Genevieve watched with a blank stare as her attack failed and she was left to do nothing as a blast of heat was sent her way. She snarled and dodged the attack, starting to get angry. Pulling more fishy fins out of her pocket sack, she mixed them together and formed her water attack and shot it straight at Efreet. Perhaps itd be too tired to dodge.

The wind whipped fiercely around her as she clung to the mountainside. Finding the temple had been no problem, everyone in Emberfall knew where the massive gates to the sanctum were, but scaling the volcano to Efreet's resting place was only a task for the brave. The volcano, rising above the crevices and short planes that Emberfall itself sat on, was constantly surrounding by the harsh winds of the upper latitudes. Another gust nearly tore Corsage from the rocks and she dug her claws deeper into the crevices.

She dared not even open her tiny wings in such powerful winds, though she knew some older dragons were strong enough to simply fly to Efreet's chamber, she would be swept away. Her parents, during her brief rest at home, had told her that even a magician had been seen simply floating up. If I can't even defeat these winds, how can I hope to take down Efreet? But her resolve didn't waver and she latched onto another crevice, pulling herself closer to the cave near the top.

She was tired and sore when she finally reached the top, and she sunk to the floor just inside the doors of the sanctum to try and calm her heaving lungs. It was wonderfully warm inside, the heat clinging to her scales and soothing away the memory of the harsh winds. She had barely caught her breath when a harsh growl echoed from the depths of the sanctum.

"So now a child has come to try its hand. And a dragon child, no less." From the shadows, Efreet slowly walked forward, massive black claws clicking on the stone floor. He grinned, showing rows of long, sharp teeth.

Sucking in a breath, Corsage rose. Her chest still hurt, but there would be no breaks now. She had trained for this, defeated Sann to gain the confidence, and the parental approval, to finally stand before the God of her home. "Yes. I've come." The words came out jerky and nervous and she swallowed heavily. Lowering her head, she steeled herself. This is it. And she charged.

She hoped he was slow. He was huge, and one blow would most likely kill her, but if she could just get one good shot...Her claws raced forward ahead of her.

She didn't even see him move, but his blow felt like a boulder as he tossed her aside. She hit the wall and her breath escaped her.

"Too slow, young one. Come back when you're older." He laughed deeply and fixed her with that same grin.

Digging her claws into the cracks in the wall, she finally managed to pull air back into her lungs. Standing, she held his gaze and stood still a moment, letting the heat of the cave stand between them. Then she leapt again. Dodging from side to side, using the cracks in the tiles as leverage, she went below his hands to dig into his leg. She sucked in her breath as she leaned into her final leap and threw her claws forward.

His laughter rang in her ears before she even got close enough to hit him. Had he allowed her to get that close. His knee came up directly under her, but this time, she still had breath to cry out. Her voice mingled with his chuckles as the dull crack of her hitting the low ceiling of the sanctum echoed. She felt herself start to fall and she opened her eyes, his form was beneath her, rushing towards her as she fell.

Gritting her teeth through the pain, she rolled away from his leering face, whipping her tail to flip her in the air, falling behind him. She flung her claws up towards his unprotected back as she continued to fall.

She felt the wind move through her claws and she thought for a moment that she had him. But she missed. And pitifully. His head turned and the grin was there, white teeth mocking her. She hit the floor in an undignified heap and she coughed roughly. She didn't even have time to look up.

The kick was more of a sweep than a kick, but it threw her into the wall with enough force to once again take the breath from her body. His voice rumbled through the sanctum. "This is child's play, girl. Surely my people have not all become so weak." Corsage hit the floor once again, but this time wasted no time in rushing forward. Her body screamed but she shoved the pain away. His words seared her mind and she let a cry of frustration as she drew closer, her claws reaching.

This time she knew before she even got close that he was ready, and her attempts to stop were met with a hair raising slide on the stone floor and a perfectly presented target as she fell backwards. She thought for a moment that he wouldn't bother to attack after something so stupid, but that hope vanished as he clamped one massive fist around her outstretched leg. His grip could have snapped her leg in half, and his claws pierced through her scales as he lifted her off the floor.

Blood now running freely up her leg, she resisted a cry but it escaped as a pitiful whimper. That terrible grin filled her vision as Efreet lifted her to his face. "Silly, stupid child. Begone from my sight. Come back when you have some strength to challenge me with."

With that, he drew back to fling her from his resting place. Tears stung Corsage's eyes as she swung backwards helplessly from his painful grip on her leg. Maybe I'm not strong enough... But the despair was shortlived. No. I won't give up like this. As he flung his powerful arm forward, Corsage swiped her claws towards his side. As he let go and the rest of her body flew forward with the motion, she hoped it would be enough to hit him.

As she sailed through the hot air, she knew her claws had even come close to him. The entrance to the sanctum, and the whipping winds beyond, drew closer until she landed roughly and skidded to near a foot from the entrance and the drop below it.

She was humiliated. Corsage knew that others had managed to defeat Efreet, but somehow she....couldn't. No. The defiance returned and she stood in the cooler air of the entrance. A breeze from outside tossed her hair and she looked back at Efreet. No longer grinning in triumph, he crossed his arms and watched her turn to face him.

Corsage spread her sore and trembling feet. "No." The word was little more than a growl but Efreet heard it.

"No? You still wish to challenge me?" He uncrossed his arms and took a step forward. "I let you go because you are one of my own, child. Do not take my mercy lightly;" His mouth curled angrily. "I do not offer it twice."

"I do not need mercy!" The words burst from her, echoing through the cavern. "I have trained for this battle, and I have longed for it, and I will not be thrown away like garbage! I am your opponent, and you will either respect that, or I will die making you!" On impulse, she reached back for her dagger. The metal was still hot from inside the sanctum and it's weight lent strength to her hands. Fire still racing through her veins, she threw it with everything she had.

There was no triumph in his eyes this time. Corsage saw their unforgiving brutality in the small moment as Efreet swung his massive arm towards her. She heard the sickening sound of her ribs cracking and all went black for a moment. Then she hit the wall. The sound of her splintered bones grinding together made her want to scream.

But Efreet was moving again. Pounding towards her, the cave shook with his steps and Corsage heaved herself off the floor, wiping her tears away as she hunched from the pain in her side. He came closer and closer until he reached up to pound her into the ground with a clenched fist. Corsage's other knife appeared into her hands and she thrust it with what little strength she had left towards his unprotected chest.

He was faster than she thought, and Corsage would have cried out as he swept her knife hand away, if she had had the time. His other massive fist came up from the side and slammed her back against the wall. Her lost breath brought blood with it, and bluish green splatters peppered his muscled chest.

He held her there, trapped between his fist and the wall, choking on her own blood and trying in vain to squeeze out from his grip. Corsage flailed desperately, and finally got enough of a grip on his arm to send both legs over it and towards his furious face.

He batted her claws away as though they were flies, and dragged Corsage along the wall to throw her to the floor. She coughed roughly and once again, despair returned as she looked back at the God now lurching towards her. No, this isn't how it happens, I have to win, I have to win, I have to... The words repeated in her mind and she spit the blood tainting her mouth. He was above her now, teeth bared and claws reaching down to crush her. Corsage darted up as fast as she could, a cry of pain and desperation bursting from her, and hooked her claws towards his stomach. The sudden movement nearly knocked her out.

I'm just not strong enough... She thought dimly as she saw his fist swing down to knock her away from under him. Her shoulder popped with the blow and Coursage couldn't hold her scream in. It echoed off the walls and seemed to give Efreet pause.

But only for a moment. He was coming again and Corsage could barely lift her head. Her shoulder stuck out at an odd angle. She coughed again, and it racked her whole body painfully. He was above her again. And time seemed to slow as he swung out to deliver the last crushing blow. It wasn't supposed to be like this, it wasn't supposed to be like this.... The fist continued to fall and all hope left Corsage.

"Nooo...."

It was much further than she had anticipated to the northern volcano, Emberfall, as she recalled. One of the few places she looked in on, Rosel liked to watch it spew fire down the mountainside. It looked a lot less imposing from above. And a lot less hot.

It wasn't as crowded as she would have imagined and she got few enough stares that she walked boldly through the busy marketplace. The glances were few enough that she began to wonder if it was by something other than her looks that let Sann know she was Twilif. Rosel knew the laws of her people about interfering too directly in the lives of those below, so knew they couldn't have seen her kind often.

But she ignored it nonetheless and strolled nonchalantly towards the fire god's temple, rising like a beacon above the shacks of the marketplace. She passed a large stall just before the temple entrance selling healing droplets and charms. The keeper was an old dragon with cracked and thinning scales, and a younger dragon, not even old enough for wings, dashed between the stacks fetching things for customers. Rosel paused to look at the wares just long enough to trace a small symbol into the corner support beam.

As she passed into the outer sanctum of the temple, she heard a satisfying crumble and a chorus of suprised shouts.

Once well inside, she was vaguely suprised to find that Efreet would be considerably more difficult to get to than Sann had been. A jagged rock wall rose just inside the temple gates, and looking up Rosel could just barely make out the lip of the sanctum against the face of the mountain. Taking in a deep breath, she suddenly wondered why she should bother. Her anger had simmered over the long journey, sated by the trail of minor destruction she had left in random backwoods towns along the way. Put you in your place.... Sann's words rung in her head and Rosel's determination solidified. Her place indeed. She beat her wings once to give her a start up the wall and began to climb.

Despite the wind, it wasn't a difficult climb. Both her wings and her lifting magic kept her moving steadily upwards until she pulled herself over the lip of the inner sanctum. Her clothes had already been ripped from her untimely kick to the lower world, but now she was dirty as well. A bath was in short order after she was done here.

It was even hotter so close to the volcano mouth, but she ignored the heat and concentrated on the rumblings until she heard footsteps. Slow and heavy, she waited until Efreet came into the dim light from the outside.

"So many children to challenge me these days..." His low laugh rumbled with the mountain. "Am I ever to receive a true battle?"

His words bit at her pride, but she swallowed her anger and tucked it away in her mind. "I've come to challenge you for your symbol, oh mighty one." She sneered at him through her hair and bowed slowly, never taking her eyes off him.

Efreet heard the sarcasm and the humor dropped from his eyes. "Then have at me, child, and let me show you what pain is."

His words dug at her again and she flung her arm out, leasing a bolt of lightning towards him.
