Disoriented and aching, Deimos didn't at first know where he was. Even when his eyes reluctantly opened, the trees around him, and the grass tickling the pads of his paws was unfamiliar. Not only that, but he wanted to bury his head in the dirt and leave it there, it hurt so bad.
Whimpering softly, he suddenly felt something shift beside him and he jerked, rolling onto his side and away. Only after the renewed pain in his head subsided did he see Eiros, blinking owlishly at him. Then it all came roaring back.
"You . . . stayed with me."

"Yup." Grabbing the other half of the squirrel, Eiros nudged it in front of the older pup. "Saved you some lunch, too," he added in a quite ordinary tone, as if he hadn't done anything unusual. After all, Eiros had a family to feed him, even if he came back without anything from a hunt...which was usually the case. Something about this strangely colored pup's manner led Eiros to think that such wasn't the case for him.
"I mean, I couldn't have just left you here. Bleeding like that, something probably would have smelled you and then where would you be? In some lynx or bear's belly maybe." Eiros nodded, his eyes serious. "At least with me here, I could get help if I had to."

"I . . . " He didn't know what to say. Nobody had shown him such kindness since his father had died. Maybe if he ate something first, his brain would stop hurting and let him thank the little pup.
Digging into the squirrel, he finished it in record time, leaving little more than a pile of fur and a few crunched up bones behind. Already feeling refreshed and a bit more alert, he sat up on his haunches, shaking his head experimentally to see how much it still hurt.
There was only a little twinge behind his left eye and a sting from his injured ear.
Shifting his paws, he glanced at the trees, unwilling to meet Eiros' gaze. Whether it was embarrassment or pride, he wasn't quite sure.
"Thank you . . . for not leaving. I . . . I appreciate it."

"I needed to do it...or I wouldn't have been able to tell anyone about it. Mom and Dad would take my hide if I'd left you..." It was finally sinking into Eiro's mind that this pup wasn't used to being treated with any sort of kindness at all. But...that didn't make much sense, to a puppy that hadn't yet experienced much hardship, who had his needs provided for. "Don't you have...parents, somewhere?" He wasn't quite aware he'd spoken his thought aloud.

Deimos looked towards the trees, his gaze growing distant. The other pup's innocent question cut him deeply, reminding him of his beloved father. "No . . . My father's dead."
He didn't add anything about his mother, mostly because he didn't refer to the b***h as any relation of his; after all, she had tried to kill him on several occasions before he could even open his eyes. Not only that, but he still wasn't sure if she was even dead. She could still be roaming the woods somewhere, completely uncaring of the fact that her mate was dead, and whelp alone and scared.
Standing tall and shaking himself, the spotted pup dipped his head to the younger male, wagging his tail slightly. "I thank you again, pup. I'll repay the favor some day," he added, his voice full of sincerity and thankfulness.
Before Eiros had a chance to reply, Deimos had turned and disappeared into the trees' shadows, as quick and silent as a specter. It was almost as if he had never been there.
