"Yeah, the octopus man is Billy." He recalled him from the theater construction site. "None of the other's I'm familiar with." He hadn't met any fish-man or the one she called Richard.

"I've only met a few girls. Aside from Emelyn there was Emerwyn and Nita. They are all very nice." He slipped the bottle into his pocket. "Maybe try coming around the bit of construction that is happening near the village? They are putting up a theater. There hasn't been many girls around there that I've seen, but you might run into someone there to talk to."

"I've met Nita...it was in the cafeteria...only a few days after I got here, I think..." Rachel shrugged. "She was nice, but I don't think we hit it off too well."

Rachel raised an eyebrow at the mention of the construction of a theater. She really didn't get out much did she? "A theater? I hadn't heard anything about that. What kinds of shows are they planning on putting on?" She didn't know if she would be interested in helping, but at least it might get her to socialize more, and the performances could be interesting.

Lucas scratched his ear idly as he recalled. "I think I heard something about a talent show. I'm not positive, though. Likely plays will be put on. I don't think it's been advertised much. They are probably trying to get it built before they start anything. But you could stop by and talk to Gaius. He's in charge of construction. He could tell you more about than I could. Or from Billy. I think it was all his idea."

A talent show? Well...if it had been before she had changed, Rachel might have been interested in performing, but as it was, she didn't think she had anything to offer in the way of talent at the moment. Not unless there was a waddling competition at the moment.

Rachel grimaced slightly when she heard that the project had been Billy's brainchild. If he was involved, did she really want to try and get in on it? Their only meeting had been rather hostile. She tried to push thoughts of the octopus man aside and concentrate on the other name Lucas had mentioned.

"Gaius? That name sounds vaugely faimilar....what does he look like?"

"That's actually a harder question to answer since nobody stays the same for long. But before Gaius still had dark hair, tanned skin, and a really thick neck. Thicker than mine. He's also got wings on his back. He changed about a day before I did, though, so he's a little different now." Hopefully Gaius wasn't still running around with bandages on his face like he was Quasimodo or Darkman. Would he even be showing up at the construction site?

Shrugging away the questions, he returned his focus to Rachel.

"Hmm....was he at the Thanksgiving foodfight thing? I think I might have seen him there." Rachel thought she had recalled seeing a winged man there, aside from that dragon...thing. She thought maybe he had even been the one that had dumped ice cream all over her. She could have been wrong though. That whole day was kind of a blur.

"Yeah, I believe he was." He wished he could think happily on the food-fight. It had been rather fun. Probably more fun than he'd had on the Island. But Zach had made good work of souring it all in the end.

"That must be where I know that name from....well at least I know vaugely what he looks like now. He seemed nice enough..." Rachel had also had fun, but like he had done to Lucas, the red dragon man, Zach, had taken all the joy out of it. It wasn't an experience she would ever care to repeat.

An akward silence filled the air a moment, as both thought on that Thanksgiving. Rachel continued to absentmindedly pet Dasher, until she snapped out of it and made a stab at continuing the conversation and finding out more about the project.

"You said Billy was involved?" she asked tenetively. "I'm not so sure I want to go down there if he's going to be around. He and I well...let's just say I'm not sure we could ever be friends."

"He didn't seem like the most comfortable or pleasant person to be around. Fortunately I haven't had to interact with him much. I'm not a big fan of his scent or his bossy attitude." Or that annoying box he carries around. "What happened with him, if you don't mind me asking?"
PostPosted: Sat Feb 10, 2007 11:06 pm

"Well if I can be involved without having to interact with him...maybe I'll try. I just don't want a repeat of the encounter we had shortly after I changed." Rachel glanced over at him as he asked about what had happened. It was another one of those experiences that she really didn't like to think about, but she figured it couldn't hurt to tell Lucas. Besides, maybe Lucas could help her come up with a better way to solve the problem she was still dealing with, that had lead up to the encounter in the first place.

"Well...since I changed, I really didn't, or don't, fit in the shower well anymore, especially with my tail getting in the way." A hint of color came to Rachel's cheeks as she spoke. It was embarassing for her to talk about her new body so bluntly.

"Because it was so difficult, I thought it might be a good idea to just try bathing in the lake. I took my soap and shampoo down there, and started to take a bath, so-to-speak. Well only moments after I'm down there he starts to yell at me for 'muckin' up his water,' etc. etc." Rachel did her best to imitate Billy's voice when she was repeating what he had said, but she had never been very good at accents.

"All he could think about was that it was 'his' lake, and that I was tresspassing and defiling 'his' property, when in fact that lake belongs to everyone on the island. He didn't even relent when I told him that I was turning into a fellow water animal..." Rachel trailed off, hesitiaing to add the last part.

"And he called me fat...more than once." She lowered her eyes then, not wanting to really see Lucas' reaction to that final comment.

"Very not pleasant," he spoke flatly, though annoyed with the octopuses behavior.

"You could try talking to the labs. It's not something you might want to do, but they are the only ones who could fix your problem in the bathroom. Or at least tell them to evict Billy." He smirked.

The fat comment was more difficult to address. The topic of weight was dangerous territory, especially for a man. They were less adept at dealing with those kind of issues. At least Lucas was. Telling her she wasn't fat would not work and would be an obvious lie she'd see through. But he couldn't just agree with her that she was fat. But he couldn't just say nothing. "You shouldn't care what Billy says or thinks," he said after a moment of debate. "He's a jerk." He ran fingers absently over the fur on the back of his lower arm. "I know this change is hard for you, Rachel. Try not to let people like Billy to get to you. You'll make it through this." They weren't very helpful words, but it was all he could offer.

Rachel sighed when he mentioned the labs. She had kind of been expecting that and had considered it as a option but hadn't found it a favorable one.

"The labs weren't exactly...friendly...when I called them the last time, right after I changed. I asked for some clothes and it sounded like the guy on the other end was having a hard time keeping from laughing. I may have no other choice though...especially if it gets...worse." She smoothed out a wrinkle on her dress as she thought about how to respond to Lucas' second comment.

"It'd be easier if he weren't right, and if it weren't the biggest thing I had been trying to avoid in the past several years of my life. Sometimes I wonder what the point of trying is anymore. It won't get me anywhere. There's no point in trying to be the person I was, but I don't know where to go with the person I am..." She sighed again. "It's hard not to listen to what people say or think about you, when you're not sure what you think of yourself..."

"Yeah. The lab techs they have manning the phones aren't exactly the friendliest." He ran fingers through his hair. "If I ever figure out how to sew again with these hands, maybe I can give making some clothing for you a try. That way you won't have to ask the labs."

This conversation left him uncomfortable and frustrated. And when mixed with the dhole it made things worse. The dhole did not like these emotions and if it could have it's own way, it would bolt, try to run away. Escape it all and return to where it was more comforting. The human side found the idea appealing, but not at all an option.

Rachel's serum was much more difficult than his own and he knew would only get worse. She obviously needed some kind words. What could he say?

"I know. In school I worried about my glasses and being called four-eyes. I was tall and awkward in high school. A nerd. Now I worry about if I might be frightening to people. I'm almost afraid to smile or laugh and show my teeth. I have no idea what to think of myself. I wish I could tell you something, Rachel. I wish I could give you an answer that made things right or better." His hands fidgeted, the room slipping into an uncomfortable silence.

"On the outside Billy is an ugly, ink-spitting octopus. On the inside he's likely just as ugly thanks to whatever life he lived before and after he arrived on the Island." He paused. "It's kind of dorky, but I reread a book recently. Part of a mantra in the book is "My skin is not my own". It's funny how it applies here. On this Island we really don't have much control over our appearance. Every few months it changes again. I guess we should just give up on our bodies. We can't change it. But we can still change what is on the inside. Be who you want to be on the inside." He hoped she wouldn't look at him oddly for that, especially for the corny way he'd said it. It had been something he'd been mulling over before his most recent change. Right now it was hard to consider it, though, his anger and frustration over the loss of his hands and his feet hitting him hard.

Rachel was slightly overwhelmed by Lucas' kind offer and his testimony. She hadn't realized some of the things that worried him, she had only been concerned about herself, and it made her feel a bit guilty. A few tears stung her eyes, and she tried to blink them away, but one managed to escape and make its way down her cheek. She quickly tried to wipe it away, even though she knew he had probably already seen.

"Thank you Lucas. You're being so nice to me and I don't deserve it. I've only been through one change and you've been though three...and I've been selfish only thinking about how I feel and what I've been through. I'm sorry..." she frowned and looked down. "Thank you for offering to help me, just so I can avoid the labs, even though it would be hard for you, and thank you for trying to help me get a better perspective on things. I'll try and make myself believe that about me...."

A tear? That hadn't been any of reactions he'd expected. For a moment he worried she might really cry, but it seemed she got herself under control.

"Don't worry about it, Rachel." He offered her a kind smile. He still had a lot of doubts about being able to ever sew again. No attemts had been made since his change. He was almost afraid to. But he would give it a try. ...eventually.

For the moment he was happy that he helped make her feel better. His tail even wagged slightly. He was almost fearful of saying more and completely ruining it all, though. "You're welcome. I'm glad I could help."
