Beloved Lunatic

She whiped a fallen tear from her face, smearing a bit of blood as she did. She came to her own feet. She shook her head, realized he couldn't see it and spoke, keeping her voice nuetral even if it was a fight.

"It's not about him..." It was a small piece of what was going on with her...but it wasn't even the majority.

She dropped the cloth into the sink and turned to walk towards him, wrapping her arms around him and resting her forehead against his back. She held him close, half smelling the scent of blood as it called to something deep inside her. Walls of brick were being broken...and she felt powerless to stop them.

"Yes it is"

He pointed out coldly. HE could give Raven what she needed, could say the words she needed to hear. Joe couldn't, never could and never would. Apart from not being sure of what 'love' really was, he also knew he could not tell anyone that he did such a thing to them.

He had compensated for it, had learned to use words that left little doubt in the minds of those who needed to hear he loved that he did without saying such, but the curse on Raven that stopped her past from being remembered could not be lifted with such.

Joe didn't stop her hugging him, though made sure he didn't reach out for her, he didn't need this s**t. Didn't need to have her hate him later because he took advantage of her confusion and fed on her in a moment of weakness.

"You need to see him. Now."

He warned, his voice already giving away that the caffein was fleeing his system.

She didn't move. She didn't tighten nor did she loosen.

"He's only the tip of the iceberg..." She whispered.

Her eyes closed but she read his aura well enough to release him and move away. She slipped to leave for the door. She wanted to run, she wanted to scream or just fight something.

At the door she stopped. Why did she want to cry? He confused her...the foggy feeling confused her.

"He loves you"

He retaliated as he stood there, waiting for her to make the next move, staring into the space between his head and the cupboard.

She deserved respect and someone who didn't sleep around. Once upon a time, she may have been his mate and understood him, but now... now.. she had someone who cared and who wouldn't. It was more than unfair of him to interfeer in that.

He half nodded as she let go of him, glad she had taken his advice, especially given that she tended to not take his advice.

He swore as he remembered the events that had lead up to their breakup, forgetting about the condition of his body for the moment. Not for the first time he wondered what would have happened if he han't screwed up, if he wasn't Incubus or at least, if he was able to speak the magic words that would have ensured she'd stay.

Half way through the thoughts chasing through his mind, he became aware that the world kept going dark on him and by the time Raven had reached the door, there was a crash in the kitchen as he passed out, having once again mis-judged his body's strength.

Raven whirled around and practically ran back to him, tears of frustration quite evident.

"Joe you b*****d," she murmured quietly, more to herself rather then to him.

She needed a balance in her life and the scales were tipped... She couldn't understand what was going on.

Since she couldn't really get him to the couch let alone his own room, she kept him there, ignoring everything else.

Sometimes she wondered what it would be like, if she could fight half his battles and not worry about her own.

She whiped at tears again.

His mind having lost the battle between it and his body, he stayed unconscious for a while, bordering on scary for Raven if it hadn't been for her knowing what he was like, the fall itself adding no more than another few bruises to his body.

At the point where it would have been unatural for him to stay unconscious any longer, he opened his eyes, groaned and closed them again. The light hurt. Thus, lying wherever 'here' was and pretending to be dead seemed like a better option.

Raven had curled up close without touching him, her gaze staring into something unseen by anyone else... just her. She'd pulled her knees up and was hugging them to her chest...

Some time later, he attempted opening his eyes again, only to find himself looking at Raven. A puzzled expression showed on his face as his mind caught up, still coming up empty as to why she was here.

It had, however, caught up with the state of his body, something reinforced when he moved his arm to reach out to where Raven was, dropping it halfway there. He wasn't in the mood to cause himself additional pain.

Half a smile formed as he spoke, hopefully interupting her staring contest with the air.

"Hey.... Do you know where I put the painkillers?"

Raven rolled the bottle to him with her foot. She had found them while he was past out. She made no other effort to move, her expression ceasing to change. She felt numb inside...

The half smile stayed as he opened the bottle and took 2 of the tablets. They'd kick in in a few minutes, until they did, he was happy to stay where he was, though looked over at Raven questioningly. He had the distinct feeling she wasn't here to have fun with him, nor to look after him.

"So.. why are you here?"

He asked after a moment, not having come up with an answer.

She turned nearly souless eyes to him. It was either souless or tears...She was pretty sure he wouldn't handle her tears right now so souless it was.

"You pass out in a kitchen, hurting yourself further and you ask why I'm still here?"

She was a wolf. The wolf in her saw Joe as part of her pack and she needed to be sure he was alright...even if the past spoke how he would be alright.

The look in her eyes made another hundred questions pop into his mind. He hadn't seen her look this.. empty.. before.

He considered the answer she gave for a moment, then smirked.

"Yup"

Given that her entire being said she hadn't stayed so he could feed, he did wonder why she was here. The thought that she would have been at his side if she had her memories came and was pushed aside. If that was the case, she'd have stayed for feeding purposes too.

An empty grin came to her lips as she closed her eyes and chuckled. Same old Joe, she thought.

When her eyes opened again she stared over at the fridge rather then him. He was the one who had told her to go back...

"I'm not sure why I'm still here..."

She wasn't going to say it was because she cared about him, after all the crap they had been through in the past.

That puzzled him, and it showed. Why would she be here if she didn't know why she was here? He was certain he hadn't ask her to stay. If he had, she would have told him so. And he was sure it wasn't because of any feelings she might have had towards him. Those feelings had been erased when Alexis had been erased from her memory after all.

"Thanks for staying"

He didn't know why she did, but he appreciated the gesture. Waking up alone was never as nice as waking up with someone else in the room, even if that person wasn't sure why they were there.

"No problem..."

Her hand bled but it couldn't be seen in her lap. She'd accidently cut herself while fishing around for the painkillers. The pain was a nice welcome, she had thought. It wasn't emotional and it was bearable.
