No denial. There was nothing from Oz at the painful words she had spoken. Somehow she had still had the hope. All that they had shared, might that not have led to love? For her it had, so new to relationships and new to receiving affection that she clung to it with her whole being. She wanted to do that to him, cling to his body and feel the security she felt every time she had been in his arms. But what if he backed away? She curled into herself a little, tears falling.
'I am strong? Not ever. Okasan was always right. Small. No-thing..'
It was as though something had broken inside her, the loss of the use of her legs made her feel isolated. To drag herself around in a wheelchair; she hadnt managed to face that and her Lake forays had been small in number for fear of who or what she might come across.
This meeting with Oz - it was the proverbial straw.

Oz was not in a happy place. Comforting girls with words was never his strong point, and was worse since being out of the dating game for so long. He listened to Sayuri's self-beration awkwardly, knowing somewhere inside that such low self-esteem didn't seem right on a girl.
But Oz was comparing Sayuri to the girls of England. The boozy girls of England. Oz sigh-grumbled.
"You can't say that...not after everything you've been through..." he tried to encourage her.
And it was true really. He was surprised he hadn't stooped low by now, let alone someone as fragile as Sayuri, who had suffered worse in losing her legs! He tried once more at an attempt of physical comfort, just hoping that maybe holding her would calm her down, ease her fears.
