"This... repeating? Sure." she said, suddenly glad he seemed to understand the situation. "Conversation repeating, alright? You help me, speaking help!" She smiled, snorting, pleased with his intelligence. Oh, he was quick to catch on to her unique disability. "I'm... repeating speaking. Always. Help, Guilian?"
She shifted her weight, waiting for his response, bending her head and taking a drink. She was not used to speaking, and it appeared that making words was a thirsty business. "Pardon, repeating conversation. Unnerving, yes, this."

...Well, he'd been thinking that life needed a bit more drama these days; drama of the positive sort, of course. However, he wasn't sure if this counted as drama or not! Thought-provoking, to be sure, but beyond that...
Leaning over, he replied with carefully chosen words. "So, you can only repeat what you hear? You need me to talk, so that you can use my words to form your own sentences and speech patterns?" Sounded complicated, alright. "I'm not sure I understand why, but I suppose that we can work with that. Does this mean that you're going to actually come out of there, though? It's easier for me to handle being repeated if I can see who's repeating me."
This statement was accompanied by a charming smile; he had high hopes for this mare, repetition or not. After all, there were some things that sounded good repeated...
"That sounds fair, don't you think?"

"Repeat what I hear!" she agreed, pleased. "Sentences, speech, conversation, yes." He was very intelligent! She eyed the red stallion cautiously for a moment. "I come out, you bite?" her voice was very cautious now. After all, she had promised to bite him if he came in, shouldn't it work the other way around, theoretically? On one hand, she knew it wouldn't, but she did want to be certain. After all, a bite would be quite painful. "Unpleasant."
She shifted again, sidling closer to the light. "You bite, unpleasant, I bite you face to face." her voice was warning. "I handle conversation, out, face to face. I come out, warmed by sun. Pleasure, conversation."
Oh, these piecemeal words, how frustrating! She wanted to have more words, more of a vocabulary! But somehow she didn't think it would grow that large, unless he started running his entire vocabulary by her, one word at a time.

Huh. So she could only repeat what she heard...if that was the case, she had to have had very little contact, since she was only repeating words he was saying in the course of THEIR conversation. Did she remember words from other conversations, or did she have to start anew each time? And was that actually a disability, or was it a mental disorder, or...
Gads, he was so curious now it was almost unbelievable; curious about something other than her appearance, which for him was quite a deviation. But how could he be anything BUT intrigued when presented with such a novel problem? So very many questions he had!
But first, they had to figure out a vocabulary; he'd have to be careful in his questioning, or she'd be completely unable to answer. And before THAT...
He couldn't help but chuckle at her question. "Bite? Hardly, Chica; such behavior isn't my style Rest assured, you are totally safe from me and my teeth from this moment onwards; so, feel free to make an appearance!" Any time now would be nice, actually...

She eyed the light, and wrinkled up her nose. Oh well, she'd agreed to make the bargain. Tentatively, one hoof entered the light, almost as if she expected to catch fire. "Sun bite." she said mournfully. And then mustered up would she could, and slipped into the sunlight.
Oh, how hot it was, so unprotected from the biting rays. Usually there were trees, or rocks, or something! "Guilian, sun bite Chica! I face to face, you teeth safe, sun bite!" She blinked at him, eyes sun-dazed. Then she glanced over, looking for another source of shading, so that they could be face to face without the sun 'biting' her. =Not seeing one, she scuttled over to the other side of the rock, where there was light, but also a good amount of shade. She could be seen, and there wouldn't be the bright ball of light making her blink.
Her long mane was messy from how long she'd been curled up under the rock, and she was rather soggy, but all in all.... well, she wouldn't know if she looked passable or not. How was she to judge?

A vision. Sheer, absolute perfection, the like of which he hadn't seen since...well, he didn't know when. A glorious mane of curls, silvery as the moon and unkempt as though she had just risen from sleep...or something else much more invigorating; a dark body, slim and shapely, with a shimmering pair of teal blue wings, wings that shone in the sunlight like two polished stones...eyes as bright and intense as emeralds looking right at him, right through him...
Guilian stared at Echo with all the enthusiasm of a starving man at a buffet, admiration and astonishment all across his face.
At least, that was the look until the mare all at once turned and took off around the rock, leaving Guilian blinking a bit in shock and confusion.
What had just happened? He had been looking at her, hearing words that weren't really registering, now he was staring at a rock? Something was off there.
Frowning a bit in perplexion, he made his way around the rock as well in search of the mare. "I'm sorry, Chica; I totally missed that! Is there something wrong?" A lame thing to say, but sadly the truth. Darn impressionability!

"Sorry Guilian. Sun bites." she explained, from the other side of the rock. Her head poked around the stone, and she gave him a sheepish smile. "Guilian missed wrong sun bites?" the look she gave him, one of cocked eyebrow and mingled surprise and amusement was noticed in the water, and she made a face at herself, then laughed. She looked at him, opening her mouth to try and say something else, but nothing was there to say. She tried, but all that would come out were little whimpers, involuntary noises any child could make when breathless or straining.
She finally gave up, with a frustrated pout and a toss of her silvery hair. "Guilian pretties." she said finally, truly looking for the first time at the stallion. He was red, and black, and had lovely flowers twined in his mane and tail.
They looked tasty.......
She eyed him again, wondering if he'd notice one disappearing.

Sun bites. Ok, that was clear as mud. As he once again came into sight of the mare, Guilian made a concerted attempt to focus on the words, not the speaker. It was a difficult choice, to be sure, and even harder in action...but he was managing.
Managing to be confused was more like it, though.
"The sun bites? Do you mean the sun hurts? The sun burns? Hurts your eyes? Or are you light-sensitive?" Tossing out possibilities like the flowers he was fond of distributing, he hoped that at least ONE of the words would help out. She seemed alternately amused and upset; he was just confused.
Compliments were always clear, though. At her comment, he couldn't helo but laugh, nodding his head at the mare. "My thanks, Chica; though to what are you referring to? Me as a whole? My hair? My roses? You'll have to be more specific, I'm afraid."
However, he gave her a wink to let her know he was teasing, along with the belatedly useful introduction. "And yes I am Guilian, Chica; and it's a pleasure. Unless I say your name, I suppose I won't know it though, will I?"

"Yes, yes, Guilian! Sun burns, hurts eyes." She smiled, pleased. "Guilian, mmmm.... Guilian...." she tilted her head, seeking a way to tell him how smart he was, to praise him. "Guilian un-unpleasant." she was proud of herself. "Guilian pleasure, yes, pleasure face to face." she looked so very happy too, her head giving little wiggles, and it working it's way to her fluttering wings.
"Guilian... pretties. Hair, roses, whole. Guilian roses, pleasure chica." How was she to explain? He was just pretty. All bright, and dark, and those flowers really did look pretty.... tasty.
If she didn't know better, she'd think she was hungry. "And yes, Chica name... name..." she tilted her head. Then brightened. "Chica name, name, name, name, name...." as she spoke, she dropped her voice, quieter and quieter, like fading echoes. "Guilian know name?"

Ah, how very charming! Throwing back his head, Guilian allowed himself to laugh, amused beyond mere words at the mare's speech. Limited vocaulary or not, she definitely knew how to turn a compliment!
"Well, Chica, you are remarkably pleasant yourself; I am merely flattered that you think that same of me. Truly, it is a pleasure to be so well-liked..."
And 'pleasure' was such a nice word. He'd definitely like to do as she'd said...but he'd bide his time on that! Never assume where mares were concerned, moreso when they couldn't say exactly what they meant. Besides, right now he had a guessing game!
As the mare began to repeat herself, he immeadiatly set to work. That had to be a clue, right? "So, your name is quiet? Quieter...Soft? Softly? Or Repeat...Repetition? Soft Repetition?"

She smiled, watching him laugh. It was nice that she was so amusing to some. "Chica flattered Guilian think that I pleasant...." But... Maybe Guilian not so smart. She grinned, brain working while he thought. At his guess, she tsked, and shook her head. "Repetition, yes, name, mmmm....." she shook her head. "Un-name." She smiled warmly, and relaxed. How else to hint to the stallion? Nodding, she splashed in the water, then made the same noise herself. "Splash, splash, splash." she said, and eyed him again.

Ok, obviously giving her more words didn't guarantee clarity; that seemed to be the most confusing statement yet! Although Guilian DID understand that he was being teased, and he chuckled ruefully at the knowledge. "Now that's just unkind, Chica; it's not everyday that my entire conversation is in the form of a riddle! But I was close, hrm?"
Her agreement about repetition and the splashing drew his attention for another long moment, his gaze intense and his expression thoughtful as he pondered. Repetition, repeating, getting quieter...
"ECHO!" Brightening, he looked up and gave the mare a dazzling smile. "That's it, isn't it? Your name is Echo, Chica?"
How utterly and completely self-evident! That HAD to be it!

"Echo un-unkind. Guilian close, yes." But no cigar, buddy! When the red stallion gave the correct answer, she gave a pleased toss of her head. "Yes! Echo's name Echo!" she snorted, excited, shaking her head so hard her entire body wriggled. "Thanks, Guilian!" she danced a little to the side, wings fluttering.
Blinked as the sun hit her eyes and made an unhappy noise, dancing back into the shade. "Light sensitive. Sun bites Echo. Sun unkind." She looked at him mournfully. "Guilian, sun unkind?" wasn't he bothered by all the light as well? Never did she pause to think that if she only hadn't hidden herself constantly in shadow, that she might not be so sensitive now.

Woot for the power of guessing! In retrospect, it was actually more than a wee bit ridiculous that it had even taken him THIS long to guess her name; hell, he'd never before encountered a name so exquisitely appropriate to it's owner. After all, all she seemed to do was repeat!
Still, there was something to be said about the feeling of victory, belated as it was; and Guilian's pleasure was increased at the mare's evident pleasure as well. At her antics, he allowed himself to laugh as well, amusement snapping in his black eyes.
He was still chuckling when he shook his head, answering her question with actions more than words. "No, I can't say that the sun is at all a problem for me, Echo Chica; perhaps you are bothered by it due to sitting in the dark for so long?"
After all, he'd felt such burns after emerging from the dark himself, though such pain was usually restricted to his eyes. However, he had no idea how long Echo had been hiding under the rock! Still, that didn't mean he couldn't be charitable, as evidenced by the way that he suddenly raised a wing over the mare's head, shielding her from the sun. "Is that better?"

Oh, he had a lovely laugh. Echo smiled, relaxing into the conversation. "Perhaps Sun unkind." she countered. After all... Bees could be unkind, and plants that dug into her tender flesh, or ripped at her mane. And the coyote who had chased her until she took off into flight, and the.... well. Needless to say, she'd place the blame on the sun before herself! Darkness had always been kind to her, after all.
When Guilian placed his wing over her head, she smiled at him gratefully, nuzzling at him in thanks. "Better, Guilian. I..." she couldn't have the words, simply didn't have them, so she bowed her head lightly. Now she was shaded, and he could see her. Two birds with one stone.
Or maybe she could get him to find trees. Then his wing wouldn't get tired. So she nosed at him again, jerking her head towards the large weeping willow. "Guilian."
