ebony_kara I cried during the I'll cover you reprise and Goodbye love. I have performed goodbye love and still hurting during a presentation. I cried after I was done and I'm going to see the musical next month so I think I have to take some tissues with me. Going to see RENT, or L5Y?

Gelasius I've actually made a tape of depressing songs from musicals. Here are some: "Where Is Love?" from Oliver!"The Joker" from The Roar of the Greasepaint and the Smell of the Crowd"Where Am I Going?" from Sweet Charity"Look Over There" (Reprise) by the son in La Cage aux Folles"Down Once More/Masquerade/All I Ask Of You" (Reprise) by the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera (the only album that made me cry just listening to it) "There's A Fine Fine Line" from Avenue Q"Tell Me It's Not True" from Blood Brothers"Lessen #8" from Sunday in the Park With George"He Lives In You" and "Endless Night" from The Lion King"Momma Look Sharp" from 1776"Something Just Broke" from Assassins (Broadway production) "Where Did That Little Dog Go?" from Snoopy (the musical) "Hey, Girlie" from Two By Two"If He Walked Into My Life" from Mame"To Each His Dulcinea" and "Finale" ("The Impossible Dream") from Man of La Mancha"Spring Awakening/Left Behind" from Spring Awakening"Come To Me (Fantine's Death)", "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables," "A Little Fall of Rain," "The Second Attack (Gavroche's Death)", "On My Own," and the Finale (Valjean's Death) from Les Miserables Lol. I made a playlist.
Haven't actually heard of most of these, but I agree totally with Left Behind, There's A Fine, Fine, Line, Endless Night, and SITPWG.
And of course, pretty much everything from Les Mis XD

"Master of the House" isn't depressing at all. Actually, it's quite fun. A bit revolting, maybe, when he starts talking about cooking animals.

Hence the "pretty much" =) Yeah, as much as I love Master of the House, it scares me a bit, I gotta say.

Sweeney Todd is worse then. A barber killing customers and his downstairs neighbor cooking their bodies into meat pies. Delicious ones, I understand. It's one of my favorite musicals. Les Miserables tops it though.

I'm in love with the Dutch cast recording of RENT, but I've never heard L5Y in another language...

Ariies thelovelyLIZ Ariies thelovelyLIZ Okay, here goes! Basically anything from Les Mis. But most especially Own My Own, only because I've been in that position. A Little Fall of Rain makes me cry if sung correctly too, and if I've fallen in love with Eponine throughout the corse of the show. RENT, probably Without You, Goodbye Love, and Halloween. And I'll Cover You- Reprise of course. But all for different reasons. Spelling Bee, I agree, The I Love You song. I ADORE that song and I just want to hug Olive sad Also, the song Nice from Lucky Stiff. This is kind of a weird song to thing of as sad, since there's some funny and sweet parts in it, but it always kind of makes me sad because it reminds me of a relationship with a very close friend. Now That I've Seen Her from Miss Saigon always is like ahhh too. The Finale to Godspell is good too, and By My Side. Both songs have made cry :/ There's a million more, but... we'll leave it at that. Definately agree with what you said about Les Mis. I think the reason I think of all the Fantine songs as the most depressing is mostly that I fell much more in love with Sophia Ragavales' Fantine than any other character in that production. Plus, she was looking directly at me during Come to Me (Fantine's Death) when she was singing to Cosette. Gah!
And I second the other RENT songs everyone has mentioned.
I adore Olive and The I Love You Song as well. I cried so much in that show. Other parts which made me cry a lot a lot were Leaf's I'm Not That Smart and the Reprise, and the point at which Marcy decides to get out of the bee. But those were more triumphant than depressing.
I know I'm forgetting a lot of songs. There have been so many times where I listen to a song, and a certain lyrics just hits me like an stone as absolutely crushing. The Last Five Years does that to me a lot. Pretty much every song.
Oh. Adding... Home, from The Beauty and the BeastLeaf Coneybear is my favorite speller, so I love I'm Not That Smart and such =( When he got out I was like NOOOOO. As for Marcy... I was like YOU GO GIRL because even though she was failing she was 100% okay with that. And I really want The Last Five Years soundtrack... I've heard it was amazing. Leaf and Olive were my favourites =) Although it had LOTS to do with the actors I saw (Boston (AKA San Francisco?) cast.) At first I really really wanted Leaf to win and all (and I wanted Leaf and Olive to get together! =P), but when his reprise rolled around I was just like AWWWW he's so amazing, and no one else could have just a great end, so it was awesome. I love the Marcy/Jesus scene so much XD "I knew you were asian!"
And you should DEFINATELY get the L5Y cast recording. One of my favourites. Jason Robert Brown, Sherie Rene Scott, and Norbert Leo Butz? You just don't get much better than that.
And new most depressing songs:
From Spring Awakening, Left Behind, Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind, and Those You've Known (I pretty much couldn't handle seeing this scene live last night. I'm choking up thinking about it.)I saw the first national tour of Spelling Bee so we didn't have an Asian Jesus, but there was a balcony off the side of the stage and Jesus showed up the balcony xD It's like all of a sudden there was Jesus on a balcony xD Amazing. I about died laughing, probably one of my fave scenes. And I will get L5Y... just whenever I have money xD I love Norbie though... I saw him live in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (!!!) and I applied as a theatre major to Webster University where he got his undergrad degree x3

I'm uber jealous that you saw Norbert. I almost saw DRS three days before it closed, with Sherie Rene Scott, but I really only wanted to see it to see Sherie, and we won the lottery for The Drowsy Chaperone, so I saw that instead. Glad I did. DRS last night was awesome, but I couldn't really appreciate the leads because I kept comparing them to Norbert and Sherie. Alack.
We went and student rushed in the middle of the blizard, though. That was awesome.

It's occurred to me that the reason I'm not really contributing to this thread is that most of the songs people consider depressing, I just consider boring.
I do get depressed whenever I hear "Feeling Good" from The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd because, even though it has upbeat lyrics, it's just so slow (and boring) that it comes off as depressing. Not to mention the fact that it became a jazz standard, but no one realizes that it was written by the same team that wrote the songs from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I thus find it to be ironic justice that when, a few weeks ago, two contestants on American Idol sang it, they both got kicked off that week.

Oh LOTS 3nodding Yep I discovered Les Mis by being part of it last fall at my high school. " I'm a freshman. Knowing thses students then hearing them sing is just so powerful. The ones that really make me cry are, Come to me, On My Own, I dreamed a Dream, and Bring him Home. There was this one song from beauty and the beast that I heard in 8th grade (once again at my high school) that the beast sang and it was absolutely beautiful but I cant remember the name. Oh! and He lives in You from Lion King (AMAZING SHOW) and another song I cant remember the name of from Lion King when Simba is alone and has talked to the spirit of Mufasa. Another tear jerker was I'll cover you reprise from Rent and the Finale. All of these made me cry, but not all of them are depressing. He lives in You is just powerful. Same with the Rent finale.
