Something that I find interesting, but is not really embraced in many churches are spiritual gifts. The church I go to encourages people to really seek the Holy Spirit which resulted in the fact that many people in my church have the gift of tongues. In the bible, when it mentions the gift of tongues, it also mentions that in a church there should be an interpretor so that the church may be blessed and encouraged by what is said so just a few months back, a woman discovered she had the gift of interpreting. ^-^ A gift that really stands out to me is a gift that a man in my church has where he can physically see angels and demons which is truly amazing.

So. I'm wondering, does anyone else have a spiritual gift? Does your church encourage this? What are you views on spiritual gifts? Do you know anyone or kind of vaguely know anyone who has a gift/gifts?

I am not to sure if I have a spiritual gift. How can you find out?

There are tests you can take that will tell you your spiritual gifts. I've never taken one, so I'm not totally sure about my Gift of Praise, but I'm pretty sure I have the Gift of Prophecy. see if you can track a test down.

I don't believe that we still have spiritual gifts today. I think the only ones who could pass on the gifts were God to the apostles and then the apostles to the early church. Once all of those people died (minus God, duh), there were no more gifts. But really, there was no need for them by then. The gifts were used to teach the people when they didn't have a complete Bible. Now that the Bible has been completed, we have all we need to learn about and praise God.

Quote:
I Cor. 13:8-11

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Before the Bible was completed, they had it in bits and pieces. Now, we have the whole and perfect word of God. Spiritual gifts were used to fill in the gaps while God's word was still being written. Now, we have no use for them.

I'm not really understanding the reason for the quote. 1 Corinthians 13 is the chapter on love (as we all know) and really has nothing to do with the spiritual gifts, except that if we don't use them with love they are useless. He is not saying that prophecy stopped in his time, but that someone can spew all the prophecies they want, be they true or false, but they will mean nothing if done without love. And they will not stand up to a person who works in love. So basically, the person who loves will 'win' more than the prophet who prophecies for the heck of it.

Paul even tells us to 'Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts' 1 Corinthians 14:1. He also says that we are not to be 'ignorant' about the spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12:1). No where in the Bible does it say that the gifts were only for that day. I think it would be a sad thing if that were true. I mean, the gifts are so awesome...it just blows my mind everytime I see one in action.

And having someone you've never met, and will never see again, come up to you and tell you things about yourself that you've never, ever told a single person, you tend to start believing in the gift of prophecy. And when you watch people in wheelchairs get up...well, let's just say that the gift of healing becomes a little more real.

So I googled up spiritual gift tests , and I took like three of them, but I have the following:

Faith
Leadership
Wisdom
Evangalism
Prophecy
and Sheperding/Guiding

and Knowledge, even though it's not nearly my strongest.

Having never seen anyone with a spiritual gift...it makes it kind of hard to believe that things weren't set up or that people are just good guessers or that they aren't just spewing out gibberish. And yes. I grew up in the church. We get along just fine without any "gifts".

I know that churches and Christians thrive and get along great without any spiritual gifts. It's not required for salvation.

However, I think it would be a sad thing to be without. They empower us to do God's will more effectively. And saying that they aren't around today based on the argument that the disciples didn't have the full gospel could be like saying professing Jesus as Lord and Saviour was only for that day too. Since we have the full Word of God, all we have to do is read it and we're good to go. And the commandments and everything...basically it would discredit all that the Bible has to say.

But when someone who doesn't know a thing about you starts telling you specifics about your life (where and when you did a certain thing...dates, times, everything) and when they tell you the dreams of your heart that you have never breathed a word of to a single person (and you can't just guess this one) and when they tell you something that is seemingly irrelevant but all of a sudden it happens at a later date....well...it gets a little more believable.

Everyone has spiritual gifts; since they are a spirit. The gift that probably comes most naturally; though, is astral projection. Astral projection happens when we are sleeping or dreaming, I presume because it's in this unconscious state that our own spirit is able to travel. Not too many people are aware of it; though, and many people experience spiritual activity everyday without even knowing it.

Some people have been given the gift of tongues; or they are some kind of psychic; or they see auras; or they see angels. You can add that God gives each person a special gift that they can do to serve Him, not a way to look special to others. In the same way, our gifts do not exist for us to be boastful or conceited about them, or to make us feel proud - they are there to serve others, and help them see God's presence in our lives and be drawn to Him.

Spiritual gifts are an area that must be dealt with cautiously. Some people erroneously teach that a person may receive any gift for the asking - this is not true. Some teach that the gift of tongues is available for the asking; not true. Most all what is witnessed today as a spiritual gift; is talked against in the Bible. Be careful with this subject.

i have the gift of speaking in tounges, what i believe though is everyone has all the gifts of the spirit, you just might not release them all. My church encourages the gifts of the spirit, also has Holy Spirit baptism to recieve the gift of tounges.

Speaking in toungues does exist, though I've never witnessed it, let alone done it myself. Put I've also never seen a person possessed by demons, and I know that exists, too.

I wouldn't reccomend using one of those tests to figure out your spiritual gifts. They aren't reliable; the only one who can tell you what your spiritual gifts are is the Holy Spirit.

Also, spiritual gifts aren't something you're really born with. They're something you develop as you get closer to Christ. So people who aren't Christian don't really have spiritual gifts. I mean, they aren't filled with the Spirit, right? That doesn't mean they can't be nice people or good at cheering people up or anything, but it does mean that being able to cheer up others isn't exactly a spiritual gift. Spiritual gifts are qualities that you wouldn't have developed otherwise.

As for me, I have a gift for empathy and giving. Some people say I have a gift for prophesy, so I might have that, too.
