Aph subtly attempted to back away every time Alex invaded his personal space, especially once he had clicked out of his spiel about colors. The result was they had gradually migrated to the left, and were now standing in between the brush racks and the paints.

He smiled uneasily at her question. Once again keeping his hand at his neck, scratching it compulsively, he answered to the best of his ability. "Er, Twilight, that's a tricky one... I tend to make mine with cool colors instead of mixing warms and colds. But then again if you're going for a tropical Gambino-type twilight, warm hues would be best. S-see on most tubes, on the bottom it says "warm" or "cool"? That's an easy way to erm, to tell."

He examined the wall for a second, trying to think. "I would use a 50&#xgr;ay, a white, and a dull gunmetal blue, with lots of gray hue to it. Twilights are never really bright, at first.... But to break it up you might want to add some soft orange clouds? that would bring color to it..." He chuckled nervously. "It's kinda h-hard to tell when I don't know w-what the picture in your mind l-looks like."

The woman blinked, then coughed and walked around Aphismet to inspect the brushes...and to hide her utter embarrassment. Alex cringed inwardly; she really had to start getting a better hold of her emotions! She'd scared the man again, and she felt horrible about it.

"I...suppose it looks different to everyone. Sorry, that was awfully silly of me." Alex smiled, but it faltered at his uneasy expression. Instead of elaborating on the image in her mind - which was quickly evaporating while she kicked herself - she switched the subject back to paintbrushes. "Widebrush," she said out loud, her voice considerably quieter than her excited antics, "and a fanbrush, for certain."

She looked at the brushes, not really seeing them, wondering how to to continue the conversation. It occurred to her that she wasn't very swift at communicating without getting her whole body involved. Quietly, she cursed her exuberant Italian nature.

"Ah, you know," she started, trying to pick and choose her words, "you're quite good at thinking on your feet, with...with all my questions. Have you ever taught art?" She turned one of the brushes around in her hand, thumbing the bristles. "I know people would pay for the type of information you're sharing so freely." Alex turned her head slightly to look at Aphismet, a gentle smile on her lips.

Aphismet blushed at the compliment. "Oh, oh no, I've never taught a-art. I don't think I'm a-any good at it really, I just have done it for a l-long time, and know a lot of th-the technical stuff..." He shrugged and kept his eyes carefully on the paintbrushes. Fingering a fanbrush lightly, he glanced over at the girl every once in a while as he continued.

"Erm, I'm sure you'll do fine on your own. D-don't forget a fine-tip brush, too, for d-details.. You might not need it r-right away, but it'll come in handy."

Aph tried to think of something else to break the highly uncomfortable silence, but he couldn't. Escape was now looking quite the attractive choice, and so he began to back away towards the cash. "Well, erm, I, uh... I have to g-go. They'll be w-waiting for me at, erh, home. M-my little brother and my, erm..." Aph wondered how to explain Rivener, and ended up deciding it would take too long. "M-my Rivener." He offered a shy smile as he turned and went to pay.

Alex continued to thumb the brush in her hand, looking sidelong at Aphismet. She found herself a little surprised that he was so knowledgeable based soley on his liking for art. Realizing that she was going to bend the brush in her hand, she quickly stuffed them in with the paints, making sure to grab the fine-tip as he recommended.

"Oh!" she exclaimed as Aphismet said he had to go. She remember that SHE had someone waiting for her, and they were going to be none too pleased at being left in the cold for this long! "W-wait! I-"

Alex was never this nervous. Snap out of it, she sighed inwardly, be yourself! You're probably less scary that way. That made her smile again. She wasn't sure what it was, but she enjoyed the man's company (as she had slipped) and wanted to repay him for his kindness.

"You've helped me a lot," she said, walking with him towards the register, "and I'd like to repay you for your kindness." She put her items on the counter, allowing Aphismet to go first. Reaching in her back pocket, she pulled out a small card and a pen. She put the card face down on the counter and started to write on it, saying, "If it's okay with you, I'd like to take you to lunch. You can bring your little brother and your Rivener, too. My treat!"

As she finished writing her cell number, she turned and smiled at Aphismet again, tucking her hair behind her ear. "I'll be in town for a while. I'm pretty much snowed in as it is." She handed him her card.

"That's my personal cell on the back. Don't feel obligated," she said with a stern look that quickly turned into a smile, "but I would love to see...to talk to you again. Maybe I can bring a work in progress for you."

Aphismet was staring at the card like he was holding the Holy Grail. Did he... Did he just get a-... He flipped the card, and there it was. The ink seemed like it was liquid silver. A girl's phone number.

Aph's head swam and he leaned heavily on the counter, for a second thinking that he might faint out of the pure shock of what just happened. He then smiled dumbly over at the girl and nodded. "Oh, erm... Erh, y-yes.. Yes, that would b-be n-n-n-nice... I'll c-call you. And we will have luuuuuh-" He frowned as the word refused to leave his throat. He coughed and tried to look casual, blushing. "Erm, lunch."

He paid the clerk and took his bag, wavered in place for a minute, smiling stupidly at his shoes. He was completely at a loss about what to say now, and when he finally looked up, he simply whimpered the only thing he could think of to say. "Erm, goodbye!"

And before he could be any more pathetic, he dashed out of the store, hurrying home. He felt the card in his pocket, and grinned. Wow, his first phone number ever! He would frame this thing!
