RP: Doubt

~

It was just a piece of paper...

Green studied the piece of paper in her hands, holding it in such a way that it would be impossible for her to crumple or tear it. The young woman had developed an unconscious habit of always handling things gently and watching her feet when she walked. She was, as her mother had reminded her everyday of her childhood, too clumsy for her own damn good.

Was she expected to believe that this piece of paper would someday be a little girl; a living, breathing child?

"Why not?" she spoke out loud. After all, she had witnessed stranger things. Nyx, her oldest daughter, had been born from a block of wood and Nika, her son, had emerged from a mask. Why couldn't this piece of paper become a little girl? Why couldn't she believe?

"Its so fragile..." she murmered and slowly placed the piece of papper on the kitchen table. Green took a seat and bent over the piece of paper, squinting at it as to read what was written.

"Once upon a time," she recited, "lady, quiet and shy...hidden away beneath...alone."

"You're going to need glasses if you keep reading like that."

Green jumped up, turned to stare at the body belonging to the voice that had spoke and the chair she'd been sitting on clattered to the hard-wood floor.

Nyx, who was far more graceful than Green, moved to pick up the chair.

"Sorry," she laughed, "I didn't mean to scare you or anything."

Green could feel the blood rising to her cheeks. The small woman shook her head, embarrassed, and ran a hand through her blonde locks, "That's alright," she tugged at a tangle of hair she'd discovered, "I suppose that I was concentrating too intensely."

"I'm sure you're not the only one to get lost in your own head," Nyx shrugged and Green saw curioisty flash through her daughter's eyes when she glanced at the piece of paper on the table, "What's that?"

"A piece of paper."

"Duh," Nyx rolled her eyes and moved to get a better look at the piece of paper, "What does it say?"

The child reached a hand out towards it, and Green immediately noticed the orange fingertips.

"Wait," the young woman moved quickly. She pushed past Nyx and hastily (but carefully) picked up the piece of paper.

"What's all over your hands?" she stared down at her daughter accusingly and held the piece of paper out of Nyx's reach.

"Oh," Nyx smiled, "I just had some cheesies... Actually, that's why I came down here in the first place; to wash my hands."

"Well?" Green sighed, "What're you waiting for? Go wash your hands and then you can look at the piece of paper, as long as you promise to be extremely careful."

"I promise," Nyx rolled her eyes and washed her hands at the sink, "Honestly. It's only a piece of paper."

"Its not just a piece of paper," Green explained, "Its a child... I think."

"You think?" Nyx raised an eyebrow and stuck out her hand expectantly. Green was hesitant, and she took a moment to examine Nyx's fingers before she finally placed the piece of paper on the little girl's open palm.

Nyx glanced at Green, rolled her eyes and carefully moved the piece of paper closer to her face, making it easier to read.

"There isn't much on here, is there?" she wrinkled her nose with the effort of reading the words. Green smiled. Even though Nyx was a litte girl that knew and understood so many words, she loathed to read or write and so, the child often experience problems while she was trying to read.

Finally, after a few moments of careful pronunciatin, Nyx handed the piece of paper back to her mother.

"So am I going to have a new brother or sister?"

"Sister."

"Good," Nyx yawned, "It'll be fun to have another girl around the house."

"It will." Green nodded in agreement and turned towards the stairs, "Its late, though, and we can talk some more about this tomorrow. We should be in bed."

Diary Entry

~

July 14th 2005

Dear Diary,

Marie.

That is what I've decided to call her; the little girl I am to care for. I love her so much already and she is merely a piece of paper; a small, tattered thing with only a few legible words. It amazes me; the invisible presence that surrounds Marie, I mean. Perhaps my imagination is simply running wild and the strange feeling I always experience around Marie is nothing more than excitement. I can hardly wait for the little girl to finally emerge.

What will she be like? Will she like me? How will she get along with Nyx and Nika? What will she look like?

I believe I'm driving Nyx mad with my excitement. Ever since she helped decide on Marie's name I think she's been avoiding me. I don't believe she's worried about how the newest addition to the family will affect her lifestyle. Nyx just isn't a very socail child... I bet she's hoping Marie won't be loud and talkative.

I know that Nika isn't worried about the impact Marie will have on his life. He'll welcome Maire with open and loving arms, I'm sure. His mind is older than my own, and he was once a father. He should understand this amazing, exciting feeling...

I wanted to start decorating Marie's room... but I've decided that when she's a child, the two of us will start that project together. That way she'll get to choose the paint color and the furniture... and I won't have to worry about having a child upset with the way her room looks. She'll have to share a room with Nyx until we're finished but I think it'll be more fun this way.

I must go; dinner is burning. What a nasty smell.

Diary Entry

~

July 18th 2005

Dear Diary,

I suppose I might be paranoid.

I'm not paranoid. I just know that I'm not. I'm protective; that's all it is. Besides, I have every right to be paranoid when a strong wind could blow through my home at any moment and take Marie with it... Which happened. Imagine my horror when I turned my back for only a moment, a wind blew through the open window and I turned around to find Marie missing.

I'm still surprised she didn't float out the window, actually. She was snagged on a nail and I found her moments later. Thankfully, there isn't the slightest trace of a tear. I wonder, if there had been a rip, what might have happened to Marie? Would she still grow into a child or would she remain a page for the rest of her life?

I've placed her in an old photo-album for safe keeping. She's tucked in with my favorite picture; the one of Jordan and me when Grandpa took us on that fishing trip back when we were children. None of us ever managed to catch any fish, even though Grandpa insisted that the lake had once been filled with so many fish you could dump an empty net in and bring it back up, overflowing with trout. Instead, we returned to my mother with one bad case of poison-ivy, millions of misquito bites, three cases of bad sun-burn and four blood-sucking leeches... I'm not sure, exactly, why its my favorite picture as all I can remember of the weekend is pain.

I wonder if the picture will have any influence on Marie? If it does, I don't think it could be too horrible. Jordan and I look happy, which I probably was at the time.

Its sad how I can't remember much from my childhood. I hope Marie continues with this journal after she's grown so she'll be able to look back on her past and remember what she felt and what she thought. She probably won't let me see it after that, though.

Diary Entry

July 22nd 2005

Dear Diary,

I don't believe Marie enjoys violence. I can't give any reasonabl explanation for my belief, except for the unsettling feeling that formed at the pit of my stomache while I watched Lord of the Rings: Return of the King with my other children.

Every once in awhile, Nyx will figure a movie night to be an excellent idea, and after she's decided on the movie she would like to watch she'll shut the three of us (Nika, Nyx and me) in my bedroom with popcorn and chips until the movie is over.

The three of us sat on my bed; engrossed by the movie. (For different reasons, of course. Nyx isn't yet old enough to appreciate Viggo and Orlando like I do and I'm afraid that Nika never will.)

During a particularly bloody scene a disgusted feeling overcame me. I had never before felt anything like it. It was so unreal...

Marie was still tucked safely into my old photo-album that sat on the table at the foot of my bed, closest to the TV screen, and I realized that I wasn't feeling anything. Marie was the one feeling... whatever she was feeling, as I'm not exactly sure what it was that I experienced.

I wasn't realy feeling anything. I just... sensed that Marie was feeling some form of disgust towards the movie that was playing.

I've always been too aware of what people around me feel. When I spoke to her about it, years ago, mom said it was a gift and that I shouldn't question why I had been given it... but I think of it as a curse.

I have had too many horrible experiences with it to consider it a gift.

RP: The Phone Call...

~

'A piece of paper?'

"Yes. A piece of paper."

'So... This... Pice of paper will eventually turn into a little girl?'

Jordan's tone was filled with disbelief and Green sighed in frustration. Why did these things always seem so strange to him? He'd met Nika and Nyx a few times before, and he was well aware of the circumstances under which both of them had been born. He should have been accustomed to this by now.

"Yes. We've already gone over this."

'Does ma know?'

"No," she sighed, fidgetting with the hem of her bright red shirt, "You know that I really don't want to talk to her. She's so...

'Controlling?' Jordan supplied.

"Exactly." Green shrugged. She sat on the sofa in her living room talking loudly into the phone. All of her children were up in bed and the young woman had finally decided that it was time she'd told Jordan about Marie.

'You know... She does miss you.'

Green half-snorted half-laughed into the phone, an unattractive habit she had picked up from her grandmother. It was an ugly and disbelieving sound.

'Honestly. No matter what she says or what she does, she misses you.'

"Right."

'Green,' He sounded exhausted. An image of her brother rolling his eyes and rocking one of his sons to sleep floated into her head, 'I mean it. You should try and talk to her.'

Green said nothing. What could she say? How could she believe that her mother, Debra Bachman, a woman that was impossible please, wanted to see her? Her earliest memories of the woman had been of a wagging finger and accusing eyes.

'Please? She's heard so much about Nika and Nyx, and I'm sure she'd love to meet them.'

"And Marie?" Green lifted an eyebrow, "Does she know about Marie?"

'How could she? When I've only found out and you don't even talk to Ma.'

"Good point."

There was silence.

'So?'

"So what?"

'Why don't you invite Ma, Kass, Sue, me and the kids for a visit?'

"Do I have to?"

'Yes.'

"Fine."

'Excellent,' his voice had suddenly become happier, 'When should we come? Don't worry about phoning everyone and making any arrangements... I'll make sure we get there safe and sound.'

"Whatever. Whenever. There's almost always somebody home... and I work during the day, so if I'm not here Nyx and Nika will take care of you."

'Alright.'

"Whatever."

'Cheer up'

"Good-bye."

Green hung up. She WAS NOT pleased about this.

RP: Preparation

~

There was so much to do and so little time.

What ever the hell had possessed her to allow Jordan to talk her into letting her mother visit had long since fled and left Green feeling resentful. Why hadn't she put up more of a fight? Why had she agreed so easily? Why had she let him take control of the situation?

Why? Why? WHY?

Her brother had caught her at a time when she'd been particular vulnerable; on one of those rare occasions when she actually missed her mother. Yes, in spite of the fact that Green had spent the last year of her life avoiding the woman, Green did miss her mother sometimes. She would never admit it; to herself or to anyone else, but it was true... and Jordan had known.

Something in her voice must have given it away. When they'd talked on the phone... Jordan had been able to tell. He'd always been able to tell.

Damn him.

She did not want her mother to visit her. Odds were that the woman would start complaining about how unclean Green's house was and about how she hadn't had a haircut since the last time they'd seen each other.

"She wouldn't come forward and actually tell me that I'd done something wrong," Green spoke to herself as she vigorously polished the silver in the dining room, "It'll be the little things. Like a swipe of her finger... or a wrinkle of her nose."

Green half-laughed half-snorted, an unattractive habit she'd picked up from her grandmother, "I bet I'll find her dusting my living room one night while everybody's supposed to be asleep."

She set the last piece of silver back in the cabinet with a clang, shut the cabinet and turned around to find a tired looking Nyx and cob-web covered Nika staring at her.

"What?"

"Do you always talk to yourself?" Nyx blinked.

Green shrugged her shoulders and placed her hands on her hips defensively and stared down at the little girl, "So what if I do?"

Nyx blinked again and took a step backwards, "No big deal..."

Green turned her back on her children and crossed her arms. She was pissed off and she knew that she had no right to take it on her babies… and she honestly wasn't meaning to. If it had just been any other, regular cleaning day she wouldn't have been so irritable.

...but it wasn't just any other, regular cleaning day. She was working her a** off in order to please her mother.

Why did she want to please her mother?

It was something she'd been trying to do for the past... twenty some years...

Old hobbies die hard.

Nika and Nyx shared a significant glance behind their guardian's back. The pair of them knew Green well enough to know when to back off and not cause trouble... and even Nyx behaved when Green was in a bad mood.

"I'm going to go and finish cleaning up in the bathroom..." Nyx eased out of the dining room and darted up the stairs.

'You know,' Nika wrapped a comforting arm around his guardian, who hadn't moved, 'It might not be that bad.'

"You've never met her," Green shook her head, touched by his gesture, "You don't know whether it'll be bad or not."

'So... If I'm not around much while she's here you won't be angry at me, right?' He'd meant it as a joke, and he hoped that she would take it as one.

"Why?" she smirked up at him, "Planning on meeting up with Shi?"

A blush was hidden behind the mask he'd been cursed to wear, 'Maybe.'

"Well," Green laughed gently pushed away his arm, "You aren't going anywhere until your bedroom, the kitchen and the living room are clean up."

'Fair enough,' he nodded and exited the dining room.

Green watched him go with a smile on her face. Perhaps this visit wouldn't be too terrible as long as she had Nika, Nyx and Marie to keep her sane. At the thought of her third child; Green turned to the refrigerator and smiled at the page that was being held up by a magnet.

It might have been silly, but Green didn't like the thought of Marie spending all of her time stuffed into the old photo album. It would do her good to be out in the open some more.

Group RP: A Child is Born

Participants: Green, Fairy Godfather and Marie
Date: August 16, 2005

Green_Eyes
Questions.

She had so many.

Well; Green always had a ton of question swimming around inside of her head. She'd always been too curious for her own good and she would often wonder about things that most people wouldn't have even begun to consider.

But it was rare that so many of her questions revolved around one thing.

Marie.

The young, blonde woman had been longing to talk to somebody who knew a little bit more about where Marie had come from; somebody who could answer her questions and provide her with the information she would need to make sure Marie lived a happy, healthy life.

And so, Green found herself entering the library one afternoon, with a serious look on her face. She was dressed in bright and unusual colors, with Marie safely tucked into her jacket pocket.

"Hello?" she called, "Is anybody here?"

FairyGodfather

The library was always a bit dark, which confused FG a bit. Sometime he would have to put in better reading lights. It was only the fact that he was so familiar with the building that stopped him from bumping into the woman. He halted just beside her, taking her in for a moment before speaking.

"Good evening. How may I be of service?"

Green_Eyes
Green hadn't seen the man until he'd spoken and she was a bit startled when he appeared so suddenly. The caution in her eyes was soon replaced by a friendly twinkle when she realized that this man might be able to answer her questions. Joy!

"My name's Green," she held her right hand out for him to shake and reached into her jacket pocket with her left.

"I was wondering..." she retrieved the page she had fondly named Marie from her pocket and glanced at it, "I mean-

She didn't know where to begin. Now was her chance to finally get some answers... and her mind had gone completely blankly.

FairyGodfather

"Ah, yes..." FG took both of the woman's hands in his own, feeling the page's gentle vibration with closed eyes. "This one seems rather anxious. Hopefully we've not been keeping it long."

He opened his eyes and looked up again. "I'm the librarian. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. But we shouldn't keep this lovely lady waiting too much longer."

Green_Eyes
Questions?

Did she ever have questions. Many. And quite a few more had just been added onto the load.

She'd never seen a page grow into a child before. She supposed that only a few people had.

Did it hurt the child? What would happen? Would there be bright lights and swirling colors? Or did the child just appear?

In spite of the gears that were spinning inside of her head, the young woman felt relieved. Atleast he knew what was going on. The librarian seemed quite sure of himself... and it made Green feel more comfortable about the whole situation.

"Of course," she nodded. Excitement was begining to pool in the pit of her stomach. Soon, she would be a mother to another child.

FairyGodfather

"Yes. Well then, let me see." With practiced care, he eased the page out of its guardian's hands and into his own. The trembling became more apparent then, though whether it strangthened, the librarian couldn't tell. What he could tell, however... "It's nervous," he mentioned with a frown. "Well, let's see if we can fix that."

The page wasn't shaking with more force, but its speed had certainly increased. Faster and faster it shook, until the movement was almost invisible, the page blending into the hands that held it, vanishing into the scenery...

FG did a double take. "It... where did it go?"

Green_Eyes
Green's ears turned slightly pink when the librarian took Marie from her hands. She wasn't angry, actually, she was merely embarrassed that she hadn't thought of handing her to him in the first place.

Nervous? she thought, Well, that makes two of us.

She watched with wide, green eyes as the page shook...

..and then she gasped when the page completely dissapeared. She refrained from smacking the librarian and scolding him for losing her baby. Instead, she mentally scolded herself for thinking such thoughts.

It wasn't his fault Marie had suddenly dissapeared. He hadn't performed some kind of magic spell that had made her dissapear...

... but she was a mother. A mother that wanted her child back. It was amazing how attached she'd become to a piece of paper.

FairyGodfather

Luckily FG wasn't telepathic, nor was he even looking at Green. His eyes were closed again, but he seemed to be listening to something. After a few moments he raised one of his hands, gesturing to a nearby bookcase. "Come out, please. No one here will hurt you."

It seemed that the bookcase was content where it was... but a small girl shuffled out from behind it unhappily. She pulled her cape closer to her and looked up at the woman, searching her fearfully.

User Image

"I'm... sorry," she mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper.

Green_Eyes
At first, she was confused. Green watched FG with an unreadable expression set upon her face. He was... talking to a bookcase?

Wait...

Her eyes widened in surprise for what felt like the fiftieth time that night when the little girl stepped out from behind the bookcase. Was this Marie?

She seemed frightened. Green quickly turned her suprise into a pleased grin, eager to show Marie that there was nothing to be sorry for. She was worried that she had scared the child as Green had often scared children younger than Marie.

"Sorry for what?"

She couldn't take her eyes off of the beatiful little girl. Such a sight she was!

FairyGodfather

Finally, a guardian who wasn't weak in the knees. FG nodded approvingly, though this time he felt rather in need of a chair. He made the job look easy, but looks were commonly decieving.

"If you... two, need anything else, feel free to let me know." With a casual wave of his hand he started slowly back to his office in the labrynth of bookshelves.

Green_Eyes
"Sorry... for scaring you?"

Again, the voice was barely a whisper. Marie refused to meet her gaurdian's eyes. Instead, her cheeks turned pink and she shifted her weight from one foot to the other.

She knew who the woman was... and Marie couldn't help feeling nervous. Afterall, Green was dressed in bright colors and the older woman seemed to be the complete opposite of her.

Loud and outgoing.

Green smiled at FG's retreating back. The young woman was more observant than many people, her mother included, gave her credit for. She would have to bring him some hot chocolate or something sometimes... Guilt was begining to nibble at the edge of her brain. How could she have considered being angry at him? He must have been exhausted...

At Marie's words she turned back to the child and shook her head, "No need to be sorry, little one."

Diary Entry

~

August 18, 2005

Dear Diary,

Mother is so different from me. She's loud and friendly and I don't think she is afraid of anything. Her clothes never match and I'd be surprised if she had a single piece of black clothing. The colors are all so bright.

...Reds... Blues... Yellows... Oranges... Pinks...

So many. Sometimes, its hard to look at... but then again, its hard not to look at.

Nyx is much like mother, except for the colors. They act the same... the way they talk and what they say. Nyx doesn't like the colors so much, though. She wears a lot of black, against mother's wishes.

... and then, there's Nika. He's quiet. Well, he can't really say much because of the mask he wears. He can talk, mother says, but I'd only hear him inside of my head. She tried to explain it to me and I understood a little bit. How his people were cursed to wear masks. He was a king once, you know. Mother found him when she was out adventuring and she was chosen to take care of him. It is going to be a little strange talking with him. Mother says that only a very few people can hear him; people that are bonded to her (like Nyx and me) and other people that have been cursed to wear masks.

I'm comfortable in our home.

Right now, I have to share a room with Nyx because my room hasn't been painted yet. Mother said she wanted to wait for me, so that I could choose the colors for my room.

Nyx says she doesn't care what color I pick as long as it isn't pink...

I like pink.

...but I like yellow more. I think that is the color I'm going to paint my room.

Mother gave me a teddy-bear as a present. She's cute and I've decided to name her Winifred. I'm holding her right now, while I write this. I think I'll sleep with her beside my pillow tonight.

Yours Truly,
Marie

~

The little girl smiled to herself and looked around the bedroom she shared with her sister. Nobody was around...

Smiling to herself, Marie quickly tucked her journal back under her mattress and placed Winifred beside her pillow before she left the room, quietly shutting the door behind her.
