Part one. Events took place on July 9th. Because, yeah, that's when I started typing this whole thing up. >>;

She was extremely grateful to get out of the house for once, and not just to go to the Inn run by Zarien and Moriko. Though they were her close friends and she had a permanent room there, from time to time she did want to go other places. It was only natural, right? She may dislike about ninety-nine percent of the population in Gaia, and she may loathe to inhabit any space that even remotely resembled crowded, but she could honestly say that she cared for the ones that were staying with her, and she wanted them to be happy. So she had agreed to let a small cluster of them drag her out here, and it had turned out to be one of the best things she had let happen in a long, long time. Considering all that she had been through and what she was expecting to happen in the very near future, this may be the last chance for her to get some 'quiet time' in for a long while.

"Aaaiiieeee!"

A high-pitched scream resounded close by, rousing Rhiannon from her daydream and her long ears snapped to attention, at least as best as the floppy appendages could. The earrings glittered in the late afternoon sunlight, along with the ring in the center of her lower lip, and the black lenses of her sunglasses caught a ray of the golden light and glinted brightly. She straightened up on the bench she had been resting on and craned her head to the right, looking down the tree- and bush-lined walkway and trying to identify who had voiced the horrible screech. The concrete path dropped in a slight decline for a few yards before turning off to the left and disappearing out of sight, and she loosed a soft sigh upon realizing the glorious rest she had been taking was now certainly over with.

"Rhia! I need help, they won't come down!"

That voice she recognized. It was Hannah, one of the Tahnee she had adopted from an Orphanage not too long ago... or, more accurately put, one of the Tahnee Zarien had dumped into her unsuspecting lap. The Siberian tigress was one of the few sane ones in the household, and she often helped Rhia look out for the littler ones, which truly was a blessing for her. The heavily pregnant demoness got to her feet, with some difficulty and a wince, and slowly started down the path where Hannah had called from. It was, no doubt in her mind, Emmi and Addy that were the ones Hannah was yelling about; they were always getting into trouble, more often than not they simply needed each other, no outside help required.

"I'm coming!" She called back irritably as another shriek sounded, followed by Hannah crying out her name yet again. She didn't sound scared or panicky, which was always a plus, but still, Rhia hurried as best she could; taking the decline slow and absently supporting her protruding stomach with her left hand. No more rest for her, as if she had ever been really resting in the first place.

As she rounded the corner, her slitted, crimson eyes caught sight of Hannah and Alexei, the deer-boy keeping a comforting hand on Madison's shoulder as she stood next to him, small black hands covering her mouth and hazel eyes wide. Hannah was standing a few feet in front of them, clearly angered by the way her tail twitched violently and the pale, striped fur on it and her ears bristled. Adjusting the strap of the small, leather bag more firmly onto her left shoulder, the demoness stepped up to Hannah and lifted her gaze, an immediate sigh of annoyance passing through her dark lips.

"What the hell..." She muttered, more to herself than to anyone else as she stepped up to the small fence that kept a good ten feet between the people and the cages that housed the animals. "This is what I get for taking them to a ******** zoo..."

Placing her hands against the rough wood and leaning forward slightly, she tilted her head back and looked up towards the top of the cage where two small, winged creatures fluttered in a frantic manner; the rapidly waning sunlight splashing across her tanned features. Addy seemed to be zipping back and forth, from one side of Emmi to the other and then back again, her white and grey hair swaying back and forth and her honey-hued eyes as wide as saucer plates. Emmi on the other hand, simply fluttered near the mesh caging of the exhibit (Rhia didn't bother reading any of the signs placed around the fence, but from the way the enclosure was set up she guessed it was for a small wildcat, perhaps a lynx), both hands appearing to be grasping the crisscrossing wires. She lifted a slender hand and touched her fingertips to her brow, feeling the first signs of a migraine coming on. She couldn't wait until she was no longer pregnant. No headaches, no sensitivity to the heat, no nausea, no sudden cravings for food she normally didn't eat, but most of all, no more excruciating kicks from the baby.

But she couldn't think about any of that right now, she had to get those two to stop... doing whatever it was they were doing up there. Brushing her red and gold bangs away from her scarred face, she frowned before raising her voice at them, not trying in the least to hide her annoyance and anger, "What the hell are you two doing up there?"

Addy let out a sharp, surprised 'yeep' sound and darted away from the fence, zipping downwards and into some bushes; she was out of sight at breakneck speed. Emmi, however, stayed right where he was and merely cringed and hunched his shoulders up, pulling his head down as far as he could, as if maybe he could make it sink all the way down between his shoulders. After a moment of huddling that way he lifted his head to turn and look down at the pissed off demoness, his innocent face pale and orange eyes brimming with tears. Rhia for a moment was tempted to yell at him again. Don't you dare cry, damnit! Do you hear me? But she controlled her temper and simply tilted her head, her face no longer angry, just tired and exasperated. "Emmi, it's okay... just come down here and tell me what's going on."

"I... I... I..." His face screwed up and the tears sparkled in the orange-gold rays of the sun, his raven hair being splashed with an almost crimson hue.

"No, Emmi, gods!" Rhia felt anger and despair bubble to life again, and absently her hand lifted from the fence and stroked the side of her rounded stomach. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she let it out slowly before open them and focusing on the small cherub once again, just wishing he for once he wouldn't do this. "Just come down, it'll be okay."

"I can't!" He wailed, suddenly bursting into a fit of sobs, hot, fat tears trailing down his chubby face. "M-my hand... is... is... is stuck in the fence!"

This last part came out as a screechy, blubbery mess, but somehow Rhia was able to understand him. Perhaps from hearing him speak that way so often, after all, most of the things he got into ended this way. She just really wished for once he wouldn't cry, crying was just about the worst thing in her mind. The demoness turned her gaze towards the bushes that the other winged child had zipped into moments before and her eyes narrowed behind the sunglasses. Somehow, it always seemed to turn out that Addy was the one that got Emmi into trouble, and that just made it worse. In a voice that was chillingly calm, but also bade no room for disobedience, she spoke to the golden-tinged leaves and they trembled on the first syllable, "Addy, get out here. Now."

After a very brief hesitation, Addy stuck her head out of the bushes and looked over to Rhia; eyes still wide, but now tears sparkled at their corners. The winged woman ignored Emmi's hysterics for a moment as she focused her attention on the other cherub, hands moving to her hips and right brow arching above the thick plastic of her sunglasses. "What, in the name of the gods, did you do this time? And don't try to pull that 'I didn't do anything' or make with the waterworks, I can assure you it won't work."

Addy hung her head, but didn't cry. She pulled herself from the tangled branches of the small bush and hovered just in front of it. She brushed a few twigs and leaves from her tunic before moving her tiny hands to clasp behind her back, eyes staring glumly at the floor, "I... dared him to stick his hand in the cage..."

"You what?" Rhia nearly gaped at her for a moment before slipping her thumb and index finger under her sunglasses, lightly rubbing her closed eyelids. Surely this one took the cake, and what made it better, her oncoming migraine now really was a migraine. Why-oh-why did she agree to take them here again...? "It's a wonder I haven't gone into premature labor..." She sighed and pointed with one hand to Emmi, who had stopped sobbing but was still sniffling. "Go help him."

"I tried!" Addy said, waving her arms emphatically, "That's why he screamed."

"Well, it hurt!" He yelled at her, wiping furiously at the tears on his face with his free hand. His hair was in disarray, and the cuff on the sleeve of his tunic that was on the trapped wrist was tattered, but other than that he looked unharmed, which the pregnant demon was thankful for. Small favors, perhaps...

"Emmi, let Addy help you." Rhia said to him, trying to sound as gentle as she possibly could while an imaginary man beat a large drum labeled 'pain' in the center of her skull. She turned her crimson gaze to the girl, bangs falling across her forehead and hanging in front of her eyes. "Help him, don't hurt him."

The female cherub hung her head once again and she flew up to where Emmi was stuck, white wings fluttering. From her point on the ground, Rhia couldn't really see what was going on, but both cherubs looked intent and were hunching over the boy's arm. After a moment Addy backed away a little, grabbed Emmi's forearm with both hands and planted her feet against the cage.

"Addy, don't!" Hannah shouted, and Rhia could hear Madison and Alexei both gasp behind her, but there wasn't anything any of them could do about it now. A second later Addy yanked, Emmi screamed in a shrill, pain filled voice, and after a moment that seemed to go on for an hour, both cherub's suddenly broke away from the fence and went tumbling through the air. Both managed to get their bearings and keep themselves aloft, but Addy still looked mad and Emmi cradled his wrist, soft whining sounds coming from the back of his throat.

Rhia let out a soft sigh, too drained to chastise Addy anymore or tell Emmi to stop, she simply stepped over to him and gently took hold of his arm. There were a few red marks on his wrist and one scratch on the back of his hand, below his thumb, but it wasn't deep enough to bleed. Beyond that, his wrist seemed perfectly fine, and so she looked up at him and gave him the best smile she could muster, gently ruffliing his already messy hair with her hand. "You'll be okay."

At that exact moment, from farther down the walkway, Zander appeared, Sean on his left and Colleen on his right, the older boy holding one of each of their hands in his. The two children were each clutching an ice cream cone in their other hand, Colleen's a pale pink and Sean's a dark brown. As if to subconsciously prove that Rhia was correct on her assumption that the boy cherub was fine, both he and Addy seemed to instantly forget about what had just happened when they laid their eyes on what the other two children had. Identical squeals of delight echoed from the two and they flew towards the trio, fists pumping in the air in a rather comical way.

"Ice cream!" They both shouted, again in unison, and their kamikaze flight path towards Zander caused Colleen and Sean to drop his hands and vacate the immediate area in a hurry. The poor boy had nowhere to go and thus was assaulted by frantic hugs and beating of two pairs of feathered wings. He gently grasped one of each of their hands, laughing softly as he pulled them away from his face and noted his glasses were lopsided. He released their hands long enough to adjust them, but to keep them from straying and getting into more, he took their hands up again right after, "Okay, okay, I get it. You guys want ice cream, does anyone else want to come?"

Alexei looked down at Madison, who promptly smiled and nodded her head. Hannah glanced at Rhia, who shrugged lightly and wrapped her arms around her stomach, giving them a small, amused smile. Hannah turned back to the others and gave a shrug of her own, her pale ears twitching. "Let's all go then, we'll take a break and then go see the last few animals before heading home."

As they all headed down the shadow-speckled path and past the cage that had started all the drama, Rhia hung back a moment, relishing the peace and quiet that came with the departure of the group of children. She didn't find them nuisances all the time, but lately she found herself wishing more and more that she could just be alone. It wasn't all from the horrid mood swings her pregnancy brought on either, but she didn't want to think about it.

She didn't want to think about him.

Absently brushing her bangs away from her eyes, she started down the path after them, moving in the cute and slightly awkward duck waddle all women seemed to pick up in their last months of carrying. Her eyes had taken on a golden tinge behind the sunglasses, and her right hand slowly crept up to her face; fingertips lightly brushing against the dark, raised scar on her right cheek. After only a few steps something caught and held her eye off to one side of the path, and as she stepped up to it, she realized it was a shard of glass. No, not glass, a piece of a mirror whose shape first reminded her of a triangle, but as she continued to gaze down at it, it looked further and further from a triangle. Lifting her gaze, she glanced around and noted there were no other pieces lying in the vicinity, just this one lonely sliver.

After a moment of contemplation, she bent down (which was no easy task thanks to the passenger in her womb) and delicately plucked the piece off the ground, setting it flat in her palm as she straightened up with an obvious grimace of pain. She held it a moment, not really knowing why she had picked it up in the first place. It was a little shorter than the length of her hand, including her fingers, one end being much wider than the other (she now saw it resembled more of an icicle shape) and broken to a fine point. The larger end wasn't flat but jagged, zigzagging twice to create two smaller tips on that end, but they looked just as sharp.

Perhaps it was her maternal side speaking to her, with a child on the way that side seemed to stand out more and more, or perhaps she just used common sense... however human it seemed at the moment. Glancing around, she looked for a trash bin to toss the shard into, not wanting to leave it lying here where a kid could just come and scoop it up and give themselves one hell of a booboo. At first she didn't see any, so she simply stood, undecided a moment longer before reaching down with her free hand and unzipping her bag. She rummaged through the contents for a moment before extracting a large, pale rose colored handkerchief with an R embroidered in one corner in black thread; dark red roses surrounding this with leaves and stems of a rich green. She wrapped the piece of mirror in the cloth, intending on throwing it away once she spied a garbage bin, and slipped it back into her bag.

Not bothering to zip the bag back up (though she detested zoo's, she knew there were hundreds of places where visitors could throw things away), she started down the path once again, bitterly amused with herself that she should care what happened to someone who came along after she was long gone. If the person was stupid enough to grab the shard, well, they deserved to get their hand sliced and diced. But image of a child grabbing it kept popping back into her head, and as her left hand absently stroked her stomach and her right hand touched the scar on her cheek, she knew she wasn't going to toss it back.

Part two, events also took place on July 9th.

Rhiannon stood just on the main path, near the side trail that wound around a small mound filled with a colorful splash of marigolds and pansies, the footpath leading up to a relatively small building that housed some of the many restrooms the zoo offered. The sun had almost fallen out of the sky entirely; a small fiery orange sliver still able to be seen at certain points on the zoo grounds, but at the moment the trail the winged demoness stood on was ruled by shadows. Which was alright with her, she disliked the sun anyway, it hurt her eyes, thus the reason she was more of a night owl than anything. Her slender fingers were linked together under her stomach, the position causing her knee-length skirt to rise up to mid thigh and expose long, muscled, and well tanned legs. Even during her pregnancy, the only things that seemed to change were the size of her stomach and a certain something in the depths of her eyes.

She turned her crimson gaze towards the small, stone building that seemed to be no color at all and raised her right brow. Emmi and Addy had been in their respective restrooms for nearly five minutes, and she was beginning to think that they weren't coming out anytime soon and she'd have to go in after them. The others had gone on ahead, wanting to take their time in seeing the last few exhibits, and she suddenly wished she had made them wait. She didn't want to deal with the two cherubs on her own, even if all she had to do was spit out their name and they would behave. They had been out all day, and frankly she was tired. No, not just tired; exhausted. She couldn't wait to get back home, lie down on her bed and sleep for four weeks straight. Not that she'd be able to, but it was nice to toy with the idea.

Her long ears twitched and she blinked, surfacing from her thoughts as she heard a door swing open; Addy flitting out and into view. Just as the girl did so, Emmi emerged from the door on the opposite side of the building, this causing Rhia to smile to herself at what seemed like a planned exit on both their parts. She unlinked her fingers and tilted her head, eyebrows rising above her sunglasses and hands raising in the air as if to say well?

"I'm ready." Addy chimed happily, and Emmi nodded his agreement; both small children flitting along the path ahead of the woman, speaking in soft tones and giggling at each other. She sighed softly, turning to follow them and placing a hand against the small of her back; a wince passing over her features. Her back didn't hurt too badly at the moment, but it seemed if it wasn't her back it was her stomach itself, and if it wasn't her stomach it was her head or her feet. At the moment it was her head and her feet; her feet from walking around all day and her head from the aggravation the children had unwittingly caused.

As she walked down that path and the trees that lined it waned and then disappeared altogether, she noted there wasn't really anything down this way save for one large, enclosed building. She caught sight of a glimmer of Addy's silvery hair just before the door swung shut, and her gaze flicked to the large block letters on the brick-colored building, just above the entrance. REPTILE REFUGE it read, and she arched a brow, a little surprised to see Addy going in there. After all, the cherub was scared to death of lizards, snakes and anything that even remotely resembled them or their kin. It also struck her as amusing that the building was dubbed a 'refuge'. After all, were the creatures not locked up in a cage, destined to spend the rest of their lives that way? What kind of refuge was that?

As Rhia stepped up to the door and opened it, she was immediately hit with the different degrees in temperature. While the outside world was cooling off nicely as the sun relented its hold and withdrew its harsh glare, the inside of this place was almost hot; warm and stifling at the least. She didn't mind warm weather all that much, but still, it was a little absurd to have such a place designed to make the visitors feel like they were walking through a sauna with their clothes on. As she stepped inside and let the door quietly swing shut behind her, she saw why it was so warm when you first stepped in. The walls were done in a craggy, red-orange style, almost like you were in a cave. The lights in the ceiling were few and far in between, but the heating lamps that hung over the exhibits of the reptiles not only brightened the place, but made it exceedingly humid.

Desert creatures were first, their terrariums filled with rocky outcroppings, tawny sand and dried up twigs; hardly a green plant in sight. She recognized a few species; rattlesnakes, Gila monsters, tarantulas and scorpions (which technically weren't reptiles, but she doubted this zoo cared too much for accuracy), but none of them held her interest for long. All she wanted was to get out of there and get home. Her sneakers scuffed softly against the floor as she walked, her sunglasses perched on the end of her nose and her crimson eyes glowing faintly in the gloom. Gradually, the temperature dropped to a bearable and then an almost pleasant degree, giving way to other kinds of snakes and lizards (and large, hairy spiders). She pushed her sunglasses up to the bridge of her nose and figured the venomous ones were all back towards the beginning, where the visitors were fresh and keen on the idea of staring through glass at unmoving animals; the deadly ones were sure to hold their interest longer than the others.

Just then there was a loud screech from up ahead, halting the demoness in her tracks and causing a wince of pain to cross her features. The shriek had been rather loud and high pitched, and in this enclosed area it did a small number on her long, sensitive ears. Before she could register what was going on, Addy rushed around a corner and straight at her, arms out and eyes so wide they looked ready to pop right from their sockets. The winged woman was only able to get out a bewildered "What the..." before the small cherub slammed into her chest, nearly knocking the wind out of her and pushing her back a few steps. She almost lost her balance, and in the act of flaring her wings and stretching her arms out to the sides, the strap of her bag slid from her shoulder and it fell to the floor with a light thud; a few items spilling out of the unzipped opening as it toppled to its side.

In the end Rhia didn't fall, and though the 'attack' only lasted mere seconds, it seemed like an hour to her, perhaps likewise to the girl. The silver haired cherub didn't cling to her for long though; as her head whipped around to look down the aisle she had come as triumphant laughter drifted to their ears. Addy shrieked again, this time the sound filled with anger and humiliation, not fear, and she released the demoness; whirling and darting back down the path she had come from. The pregnant woman just stood there for a moment, eyebrows raised and lips parted slightly, her face nothing but a blank mask of confusion as she heard first one door slam shut, then presumably the same door again as Addy chased - who else could it be? - Emmi outside. She wasn't even mad, which was what she should have been. Addy could have injured herself, or they both could have ended up on the floor, or worse, her baby could have been hurt.

As if to echo that last sentiment, she gasped loudly and her eyes flew open wide as a stabbing pain tore through the left side of her stomach; by far the most agonizing pain she had had during her pregnancy. It felt like someone did stab her, with a red hot poking iron, and her hands clutched the silky fabric of her dress, her muscles seizing up and her mind screaming frantically, Oh gods, it's happening right here. I'm going into ******** labor and I'm by myself and no one will hear me scream for help. Oh s**t, please no... why did you have to leave me? Damn you, why did you make me have to go through this alone? Without you? I ******** need you and you left me, you b*****d!

She remained frozen that way for a good five minutes, muscles taught and back hunched, the pain never increasing but never lessening either. Her eyes had squeezed shut and her breathing was loud and ragged, wings trembling, hands still clutching her stomach as small beads of sweat formed on her creased brow. If it was a contraction, something was insanely wrong; the pain was lasting far too long and seemed too severe for it to be the first one. Then again, if something was wrong with the baby the contractions may not start out small and gradually build up, her body would know and would try and get the baby out and into helping hands as soon as it could.

Only there were no helping hands, and Rhia had to sink her fangs into her lower lip to keep a cry of pain from tearing free, the pressure almost hard enough to draw blood. Slowly, and what seemed like a lifetime later, the pain lost its razor sharp edge and (quite grudgingly it seemed) sank to a hard throb, almost like a stitch, on the left side of her stomach. She let her breath out in an explosive sigh and cracked her eyes open, the irises a swirling mixture of gold and orange behind her sunglasses. She stayed hunkered forward for another minute or two, afraid that if she straightened it would send the pain skyrocketing again, but soon she found she couldn't bear the uncomfortable position any longer and she rose; shoulders straightening. Her tail twitched agitatedly, and the bi-colored feathers on her wings ruffled, almost puffing themselves out on their own accord because of their owner's distress. She tried to swallow and found her throat was too dry for the muscles to work properly, and she absently reached for the bag that was no longer resting against her hip.

Glancing down in mild surprise, she saw it had fallen to the floor and spilled a few of its contents. Her lips thinned into a bloodless line as she grimaced, stretching until they resembled an ugly, horizontal gash across her flushed face. Cradling her stomach, she knelt down as gingerly as she could, body tensing at first and expecting another wave of pain to slap her. But the piercing agony didn't come, only the dull throb remained, and for that she was extremely grateful. Reaching down, she picked up her water bottle (which was now almost completely empty), unscrewed the cap and pressed the opening to her lips; finishing off the lukewarm water in one long swallow and realizing as she did so her headache was gone. Again, small favors, she supposed, were the ones most welcome. Replacing the cap, she righted her bag and shoved the empty bottle inside, reaching down for the figure of a tiger Sean had wanted at the souvenir shop, near the main entrance of the zoo. She stuffed that in as well and went for the last item, hesitating for only a moment before picking up the handkerchief clad mirror shard.

Staring down at the rose made up of blood colored thread, she realized she had completely forgotten about intending on throwing it away. She likely would have walked right out of the place with the piece of garbage still tucked safely into her bag, had Addy not rammed into her like a freight train. She hesitated again before slowly starting to unfold the piece of square material, not really sure why she was doing it. She just... wanted to see the shard again.

She moved the last flap of blush colored fabric, revealing the shard as it rested on top of the handkerchief in her hand and gazed down at it. It was a piece of mirror, a broken piece no less, but she found it somehow pretty. Maybe it was the shape it had broken into, or maybe she was just caught up in another one of her 'moods' she had been getting since becoming pregnant. Whatever it was, she was kind of against throwing the almost icicle shaped item away. Reaching over with her left hand, she carefully plucked the shard from the handkerchief and raised it to eye level. She had it turned slightly to the left, so it wasn't aligned with her face, and the first image she saw reflected in it was not the lenses of her sunglasses, but the slightly blurry image of a snake residing in a terrarium over her shoulder. She narrowed her eyes a little at it, the snake's head looking... feathered. Dropping her hand that held the shard she turned around and looked to the exhibit, the corners of her lips pulled down in a puzzled frown.

Walking the short distance between her and the glass, she realized that she hadn't looked close enough in the mirror to see that the snake was in the middle of swallowing its dinner, which was a snow white bird of some kind. That struck her as strange, seeing what was obviously a once beautiful bird being devoured by an equally beautiful snake... didn't zoos normally feed their snakes dead rats and rabbits or something? The snake was large and it regarded her with round, black eyes that held a golden ring in their depths; its muscles ceaselessly working as it pulled the bird carcass further and further into its mouth and ultimately, to its stomach. The demoness stood, transfixed for a moment, as she watched the snake's muscles shift beneath its scales. The movements were almost like a dance, graceful and fluent, like the serpent's skin wasn't skin at all but some sort of multicolored liquid. She shifted her gaze to a small sign just below the glass window, a large, black arrow below the sign pointing to the right.

You are looking at this Zoo's only King Cobra snake!

The King Cobra snake is the largest venomous snake in the world. It preys on mice, rats, lizards, birds, frogs, fish, and even other snakes! They subdue their prey with venom and then swallow it whole, head first. The top and bottom jaws are attached to each other with stretchy ligaments, which let the snake dislocate them from one another and swallow animals wider than itself. Snakes can't chew their prey; food is digested by very strong acids in the snake's stomach. It can even go without food for months.

Learn more here!

"No thanks," Rhia murmured to the large plaque on the wall, to the right of the sign she had just read and to where the arrow was pointing. Her eyes once again turned to the snake that was slowly swallowing the bird, black, gold-ringed eyes gazing up at her, unblinking and suspicious. For the second time she noted the brown, black, and cream colored scales, how they shone, almost like they were wet, but she knew it was just an illusion. Most snakes had that look to their scales, that's why some people thought they might be slimy if you touched them. She grinned at that, white fangs glinting in between her dark lips, and turned away from the snake to let it finish its meal without an audience. Humans were so stupid sometimes, just about the only reason she ever conversed with one was for the fact that she knew they would do or say something so stupid it was amusing.

And they hadn't disappointed her yet.

She looked down at the shard in her left hand and then the handkerchief in her right, both items held in front of her round stomach, and she suddenly did a double take and looked back to the broken piece of mirror. It was... glowing? She raised it closer to her face, sunglasses coming into view for a moment as she studied it. She couldn't be positive, but yes, she was pretty sure that it was glowing faintly in the dim lighting of the building. She laughed softly to herself, the sound a dry chuckle that fell dead in the still air almost as soon as it left her lips. Perhaps the pain had fiddled with her perspective of things, and she was beyond tired, so one could safely assume that she was seeing things. Still...

As she made her way back to her fallen bag, Rhia absently wrapped the shard of mirror in the handkerchief again, having never even made a conscious decision to do so, just doing it without thinking about it. She bent over slowly, her free hand resting against the front of her stomach for a second before reaching down and snatching up the bag. Slipping the strap onto her right shoulder, she carefully slid the covered shard back into the back, this time making sure to zip it closed. She folded the flap down over the zipper, pressing the spot where the magnetic snap was and it caught onto the other piece, holding the flap closed.

Adjusting the strap on her shoulder one more time, she shuffled slowly and quietly towards the exit, or at least what she assumed was the exit; one hand reaching up and wiping away the thin layer of perspiration that coated her smooth forehead. She no longer bothered to glance into the exhibits as her hand soothingly stroked her enlarged stomach, the only thing on her mind then was getting home as quickly as she could without upsetting the baby again; she did not want to deal with another pre-birth tantrum, or whatever the hell it had been.

It seemed all children were a pain, even before they entered the world.

The exit to the zoo loomed overhead as the group left for the day. The shard inside Rhia's backpack continued to glow brighter and brighter as they walked, though it was safely tucked away where no one would see. Eventually it shimmered and melted away, and the handkerchief that held it folded within itself uselessly. In complete silence, chubby little greyish-green fingers flexed for the very first time as they grasped onto the straps of his mother's backpack, and a few seconds later, the little toddler would be found riding his mother's back, holding onto the bag he had just been riding in a moment before.

Events took place on July 9th.

Rhiannon sighed softly and tilted her head back, crimson eyes lifting to take in the black, iron gates of one of the zoo's exits. She was very relieved that she and the children were on their way out of this place, and shortly on their way home, but something wasn't right. There was a small part of her that knew something was amiss, something that wasn't quite set up the way it should be. She could normally ignore foreboding feelings rather well, but this one hung in the back of her mind like a bur clung to an animal's fur. Passing it off as just the imminent birth of her child didn't help either, and though the feeling aggravated her, it also worried her.

As the four youngest broke away from the others, Colleen and Sean on foot and Addy and Emmi in the air, Hannah and Zander called after them in unison. The two wingless Tahnee stopped and looked back, but the cherubs paid no heed and continued to flit to and fro, in seconds vanishing out of sight and out through the open gates. Hannah took Colleen's hand as they caught up and frowned, her rounded ears swiveling back just before her head followed and she gazed at Rhia. "Will they be okay?"

"I'm sure they will, if not..." Rhia's voice trailed off and a look of confused surprise passed over her tanned features, her body dipping to the right slightly as the bag she was carrying got... heavier. Hannah's free hand flew to her mouth and she let out a small gasp, the look on her face mimicked in the children that were still present and able to see what had happened.

A baby had crawled out of the winged woman's bag and proceeded to climb onto her back, large, golden eyes flicking curiously from shocked face to shocked face.

Rhia immediately reached back and grasped one of the small, chubby arms of the child, pulling it from her back and swinging it around to hold it in front of her at arm's length. The child let out a loud hissing whine, the demoness' actions sending a dull pain shooting through his arm. His two tone wings fluttered uselessly behind him and his thick tail curved in the air, mouth yawning open to reveal long, needle sharp fangs. Never one to invite trouble from things she didn't understand, Rhia set the child down on the ground before it had a chance to bite her (if that's what it intended on doing) and took two steps back from it, eyeing it suspiciously from behind her sunglasses. Zander immediately stepped forward, as if to kneel down next to the toddler, but Rhia raised her hand and shook her head. "No, wait a minute. Just because it looks like a child doesn't mean it is one."

Hannah glanced at Zander, who returned the skeptical look, then looked over at Rhia with an expression that said something like you're way too paranoid, but she didn't pay them any heed. They would, after all, react the same way had they been around as long as she and seen the things she had. The child, his reptilian features too prominent to miss, gazed up at them with slitted eyes, small hands grasping at one another uncertainly. Rhia remained standing a few feet away for a moment longer, studying the child intently and trying to pick up something from it, its age, its race, its strength, anything that would help her. Hannah let out a slightly exasperated sigh and stepped up to him, kneeling down and holding her arms out. Rhia hissed under her breath as Hannah smiled to the child, but didn't say anything. If the stupid tigress wanted to do that, fine, let her do it, serves her right if she got bitten.

The toddler blinked and then let out a quick series of jumbled half-words that didn't form any coherent phrases before struggling to his feet, short arms opening as he stood facing Hannah and smiling. The blonde didn't wait to see if he was going to walk to her or not, she simply leaned forward and scooped him into her arms, eliciting a sweet giggle from him as she stood up. She glanced over at Rhia and raised her eyebrows, setting the child on her hip and taking one of his small hands in her own, a smile curving her pale lips as the small fingers curled around one of her own. "Are you done glaring at him?"

"I was not glaring, what I'd like to know is where he came from." Rhia looked over to the exit in time to see Emmi and Addy poke their heads in, obviously wondering why no one had followed them out yet. When the pair laid their eyes on the newcomer in Hannah's arms, they both gasped loudly and flitted over. The child at first looked up at them warily, but after he looked over to Rhia and saw she wasn't worried, a smile broke out on his face and he raised a small, gray-green hand up to Emmi, fingers making slow, clutching gestures.

Oh, hell no. Rhia thought, her own slitted eyes widening a touch behind her sunglasses as she saw the child throw a questioning glance in her direction. She knew what that kind of thing meant, any mother would, and she'd be damned if she was going to just pick up some jackass's child because they were too stupid to keep tabs on it. She waved a hand at Hannah and sighed, "Bring it here, we have to tell someone that we found a lost kid."

"He's not an it, Rhia, he's a he." Hannah said, an amused smile on her lips, but she did as told and carefully handed the boy over to the demoness. As golden eyes fixed on who he was being passed to, the toddler let out a soft squeal of delight, arms opening wide and reaching for Rhia as she took him in her arms. It was a little awkward at first, with her stomach being so large, but she managed to get him in a comfortable position off to one side and for a moment just looked down into his upturned face. Only a naive child would be so trusting in her, he should know better, and she frowned down at him. They spent the better part of a minute simply looking at each other, both of their tails swaying idly back and forth, before the child laughed and reached out a hand to grasp one of her long ears. She inhaled sharply and jerked her head back just before his small fingers closed around it, her free hand coming up and gently lowering his, "Uh, no, you don't want to play with my ears."

She reached into her bag for a moment, not even realizing it should be closed and not open, and slipped her hand past the handkerchief to search for something to give the child to keep it happy and occupied. She intended on taking it... somewhere, and informing zoo personnel that she had found him by himself. Her mind halted for a moment, along with her searching hand, as she realized that the handkerchief was empty. Curling her fingers around it, she applied pressure until the material resided in a closed fist, not even a hint of the shard remaining inside it. She pulled it out and held it in front of her, opening her hand and looking down at it with confusion. The child tilted his head, blinking up at her before looking down at the handkerchief and promptly snatching it from her hand; twisting and poking it while talking to himself in what sounded like an alien language.

"Rhia, what's wrong?" Zander had stepped forward when Hannah handed the child to Rhia, and now Colleen, Sean and Madison all huddled around him, staring curiously up at the child that so resembled a snake with wings.

"Nothing, just... no, it's nothing. We need to locate someone and tell them we found a missing baby."

"Are their places like that at a zoo?" Hannah asked, voicing what Rhia had just been thinking.

"Well, I'm not sure. But there are lost and found things here, right?"

"But he's a baby, not someone's missing briefcase."

"Well I don't know what to do with him!" Rhia said, annoyed enough to raise her voice a little and pull the child's attention away from his 'toy' to her face. He posed a one-worded question that sounded similar to the word 'nanny' with an 'uh' at the end of it, then bent his head and toyed with the handkerchief some more, hesitantly sticking part of the embroidered rose in his mouth.

"We can go back to the main entrance and ask." Zander said softly, adjusting his glasses and looking at the boy in Rhia's arms. "I'm sure they know what to do in situations like this, I find it hard to believe this has never happened before."

"Maybe we could eat him!" A voice piped up from a foot or two away from Hannah, causing all eyes to turn and look. Emmi hovered next to Addy, small wings beating furiously, with an I'm-so-clever look on his face. Addy gave him a look as if he were crazy and silently flitted away from him. The look on his shortly vanished as everyone simply stared at him with eyebrows raised, his head lowering a little and his voice coming out in a soft mumble, "Well... I saw on this TV show one time people eat snakes..."

"I don't think anyone would be able to find his parents," Rhia said, turning her attention back to the child in her arms and deciding it best to simply ignore the cherub. She had slipped her hand back into her bag and had rummaged through it, all the way to the bottom, and still found no sign of the icicle-shaped sliver. Having already gone through a mushroom turning into a small fairy, a mask turning into a samurai boy, a box turning into a small boy with a tail and wings, seeds that turned into creatures resembling dogs with plants on their backs, and the gods only knew what else, it would not have surprised her in the least to find that the shard had turned into this boy that now sat in her arms.

As she looked down at him, she realized that the last (and very likely the only) image she had really looked at in the shard was that of the King Cobra in the middle of swallowing its dinner... which had been a white bird of some kind. She thought the shard had glowed softly after that, and now she was sure it had. The boy had pale green skin, mottled with patches of smooth scales here and there, and the tail and hood couldn't be mistaken for anything other than a Cobra's. The white wings tinged with red though, that was interesting, but the bird had been in the reflection just as the snake was, so maybe...

"I think... we should just go home now." She said after a moment of silence, glancing up from the boy in her arms to the two eldest Tahnee. Hannah and Zander exchanged another glance, and Rhia smiled. "I'll explain it on the way back, but I just don't think anyone could help the boy find his real parents."

If he has any. She thought again, but didn't think that needed to be said at the moment. She gestured with one hand for the others to go ahead of her before closing the flap of her bag and starting after them, her arm curving under the boy. She had no problem taking the child with her, even if her assumption had been wrong and his parents were back in the zoo somewhere looking for him this very moment. She had done countless things worse than inadvertently taking a child away from its parents. But she wouldn't foster him, she couldn't, not with her own child's arrival so near. It would be hard enough for her to take care of her own baby, she didn't need another kid to add to that, toddler or not. Maybe at one time, but not now, not with everything she had been through, she just couldn't.

As she stepped through the gate, she glanced down into his golden eyes and her breath hitched in her throat, his eyes very familiar to the eyes of someone she had once know, painfully familiar. She realized that his eyes alone, slit and golden as they were, might be enough for her to refuse to take care of him. She averted her gaze quickly, even with the round, innocent face surrounding the eyes, they were just too much for her to bear gazing into. She couldn't, and she didn't want to, did she? Gods, she knew right then that every damn time she looked at the child she would be reminded of him, and that right there caused her to find the idea of raising the boy slightly troublesome. Aside from the child she now carried safe within, she wanted to rid her life of every single thing that reminded her of what she had once had and how it was so brutally and heartlessly ripped from her possession. And the boy's eyes... they were so familiar, so much like his eyes, she didn't think she would ever be able to look the reptilian child in the face without remembering, without hurting. But she didn't have to, did she? As soon as she got home she would find someone to take the boy, she would not raise him...

Events took place on July 11th.

"Get out of my sight."
"But you never gave me a chance, my Lord! I can do this!"
"The only thing you can do is spread your legs for the entire realm, filthy whore that you are."

Night leisurely descended on the large house, the tall redwoods that surrounded it casting long, black shadows across its surface. The darkness was slowly creeping into the rooms, chasing away the light and sucking the color away until it seemed to be a myriad of blues, greys and blacks. The sky was cloudless, the stars that sparked to life crisp against the darkness and easily seen to those who were out wandering, or those who sat beside a window and gazed out into the growing gloom.

"If anyone had had the chance to make it right, it was you. You could have had it all, you could have changed everything... why didn't you?"
"Maybe I like it this way."
"Decimated? But there's nothing left here, everything is destroyed and dead!"
"Exactly."

The square, double-paned window on the second floor stood open slightly, the cool evening air wafting in when the small breeze ventured to make itself known. Long, slender fingers twitched in the darkness, casting off the ashes that had gathered at the end of a cigarette and sending them swirling into the wind before it died and sent them seesawing to the carpeted floor. Glittering, crimson eyes sparked behind thick, black lenses, their depths always brimming with hate, cruelty, pain. Dark lips closed around the end and the single ring in the lower one glittered in the soft, orange glow. Their corners twitched into a rather cruel smirk as the cigarette was pulled away; smoke seeping from in between them, twisting and whipping about in the breeze before displacing into oblivion.

How many times had she sat here, thinking of things that had taken place so many lifetimes ago? Did it even matter now? So much of it was lost over the ages, what drove her then, what emotions she felt... it was like milk diluted with water; thin, translucent, only a shell of its former self. So tasteless no one would ever savor it again, so empty few would even allow themselves a tiny sip. Time was a cruel thing, fate - if there was such a thing - unforgiving in its duty. She wondered for a brief moment, that even if she was able to recall everything - the sounds, the sights, the sensations and emotions - if it would really mean anything after all these years; if it would change anything. She didn't think so, too much time had passed by, too many things had happened. Even if she were to be somehow whisked away and dropped cruelly back in those days, it would all be pointless...

It's a death row pardon, two minutes too late.

That one line from a song caused Rhiannon to chuckle softly, smoke snaking out of her mouth and nostrils as her free hand glided over her stomach; the other tapping the end of the nearly spent cigarette and casting more ashes into the light wind that wound itself in through the window. Sighing softly, out of pure aggravation, she braced her hand against the arm of the chair and hoisted herself into a standing position; a grimace passing over her face. As had become her custom over the past five months, her body tensed ever so slightly as she awaited the oncoming agony that would sometimes (and sometimes not) grip her midsection as she moved from standing to sitting to laying or any combination of those three. Luckily, however, it seemed the baby that was nestled safe within her was giving her a little break, for the pain never came as she straightened and then arched her back a little.

She took one final drag on the expended cigarette and snuffed it out into the small, crystal ashtray that sat upon the window. Reaching over, she was just about to pull the window shut and latch it when a loud knocking echoed in her ears. Crimson eyes swinging towards the closed door, she brushed her bangs away from her face and debated not responding for a moment. Whoever it was, she was sure they could deal with it on their own, or go wake up someone else; they didn't need to bother her. What caused her to rethink was the soft whining she heard coming from the other side of the door; soft enough that it was barely heard, even by one who had extremely sensitive ears as the demoness did.

She realized at the moment she wanted very much to light another cigarette.

Closing her eyes for a moment she raised her hand and pressed her thumb and forefinger to the bridge of her nose, lightly pinching the skin before making her way over to the door in the darkened room. She made a detour to the dresser first, plucking her sunglasses off the top and slipping them on before proceeding to the door. Holding back a sigh, she grasped the doorknob and turned it, swinging the door inward to reveal a weary looking Hannah with a very upset child in her arms.

Tired as she was, she was able to give Rhia a rather acidic glare; rounded ears perking forward and tail bristling. "How could you leave him with us? We don't know anything about babies!"

"I thought you said he wasn't a baby the other day," Rhia replied casually, turning her back to them and walking back over to the window. She slowly sat down in the chair again, hand cradling her large stomach, and pulled a pack of cigarettes from her pocket. She slapped it against her palm and wrapped her lips around one of them, pulling it from the pack and producing a lighter from the same pocket.

Hannah, slightly aghast at what Rhia had just done, stepped into the room and gently rocked the winged, serpentine child, who continued to mewl softly in her arms; tears brimming in his golden eyes. The tigress bit back a growl and tried to be as civil as she could, "Rhia..."

"Yes?" She mumbled around the cigarette, the end already lit as she slipped the pack and the lighter back into her pocket. She took a drag from it and then plucked it from her mouth, turning to gaze over at Hannah with raised eyebrows.

"I can't believe you!" Hannah said angrily, trying to keep her voice from rising to a shout. "You brought him home, and ever since he's been here you haven't so much as smiled at him. He's a child, Rhia, a child without a family or a home!"

"What the ******** do you want me to do, Hannah?" Rhia shouted back at her, seeming to have no issue when it came to raising her voice. She stood up in one, fluid motion, proving that even in her late pregnancy she could still move faster than most. The cigarette that had been smoldering between her lips now sat in the ashtray, her hands resting at her sides with fingers splayed limply. "He's not mine, I have enough problems as it is. I don't need some godsforsaken kid falling into my lap every ******** month!"

Hannah simply stood just inside the doorway, literally dumbfounded at the demoness' reaction. The boy in her arms had fallen silent, glittering eyes wide with uncertainty and fear as he gazed at the redhead. For a moment the tigress really had nothing to say, so appalled that Rhia would actually say something like this... not care like this...

"You brought him here, and you expect to be able to just drop the burden on someone else?" She said quietly, not able to keep the contempt from her voice. "You said yourself that he had no home, no family... you bring him here, give him food and shelter, give him a place to live and people to love... you gave him everything, and now you simply assume that we will take care of him? We, who are nothing more than children ourselves?"

Rhia chuckled darkly and picked up the cigarette, the sound gritty and cruel. She took a long drag from it and blew the smoke out through her mouth before turning to look out the window. Yes, she could do that, and yes, perhaps that was she assumed would happen. She truly believed she'd have her hands full when her own child was finally born, she didn't need another damned kid entwining itself in her legs and tripping her up just as she was trying to get back on the path. But Hannah was right, she had brought him along, this was her house, he was now her responsibility, as much as she hated to admit it.

If only those ******** eyes of his...

"Give him to me," She said softly, snuffing out the half-spent cigarette and turning to gaze levelly at Hannah, keeping the sigh of resignation from bursting forth. At first the young woman seemed reluctant to hand the toddler over, as she always was when it came to handing over certain things to the demoness. It would only take a second for something to happen, something that couldn't be taken back...

Slowly, almost like it was causing her physical pain, Hannah walked over to where Rhia stood and gently held the child out to her. The cobra-like hood on the child's head and neck flared outwards for a moment, impossibly large, slitted eyes only widening further. He seemed, however, to get over the initial fear extremely fast, as a moment later he produced a grin full of fangs and stretched his arms out towards the winged woman.

Perhaps the child sensed something that Rhia herself could not...

This thought caused the demoness to make a soft 'tch' sound as she reached for the boy, carefully hoisting him up from Hannah and propping him on her hip. She stared into his golden eyes for a long, silent moment; her own eyes hidden behind the dark shades. Hannah, observing this, thought she noted a shadow of something pass across Rhia's face, but couldn't be sure with the lighting the way it was; the impression was gone just as fast as - she thought - it had appeared.

Once the child was cradled safely in Rhia's slightly muscular arms, Hannah was still reluctant to leave them. She had had every intention of coming here and demanding that Rhia take the boy, as she had tried everything she could think of to get him to calm down and nothing had worked, but now that she was here she wasn't sure if it was such a bright idea. After the way the demoness had just reacted, who really knew what she would do...

"You don't have to worry," She said, glancing over at Hannah and arching one slender brow, almost like she had read the girl's mind. "I promise not to eat him. Besides, you brought him to me in the first place."

Hannah offered a small, hesitant smile and a nervous laugh at that, realizing it was a joke but too exhausted to fully appreciate it in the current situation. She took a step back, finding herself in the upstairs hall just outside the doorway, and she gently brushed her scarlet-tipped bangs out from in front of her eyes, "If you can't calm him down... come get me, alright?"

"I'll calm him down. One way or the other." Rhia gave an innocent smile and then quickly waved her hand in a dismissive gesture as the tigress tensed and looked as if to come back into the room. "I was kidding, Hannah. Lighten up, will you? And get some sleep, your ears and tail are losing their glossy luster."

Hannah's ears folded back a little and she produced a genuine, albeit weary, smile. "I mean it though, if he won't go to sleep come get me. Please."

"I will, though he seems to be calm enough already." Rhia looked down at the child, who tilted his head and looked up at her, his thick tail curling and uncurling. The tears still glistened in his eyes, though they were slowly drying up as he gazed curiously up at the demoness, his gaze not without a hint of awe. She glanced from the boy to the Tahnee and gave a slight nod in the direction of the stairs, "Goodnight, Hannah."

"...Goodnight." She gave the child a fanged smile and then pulled the door partway closed before heading quietly towards the staircase, her exhaustion sinking in more than ever.

Rhia stood for a moment, staring blankly at the closed door, her eyes shifting from a pinkish-orange to a golden-orange. The boy in her hands looked at the door, a frown appearing on his scale-mottled face, before he looked back at the woman who held him; red and white wings rustling softly. "Nani?"

She blinked, dropping her head slightly to look down at the snake-like boy, noting that this was the first time he had ever "spoken" to her before. The corners of her dark lips twitched into a smile and she turned away from the door, heading back over to the chair and the window it sat in front of. "What do you want, hmm? It's past your bedtime, I'm sure, what do you need to go to sleep, you little nuisance?"

The child looked up at her, eyes shining with the remainder of the tears that had filled them moments before, and seemed to find what she was saying very interesting, for his lips parted and he stuck the tip of his finger between them; silent and seeming to be waiting for her to speak again. Her smooth brow creased for a moment as she carefully lowered herself and the boy down into the chair, a loud sigh escaping her. "You don't look tired... gods, I suppose I forgot what it took to be a parent. Guess I'll have to relearn everything pretty quickly."

She shifted his position slightly so he was sitting on her lap, her resting against her bosom and face turned towards the window. She loosely wrapped her arms around him, left hand grasping right wrist, and rested her cheek against the crown of his smooth, cool head. "Maybe I'm not cut out to be a mother anymore, maybe this was a mistake." She wasn't talking about the cobra child in her arms, rather, she was talking about the child inside of her, still awaiting its first breath. "Maybe Sparky was wrong, this isn't the way it's supposed to be..."

"Maman." He said, in a matter-of-fact voice that made Rhia tense and her eyes widen slightly. It was baby talk, she knew it was, senseless burbles that spilled forth from an underdeveloped mouth, but still... it gave her a little chill to how much it resembled the Lina'kova word for Mother. She closed her eyes halfway and made a soft 'hmph' sound, releasing her wrist and bringing her left hand up to gently stroke the side of the child's head.

"Maybe you're smarter than I give you credit for, but you're not that smart." Without even realizing it, she gently started to rock back and forth in the chair, her bi-colored wings opening and swinging forward to drape across the boy and her legs. His smaller wings rustled underneath hers, spreading out and going limp, his tail curling tightly before falling still. He lifted his head a little, mouth gaping open in a huge, audible yawn. The demoness raised both eyebrows at the sight of his long, needle-like fangs and placed her cheek against his head when he settled back down, "That's one hell of a set of teeth you got there, promise me you'll bite someone someday, alright? Really give them a nice chomp."

He snuggled closer to her, mumbled something as he gazed sleepily out into the night, and she smiled. Again, without even consciously making a decision, she found herself softly singing a song that she had once sung to her other two children, the two she had lost. Her voice was rich and velvety, but here and there - when the tune called for it - it became light and breathy, a slight trill being sounded. She had never sung professionally, in fact, she had never sung for anyone other than those that were now gone, but her voice was exquisite just the same. Something most would probably want to hear, and most would think it a shame that she kept it to herself.

"Na'k ne'tina he na'k je'na
Ol, naka d'eva ra'la a'na pe'yoi
Na'k ne'tina he na'k je'na.
"

The words came easily to her, even though it had been nearly sixteen years since she had last sung them. She would never forget the song, the lyrics and the tune were a part of her just as much as the child that sat, safe and warm, inside of her was.

"Ol, naka ju'je mel be'la d'eva teni
Ven'tina ne'tina he na'k je'na
Naka ary a'tania mel be'la d'eva teni.
"

She raised her head slowly, tilting it to get a better view of the child she held and noticed that he had fallen asleep, his pale lips curved into a soft, innocent smile. She found herself responding to the smile in a way that surprised her and made her a little angry. Eyes a swirling honey color, she blinked against the sheen of tears that made themselves known yet seemed content to not fall.

"Ne'nasa ra'la de'nan v'an pe'yoi
Mel na'k ne'tina he na'k je'na
Ary meta'wa te'fen mel be'la de'va teni.
"

In a few moments she would get up and put him down, most likely in her own bed for tonight, but for now she simply sat in the chair, lightly rocking and singing softly to the slumbering child. She too needed rest, she suddenly felt exceedingly weary and empty, but for right now she was content enough.

Right now she just needed to hold someone.

Events took place on July 15th.

"Hannah-"

"I've got it."

"Hannah."

"Stop worrying!"

"Hannah, for the gods' sake, take him and let me ******** do that!"

Rhiannon grabbed the teenager tigress by her shoulder and pulled her away from the large range that sat in the kitchen of the demoness's home, turning her around and holding the him she spoke of out to the Tahnee. "Take him, I'll finish breakfast."

"I'm doing fine, and you should be resting." Hannah replied, her blue eyes flicking up to Rhia's before glancing back down at the pots and pans on the stovetop.

"I'm pregnant, Hannah, not disabled. Why the hell does everyone think being pregnant makes you incapable of doing anything?" The redhead spat, clearly angry.

"Maybe because your baby is due soon and you've been pushing yourself a lot lately, not to mention you probably have a high stress level." Hannah reasoned, grabbing a strip of bacon with a pair of tongs and turning it over in the pan. "We're just worried, if you'd take it easy maybe we wouldn't seem so pushy."

The blonde took the pan of bacon and slid the still sizzling pieces onto a plate near the stove before setting the pan back down. Picking up the plate (which was stacked incredibly high with the cooked strips of meat), she whirled and set the plate onto the cluttered table.

Bacon, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, waffles, corned beef hash, toast, French toast and eggs; hard and soft boiled, scrambled, over easy, sunny side up and poached. There were also omelets with various ingredients ranging from sausage, ham and bacon to pepperoni, hamburger and even Spam. There were also basic cheese and ham omelets and even some fixed vegetarian style. Amongst other things, a couple jars of jelly and peanut butter sat amidst the mountains of seemingly endless food, and even more food was littered about the table; fresh fruit, cereal and an abundance of condiments in the form of syrup, butter, salt, pepper and catsup. As with the food the drinks were in variety as well, milk, orange juice, apple juice, water, fruit punch, and a few smoothies. And of course, not forgotten were plates, cups and utensils - all plastic - and stacks upon stacks of napkins.

All in all, it looked like a breakfast for a few dozen people.

"Oh please, I made just about all the food before you ever got out of bed, I can finish that last damn bit of it as well." Rhia arched her brows and inclined her head towards the winged child she held, tussled bangs falling across her smooth forehead. "Just take him and let me do that. You want to help? Try to keep everyone in order so they don't stampede my house into the ******** ground."

Hannah sighed and glanced down at Rhia's protruding stomach, covered with a thin black t-shirt. "Just take it easy, please? I doubt that an unborn child can withstand all that you can, it being yours doesn't make it exempt from harm."

"Yeah, yeah. Try not to remind me that this forty extra pounds I've gained will soon be a screaming shitbox." Rhia gave the blonde a tight-lipped smile, knowing full well that the girl wouldn't realize forty pounds for only one child was extremely unusual. She stepped in front of the range once Hannah had taken the boy, picking up the spatula and flipping the last of the eggs, pancakes and sausage patties. "Just try to keep out of the way."

A moment later the winged woman slid the last edible items onto their respective plates and platters and turned the gas-powered stove off. She sighed and turned to Hannah, slender fingers brushing her bangs away from her face before flipping her long braid over her shoulder.

"Now we just stand back and wait for the kids to come down." She linked her hands together under her stomach and leaned back against the counter, fangs glinting in the early morning sun that filtered through the window as she smiled.

Hannah gently swayed back and forth, bright blue eyes catching the child's golden ones and giving him a grin. He merely stared back at her, eyes wide and rather emotionless. He hadn't been very responsive lately, and though Rhia didn't seem to care too much, Hannah was a little worried. Rhia had made some good points, he was part snake and snakes were normally solitary animals, silent predators that sat back and assessed things, waited for their prey to come to them before striking; agitated easily. But he was almost a baby, and babies shouldn't be so... so... seemingly cold and indifferent to everything.

She sighed softly and gently ran her hand over his smooth head, fingers playing across the edge of his relaxed hood. She had never actually been home and had breakfast when most of Rhia's other "kids" were, but apparently the heavily pregnant demoness expected most - if not all - of them to come down at once.

No wonder she had such a huge house, let alone a big kitchen.

"Mornin', 'Annah." Came a smooth voice from the kitchen archway. Startled, the tigress whirled around to find Mejis coming into the kitchen. She smiled and allowed the Medusa to take the boy from her; the child's wings opening and his tail curling in the air as he reached for his blindfolded housemate. Since coming home from the zoo, Rhia had introduced the child to most of the members of the house, yet the boy seemed to have developed a stronger bond with Mejis than with anyone else, save for Rhia herself. Perhaps because they both had serpentine characteristics.

"Good morning, Mejis. You're up early." Rhia unlinked her hands and crossed her arms under her breasts, her teal-haired friend slithering up to her and placing a feather soft kiss on her scarred cheek.

"'Ello, luv'ly. I jis wan'ed t'see if ya needed anythin'." He used his free hand to brush a wavy strand of hair away from his eye patch like blindfold, fangs appearing as he gave the slightly shorter demoness a grin.

"Thanks, but I'm fine." She leaned over and let the boy in Mejis's arms grasp one of her fingers when she held out a hand to him. He gave her a small smile, revealing long, thin fangs of his own before proceeding to mumble a short string of sounds that created half-words. "In a minute the kids'll be down for breakfast. I'm just waiting to make sure certain ones don't try and kill others."

"It's really that bad?" Hannah asked, her pale brows arching below her crimson-tipped bangs.

"Probably not, depending on who all comes down. Hopefully everyone that's hungry normally eats solid food." She paused as the kitchen was filled with a soft, insistent beeping. Rhia and Mejis both tilted their heads back, faces pointed towards the ceiling. Hannah realized the beeping was coming from upstairs, some sort of alarm clock no doubt, and thought that if they could hear it down here it must be pretty loud up there.

"Ek'ast." The winged boy in Mejis's arm stated quietly, golden eyes flicking to Rhia for a moment before he glanced up at the ceiling along with the other three, tail lazily swaying.

Rhia sighed as there was a thump from somewhere above, followed shortly by the drumming of running footsteps, then a second thump. "Yeah, kid, breakfast."

A moment later someone shrieked and another laughed, and then the inevitable morning rush came. To Hannah it sounded like a few dozen horses were running back and forth, and she would have believed that's what it was if it weren't for the frequent shout that was obviously something in English. She glanced away from the ceiling for a moment and looked over to Rhia, then to the empty space of hallway beyond the archway. "How many are home again?"

Mejis laughed and gently bounced the serpentine child up and down once, eliciting a short cry of surprise from the boy and a flap of his small, two-tone wings. "Prob'ly 'bout twenty, give'r take."

"Not including any of the animals." Rhia added.

"No wonder you cook so much." The tigress mumbled, stepping over to Rhia and Mejis just as the first small wave of sleep-disheveled but alert household members shuffled into the kitchen.

Layla, Tayko and Zander filed into the room, the wolf siblings jostling one another as the other one cleaned his glasses on his pajama top. They issued good mornings to Mejis, Hannah, Rhia and the newest addition before turning to the table. Each one grabbed a plate and started sifting through the food; Zander being rather picky about what he placed on his plate as Layla and Tayko piled food onto theirs. They had no sooner started this when they were joined by others.

A small Fob with blue stripes by the name of Cocoa scurried into the kitchen, accompanied by two cat-like creatures; Mel and Cerce. The three small animals were twisting and winding themselves in and out of three pairs of legs, engaged in a game only they understood. The legs belonged to Kenshi, Necia and Tynan. The winged Fallen flitted his small wings and hovered just a few inches off the ground, circling the table and picking up things once he had gotten a plate. Necia was talking softly to Kenshi, who seemed a little uncomfortable, but was too polite to not listen to the Pekryht as she talked. Donny and Nina followed close behind the trio, the two girls laughing about something as Colleen and Sean trailed in after them. Acacia sauntered in with Reeka, a small fae-like creature with red markings and white wings sitting on the older Tahnee's shoulder.

Hannah watch as everyone wandered around the table and collected a drink and a plateful of food. She had never even seen all of Tahnee home at one time, it was a wonder they were all still talking and not shouting to be heard or screaming an argument at one another. The blonde glanced over to Mejis and Rhia, who were conversing softly with one another, the boy looking at them every once in awhile but mainly just staring more or less into space. Something the Medusa said caused the demoness to laugh and wrap her arms around her large stomach. This caused her to smile as well, round ears flicking absently. She knew it was seldom to see the redhead happy these days, let alone laugh; it was surprising just how much she missed seeing her guardian smile.

When she looked back over to the table she found that the number of people present has grown. Alex, Lu, Holly and Link had joined the group, Madison shuffling in silently with two small animals curled in her arms. One was Loccan, the small bird-like creature whose colorings resembled a tiger's; the other being Natasha, the small gerbil's coloring resembling Madison's, or more widely known, a fox.

The small Tahnee let out a sharp yelp, her eyes squeezing shut and shoulders hunching forward, as Lu nearly backed up into her and knocked her to the ground. He whirled around at the last second and smiled apologetically, placing a hand atop her head.

"Sorry, Maddy, I didn't see you there." He picked her up, along with the two animals she held, and set her on the countertop out of the way of traffic. He grabbed a second plate and turned back to her, "I'll get your breakfast. Wouldn't want you or your friends getting stepped on, right?"

Madison gave him a bright smile and nodded, tiny fangs flashing in her mouth. She bent her head a moment later and gently nuzzled the two animals she held, her pointed ears flattening against her raven hair and a soft cooing noise issuing from her.

"Guys, try to watch out for the little ones." Rhia said as she looked over towards the table, one brow arching above her sunglasses. Mejis leaned over and said something near Rhia's long ear and her gaze shifted from the children already in the kitchen to one that just entered. The demoness's dark lips tightened slightly, golden rings glittering, and she waved a hand to get the young woman's attention.

Deliah's slanted, crimson eyes turned to Rhia and she stopped just inside the kitchen's archway, expression solemn and disinterested. As Rhia stepped up to her, both of their postures stiffened visibly, though the taller woman's voice was pleasant enough. "Good morning, glad you could join us."

"I was tempted to wait until everyone was gone, or just go out to eat."

"Where's Gwydion?"

"Where's your man-whore?"

A brief flash of surprise flickered across the taller woman's face, but it was quickly replaced with barely restrained anger. A small part of her was glad that her eyes were painfully sensitive; the black lenses of the sunglasses masked the glint of pain that swirled to life in the depths of her orange-gold eyes. "You know that he left, I wouldn't know where he is now."

"And what makes you think I know where Gwydion is?" Deliah snapped, "He left as well."

"I know the relationship you two had with each other, you'd stay in touch unless there had been a fight."

"Maybe there was a fight." The Tahnee said, her voice smug and full of supremacy.

"I don't see any bruises, Deliah." Rhia cooed softly, her tones polar opposites from the young woman's. "We both know it's not a real fight without someone getting slapped around."

Deliah's eyes widened slightly and her lips drew thin, body trembling with rage at the insult Rhia had dangled in front of her face. She knew saying anything else would only add fuel to the fire, so she literally bit down on her tongue and turned away, heading off towards the others. But Rhia had other plans and swiftly shared them with the young woman as she grabbed Deliah's bicep, whirling her back around and squeezing until her long nails bit into the sleeve of the jacket.

"Don't ******** with me, Deliah." She hissed softly, voice dark and angry. A guttural tone rumbled in her voice as she spoke, her lips peeling back away from her fangs. "You don't know what he's capable of, and more importantly, you don't know what I'm capable of."

Deliah's crimson eyes widened again, this time in pain and fear, and her ears flattened against her hair; red-orange strands falling across her face. Rarely did anyone in the household see Rhia truly angry, but when they did it was even rarer they questioned anything she said, let alone back talk her. The Tahnee was saved from figuring out what to do, or any other misfortune the demoness might bring to her as a hand was placed onto the horned woman's shoulder. Her large, bi-colored wings jolted and her tail lashed in the air, but she released the girl and allowed her to duck her head and hurry across the kitchen.

"R'lax, luv'ly, she ain't dun nothin' wrong." Mejis tilted his head towards the demoness and smiled, giving her a pang of regret at not being able to look into his eyes. "Ye'should prob'ly go lie down fer awhile, y'know, t'calm down."

"I'm fine." She growled, shaking her head a little and sighing right afterwards. She smiled to the boy Mejis still held, already feeling her anger start to fade. The bad thing was nothing rose up to fill the emptiness the anger left behind. "I didn't mean to get angry with her, it's just lately it seems I've been wrong about everything."

"Now, now, Rhi, dun' be s'ard on yerself." The tip of Mejis's long, serpentine body curled up and around Rhia, lightly flicking against her shoulder. "Ye'jis need sum time, tha's all."

"Maybe you're right, I haven't been wrong about a lot of things, but a lot of things have gone wrong." She ran her fingertips over the tip of his tail, glancing up at him before smiling at the child he held, who in turn gave her a small smile of his own. "Thank you, Mejis."

"Anytime, darlin'." He bowed his head, wavy bangs falling in front of his blindfold that so resembled a pair of eye patches. "Shoul' be expectin' the two li'le ones soon, eh?"

"Yeah," Rhia leaned against the wall, gaze pointed toward the children that were now thinning out to go to various places and consume their breakfast. "That'll be fun, I can't believe they slept through the alarm clock again."

Mejis smiled and leaned against the wall beside her, "Aye, those two... whatta 'an'ful."

The child in Mejis's arms turned his slitted, golden eyes to the woman he had unconsciously dubbed his mother and smiled softly, aware enough to know who they were talking about and rather proud that he could voice this knowledge. "Emmy. Addy."

"Tha's right." Mejis laughed quietly, turning his head towards Rhia. "Y'know, ye'really shoul' think of'a name fer this guy."

"Nnn," Rhia grimaced, but affectionately rubbed the child's shoulder, causing his wings to twitch. "I'm no good with names."

"Oh?" Mejis chuckled softly and brought the tip of his tail up, lightly patting Rhia's huge stomach. "An' what's gunna 'appen t'this li'le guy, hmm?"

"You know I already have names picked out." Rhia said absently, gazing thoughtfully at the cobra-like boy and turning names over in her mind.

"A boy an'a girl?"

"Yes. 'Since you don't know the sex of you baby, you should have a name for each gender picked out'." She quoted Zarien, smirking. "Anyway, it's different, this baby is actually mine, not someone I adopted. I had to find the perfect names."

"Mhm, well, ev'ryone shoul' get the chance t'ave a perfect name, 'ey?" Mejis gently scooped the child up and held him out to Rhia, who gazed into his golden eyes and smiled. "Even 'im."

"I know, I'll really think about it." She lightly tapped the child's nose before Mejis settled the boy onto his hip again, getting a small grin from him.

"Y'do tha', but right now, we shoul' prob'ly get sumthin' t'eat in the peace 'n quiet b'fore Emmy and Addy show up." Mejis slid up to the table, inclining his head towards the food. "Shall we then, luv'ly?"

Rhia smiled again and pushed herself off the wall, coming to stand next to the Medusa and the child. "We shall."

"How about Draco, or Drakon?"

"Nah, ev'rybody uses those."

"Okay... Nagendra?"

"Issat a boy's name?"

"You could try helping instead of shooting down every name I think of."

"'E 'as t'ave the right name, Rhi, othawise... it jis won' fit."

"Well then, let's just name him Joe and call it finished."

"'Ey now, dun' get all upset on me 'ere."

Rhia sighed, leaning back in her chair and wrapping her arms around her stomach, the startings of a headache lurking just behind her eyes. She was tempted to massage her temples with her fingertips, but that would only make Mejis fuss over her, so she laced her fingers together under her stomach and bore the advancing pain with a straight face.

"I'm not upset," She said as patiently as she could, even though she was a little annoyed. "I've just been sitting here for the past fifteen minutes listing off name after name and you've said no to every damn one of them."

"Tha's cuz ya 'aven't picked the right name." Mejis grinned and brushed wavy, greenish hair away from his blindfold. He nodded towards the third and final occupant in the kitchen, who was busy playing with some wooden blocks on the floor near the kitchen table which they sat at. "If ya need time, g'head an' take it. A name's fer life, an' it shoul' be the right one, 'ey?"

Rhia sighed again and gazed down at the serpent child as he meticulously stacked block after block, creating a tower of sorts that was disturbingly neat for something a toddler's hands had brought to life. "No, he should have a name now. He's been without one for long enough. I just need a moment, after all, I've never been good with names."

The demoness raised a hand to stop Mejis's comment before he could voice it, a small grin spreading across her dark lips, "And before you go into how I picked out the names for my child, Zarien came up with the boy name."

"Ah, are ya serious?" Mejis chuckled and shook his head a little, tail curling underneath the table.

"No s**t, and though I came up with girl's name..." She shrugged slightly, brows arching and a rather guilty smile gracing her scarred face, "I kind of ripped off the name Zarien came up with. I never would have thought of Cheyna if he hadn't thought of Cheylan."

"Will won'ers ne'er cease." He gently brushed his knuckles across his chin. "How 'bout Que'z'lcoa'l?"

"Not only did you horribly mutilate that name with your accent," Rhia laughed. "But I somehow doubt that name would be fitting for him."

"Dun' it mean 'feathered snake'?"

"Yes, but Quetzalcoatl was a god in Aztec mythology, of the sky I believe. And he also created the human race."

"Ah, I see."

They were both silent for a few moments, Mejis contemplating things in his dark world, Rhia watching the child thoughtfully. It was hard to choose a name for him, she didn't know how old he was, where he came from... what he was even. Sure, he had the characteristics of a King Cobra, and he had the white wings tinged with red. She was almost positive his appearance had something to do with the snake in the exhibit at the zoo, but other than that, she was clueless.

Still, he bore the most resemblance to a snake...

"How about Ophiuchus?" She asked, turning her attention back to the Medusa for a moment.

"Oh-wha'-us?" He asked, brows arching in confsion.

"Ophiuchus. It's the name of one of the larger star constellations, around the equator I think, it's also the tenth sign in the Zodiac, though over time it was lost that there were originally thirteen Zodiac symbols, not twelve." She shrugged, wings stretching just slightly before nestling against her back once more. "It also means 'serpent bearer' in Greek."

Mejis sat silent for a moment, a little astounded that Rhia would know something like that about the Zodiac. Then again, she had been around for a hell of a long time. "Tha's qui'e a mouthful tho'."

"I assume he'll be given a nickname, as almost everyone is." She glanced over at him just in time to see his wings open up wide and a small smile flash across his face; the last block being set on top of the tower that was taller than he was. "Ophi sounds good."

"Well, 'e's yer kid." Mejis unconsciously mimicked her shrug, tail coiling around one of the legs of the chair she sat in. He rested his elbow on the table and propped his chin in his hand, smiling over at the winged woman. "Wha'ever ya decide, it'll be the perfec' name fer 'im."

"My kid. Right." She smiled a little and shook her head, wondering how the hell she got herself into taking on yet another member for her household. The smile faded for a moment and she lifted a hand, brushing her two-tone bangs away from her sunglasses. "Mejis, do you think it was a mistake?"

The Medusa frowned slightly at the smallness of her voice, the underlying tone of uncertainty. He leaned towards her a little, hand seeking out hers and entwining their fingers when he found it, "Wha's 'it'?"

"I decided to keep my baby," She said in that same, soft voice. "Was it a mistake to keep him as well? I mean, I found him yes, but that doesn't mean I have to keep him. When my baby comes I'll have my hands full and more, I just know I will. Being a demon and all, it won't be easy keeping tabs on and raising him or her, and if there are two little kids around here that need me..."

"Whoa, Rhi, whoa." Mejis gently squeezed her hand and shook his head. "Jis stop righ' there, a'right? Ya didn' take anythin' on tha' ya can' handle, I know it. The kid needed a place t'stay, ya gave it t'him, ya got a lot o' other people here willin' t'help. Dun' go beatin' yerself up o'er this now."

Rhia smiled, a trifle ruefully, and nodded her head a little. "You're right, I know you are. Ach, everyone around me seems to know what's going on and I'm still in the dark. But thank you, for staying with me, for not giving up... after what I did to you."

A pained expression crossed the Medusa's face at her words, but he quickly covered it up with a smile. "Dun' worry none, ya know I'd never leave ya. Bein' a rebound is better'n nothin', 'ey? 'Sides, I 'ad t'stay an' 'elp ya watch these new ones yer draggin' in. Ya bes' be careful now, ya keep sayin' things li'e yer sorry an' people'll star' thinkin' ya gone soft."

"I'll show them soft if that's what they think." She said, a smirk crossing her face. Again, the two were quiet, their attention directed towards the child that was studying his accomplishment intently, looking for any flaws or weaknesses that would perhaps lead to its destruction. The demoness tilted her head to the side and rested her temple against the heel of her palm, a smile touching the corners of her lips, "He sure is interesting, isn't he? A lot smarter than most kids his age."

"Aye, tha' 'e is."

"A big mystery in a little package," She gave him a bigger smile when he turned his golden eyes towards her, a hint of a smile appearing on his own, scale-mottled lips. "Hm, Ophi. I think it suits him perfectly."

Events took place on July 23rd.

Ophi's small, mossy green hands dug through the articles in the drawer; scaled, chubby fingers running over silk, cotton, suede, satin and leather. Most of the pieces of clothing he couldn't even make sense out of; with all their straps, strips of cloth and elastic, it was impossible for one so young to understand what exactly the exotic pieces were.

The only things the child recognized were a few t-shirts neatly folded and set in one corner. Two red, one black, one dark green and another black one, this one with a single word printed in bold, white letters across the chest. The boy had no clue what the letters S, L, U and T spelled, but the fact that this was the only top with writing on it caught his attention.

Taking the shirt out of the drawer and trying to keep it folded, the serpent child turned away from the dresser and shuffled towards the king-sized bed on the other side of the room. He stopped at the foot of the bed, holding the t-shirt out in front of him, almost like it were a holy item, and he turned his golden eyes up to the woman that was in the process of packing clothes into a large, black suitcase. As he held out the shirt, he pursed his lips as it half unfolded and nearly fell out of his hands completely.

"Thanks, hun," Rhia took the shirt and brushed one hand over the top of his head; fingertips outlining a few of the markings that adorned his hood. "But I doubt Sparky would appreciate me wearing this one, and I think it's a little small at the moment."

Ophi's gaze lowered from his mother's beautiful face to her enormous stomach, the boy contemplating this a moment before his mouth quirked to one side, "Too mall?"

"Yeah, kid, too small." She set the shirt aside and smiled down at her stomach, hands running over the fabric of the dress she was wearing. Lifting a hand, she pointed towards a chair in one corner of the room. "How about you bring me that coat over there?"

The boy turned and narrowed his eyes at the chair, back and seat strewn with shirts, pants and a single coat thrown on top of it all. He pointed at the olive colored trench coat and looked back at Rhia. "Dat?"

The demoness scarcely glanced up from the suitcase at his quiet inquiry, knowing there was only one coat out at the moment. She nodded her head, brushing her backs aside as they fell into her line of sight, and picked up a simple, black maternity dress from off the bed; slender hands folding it. "That's the one."

Ophi quietly walked over to the chair and grabbed a hold of the coat's sleeves. Pulling it from the chair, he tried to bunch it up enough so it didn't drag on the floor, but his small arms couldn't keep the long coat from doing so. He made a soft hiss of annoyance and his hood opened a little, wings fidgeting on his back and tail curling, as if the coat was doing this on purpose. Making sure the coat was at least pushed to the sides and not in front of his feet, he made his way back to the bed, only stepping on the belt once.

"Got da coa'." He said, holding it up to Rhia.

Having finally packed everything, she smashed the top of the suitcase down, latching it closed. She let out a loud sigh and rubbed her stomach with one hand, taking the coat from the child's outstretched hands, "Thank you."

"Welcome." He said, smiling slightly as the demoness dawned the coat; slipping her large wings through the slits in the back before putting her arms into the sleeves. "Ready go?"

"Yep, just about." She didn't bother buttoning up the front or tying the belt; it still fit, but only when worn open. She could have gotten a maternity coat that would accommodate her current physique, but she liked this one too much to pack it away until after the baby was born. "Hopefully I remembered everything. If not, I suppose I can always have someone bring whatever the hell it is to me."

"Yeah." Ophi agreed, taking her hand when she offered it and following at her side as she exited the bedroom and through the hall, descending the staircase. He stopped when Rhia stopped at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at her and refusing to let go of the tanned finger his fist was curled around.

"Mejis, you down here?" Rhia seemed to hesitate a moment before calling to the Medusa, but she stepped up the arch that led into the kitchen without the same anxiety. She stared a moment at Mejis' back, watching him cook something that smelled heavenly, before finally speaking again, "Mm, you should cook all my meals."

"Y'know I can' do tha'." He said flatly, still taking a moment to turn and face her even though he was blindfolded. "Then I'd hafta stick 'round 'ere more of'en."

Rhia smiled softly, feeling a small pang as he turned back around and busied himself with the large pot on the stove. It was a wonder he could cook without being able to see. She cleared her throat, breaking the silence that was a little uneasy for her and no doubt the same for him. "When you're done with that, would you mind helping me carry my bags out to the car?"

"Y'really gunna use tha' thing?" He asked skeptically, referring to the car, as he gently stirred the aromatic concoction.

"I have two suitcases and one rather large bag, I sure as hell am not going to carry them all to the Inn." She glanced down at Ophi, who stood patiently at her side, looking around the kitchen as she and Mejis spoke. "And I know what you're going to say, and I refuse to fly all that way with them too. I'm pregnant, I'm not going to let myself do anything that may be even remotely strenuous, I've had enough stress already."

"A'righ'." He said quietly, not wanting to argue with her at the moment, and making a point of showing her that fact by falling silent for a moment. He took a taste of the meal he was preparing before speaking again. "I'll get'ta it inna minu'e."

"Thank you." Rhia's mouth tightened a bit, silver rings sparkling, and she dropped her gaze for a moment. She liked Mejis, and she liked having him around, but this awkwardness between them was agony, and she was disgusted with herself for being the cause of this.

It was painful to realize he was another person she'd miss not having in her life.

Holding back a sigh that welled in her chest, she turned her thoughts from the Medusa to the child at her side, looking down at him. She was a little amazed at his tolerance, finding it hard to believe a child so young could sit and wait quietly for long periods of time as he could.

Feeling her eyes on him, he blinked and looked up at her, tail swaying as a small smile spread across his lips, "Hi."

"Hi." She chuckled softly, turning away from the kitchen. "What do you say we go find Hannah?"

"Okay." He gently rubbed one eye with the heel of his free hand and once again followed Rhia as she walked a few paces down the hall and poked her head into the living room.

"Hannah? You here?"

A pale hand, adorned with black stripes, appeared over the back of the sofa and waved a bit before disappearing again; the young woman stretched out across the cushions, enjoying a book. "All set to go?"

"I think so," Rhia stepped into the living room and motioned with her hand for Ophi to go to the tigress, and the child obediently released the horned woman's finger and took small, hurried steps over to Hannah.

"Hi." He said quietly, peeking over one arm of the couch at Hannah.

The Tahnee grinned and put her book down, leaning over and giving the boy an Eskimo kiss. "Hi yourself."

Slipping her hands under his arms, she hoisted him up onto the couch and turned so they were both peering over the back at Rhia. The demoness smiled and shook her head slightly, "You two, I swear. Alright, the Inn isn't that far from here, I can come back at any time, you know that. You have the number and all that s**t-"

"Rhia, remember what you said about swearing?" Hannah lifted her pale brows and nodded her head towards Ophi, who stood with his hands on the back of the couch; cheeks pressed against his knuckles.

"Right, right. It slipped out." She rubbed the knuckle of her thumb across her forehead, feeling a headache coming on. Again. "Anyway, you'll have Mejis, and Kenshi, and half a dozen other people that can help if you need a break from watching him."

"You'll only be gone a week or two, Rhia." Hannah smiled, "Go. Enjoy yourself, think of it as a mini vacation. You certainly deserve one."

"Right... Well, I guess that's it then." Rhia lingered in the doorway a moment longer, undecided, before closing the gap between her and the sofa. Placing her hands against her stomach, she leaned down a bit and placed a soft kiss on the top of Ophi's head. "You be good, I'll be back soon."

"Bye-bye, Mama." He said quietly, smiling up at her.

Again she paused, a little surprised to hear him say that, and she gave him a smile; placing her hand on top of his head for a moment. Giving both of them a small wave, she finally turned and headed out, "Bye Ophi, Hannah."

"Have fun!" Hannah called after her, looking over to Ophi and smiling. "We sure will, won't we?"

"Yeah."

Events took place on August 10th.

"You're not doing it right!"

"What do you know?"

"More than you!"

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah!"

"Well, I don't want to play with you anymore!"

"That goes double for me!"

"You can't say that!"

"Why not?"

"Because... because I said it first!"

"Well, I said it anyway!"

"Shouldn't we stop them?" Zander asked, watching the two cherubs scream at one another with faint concern etched across his features.

"Why? They always do this, and they'll quit eventually. Or lose their voices, whichever comes first." Hannah shrugged and glanced across the small clearing the quartet had come to for a picnic. It had been a few weeks since Rhia had left for the Inn, and in that time everything ran smoothly, with an occasional obstacle here or there, the main one being the fact that Ophi had basically stopped talking and seemed more content on his own than with anyone. This wasn't a problem, per say, but if he was still acting this way when Rhia returned the demoness would more than annoyed with Hannah.

Shielding her eyes from the bright glare of the sun, she spotted Ophi a few yards away, crouched down with his back to them. Giving Emmi and Addy an exasperated glance, she stood and headed in the serpent child's direction. She brushed off the seat of her pants and crouched down next to him, looking down at what he seemed so interested in.

There, in between the toes of his shoes, was a rather large, green caterpillar, its ribbed back laden with white stripes that started near its head and swept down its entire body. It was slowly making its way through the short grass, and when it got a few inches ahead of the boy's feet, he simply shuffled forward so it was in between his feet again.

"That's a caterpillar." Hannah said softly, catching his attention for only a moment. The boy seemed wholly absorbed in the tiny creature at his feet, which didn't seem all that strange to the tigress. He had never seen one before, so why wouldn't he be fascinated by it? "Just be careful with your new friend, okay? You're a lot bigger than he is and you can hurt him if you try to play with him."

"Hannah," Zander called, adjusting his glasses. "I think we should separate them before they pull one another's hair out."

Hannah put a hand on the top of Ophi's head to get his attention again, "Why don't we both go? We'll be heading home soon anyway."

Ophi's golden eyes stared blandly at the young woman for a moment before once again turning back down to the caterpillar; brow creasing as he stared at it. Hannah frowned, but decided to go break up Emmi and Addy before trying to coax him away from the bug again. Standing, she turned and walked back over to where Zander was trying his best to calm the little cherubs down.

Turning to watch her go, the child's eyes narrowed a bit as he turned back around to look at the caterpillar. He placed his hand on the ground in front of it, palm up, and waited patiently for the creature to crawl onto his mossy colored skin. When it had done so, he lifted his hand and drew it close to his face; studying the thing as it inched along his palm. When it got to the end of his hand, he simply touched his hands together and let it crawl onto the other one.

The whole scene would have been slightly amusing to some, had anyone been there to see it; every move the toddler made precise and slow, the exact opposite of how most toddlers normally moved.

Something about the caterpillar stirred and uneasy feeling in Ophi's stomach, and though he was too young to realize what the feeling was, he was old enough to realize that he didn't like the feeling. Hated it, in fact. He watched the thick, green body stretch out across his palm, slowly making its way towards his fingers, and he opened his hood; a soft hiss coming from his throat. Oh yes, he definitely didn't like the feeling or the caterpillar.

He wanted both to go away.

His eyes widened, slit pupils dilating a bit, and he closed his hand into a tight fist; a wet, squishing sound being heard as the caterpillar was crushed within. He watched for a moment as thick fluids oozed from between his fingers before opening his hand, surveying what was left of the poor insect with distant satisfaction.

No more caterpillar, and no more unpleasant feeling.

"Ophi, come on!"

He turned and squinted against the brilliant sun, catching sight of Hannah beckoning him. Leaning forward, he wiped his palm across the grass; ridding his hand of most of the lifeless, gooey mess before standing and walking over to the others.

"Ready to go?" Hannah asked as he looked up at her.

He nodded, curling his fingers around her index finger when she offered him her hand, his other hand absently rubbing against his pants. As they started walking, Emmi and Addy ahead with Zander, the tigress looked down and gave him a smile, "Did you say goodbye to your little caterpillar friend?"

Ophi's golden eyes flickered for a brief moment, then he grinned, "Yeah."

Alexei and Hannah with a baby in her arms wandered along the streets of Gambino, all three silent and eyes downcast. The toddler really had no idea why the older two were so preoccupied, but even as little as he was he didn't really feel like being... well, a toddler at that particular moment. His golden eyes flickered up to look into the tigress' face, catching her blue ones and raising his smooth brows in silent question. The gesture, so knowing and mature, was a mixture of both endearing and slightly unsettling to be seen on such a young face, but the young woman placed a hand on his head and smiled.

"It's okay, Ophi." She said softly, voice slightly hoarse and cracked around the edges. Her eyes, normally so vibrant and bright, were dulled at the moment, rimmed by a dark grey that stood out against her pale skin. All she could really do was hope and say it was okay, but she didn't really think telling the child what was happening would be a good idea. If he didn't understand (which most likely he wouldn't), she would be merely reminding herself (as if she needed reminding), and if he did understand... well, if he did understand she would rather he be saved from something like this if it could be helped.

She blinked and swung her head towards Alexei as he gently tugged on her sleeve, her crimson-tipped bangs falling in front of her gaze, but she didn't try to brush them aside. The deer boy was looking up at her with creased brows, his face fresher than hers, but if one looked closely enough they would be able to see that he too had been worrying. "We've been walking for a long time now, don't you think Ophi will be getting cranky soon? We should stop in at a shop or something, let him run around."

Hannah's lips twitched in a half-smile and heaved a weary sigh, but nodded her head. Tilting her neck back a little she slowed down and closed her eyes for a moment, her rounded ears flattening against her skull and her thick tail swaying. She felt slightly guilty at leaving the others at home (even though Layla and Tayko mentioned they might catch up later), but when they found out it wouldn't help any of them to be dragged out somewhere they didn't want to go. Besides, Kenshi and Zander were much better at offering comfort and reassurance than she was, and Alexei was even worse at it. Not that he didn't like to give it, he was just really... awkward when it came to showing affection. She just had needed to leave, she didn't mind giving comfort if she could, but she never could stand people trying to comfort her.

Ophiuchus' head turned up to look at her once again and he murmured a few sounds that were almost words to her, small, chubby hands grasping in the air. She smiled for him, finding it hard not to smile at something so small and innocent, and gently ran a hand along one side of his hood. The muscles flexed outwards at the attention, and the toddler cooed happily. She stopped abruptly and pointed to a shop that sat along the Gambino strip district, a place she had never really been before and so felt compelled to come. What better way than to take your mind off something than to immerse yourself in new surroundings?

"How about that one?" She asked Alexei, blue eyes narrowing slightly as she heard music coming from the building. "'The Benedict Center', maybe it's a store? We still need a few things back at the house for Ophi."

"Yeah, that's good." He replied absently, gently toying with a bright strand of blue hair. His small, puff of a tail twitched back and forth as he stepped up to the door and waited a moment for Hannah. She also stopped just before entering the house, looking across at the deer boy and giving him a smile.

"It'll be okay, Lex." She placed a hand on his shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze and he nodded. The trio stepped inside and glanced around, though Hannah's hand remained on Alexei's shoulder a bit longer and she had to raise her voice slightly to be heard above the music, "She's strong, and she wants this... she'll get through it."

"I know," He said softly before raising his own voice and repeating himself. Shrugging his shoulders lightly, the tone of his voice wasn't really one of belief, more like acceptance. "I just can't help worrying about her."

"I'm worried too," Hannah replied, cerulean eyes surveying the building they had walked into. Her pale brows knitted together lightly, tail brushing against her pants as it twitched and she switched the subject from their caretaker to the place they now stood on threshold of. "I don't think this is a store, it's like... a daycare or something. Maybe they just opened, it looks like they're having a party."

Alexei didn't reply at first, he was also looking around and taking everything in, green eyes wide. Neither he nor Hannah had ever been fond of large groups of people, but the boy more so than the young woman. He felt a familiar tightening in his gut and a sour taste in the back of his mouth. Having trouble swallowing was nothing new either, and he had even more trouble finding his voice when he leaned in closer to the tigress so he could be heard above the music and whispered, "Maybe... maybe we should leave, it does look like a party... I'm not really in the mood to celebrate."

Asrafel was currently busy trying to fish out the piece of paper that had Joce's name on it, when he spied more people coming in. Aw, they had missed the raffle! Oh well, at least they were here before the birthday girl! He didn't recognize any of them, but they looked amicable enough. He let out a little squeak when he found it, and pulled it out, handing it to Joce with a flourish.

"Here, you should keep this!" Who knows why, really. "I'll be right back, please don't leave.. okay?" He gave her a hopeful smile, before waving to her and Chuu and heading for the door. Now that he felt better, he would make sure to keep up his duties as greeter! Then he would go back to his new found friends.

He stopped before the group, his eyes immediately falling on Ophi. A knowing grin passed over his face, before he waved politely to them all. "Hi there, my name's Asrafel! Welcome to the Benedict Center. May I ask your names?"

Rhiannon Everwind
Alexei jerked away from Hannah and blinked rapidly at Asrafel, almost looking like... well, a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car. Hannah on the other hand, simply swung her body around and looked at Asrafel as he spoke, brows furrowing slightly as she focused on him. Finding it hard to turn her attention fully to the situation at hand made her tail bristle in annoyance, but the tigress managed to keep it from showing.

"Oh, uhm, hello, I'm Hannah, this is Alexei and the little one is Ophi." She managed a smile for the pink-haired stranger, finding it a little odd that he had no clothes on, but not enough so she would ask about it. After all, seeing a naked boy swathed in gaily colored ribbons was one of the least strange things she had seen since coming to stay with Rhia.

"You can just call me Lex if you'd like," Alexei said softly and after clearing his throat. He glanced around, still feeling a little jumpy at all the people, but at least he wasn't alone. He turned his attention back to Asrafel, seeming to not have the trouble Hannah did, and his head tilted just a touch. "What exactly is this place?"

Ophiuchus, throughout the whole brief exchange, had sat with his small, left hand clutching Hannah's shirt; wide, slit eyes gazing curiously over at Asrafel. The bi-colored feathers of his wings had puffed up a little and his tail had fallen still, lips gently closed around the index finger of his right hand. He glanced up at Hannah questioningly, but found that she was looking at the pink-haired boy, and so turned his golden gaze back in that direction as well.

Nio Love
Asrafel's eyes lingered on Ophi for a moment or two, continually returning to the boy. "Oh, how lovely!" He finally chirped out, after hearing their introductions. He reached up with an open palm facing upward for Ophi should he wish to take it, while looking up at Lex. "This is the Benedict Center, it's a Daycare for children much like Ophi here! I'm so glad you could come! What brought you here?"

Rhiannon Everwind
Ophiuchus blinked and at first leaned backwards a little, finger still in his mouth, and he placed his head against Hannah's shoulder; golden eyes fixed warily on the hand Asrafel had extended to him. After a moment of silent contemplation, the serpent child lifted his head and leaned forward; chubby hand coming away from his mouth and small fingers curling around Asrafel's index finger. He looked intently at this for a moment, his brow creasing in what seemed a very mature way for such a young child, and then his face suddenly brightened the way only a child's could. His smile revealed his long, slender fangs and his eyes glittered happily; wings flaring for a moment and tail swaying. "Ana?"

Both Hannah and Alexei smiled at this, then exchanged a quick and rather uneasy glance that conveyed everything without either one needed to say anything. The young woman turned back to Asrafel and shifted the toddler slightly so he wasn't leaning so far sideways to hold the boy's finger. "We were just out walking and heard the music. I was actually hoping this place was a store, we still need to pick up a few things for Ophi."

"What did you mean, 'children like Ophi'?" Alexei asked suddenly, causing Hannah to glance at him with raised brows. He felt her gaze and his cheeks tinged with color, but he awaited the answer to his question. He had surprised himself just as much as he had surprised her with his question, as he was never one to jump in on conversations, even if he had been the one who had asked about this place in the first place, he usually just quietly stepped aside.

Nio Love
Asrafel was a little too busy toying with Ophi's fingers when he reached out and took his index finger, to answer the question at first. In fact it would probably seem like the boy wasn't planning on answering the question at all, until he unexpectedly did.

"Oh, you know." He looked up at them and winked. "Special!"

If he could have gotten any vaguer, he would have.

"Are you hungry? Perhaps thirsty? Oh, you said you had to pick something up for Ophi here.. what was it? Maybe we have it! We are a daycare after all.. we have things that children usually need. What's that Ophi?" He looked down at the boy, who hadn't really spoken to him, though he acted like it. "You.. require.. candy? Well I hear there's a very pretty little purple mouse child making chocolate around here somewhere!"

Perhaps Asrafel was acting just a little more flighty than usual. One could chalk it up to the giddiness of finding Joce, and possibly becoming friends with her. Or, one could easily blame the chocolate.

After all, Asrafel had already eaten two pieces.

Rhiannon Everwind
Ophiuchus seemed to have forgotten about his siblings' forlorn mood and his partaking in it, Asrafel''s dark hand presenting too much of a distraction for the toddler to remember that he had entered here sad and confused. He let go of Hannah's shirt with his other hand and reached out with it, grasping Asrafel's pinky and spreading it away from the others. He moved his right hand from the pink-haired boy's index finger to his thumb, brows creasing as he concentrated intently on his work. His hood flared outwards for a moment, framing his head beautifully, before it relaxed and he looked up at the owner of his newly discovered toy. "Aaaana, nee ana?"

"He can have some chocolate, just not alot." Hannah gently raised a hand and placed it on Ophiuchus' head before looking from the child back to Asrafel. "We actually need guard rail for a bed, Rhia figured getting a crib would be a waste since he's already so big. I... think that was it."

"Rhia wasn't able to get a highchair in time, we need that too..." Alexei said quietly, glancing to Hannah before looking back to, what he supposed was, the host. "I'd like something to drink, if it's not too much of a bother."

Nio Love
Asrafel was enraptured by Ophi's reaction. It was simply adorable! He looked at the chocolate piece still left in his grasp, the only one he had managed to take before moving to greet the new guests. Ahh well, he was sure the lovely mousechild would grant him more if he wished, and it was always nice to share!

He lifted up the little piece of chocolate, and placed it in the palm of one of the hands separating his fingers. "There you go, Ophi!" After all, it was Joce (of all people) who had taught him just how sweet it was to share.

"Oh.." Asrafel breathed out as the two mentioned what they were looking for. "A guard rail.. I must admit we actually don't have one of those.. I'm sure we have a booster chair but it is for the Daycare, and I believe Miss Orestae would be upset should I give it away. However! I know where we bought it, and perhaps they have a guard rail as well! There is a store nearby, two blocks down, and to your left. I hope that helps!"

He giggled down at Ophi, leaning in and smiling gently. "I believe I will see you again soon, little one. Please, stop by anytime should you be in need of our services! Speaking of which.. I believe I will get you that drink! I hope soda will suffice.."

Asrafel was not about to go over and try to get a glass of beer, even if it wasn''t for himself. He headed to the drinks table and poured out a glass of soda, all too happy to be helpful. It was his position and situation that made him miss Elle's entrance, so that when he turned to walk back and handed the boy his drink, he felt quiet at the sudden realization that Elle had indeed come. What's more, in her arms was Shauna! His heart leapt to his throat, and he excused himself profusely from the group, wishing them well a thousand times over before padding toward Elle shyly.

If one paid attention to detail, one might notice his pink ribbons turning pinker in lieu of a blush.

Rhiannon Everwind
Ophiuchus blinked his golden eyes at Asrafel, clearly curious as to what the boy was doing. The serpentine child craned his neck out slightly as Asrafel's other hand came up and plopped something into on of his. Blinking again, he released the fingers he had been toying with and sat back, curling his small fingers around the piece of chocolate that had been placed in his palm. Turning his hand over so it wouldn't fall out, he slowly spread his fingers out and looked down at the candy. After a moment he let out a soft, exaggerated gasp, his small mouth becoming an 'O' shape that revealed his fangs, and he lifted his other hand and pointed at the item that sat in his hand.

He turned to look up at Hannah, and with her smile and nod of approval, he turned his attention back down to the chocolate, a cheerful grin spreading across his pale green face. He scrunched up his shoulders once and let out a soft giggle, nose crinkling as his finger gently poked the candy before he dipped his head and sniffed at it. His tongue, thinner than a human's and forked at the end, slipped out from between his lips and brushed through the air above the chocolate, getting extremely close but never actually touching. Though he picked up scents through his nose and not on the roof of his mouth, this seemed to be a habit of his and he did it with every new thing he acquired, food or no.

His slit eyes looked back up in time to see Asrafel hand Alexei a drink and not even stick around to hear the deer boy's mumbled gratitude. He hurried away to greet other guests, though the toddler being so little, he didn't yet understand that Asrafel had duties elsewhere. He let out a soft squeal of disapproval, fingers curling around the chocolate, and he leaned against Hannah''s shoulder; the upper half of his face peeking above it so he could watch the pink-haired boy leave. The child's lower lip jutted out in a pout and he raised one arm; his empty, chubby hand flapping up and down in a childish wave. "Mmm, buh-bye..."

Hannah smiled at this and gave him a hug, pressing her lips to his temple and giving him a quick peck. "Don't worry, Ophi, he had to go talk to the other people here. It's alright, just eat your chocolate, okay?"

Ophiuchus frowned and gazed after Asrafel for a moment longer, as if it wasn't alright, and perhaps in his small mind it wasn't, but as his fingers revealed the chocolate when they uncurled, he seemed to forget that Asrafel was no longer around. It hadn't melted at all in his grasp, his palm and hand cool to the touch, and after a moment's hesitation he opened his mouth and lightly slapped his hand to his face; the chocolate tumbling into his awaiting mouth. He frowned for a moment, running his tongue along the smooth surface of the chocolate, then he swallowed it whole and grinned broadly.

"Ophi!" Hannah laughed softly, though her eyes were regarding him warily.

"We should probably get him to stop doing that soon, I don't know if it's good for him to swallow things whole." Alexei said quietly, sipping his soda.

"I'm sure he'll stop soon, maybe it's just a phase or something. I really don't know all that much about kids." The tigress glanced around, pale, round ears swiveling on her head before she looked back at her brother. "You want to get out of here and go check out the store? We really should get him a booster seat if nothing else."

Alexei nodded and headed quickly and nimbly for the door before Hannah had any time to say anything else. Waiting a moment to see if she could catch Asrafel and thank him for pointing out the store, she noted there was quite a few other people (and babies) here and guessed he had his hands full. Besides, she wasn't really in the mood to socialize at the moment anyway, and it was obvious Alexei was feeling the same, more so than usual. She sighed softly and trailed after her brother, one hand coming up to hold Ophiuchus' in a comforting manner as he made a soft protesting sound, wings arching, at leaving the place where he had been gifted with his first piece of chocolate.

Events took place on August 20th.

Running the back of her hand across her brow to wipe away the sweat, Hannah rose from her kneeling position and tossed the gloves and sponge back into the bucket, not caring that a bit of soapy water splashed onto the dampened floor. How could she care about something so trivial now? After a few anxious weeks, a frightening phone call and a follow-up call that put everyone at ease, Rhia was finally coming home.

"Ophi?" Her blue eyes flickered about the kitchen, but the child was nowhere to be seen. Nudging the bucket across the clean floor, she stepped out into the hall and glanced around, still no sign of the winged boy.

She made a soft, exasperated noise, finding it more annoying than humorous that on the day the demoness was to come home the blonde should lose the toddler. According to Zarien when they spoke over the phone, Rhia was still exhausted and a bit depressed, even though it had been some time since she had awoken from the coma. She was going to have enough trouble with herself and the babies, she didn't need to be worrying about Ophi as well.

Hannah still couldn't believe it though; Rhia had had twins. A boy and a girl, according to what Zarien had briefly mentioned, it was a miracle Rhia was even alive after delivering them, let alone that she had survived giving birth to twins. Everyone had been expecting one child, it must have been quite a shock when Rhia had two.

As she stepped into the living room, she spotted Ophi immediately, sitting in the bay window. He was kneeling near the windowpane itself, small hands pressed against the cool glass. She walked over and sat down on the seat next to him, resting her weight on one arm as she leaned towards the glass to get his attention.

"Hey you." She smiled as he looked over, getting only a small twitch of his lips in return. She reached over and gently tapped his swaying tail with her fingertips. "What are you doing over here anyway? I thought you were supposed to be helping me clean up."

"No." He said softly, eyes still riveted outside. "No c'ean."

"Well, I'm done so I guess it does not matter." She pursed her lips a bit as she watched him, round ears perking forward, "Are you waiting for Rhia?"

"Yeah."

Hannah smiled, "Well, she should be home soon. In fact..." She glanced over her shoulder at the clock on the wall, "She should be home any time now."

"Yeah." He agreed again, softer this time.

"You're going to have a brother and sister from now on, more your age than anyone else in the house. I'm sure they will look like Rhia or Azruael, or a combination of both, that will make them almost as cute as you are." She paused for a moment, issuing a soft laugh and receiving a quizzical, sideways glance from the toddler. "I just realized I can't really picture a combination of the two, they looked a lot alike in the first place."

"So, this is what I come home to? You blathering on about my past relationships."

Halfway through Rhia's comment, both Hannah and Ophi whirled away from the bay window, startled that the redhead had snuck up on them. She was standing in the archway of the living room, a small smirk on her face and one brow arched, arms cradling to small bundles.

"Mama!" Ophi said, carefully sliding off the cushion and hurrying over to her. He assessed the two blankets she was holding for a moment, one black and one red, and he also pondered the fact that her stomach was taught and flat, muscles as defined as ever, no longer was it large and round. His questioning gaze didn't last long, however, and he wrapped his arms around her legs and hugged her tightly; wings curling forward as his dark tongue flicked out of his mouth.

"Guess I was missed." She said quietly, giving Ophi an affectionate smile.

"You were." Hannah came to stand in front of Rhia, barely able to contain her excitement and curiosity over the bundles. "We're all glad you and the twins are alright."

"You think I'd let something so trivial as the birth of my children kill me?" A slender brow quirked above her sunglasses. "Come now Hannah, I would hope you know me better than that."

Hannah smiled at Rhia's dismissive attitude, her round ears perking forward, "So, the blankets are...?"

"My children." Rhia confirmed with a smile. "They're sleeping now, I was just about to take them upstairs. That's why I made a silent entrance... well, one of the reasons anyway. I didn't want the horde to wake them up."

Ophi craned his neck curiously, fixing his golden eyes on the two blanket-swathed individuals his mother held. He seemed far less interested in them than Hannah did, but he was curious all the same; knowing these were the brother and sister the tigress had told him about.

"Rhia, this is so wonderful." Hannah said, blue eyes sparkling. "Is it alright if we see them?"

"Of course. You can gawk all you want when I put them down." The winged woman gave Hannah a questioning look, "Assuming the nursery wasn't demolished in my absence."

"No, of course not." Hannah took Ophi's hand and followed Rhia up the stairs to the second floor. The Tahnee couldn't help but be slightly amazed at how Rhia's figure now seemed totally unchanged by the pregnancy. Muscles toned, curves smooth and flawless, not a single sign she had ever been carrying were visible.

When they reached the room set up for the twins, Rhia let out a soft sigh and turned to look at Hannah, "Damn, it's good to be home. Would you like to put one of them down?"

"I would love to." Hannah smiled, letting Ophi go as she stepped forward and gently took one of the bundles from the demoness. She wasted no time in drawing back the blanket, revealing an infant much older than she had expected. A full head of fluffy crimson hair, streaked with gold, framed a dark, slumbering face. Nestled within the blankets she could see a few black feathers, and a hint of fangs could be seen in between the child's lips.

"Oh, Rhia." Hannah breathed softly, not wanting to disturb the twins. "He's absolutely gorgeous!"

"Damn right he's gorgeous, he's mine after all." Rhia smiled, a teasing note in her voice, yet it also held a good amount of warm, loving pride.

As she carefully placed her daughter into the crib, Hannah followed suit with her son, not being able to hold back the soft glee, "They're so perfect."

"They are." Rhia agreed, smiling as she gently ran her palm along both of the twins' foreheads. "Cheyna and Cheylan, my babies."

Hannah's bright gaze turned to Rhia and she smiled, glad to see the demoness so content and happy. It had been awhile, and it was good to see something wonderful come from all the hardship.

While Rhia and Hannah had been putting the twins down, Ophi had silently crept up to the side of the crib and grasped the wooden bars, looking in at the two new additions to the family. Once they were down, Hannah motioned for Ophi to let go of the crib and picked him up when he had done so.

"See, Ophi? These are your new siblings." She looked to Rhia for confirmation and the redhead smiled, giving a light nod. "Cheylan and Cheyna, your brother and sister."

Ophi's golden eyes flickered from on child to the other, intrigued. They both had horns and wings, both had tails curling out of their blankets. The boy's ears were differently than Rhia's, but the girl's were very close, just a bit shorter. He wondered what their eyes were like, but before he could try and wake them up, Hannah spoke.

"We should go now. We'll let you guys rest for a bit before we tell the others that you're back." She leaned forward and gave Rhia a kiss on her cheek. "Remember to take care of yourself too."

"Yes, mother." Rhia grinned, adjusting her sunglasses. She leaned down and gave Ophi a kiss on his head. "I promise, I'll spend time with you a bit later, okay?"

"Okay." He smiled at her, wings fluttering a few times.

"Did you miss me?"

"Yeah."

"Good. I missed you too." She gave him another kiss and straightened up, lightly running her hand across his hood before making a shooing gesture. Hannah stuck her tongue out, eliciting a quiet giggle from Ophi, and she turned and shuffled out of the room, the snake boy in her arms.

RP occurred on the evening of October 31st.

A group of five figures, one tall with a cigarette in hand, one in the middle and three short, walked leisurely down one of the streets in Gambino; each one dressed as differently as could be, except perhaps for two of the little ones.

"I can't believe you came with to go trick-or-treating." Hannah stated, fiddling with the pink strap of her costume. She was dressed up as a butterfly, costume colorful and wings even more so, though she was the only one in the group with fake wings. Unlike Rhia, who was - to put it very bluntly - an unheard version of a nun, one who seemed to be intent on committing every sin known to man (the demoness was literally all but falling out of the half-outfit she wore), Hannah's outfit was more modest than blatant whorish. She had flat-heeled sandals on, whereas the winged demoness at her side had on shoes with chunky heels that drew her height to just above six-foot-three.

"Well, I figured I had to since it's Chey's and Lin's first time." Rhia smiled down at the three children in front of them, each one carrying a plain, black bag that was nearly two-thirds of the way full. "Besides, I doubt you could handle them on your own."

"Candy!" Ophi stated quietly, stressing the Y at the end a little. He shook his bag, causing the candy inside to rustle loudly, and he smiled happily; unusually cheerful at the moment. Of course, who could blame him? He had gotten to dress up, decked out in an elaborate Cobra Commander costume, the villain from the TV show G.I. Joe whom he had taken a liking to, and he was now wandering around with four of his favorite people in the whole world getting - what else? - chocolate. It couldn't possibly get any better than this, as chocolate was one of the few things that could bring the child into high spirits.

They stepped up to a large house, the structure looking more like a villa, and found that the front door was propped open. The redhead perked her long ears, slender fingers coming up to brush her bangs away from her face, and thought she heard traces of music coming from somewhere. She stood a moment longer, emerald eyes flicking back and forth behind her sunglasses before she shrugged a little.

"Maybe we should ring the doorbell." Hannah pointed towards it, but Rhia simply snorted.

"If they don't want visitors they shouldn't leave their front door open." With that she stepped across the threshold, platform shoes thunking loudly and she ushered the three kids in past her with one large wing. "They're going to give us some ******** candy, or they'll be sorry I came to their house and they had none to offer my kids."

Hannah sighed, but Chey and Lin glanced at one another and grinned, their expressions rather wicked for children their age. Ophi glanced back at Rhia, wide, golden eyes questioning the irritated tone in his mother's voice. She put a hand on his shoulder and smiled, turning her attention to the other two children.

"Okay you two," Rhia leaned over so she could look her twins in their eyes, head tilting forward so they could see her own eyes over her sunglasses and through her two-tone hued bangs. She took the cigarette from her mouth and blew smoke upwards away from the three winged children, her piercings twinkling dully, "Remember to be nice and if anyone is rude to you, what are you going to do?"

"Tell you." Lin replied, and Chey nodded. The twins were dressed up in costumes that had probably been seen before many times, though the variations never seemed to end. The boy was dressed in red and black, his costume more suit-styled than simply pants and a shirt. One would have trouble figuring out what he was supposed to be on first glance, but with his natural spade-tipped tail, large black wings and slender black horns, along with the pitchfork he held in one hand, it was safe for people to guess that he was a devil. His twin, however, was dressed entirely in white. Her dress had sheer, bell-shaped sleeves and was sprinkled with iridescent glitter, the flecks of sparkling blue spreading out onto her tanned skin and into her crimson-and-gold striped hair. Again, her costume was an enigma were it not for the white headband she wore, a small wire curving up from the back to hold a golden halo above her horned head. She made a beautiful little angel, though said horns, her black wing (the other being white) and her black tail, spade-tipped just as her brother's was, were slightly out of place.

"Okay, good. I don't want a repeat of what happened last time." At this comment Lin gave Chey an accusing sideways look, the girl promptly scrunching up her nose and sneering at her brother. He was about to reach over and toy with the blonde's tiny horns when the small group halted simultaneously, reaching a room that was occupied by a good handful of people.

"Well, looks like we stepped into the middle of a party." Rhia commented, her sleek black tail twitching with curiosity as she surveyed the room; fingers tapping her cigarette and sending the ashes floating to the ground. "If there's no booze, we're outta here in three minutes."

Sukkubus
"I don't want to be here," was Joce's only soft complaint, pink lips pulled into a taut line across her face. She glared daggers at the woman who had brought her, looking both tremendously hurt and angry at the decision that had been made for her.

Sukkubus merely reached up with the paper fan clasped in one hand and rubbed an itch beneath her horn. The young girl had been fine up until now, what was the problem? Had she asked, she wouldn't be told...but damn, the she-devil hated being left in the dark. Her orange gaze flicked to Elliott, who had been persuaded to join her 'search party' on this little jaunt, eyes pleading.

"Well, Diego and Dante went off on their own, and Ritsu is off at the compound. You said yourself that you were getting tired and this was the closest place around." A faltering smile came to her lips, "'Sides, these kids still want candy."

She jabbed a clothed finger in Ruka's direction, who was currently blaring his horn into Emma and Nathaniel's ears. That's what happens when you allow a kid to be a satyr instead of something less noisy...like a mime.

Jocelyn lifted the kitchen knife she had taken to carrying around and waved it menacingly at Sukkubus; she painted a morbid picture of Alice, dressed in powder blue and a stained white apron - stained with the juice she had drunken earlier. Red. Well placed, no?

Walt was no doubt rolling in his grave.

"I'll look after her, Sukkubus. You go on," Elliott coaxed, smiling gently even as Jocelyn turned on her heel and marched into the building. She she-devil, however, hesitated.

"I dunno..."

"We'll be fine. Go get more candy, alright?"

He touched the back of her hand gently and turned himself, walking in after the angry young Shattered.

Of course, the faux nun he nearly ran into made him take several steps back, and he unconsciously repeated a holy prayer. He should have dressed out today...no one would really believe he was a priest. Not on Halloween.

"Ah...E-excuse me..."

Rhiannon Everwind
"There's more to life than just smoking, alcohol and sex, Rhia." Hannah commented softly, though she had a feeling the demoness was currently in one of her 'moods', so she wasn't surprised when she was merely laughed at. The tigress turned sideways so a blonde that stalked past didn't run into one of her wings, then took a few steps away from the door so she wasn't blocking traffic.

"That's because you haven't figured that part of life out yet, Hannah dear." Rhia placed her free hand on her waist and cocked her hip out to the side, the short skirt of her leather dress riding even higher up on her smooth, muscled thighs. Her wings fidgeted and she gave the man who had nearly run into her a disdainful glance, then did a double take as she noted he was dressed as a priest. She gazed down at him through her black lenses and tilted her horned head in a mock bow.

"No harm done, Father. You can run that cute little a** of yours into me anytime you like. Not to mention any other body part that's looking for some attention." She gave him a rather impious grin, displaying her large fangs, before taking a drag from her cigarette and turning her attention back to the area around her stocking clad legs... only to find that the three children had vanished. "Ah, s**t, where the hell did they go?"

'They' were on their way to the table that was lined with food and - what they all hoped - more candy. Chey and Lin remained side-by-side, their line of sight reaching just above the table itself as they proceeded to search through the contents and pick out things that looked good enough to eat right then or that they could store within their bulging sacks of candy for later. Ophi, however, drifted away from them to search on his own; the top of his hooded, scale-mottled head falling an inch or two short of the corner of the table.

This didn't seem daunting to the child, as he was rather tall for his age and he knew this, the table posed to be a small obstacle. But first things first, and this had been bothering him all night long. He set his bag of candy down in between his feet for a moment, small hands hooking under the mask he wore and yanking it from his head. Now that the mask was off, he expelled a loud burst of air and dropped it to the ground near his feet; palms scrubbing along his skin at the yucky feeling the latex had left behind.

Picking up the bag of candy and slipping both handles of it over one arm, he reached up with his free arm and felt around the tabletop with his fingers until they came into contact with a bowl. Stretching his arm out and rising to his tiptoes, he hooked his fingers on the edge of the bowl and tilted it towards him; golden eyes peering over the edge of the table to see the contents. He was hoping to see a pile of chocolate (he was partial to Tootsie Rolls and KitKats), or at the very least some sort of candy he could add to his bag along with the others.

Unfortunately for the serpent child, the bowl was filled with no such treats.

Ophi let out a loud hiss as ice cold punch sloshed over the edge of the bowl and into his face; expression contorting and eyes squeezing shut. He released the edge of the bowl and covered his eyes with his hand, the large hood that hugged his head shooting outwards in surprise. Slowly wiping the droplets from his skin, he licked his lips with his forked tongue and sucked in a huge, hitching breath of air, small wings quivering as he stared numbly at the tablecloth in front of him; slitted eyes wide and filling with tears against the stinging cold that now gripped his face. His bag of candy now lay forgotten at his feet, the opening tilted sideways and a few pieces spilling out onto the floor. The boy blinked a few times and a soft, distressed hum sounded in the back of his throat as he turned his wet face away from the table and found that he had wandered to a spot where he could see none of the people he had come here with, most importantly Mama.

Sukkubus
He had really meant to pass by without making anymore contact with the woman, but upon being addressed, he turned and gave her a quizzical stare. And blanched at her words, wishing more than ever that it had been he who had gone with Ruka and Sukkubus in his place; though he knew he was being very selfish. But what was he supposed to do? He'd never seen anyone wear less! Not counting the day he met Sukkubus, of course, but...that had been ages ago.

Was this why he became a priest? So he wouldn't have to deal with the peculiarities of the world?

He pasted a smile - albeit an awkward one - onto his face, "Ah, no miss. I'm not seeking any attention at the moment" - his eyes darted towards the others in the room - "But I am looking for a young girl who just entered..."

She didn't even want to be here! In a room full of people she barely knew and already disliked. She was doing a lot of that lately - disliking others. Being too judgmental. Or as Emma had put it 'crabby'. If she felt guilty for any one thing, it was leaving Father James back at the entrance. He had been kind to her, even if she herself had been rude.

Jocelyn heaved another sigh and thrust her blade under the tie of her apron, slinging the white rabbit backpack that held her candy onto her back. He'll be fine; he was grown, after all...

A quick movement caught her eye, and she turned her head sharply just in time to watch as Ophi's hood shot out. Her pale brows rose; what the hell was that kid? Curiosity grabbing hold the better of her - even though she had vowed to stay away from EVERYONE - she made her way over to the young boy and cocked her head, skipping over formalities and reaching a hand out to brush it over the top of his head.

It felt funny. Even with a glove on.

Rhia couldn't help but chuckle softly as the man's face drained of color, spade-tipped tail coiling in the air as she was slightly pleased with herself. She loved getting that kind of reaction from people, and now that she wasn't full of demon spawn (in the literal sense of the words), she could more easily pull it off.

It seemed that they both had their reasons for choosing the costumes that they had, albeit very different reasons.

"You mean the angry Alice?" She gave him the same grin as she flicked another layer of ashes from her nearly spent cigarette. "I wasn't paying attention, so I can't help you there. I need to go find my own kids before they maim someone though, so if you'll excuse me..." She nodded her head in his direction once more before turning to Hannah, pulling her huge wings in towards her half-naked body as best she could. "Stick around here, if you see any of them for the love of the gods don't let them go! Just wait here for me to come back."

Hannah nodded and rocked back on her heels, rounded ears swiveling back and forth as Rhia sauntered off, curvy hips sashaying as she went. The tigress didn't seem too worried about the children getting into trouble, even if they were known for it, they had only been gone... what? Five minutes at the most, what kind of trouble could they possibly get into in that short amount of time? She gave the man Rhia had exchanged words with a small smile before returning to scanning the room for the children.

Ophi had inched towards the end of the table in his searching for something sweet, thus he was out of Rhia's immediate line of sight. He watched with golden, cat-like eyes as a young girl walked up to him and proceeded to brush her hand across the top of his head. His hood relaxed and smoothed back out along the sides of his head and neck, and his tail swayed curiously, small hands rubbing against the fabric of his collar that was wet from the punch.

He could vaguely recall people telling him not to talk to strangers, and he realized that they didn't even need to tell him not to; he didn't want to in the first place. He smacked his lips together softly, traces of the sugary beverage still being tasted, and he slowly ducked his head away from her hand and picked up his bag of candy. Casting a sideways glance towards the table, he remembered why he was here in the first place and slowly, his love for candy outweighed his uneasiness. He had no more chocolate left in his bag, and though any candy would do, he really did prefer chocolate over everything else.

Smooth brow furrowing slightly, he looked up at the blonde girl for a moment, small hand coming up to grasp the edge of the table so he could balance on his tiptoes. He looked over at the bowls and plates, then back up at the girl before speaking very softly, "No doh-doht?"

Sukkubus
Angry Alice? Oh, yes!

Elliot nodded, thought whatever flicker of hope he felt was dashed when she said she didn't know. Suppose he lost her now? Jocelyn had already said she hadn't wanted to be here, and though he met her just today, he knew she was a clever girl. Suppose she somehow managed to slip past him again and got outside? It was Halloween...all the strange ones came out on Halloween.

The priest lifted a hand and pushed up his glasses, fingers squeezing the bridge of his nose.

He briefly watched Rhiannon as she left, before turning to Hannah and smiling kindly, "Well, if you'll please excuse me...I have an Alice to recapture." He nodded towards her and turned, heading farther into the room. The white rabbit in search of Alice for the Queen of Hearts. He smiled inwardly. Thank God Sukkubus didn't have a penchant for beheadings.

When Jocelyn pulled her hand back, her white glove was somewhat damp. She pealed it off and stuck it into her dress, patting the front flat once it fell. The platinum haired girl continued to watch him even as he drifted away, eyes unblinking.

The child looked like a snake. A cobra, hood and all. What she had first thought to be a costume was no doubt what he really was. Should she have been surprised? After all, she had been around catgirls, dogboys, devils, the works...what's one green kid?

Still...a snake.

Snakes were associated with bad things. There had been a snake in the garden of Eden, hadn't there? She had been reading too much, reading a book her guardian didn't want her to read. Yeah, Jocelyn had taken to reading her journal. Or rather, the Bible.

She broke away from her reverie at the sound of the child's voice, and purposely moved closer, head craning downwards to catch the end of his words.

"Dodote?" she questioned; she didn't have a degree in baby talk, after all. She leaned over the table herself and looked into all the bowls, noting all the candy they contained. She was quite the fan of chocolate herself, and glancing down at Ophi, she figured only one thing.

He was on the quest for candy!

She might as well help him, she had nothing else to do.

She played inny minny with the bowls before picking up the one with the most candy and kneeling down. Using her feet, she propelled herself past the tablecloth and disappeared beneath the table itself. After a second, she poked her head out and beckoned the child with a disarming smile.

"C'mon. We can share this, 'kay? I'll split the chocolate. That's my favorite."

Rhiannon Everwind
"What about this?"

"No."

"I don't want it either... what about this?"

"You can have it if you want."

"Well, it's gross! How about... this one?"

"I want that."

"What!?" Chey's slitted eyes flashed angrily in her pretty face, tri-colored bangs arching away from her forehead as part of an elaborate hairstyle. "You can't have this, it's mine! I gave you those other ones."

Lin narrowed his own eyes at his sister, only one being seen as half his face was hidden behind a curtain of crimson hair; a single, golden streak sticking out like a sore thumb right in the middle of the bangs. "You only gave them to me so you'd get what you wanted."

Chey hissed loudly and bared her fangs, and Lin hissed right back, lips peeling back from his own fangs, causing his slightly shorter sister to duck past him - piece of candy in hand - and slam right into long legs hugged by white stockings. The girl stumbled backwards into her brother, who only caught her long enough to snatch the Reese's peanut butter cup from her grasp before dropping her like a bad habit. With a loud shriek she fell onto her backside, wings fluttering angrily as she twisted around to slap her brother. "Why you-"

"There you nuisances are." Rhia bent down and gently clamped a hand around Chey's wrist before she could sock her brother, pulling her daughter to her feet and keeping a hold of her while she nabbed one of Lin's ebony wings and tugged him over to her other side. "Where's Ophi?"

"With you." Lin stated, turning his golden gaze up to his annoyed mother.

"Very funny, but try again."

"Not with you?" Chey ventured, arm going limp once she realized her mother was not about to let her go anytime soon.

"Bingo." Rhia released Lin's wing to take a hold of his free hand and she straightened up. "Now, those smart asses of yours are coming with me to find him, and then we're getting the hell out of here."

"Are you okay, Ma'man?" Lin asked after a moment of studying the demoness, the intensity in his cattish eyes surpassing that of his age.

"I'm fine, hun, I just realized how much I've come to hate parties."

Ophi watched the girl's movements closely, tail seeming to sway back and forth every time she changed positions. When she moved in closer, the hood around his head opened up slightly and he leaned back to widen the gap between them; golden eyes widening a margin. He did, however, scrunch up his nose lightly at the word she mimicked back at him, his expression looking like she was the dumbest person in the world.

He blinked again as she looked over the table, bi-colored wings fidgeting before he turned his attention from her to the small portion of things he could see, wondering what up there was so interesting. He took a step back when she knelt down, bowl in hand, but closed the gap he had just made as he stepped forward again and looked into the bowl full of candy.

The serpentine boy gave her a questioning look as she scurried under the table, tail curling slightly when she stuck her head out and invited him under. Again, he remembered Mama saying something about not going with strangers, and he also remembered Chey and Lin telling him to bite someone if they tried to take him anyway. Bite them hard, but Mama had quickly protested that and told him no, don't bite them. This girl seemed nice though, and it was just under a table. In a room with lots of other people. And a bowl full of candy. Full of chocolate even.

He squatted down near the table and lifted up the tablecloth with two fingers, like it was filthy and he didn't want to touch it anymore than he had to. Peering underneath the table, he found that it was actually kind of neat; a small, dark space where he could be almost all by himself. He liked dark, small places, especially if they were slightly humid and he could be alone. He slipped underneath the table, dragging his bag of candy with him, and plopped down onto the floor; golden eyes shining dully as he turned them to his new friend.

If she was willing to share her candy, he felt it was okay to share his too. Digging in his bag, he pulled out a lollipop with little brown barrels on the wrapper. He couldn't read, and so he didn't know that the flavor was root beer; all he knew was that it was almost as good as chocolate. Not quite that good, but it was close. He puckered up his lips for a moment, the drying punch on his face and neck starting to leave a sticky residue, almost like a second skin, and he held out the lollipop for her to take, finally grinning wide enough to reveal a set of sharp, needle-like fangs. "Lollipot."

Sukkubus
Rather than being annoyed by the party, Elliot was heartened by it. It had been so long since he'd seen so many children having fun, Sukku's own not included. He hadn't attended a Halloween celebration for nearly three years, so this was a reprieve to the usually lack-luster nights he spent on the thirty-first. Sukkubus had always loved the hocus-pocus stuff, and it hadn't changed through her absence.

He was glad she had invited him with her this year.

But he wasn't glad he had lost sight of Jocelyn.

He figured he would have better luck asking another child if they had seen the girl, since adults had a tendency to group them all together. Spotting someone rather small and hoping to God it was a child - would a grown-up have dressed like the tin man? - he moved forward and touched their shoulder, looking all the part apologetic.

"Ah...excuse me?"

First thing she realized were his fangs.

Second thing she realized, she liked his grin.

Jocelyn reached out and took the lollipop from Ophi's hand, putting it up to her eyes and twirling it to get a better look. Root beer? She had never heard of that before...but wasn't beer that drink that made you kind of crazy? Lowering the pop, she looked at the child curiously. What was he doing with something made of beer? Raising it again, she took a sniff, before unwrapping it and popping it into her mouth.

Well...gee. Whatever beer was, it couldn't taste that bad, right? Not like people made icky things into candy, right?

Using her tongue, she poked the lollipop to the side of her mouth and bent over, digging through the bowl for some of the good candy. 'Cause you know, people overloaded on the cheap kind...you really had to look for the tasty ones. Grown-ups had no taste, really. She began the meticulous process of pawing through the batch, before losing patience and dumping the entire bowl between herself and the snake child.

"Bingo."

They would put the chocolate at the bottom.

"Oh yeah...hey, um...do you like Reeses?" she questioned, reaching back and pulling her rabbit backpack forward before he could answer. She unzipped it and dug through her own candy, pulling out small orange square and handing it towards Ophi. "I kinda realized that people are always out of Reeses, ya know? But Blondie gave me some before we left the house."

For the first time in several days, the corners of her lips twitched upwards into a smile. A true smile. Sure, it was faint, but it was a smile nonetheless, wasn't it?

"I'm Jocelyn, by the way. 'Case you wanted to know..."

This Halloween party was going extremely well. Chuu was overjoyed to be talking to Asrafel again, as well as being thrilled that she got to introduce her adopted brother to the now-teenage friend. The gentle murmuring of conversation and laughter, as well as the squeaks of trick-or-treating children outside, could be heard wherever one turned. These "party" things were so great- Chuu took a mental note to attend more of them!

Such thoughts slowed down to a bit as a gentle ting sounded as someone tapped on the treeborn's shoulder. Someone else to meet? What an exciting day! Chuu turned around to see who it was, and came face-to- err... stomach with a man dressed up in a very convincing priest costume.

"Oh, hello there! Do you like the party? I hope you're having a good time~!" she said, even though she wasn't the host of the shindig. Then she noticed a look of apologeticness and concern on the man's face. "Oh, is there something I can help you with?"

Meanwhile, a sound pierced through the fog that was Mirorim's mind- the sound of wrapped candy being dumped from a bowl and rustling to the floor. The mirrorchild, usually blank and always reflecting other people's actions instead of doing his own, suddenly found himself walking toward the source of the sound. When he wasn't reflecting, though, walking was very difficult... he stumbled around awkwardly like a marionette being controlled by an inexperienced puppeteer.

At last he reached the treat table, and, following clues in the form of pieces of candy that had fallen out from under the tablecloth, walked right under it. His head just barely grazed the table's bottom as he breached the near-impenetrable tablecloth defense system and came into contact with two beings. One had long, platinum-blonde hair, and the other one had wings and snakelike features.

Okay. He had to speak... but what to say? Mirorim fingered his cat's cradle in what could be considered deep thought, and touched the one rust-colored bead on the magenta string. It brought him to say "Chakit?" in a voice that clearly wasn't his.

"Mama, why do we have to help? I want more candy." Chey frowned, the expression more of a pout than anything as her long, elven ears drooped. Her crimson eyes flicked towards a few others in the room, but she wasn't fond of people so she simply glared at them before turning her attention back to her mother.

"You have to help me because he's part of the family," Rhia explained patiently, "And he was following you. He's just a kid, a very young kid, you're older and are therefore the responsible one."

"Yeah, Chey." Lin chided to his sister, golden eyes narrowing as he grinned at her.

"You too, Lin." Rhia frowned, letting Lin go for a moment to crouch down and retrieve a blue, latex mask. "
Because she now remembered just how much kids were a pain in the a**.

Ophi took the peanut butter cup with some hesitancy, but he seemed to recognize the packaging as his golden eyes flashed in the gloom. He held it up to his nose and sniffed it, forked tongue slipping out from between his scaly lips to allow the tips to brush over the packaging ever so softly.

Blowing air out his nose, he hitched his upper lip and punctured the bright orange wrapping with one, slender fang. Slicing it open diagonally, he lowered it and stuck a finger in, hooking it around the piece of candy and extracting it through the slit he had made.

Discarding the empty wrapper by tossing it over his shoulder, he concentrated on breaking the peanut butter cup in half and proceeded to scoop out the insides with one finger; sticking it in his mouth and sucking it clean. He did this with both halves, leaving the chocolate hollowed out, before he popped both pieces into his mouth.

Cheeks full of chocolate, he turned his attention back up to the girl that sat across from him and arched his smooth brows, hands toying with the opening of his bag. Swallowing the two halves before they had barely started to melt, he flicked his tongue across his lips and pointed a finger at her, "Dawson?"

He didn't seem to care if she knew that he had just stated her name or not, he dipped his head and gazed down into his bag at the candy he had procured from the houses he and the others had visited. At the image of Mama and the twins, his head shot up; slitted eyes widening slightly as he turned to look over at the tablecloth. She was probably out there wondering where he was, seeing as she didn't seem to like him going off by himself. Which was strange to him; he liked being by himself, she should want him to be happy.

"Hn, Mama..." He paused and scrunched up his face for a moment, wings fidgeting as he tried to figure out how to say it. He only knew so many real words, after all, it was sometimes hard for him to get his meaning across. Had he been able to comprehend things a little better, he would now know what Mama meant when she said that the serpent child was sometimes too smart for his own good. "Mama look... go walk... bye-bye?"

He seemed to wait a moment to see if she had understood, but a split second later lost interest in whether or not she had figured it out. He looked back down at his bag and rubbed at his slightly sticky face before searching through it again, thick tail coiling in the air behind him. He had to search again, because you know, there was always a chance he had missed a piece of chocolate.

A second later Ophi's head snapped up from his search through his bag at the intrusion of another child, one he hadn't noticed on his way over to the table before he had run into Jocelyn. His slitted eyes flashed in the gloom as they swept over the other boy, evaluating him; the cobra hood unconsciously stretching out a little further and his wings opening up slightly. He was obviously wary, as he had been with Jocelyn, but the hand that had fallen still in the bag of candy came to life again and started searching through the darkness for the chocolate he so desired.

He could still be comfortable with two instead of one, but that didn't mean he had to talk to the other child. And if any others decided to crawl into the small, enclosed space beneath the table, he was out of there. Lowering his gaze to the bag once more, his tail slithered across the floor behind him as he pushed aside some sort of purple candy, but he did keep his attention focused on Jocelyn and the boy. Yes, he was a little paranoid and untrusting; blame his guardian for that.

Sukkubus
The smile that came to his face was automatic, but not fake; the little girl had inadvertently pulled it from him before he could respond! She was so bright and polite, and were it not for the funnel on her head, he would have ruffled her hair in affection.

He folded his hand behind his back and canted his head, a smile unwavering as he gave a small nod, "Ah, yes. The party is wonderful. But...ah, it'd be a lot more enjoyable if I could find the person I'm looking for."

His gentle smile became a sheepish grin, one hand lifting to rub the back of his neck. "You see, I'm looking for a little girl about ye high" - he lifted his hand to held it just below his ribs - "with platinum blonde hair and green eyes. Ah...she was wearing an Alice costume and the most disgruntled look you'd ever seen..."

"No, it's Jocelyn," she muttered, staring at Ophi as if he'd grown a second head. That was the strangest - but coolest - way she'd ever seen someone open a candy before. No doubt she'd try it later on in the confines of her room though she already knew the outcome. Maybe she was psychic? Because she knew she'd be wearing the chocolate rather than enjoying it.

"Oh well...I guess you can call me Dawson." She gave a listless shrug and began picking all the chocolate Tootsiepops she saw in the pile, stashing them into her bag. "Oh, do you want any of these?" She held out three, sticks first.

Mama. Why did Sukkubus come to mind when he had said that? The little girl lifted a hand and knuckled her forehead, lower lip jutting out. Blondie was not her mother...she just took care of her. That was all.

So why did she feel jealous of Ophi?

She hadn't time to deliberate upon her sudden envy when Mirorim's voice - uh... - yanked her from her reverie. She started and turned to stare at the child, her eyes as wide as saucers. Why was she always being startled like that?! The glare she gave him died the minute she figured out his baby tongue.

Jocelyn was gonna be a pro at this.

"You...want chocolate too, huh?" she asked, wishing she could crouch over the pile of candy and scuttle away with it. But she didn't and opted for scooting over, actually inviting the child to sit next to her. Amazing.

"Well...I have some. There should still be some in the pile...if Snake-boy didn't take it all."

Mouse Pachinkorelli
"Oh, you're looking for someone? I hope I can help!" Chuu said earnestly, ears managing to wiggle a bit under the weight of the funnel. The priest's description seemed very familiar... "Oh, I know someone who looks like that! Her name is Jocelyn! Could she be the one you're looking for?" The treeborn forgot to mention that she had no idea who this Alice character was, but that was of little importance anyway. As long as Jocelyn still had blonde hair and green eyes, she could be found!

As it would, the girl that the priest was looking for was glaring at Chuu's adopted brother. And the mirrorchild was... well, doing what he does best. Mimicking the glare as best he could with his facial features. The rest of his body copied the shifting motions that the snake child did in his wariness.

One of the beads on his cat's cradle turned envy green as Mirorim spoke in Jocelyn's voice: "You... want chocolate too, huh?" He then took the spot that Jocelyn had offered him, looking with muted interest at the candy. What were you supposed to do with this stuff?

Rhiannon Everwind
Ophi glanced at Jocelyn every now and then as she spoke, golden eyes sparkling curiously, but he listened to her with only half an ear as his attention was fastened somewhere within the black depths of the bag that held his candy. He was fairly certain by this time he had extracted and eaten all the chocolate that was in there, but there was still quite a bit of other treats, so... who was to say there wasn't a Hershey's bar or a KitKat hiding somewhere, trying to escape a fate that included a child's stomach?

His gaze rose for a moment as Jocelyn fell silent, catching the pout she placed on her face as she pulled within herself to contemplate things. His eyes dropped slightly and noted the candy she offered him, thick tail coming to life behind him. He recalled having a few of those in his bag, which he had promptly eaten upon finding out what they tasted like, and finding that she was willing to share such delicious candy was a mystery to him.

He would be hard pressed to share something like that.

He turned his narrowed, slitted gaze to the child that had shown up moments before as he sat down next to Jocelyn; Ophi's wings opening slightly and he leaned back a little. Thinking that perhaps the blonde girl had offered him the Tootsiepops by mistake, not realizing what they were, he reached out and snatched them from her hand before she could change her mind. His arm was shockingly fast, shooting out and then snapping back once his fingers had curled around the Tootsiepop sticks; the chocolaty lollipops dropping into his bag a few seconds after they had been enveloped in Jocelyn's hand.

He eyed the other boy as he mimicked Jocelyn's voice, and then shot her a rather vehement look when she called him Snake-boy. His lips parted for a moment, the muscles attached to the fangs stretching as his mouth opened wide in a yawn, more out of boredom than actual weariness. Wings arching outwards underneath the confines of the tablecloth, he glanced over to the area he had crawled in from; picking out three familiar voices and narrowing his eyes as he tried to hear what they were saying.

After a moment he looked back to Jocelyn and the boy whose name he didn't yet know, debating on going out to Mama and the others or staying here. In the end, the prospect of perhaps getting more candy kept him rooted to the floor and he set his hands in his lap; golden eyes flashing dully in the gloom as he silently studied the other two.
