Chana laughed outright at that. "Opinion column? Not for me thanks. It's my goal to not be opinionated...just to be there for people who need it," she told the other woman. "I'm happy to offer ideas and advice...it's something I've always done," she explained. And she had always done it. For her circle of friends, for the kids she'd babysat...right up through the youth group she'd lead.

"I'm always happy to help out where I can," the beaver commented again, before returning some of her attention back to her food.

"Well if you've got any good gossip, let me know. Thing have been pretty quiet since Jamal drove a jeep into Ambrose's duplex a month ago." She spoke as if it was a normal event, like the changing of the weather. "Well Newt's latest condition is new I suppose. But I'm not sure if I should write about that." She started on a second steak.

The beaver started to ask who Newt was, then silenced herself. Chances were, she either would know when the newsletter came out, or she didn't need to know. There was also the possibility that she'd find out for herself, but Chana had her own doubts there.

"The only person I've met lately was Jordan," she offered. "And Zach before him. I'm sorely out of touch."

"If that's the only company you keep you definitely need to get out more." She accented her disapproval with a soft growl. She hadn't even expressed surprise at the Jamal incident, had she known already? Or she really didn't care? She sniffed suspiciously, at this point she really didn't care what Chana's loyalties were but she has getting added to the do not trust list for now.

"Well...I mean, there's Stewart, of course," Chana fumbled, blushing furiously under her fur. "But it's been a month or two since I saw anyone else besides those two...I know I met Marshall and Cody and Brian..."

Wow. She really did need to talk to more people. Either that, or just build a dam, become a hermit, and be done with it.

"I guess I should get out more," she realized with a sigh.

Well it appeared to be more a case of social isolation than an allegiance, thats good. Richard relaxed a little. "I know the feeling. I probably would had hid in my duplex for another week or two if it wasn't for certain people." She looked down at her chest. "I usually wait till night fall to eat. Been spending most of my time in the jungle."

Chana nodded. "I remember doing that, especially back when I'd only been through one or two changes. But by the third, I figured I might as well live my life as best I could." She shrugged. "It's worked for me."

It really hadn't been so easy to come to that conclusion, but it was the realization that only the guards and other lab employees (who stayed on Moreau's good side, let's not forget Lily here) were the only ones who didn't change. Everyone else did sooner or later, and how could she be so embarrassed when she was surrounded by people in the exact same position?

"I... I endure but I'll never accept this." A flicker of the old Richard flared behind the inhuman eyes, prideful and defiant. "Some day I'll get at least part of my condition fixed." Richard still did not believe the island would last forever, maybe five years if that. Some way it would come crashing down and she would bare witness to the fall.

She finished her last steak.

Chana shrugged. She understood that she could only go on with life if she didn't think about the future or the past too much. She also realized that most of the people around her couldn't come to that acceptance and make their peace.

The beaver turned her attention to finishing her fish and making short work of the last of her twig salad. The silence in the cafeteria was rather uncomfortable, but she couldn't think of a thing to say. In this, Richard, it seemed, hadn't changed a bit.

Richard finished cleaning/grooming her hands and then looked up at Chana. "Well nice speaking to you. It was a pleasent meal." She stood and picked up her tray with her lower hands, waving goodbye with a handpaw. "Let me know if you come up with something for the news letter." She started to walk away, hips and tail swinging in tandem.

"Uh, sure," the beaver replied as she followed suit and returned her own tray and utensils. This had to be one of the most unusual afternoons she'd had in quite a while.

But even as she thought that, Chana's mind was churning, trying to think of good articles she could write for the newsletter. Like it or not, the wheels had started turning once again.
