...Well what was the worst they could do to him for being a bit late? If his fears were grounded and a mate had been chosen for him over the winter then these might be his last few weeks to do as he liked before being tied to a mare he'd never met and didn't care a toss for.
"I'd love to Iona," the Jala said with a smile and a bob of his head. "Where are you headed? I'll need to go north back to my father's herd eventually but... well, I'm in no great hurry to return."
If it weren’t for said sire and for his brother he probably wouldn't bother to go back at all. Certainly life was very easy there but life was easy in D'ob too and in D'ob, away from the herd he had grown up with, it was likely that he wouldn't have to sink back into the web of pretences.
Maybe he'd even find himself someone who was to him what this Libra was to Iona. Perhaps he'd be lucky and he'd come to love the mate that was chosen for him, whenever that ended up being, but the gold male found himself doubting it. His father would want a female of influence for his younger son and females of influence were seldom likable. A lot like him really, Diego considered, the feeling of discomfort flaring up again.

Diego's discomfort completely passed her by - she was too happy that he was coming along to notice much else. "First, I'm findin' a river and jumpin' in it," she laughed. "Get all th'mud off. An' get some food in me. An' once I done that, I s'pose I'll go t'ward the fire mountain. Thass where she always used t'live. Maybe I'll find 'er there."
Looking down into the valley - the dark valley, now that the sun had set - she thought back over the past few days. The river had been...that way. "It's this way," she said firmly, picking up her wings and tucking them more neatly against her sides. "Yona remember it now. 'An'sum gonna like this river - you stan' an' listen, an' it laughs. Never at ya. Always wiv ya. Thass why it's called "wiv-vah", in't it? C'mon."
If there was one thing Iona was good at, it was running. Running far, running fast, and running from a standing start. So that was exactly what she did. She took off down the bank with new-found energy, laughing as the wind rushed past her, knowing that Handsome would not be far behind.
And for the first time in a long, long time, she was not running away.

Diego grinned and took off after the purple mare like a golden arrow loosed from a bow. Whatever awaited him at home wasn't happening to him right now; there was no sense spoiling a good time by worrying about it.
Perhaps he would go with Iona a little of the way; it wasn't quite spring yet and he'd just come from the fire mountains in any case so he knew the way. The other Jala's thoughts one the river were as strange and endearing as the rest of her, made him want to remain in her company for a time at least. Even her dusty hide, a thing he would normally look down upon, made her special. Vulnerable. Precious.
Diego tossed his head and kicked up his back legs in exuberance as he raced to catch the fleet mare. She was faster than him. She was actually faster than him and that was exhilarating. He was managing to maintain the current gap between them but he couldn't catch her.
The Jala's grin widened; he was very glad that he'd chosen to swoop down over this one. Very glad indeed.
