glanced to his mirror image, and a smile smile flickered over his muzzle. He sidestepped a bit, nudging his shoulder against her.
"Of course you'd come with me. Do you ever think I'd let you out of my sight?" he chuckled. "I don't know where I'd go though...I don't even know what lies beyond the forests." He shivered as he mentioned them. The poor thing still believed the dark, deep forests to be just as haunted as all the adults said.
As Haba left his side to move forward, Damu perked up. Where exactly were they going, anyway? Raising his head to a more alert level, he loped after his sister, curiosity peaked.

She smiled widely, her teeth glimmering in the sunshine. Another purr rumbled from her throat and she nipped playfully at his ears. "I'm glad." She replied. "And I'll return the favour, okay? We'll watch out for one another forever and ever!"
"Maybe we should ask mum or dad? They've probably seen a lot of the world. That way they can tell us all about it and we can go visit the places. Having a set destination is more appealing than just mindlessly wandering, don't you think?" She shook her head and huffed slightly. "Though for now I'm happy to stay here. I mean...we have everything we want to here. Except...lots of friends maybe." She did like being alone. She liked to flounce around in her pretty fur, showing off in front of others, but everyone here seemed content in staying in their own little family groups.
Then finally she ran down to the river bank and began to search through the reeds. She and Pomoka had hidden the present safely from sight, where it wouldn't get dirty. They had found it when they had been watching fish swiming in the river and Hababuu had risked her beautiful pelt to go into the shallows and retrieve it.
"Over here Damu! Close your eyes and no peeking!"

Damu shrugged his shoulders at the mention of mum, nipping in return at Haba's side. "We'd be better off asking father. It's not like mum is ever around anyway..." His brow lowered, a mildly irritated expression on his face. Ever since their mother's absence, Damu had had a growing resentment for her. He still loved and adored his mother, obviously, but he didn't like the worn look that Uumi wore most of the time now.
As for friends...Damu was content with none. He preferred either being alone, or with Haba. Being around large crowds made his skin crawl, which gave birth to an enormously nervous feeling. There were obviously many young lions in the Kusini lands their age...But Haba was right. No one seemed to venture outside of their small family groups.
Damu was lost in his thought when his twin bounded away from him. Noticing her absence (he didn't even have to see or hear anything - he just knew when Haba wasn't around), his head perked up. He followed her down to the river bank, grinning faintly at her excitement. "Fine," he grumbled, faking annoyance as he closed his eyes tight. Stepping very carefully and slowly, he eased towards her voice. He peeked open a single eye, testing her.

"Hey, I said no peeking!" She swiped gently at his face with a paw before retrieving the gift. Then holding it carefully between her mouth she laid the present at his paws and smiled. It really was a beautiful present and it sure did suit such a beautiful person as her twin.
"Okay open your eyes!" She announced, bouncing a little on her paws as she felt the excitement of such a small, but special occasion.
And when Damu opened his eyes he would see a small seashell. It was flat, round and ridged and in thesunshine it glittered green and white.
"What do you think?" She asked, hopefully.

Damu chuckled, nipping at her swiping paw. It was really an amazingly drastic change, his personality around his twin compared to...well...everyone else. Settling his rump on the ground, he swished his tail back and forth, holding his mocha eyes tight like a proper boy.
Yet as soon as Haba gave the signal, his eyes snapped open. He was excited about any gift he received - especially from his other half. Looking down to his paws, Damu's eyes widened. It was...strange. It was...absolutely beautiful! Jumping to his paws, a grin wide on his muzzle, he bounded over and nudged his head underneath his sisters, purring loudly. "It's wonderful, Haba! Thank you!" He gave a quick, rough lick to the side of her cheek.
Scurrying back over to his present, he flattened his belly to the ground, the tiny object between his large paws. He was amazed by it, and as he shifted it slightly with his paws, he was almost entranced by the shifting colors. "I've never seen one of these before. What's it called?"

She tingled all over when she saw his reaction and let out a small 'squee' sound. Oh this made her very, very happy! She purred and nuzzled him back, ears flattening as she rubbed her head against his side.
"I'm glad you like it Damu." She replied, eyes gleaming. Then at his question she tried to think back to what the strange stone was. She settled beside him and curled her tail around his as if to keep him from getting away.
"A shell, it's called a shell." She replied finally. "One of the frogs told me!" She giggled, resting her head on his shoulder. Suddenly she wished they could remain kids forever, which was strange as she always dreamed of being grown up.

Damu grinned at her, curling his own tail around hers in return. His eyes fell down to the delicate object between his paws. He was afraid to touch it. It looked so...lightweight and frail. It might shatter if he took it between his overly large paws, and he could never live with that.
"Shell," he repeated slowly. He turned his head, nestling against her. An identical thought flashed through his own head. He didn't want to grow up. He wanted to stay like this forever, with no responsibility, no worries. The future before him nagged at him, bothered him like an approaching storm cloud. Something didn't sit well with Damu about his future. He didn't want it to come.
Pushing that aside, he rose to his paws. Turning to Haba, he said, "Help me find something to put it on!" Swishing his tail back and forth, he beamed at his twin. He wanted to carry the shell around with him everywhere...He just didn't know how to go about doing that.

The little female stretched her body out under the sun and shook her head, getting to her paws. The beautiful colour of her fur shone with brilliance under the touch of the sun. "Okay!" She exclaimed cheerfully. Her maroon-rimmed eyes watched her brother with the deepest affection.
It was somewhat lovely to see a pair of siblings getting on so well instead of fighting and bickering all the time. Yet it was this relationship that Habu most relied on. If she didn't have Damu then she had nothing and that was somethign she could not live with. When he was happy so was she, if he was sad then she felt sad too. They were definately connected somehow, heart and soul.
She turned her head to glance around. "What do you think we can use?" She asked, moving back to the side of the stream. Her eyes caught sight of the thin wisps of reed that grew up from the base of the stream. Perhaps that might be of some use?

Damu shook his tuft of mane out of his eyes, glancing down at Haba. He grinned fondly at her. What would he do without her, the mirror of his heart and soul? If he didn't have her, Damu felt that half of him just...wouldn't exist.
Peering around the riverbank, he spotted the reeds Haba had pointed out. Tilting his head to the side a moment, he studied them. Would they work? Trotting forward, he grasped some between his pearly teeth and tugged hard. They snapped off easily around their bases, and the young male dragged the long, grassy strands back to where his twin was standing. Placing them at her paws, he continued to look at them. "Maybe it we tie them together really tight? We can make it even sturdier if we weave them together, too."
Settling his belly on the ground, Damu took two of the strands. Placing one end underneath his paw, he took the other and began twisting them together tightly. After he finished those two, he took another and twisted it into it as well. "If you make a strand like this, Haba, we can tie them together and it'll be extra strong," he said, tongue poking out of the side of his mouth. The poor dear was really concentrating awfully hard on the task.

She watched her brother intently as he weaved the reeds. It was a difficult task with paws but she knew it wasn't impossible. She nodded as he asked her to help and snatched up two in her jaws. Then placing them on the ground she began to wind them too. She found it difficult at first, her paws struggling to get them to work together. Then finally she started getting somewhere and soon she had her own weaved reed to add to her brother's.
She glanced up at him, smiling at how focused he seemed and feeling a great happiness in her heart. She was so glad that he had liked her present, so, so glad. She'd have to tell Pomoka about it next time she saw the little juvenile.
Her tail batted at the ground and as she nudged the weaved reed away with her paws she couldn't help but wonder. "Damu...where do you think mother is at?" She asked. "Do you think she loves daddy when she's always out and about, never at home?" Perhaps this is how the death of her grandmother had affected poor Sy. Hababuu didn't know.

Damu took Haba's end of the reed chain and drug it over to his own. Pulling the tiny shell towards him, he inspected it carefully. There! The smallest of holes near the end of it. Keeping his eyes intently on it, he took the tiniest bit of reed and pushed it through (though it took him quite a few tries). Looping it over, he somehow managed to make a circle, and through this loop he tied the two reed strands. Laying his new necklace on the ground, he shoved his nose under the edge, and somehow managed to shake it down his neck. The glimmering shell fell softly against his chest.
He was so intent on his new finery that he barely heard Haba's question. "Hmm? Oh...her," he said sullenly, batting at a small stone with his paw. Over the many days and weeks their mother had been missing, Damu's resentment had slowly grown in his belly. Besides Haba, Uumi and Sy were more important to him than anything. He shrugged. "I dunno where she is. But I think dad still loves her...or he wouldn't look so miserable without her." Mocha eyes brimming with hurt, he looked to his twin. "What if she's forgotten about us?"
That was the only thing Damu could think of. The alternatives as to why they hadn't seen their mother in forever were just...too unbearable to think of.
Shaking his head, he pushed himself to his paws. A brief glimmer of his reflection, seashell bouncing against his chest, brought the faint curve of a smile to his muzzle. Turning to Haba, eyes aglow, he nuzzled her affectionately. "This means I need to find you a special gift, too!" His tail wiggled like an overzealous canine. "Stay here, and no following. It'll have to be a surprise." Grinning, his rough tongue slid over his twins cheek before he turned and bounded away into the tall grasses, mind intent on finding his sister the most perfect gift ever.
