No Rest for the Wicked

Maryke Jimenez

There are often times when we get that deep forboding. That little twinge of butterflies or a fast beating heart that says something isn't right here. Nothing that could be named, but just a little something that raises a red flag in your gut and tells you s**t's about to go down. Unfortunately for Maryke, that center of her brain was on a temperary hiatus. At the moment she felt no sense of dread, only a zest for some fresh air like she'd been feeling since her last change. The trees beckoned her the way that cold hard cash used to get her all riled up. But things changed, and so did people. Cause if you weren't able to adapt you'd be consumed, spit up, and left for some scavenger to finish off.

And Maryke was the Queen of adaptation. Currently she was high in the tree tops on one of her favorite trees, overlooking Billy's. And she had plans for her lake monster boyfriend, big ones. She'd thought about it for a few days now, well aware of the holiday that was coming up. And why shouldn't they have themselves a little fun? Now that Aubrey (seemingly) was out of the way that meant that Maryke could just, well just live life. Was that so much to ask for? Considering her past life and the horrible state of affairs she was in now..... Hell yes.

But in any case, today was looking up. It'd be a good day she just knew it. And after she spent a few hours in the trees, she'd spent most mornings in them now adays, she'd go back to her place and get the needed supplies for him. Funny how her whole attitude on the opposite sex changed like that. Before the island the only men in her life were the ones she'd hired to do her garden, or carry her bags at that airport, or any other bit of grunt work, and the only 'boyfriends' if you could even call them that were for show or money anyway. But now things were different, SHE had changed. Billy wasn't some easy bit of cash, or pretty boy to show off. He was just...just Billy. And for the former madam now lemur, that was saying something.

Yes, Maryke was quite the pro at adapting.

Alexa Drew Summers
The confines of her duplex were nothing compared to the grandeur of the island's natural beauty. She seemed to have gotten the best of both worlds: living in luxury's lap inside her residence, and being able to have the most gorgeous views outside. She stood there for a moment, noting that no one was really around. Maybe there was a class or an event or some such going on. At any rate, she spotted a dirt path. It looked like it might be headed towards the ocean, and she was already wearing her black bikini. Maybe it was time to test the waters a bit... or at least lay on the beach. Her beach towel and other supplies were in her room, but that didn't mean she couldn't check it out!

Working her way toward the path, she started into the foliage. It was gorgeous, and the afternoon sun was beating down through the leaves to paint a pattern across her skin. She could hear the ocean as she walked along, growing ever closer with each passing step. She had to keep her head down just in case a stray rock appeared in her path. She didn't want to trip and injure a fragile ankle and be unable to do anything in her first few weeks of stay! She didn't hear much in the way of animals besides the occational bird call and a rustling in the trees from a slight breeze. This was perfect, and the shade was dense here as well, keeping the hot sun off her face until the right moment.

Maryke Jimenez

It wasn't an overbearing sound, though it was A sound. One that drew the lemur woman's attention. Two ruffed ears flickered back as she continued to hear the leaves crunching underneath the weight of something. Though it didn't sound harsh, more subtle. Instinct told her it wasn't something to be feared, but considering how great her fear of Jamal ran she wasn't stupid enough to just throw caution to the wind. She wanted to know where the sound was coming from, but not at the risk of making herself known just yet. She shifted from her postion, tail held high to keep her balance in check as she jumped onto the branch just below, stopping and listening once more.

Again she heard the sound, so she moved down onto the next branch and then another, finally a few feet above Alexa, but the trees were too thick for the human woman to have seen anything. And now Markye knew that it was just a human woman. Funny how she now knew the newbies of the island to be 'human people'. Well life was full of nasty little tricks like that, now wasn't it. But........her wet nostrils flickered and her head snapped in a tilt, much more then any human or most other animals could ever accomplish. Wait a minute.....that smell....so familar....it smelled like... like her own damn perfume. The one she'd always favored. But that couldn't be right, Maryke ran out months ago and the only other bottles in her possesion was miles away back in LA.

But, No, no that smell was distinct. And so was the noise, the human woman....then it hit her.

Son of a b***h..........she's here!

Alexa Drew Summers
She moved along slowly, taking in the exotic air of it all. Her feet continued to softly tread over the path, keeping a slow but steady cadence. She stretched her shoulders back and yawned casually, sliding her sunglasses over her eyes to protect her. Though in the jungle coverage, she was well shaded, the sun still came through in bright patches which stung her eyes.

For a moment, she thought she heard something more than the simple rustling in the breeze. She hesitated in her step, looking around. She then shrugged it off. It was probably some island rodent rushing around in the tree tops to gather nuts, or a result of one of the lovely bird calls the island had to offer. She continued on, completely oblivious to the fact that something was in the trees and it could smell her.

Maryke Jimenez

She was pissed. Maryke wasn't sure if it was some kinda of freakish act of poor luck (which she doubted) or someone trying to d**k around with her. But SOMEBODY had the audacity to bring the one person she didn't want to be stuck here with, here! She sniffed the air again. And the little rat was wearing her perfume to boot. She slinked down further, still high above Alexa but low enough to where her voice could be heard. And she definately wanted it heard.

"Alexa....." the voice cooed as Maryke leaned across the length of a branch, making sure the tree's foliage covered up most of herself, save for a few glimmers here and there. "How nice of you to come...."

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa had her mind set on the crystal clear waters she'd seen before they landed. The white sand would be hot on her toes and she couldn't wait to feel it. She bet it was super fine. She had almost completely forgotten she was here on account of Maryke, and that she was going to go visit her later that night. However, upon hearing a familiar voice, she stopped dead in her tracks.

Looking around, she frowned. She didn't see Maryke anywhere. She wasn't ahead, and she wasn't behind her, and Alexa knew she certainly couldn't be in the jungle woods. "Where are you?" She called, her muscles tensing with sudden fear. Something was wrong here, she could hear it in her madam's voice. That was the thick lacing of her sarcasm, and not her pure joy.

Maryke Jimenez

"Above you, as always," she sneered. Her words coming out like arsenic that she hoped Alexa would do nothing but choke on. She had forgotten she was only in the trees for a short while before she headed 'home' to make preperations for her meeting with Billy. Now the only thing her mind's eye was bent on was bittersweet revenge. Sure she hadn't really KNOWN Alexa to have done something wrong, other then twist her head around and confuse her. So much so that Maryke had shared an intimate moment with her debutante and muttered three words no sane woman should utter in a position such as her.

But this was after the fact. "How did you manage to find me here?" she asked, casually. As if everything was just peachy ******** king. Like they really weren't both heading to hell in a handbasket with Moreau at at the wheel.

Alexa Drew Summers
Above? Immediately, Alexa looked up so quickly her glasses nearly fell from her face. Pushing them back to their correct position, she squinted up at the treeline. She could see a few tufts of black and white fur amongst the leaves in one spot, but nothing more. She listened, wrinkling her nose in utter disgust. Valentine's Day surprise her a**! Maryke didn't even know why she was here?! Aubrey had lied to her afterall! What a dirty trick.

"I didn't find you, I assume the letter I recieved wasn't from you though." She said with utter disgust, not taking her eyes off the furry figure. "Where the hell are you?!" She yelled, gritting her teeth in frustration. She'd been duped, and as queer as it sounded, even seeing Maryke while arguing would be soothing enough to put her jittery nerves to rest, at least partially.

Maryke Jimenez

She chuckled, clearly amused. "Nope, wasn't from me. I have a few ideas of who sent it though. And knowing the pathetic waste you are, you followed," she continued. Every word, every note riddled with how bitter she was. "Oh Lexa....I thought that blind puppy act woulda outgrown you by now..."

She figured it was Aubrey, it didn't take a genius to guess it. That rotten b***h! Obviously the pregnant woman wouldn't bide over that easily. But that was fine, it was all well and good even. Maryke wouldn't let that get to her, minus the fact that she was so agitated right now. Her ruffed ears flattened against her skull and her fur stood on end while the silky black tail thrashed and beat the leaves behind her. So many thoughts were going through her brain. For one Alexa was HERE. That alone brought a whole mess of complications, not to mention the fact that some cheap shot doctor was so desperate for attention she was now screwing over Maryke to get it. Once again she reminded herself just to breath.

"I already told you where I am," she said smoothingly. In a flash she lurched and jumped forward, landing on a branch in the opposite tree, too quickly for Alexa to have made sense of the black and white blur. "Maybe if you ask nicely I'll let you sneak a peak."

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa frowned, slowly trying to piece things together. So Aubrey had something against Maryke... but what? It actually wasn't all that difficult to be angry with Maryke, considering how she acted. She supposed it made sense, and wasn't going to ask any more questions. Not about that, anyway. She ignored Maryke's taunts, knowing it was just her bitter shell from how the two had parted. She didn't mean the words, so Alexa took them as nothing more than hollow threats.

Alexa's eyes never left the creature in the trees. By now she had figured out that it was Maryke, but beyond that she wasn't sure. She knew the madam liked to wear furs, but that didn't seem to be what she was doing now. When she leapt over the younger girl's head, her eyebrows furrowed deeper together in confusion. It was simply a flash of black and white fur. Nothing more. Something was wrong here. Her attention turned back to the injection mark left on her arm from the hour previous. It was a vaccination... all shots left small side effects... she could still feel ghost tremors of chills and warm tingles, but perhaps they were real. She couldn't distinguish. By now she was growing more and more frustrated, nervous, and downright frigthened.

Maryke hated the outdoors, especially trees, so why was she in one? And why was she hopping from tree to tree like that? That was almost... inhuman of her. "Come down here, Maryke, stop shitting around." She called, mustering up her anger over her fear to speak firmly.

Maryke Jimenez

"No shitting here, dollface," she said, sounding so much like the 'old Maryke' it was hard to pinpoint that something was seriously wrong here. Oh but something WAS wrong. So very wrong. "You want me to come out and play?" she cooed, shifting her weight once more, "well who am I to disapoint my favorite employee."

She finally showed herself, first standing to her full height on top of a tree branch, her tail slowly swinging back and forth before she walked out further. She enjoyed the look on Alexa's face, very much so. Without missing a beat Maryke jumped down, still several feet up in the air before latching onto the branch with just one mishapen monkey foot and hanging upside down from it. "Hello lover," she cooed, looking at her counterpart from an twisted angle. "Miss me?"

Alexa Drew Summers
Her hidden eyes never faultered from the black and white form in the tree as Maryke continued relentlessly to taunt her. She wasn't the same Maryke Alexa had known previously. That Maryke didn't have quite this much passion and rage in her. However, after what had happened between them, it was safe to say Alexa resurfacing in this place of all places was her worst nightmare. She watched as Maryke stood from the trees.

That... that thing was not Maryke. Not the Maryke she had known, at least! A thick ruff of fur shielded her voluptuous chest, two tufts of fur not yet linked around her chin hid what Alexa could tell were not human ears, her hair was changing colors, and worst of all... she had a tail.

She watched her act, knowing that Maryke had always been an exhibitionist. However, when she caught herself with one twisted foot, she could tell that this was no act. Maryke had actually literally been changed somehow, into this thing. It resembled a lemur or other monkey.

All things considered, Alexa was horrified. The monster hanging from the tree was anything but human. For the longest time, she could only stare like a child looking at a roadkill scene. Once her scattered thoughts began to pull back together, she opened her mouth, raising her sunglasses slowly as if they were creating the illusion hanging from the tree before her. "What... what.... what happened?"

Maryke Jimenez

"What happened?" She sneered, still hanging above Alexa, "Isn't that easy to figure out? YOU happened!" With that she jumped down completely flipping and landing just mere inches from where the younger girl stood. her tail raised near her head though kept the thrashings that showed her agitation.

"You see, I've finallly figured it out," she continued, twisting her maw into an angry grimace of sorts. The lemur teeth showing full. It was only her eyes, those still human eyes that showed who she was underneath the muzzle and fur. Yet those eyes also made the change that much more horrifying. "If it wasn't for the s**t YOU pulled I wouldn't even be in this mess!" oh she was mad now, and she wanted so badly to hurt Alexa. Hurt her and kill her.

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa was beyond frightened now. She felt her chest tightening around her painfully pounding heart. She wasn't sure what was worse for her: The fact that Maryke was an animal--monster--now, or that it was her fault. And it actually was her fault! When Maryke jumped down from the tree, Alexa took stiff, horrified shuffles backwards. Before long, an exposed root tripped her and she fell to her back, still trying to scramble away from her.

Those eyes. Those same hazels that Maryke had possessed back in LA. They had the same fire and rage in them, the same depths. To think that for one night she had stared into those eyes, caressed that once-human cheek, and told her a secret she could never tell anyone else! The thought repulsed her. She felt sick to her stomach; she just wanted to run. She closed her eyes, burying her face in her arms as she sat there, now balled up in the dirt on her side to avoid eye contact with the woman.

In any other instance, she would have fought back. She would have fought back hard. But she just couldn't. The tremors and shudders running through her body, accelerated by fear, were too much for her and all she could do was lay there and whimper, feeling her eyes fill with tears. Only one person could get her like this now that she was older, and that was Maryke. She hadn't lost her touch.

Maryke Jimenez

She took advantage of this new viewpoint and rushed forward, pinning Alexa's hands above her head in one quick swoop. "So here we are again," she cluckled, hitting her tongue against the roof of her maw. "Isn't this the way our fighting always ends, huh doll. Me on top? You crying your ******** eyes out?"

She narrowed her hazels, gripping her hold tighter, though still conscious of the fact that someone might be watching. The last thing she wanted was to be kissing dirt long enough for this b***h to get away. "Do you think I'm stupid," she growled, though it came out in a strange odd sort of bark. "Do you think I wouldn't know?"

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa stared up at Maryke, now pinned on her back and exposed. Her hoodie was askew, exposing her bathing suit fully. She blinked back remaining tears, glaring up at Maryke. Alexa balled her hands into fists, relieving some of the tension around her slender joints. She was completely lost, her humanity seemed all but gone. Still, even though she was absolutely appalled and horrified about the entire situation, there was a soft spot somewhere in her.

It was telling her to do something she would never consciously admit to doing, but she did it anyway. Dragging one leg out from under Maryke, she got it around her and pushed her weight into it, getting Maryke to roll with her. Keeping one leg under her, cupping her lower back, she got Maryke onto her back and straddled her. Pressing her bare hands into the ground, she didn't let the monkey-like fingers release their grip the whole time. She glared down at her with a serious, intense gaze. "No." She said. By this time, she hadn't accepted what Maryke was, but rather knew it was still the same woman underneath. Something in her heart had a weakness for her, she couldn't fight it. "This is how it always ends." She hissed the words into the lemur woman's ear, knowing if she was really a lemur, she could catch the sound and the hidden tone of sweetness in it.

Alexa grinned slightly to herself before pulling back, staring into her eyes with another serious silence. They both knew she was right; she knew it somewhere in herself. It was just a matter of admitting it.

Maryke Jimenez

Maryke laughed, high pitched almost cracking. It was like all the life had been sucked from her and she was at her breaking point. "That right?" Of course she could get free at any time. Easily over power the other and get out of this unwanted grasp. But she was bating her time, more nefarious things displayed in her brain.

"Did you ever stop to think that for one SECOND I never meant what I said?" she hissed, "Whatever it was, whatever you THOUGHT it was....it was a mistake. A big ******** mistake." Finally she pulled herself up with ease, her maw spewing out the hatred and bitterment that was still leftover in her hurt. Hell her whole life she'd known nothing but pain. Everyone needed an outlet.

"I know what you did," she said, moving about so that she was was in a squat her tail twisting around to slowly slink towards Alexa. "You turned me in........DIDN'T YOU?"

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa could feel it, as if she was grasping something that was barely there anymore. Maryke was slipping. Slipping again. Last time, Alexa had managed to pull her out of it, but last time she was human. Now she was somehow transformed into this being. She didn't know how as of yet, but she knew it happened to her. This was a research facility... they must've done something to her. She just couldn't wrap her head around what.

She sat back as Maryke slipped out from under her, her bare legs pressed into the dirt. She watched her for a moment or two. No, this was wrong. She was just trying to break her, and she knew how to do it. Damnit, Alexa had to stop listening. She knew it was a lie. What she'd felt, what she'd seen in those all-too familiar hazels... the snuggles, cuddles... everything... that was real. Maryke couldn't lie her way out of this one. Before she could accuse her of lying, she was cut off.

Turned her in? Why would she turn her in. She was so surprised, her gaze softened for a moment. "What?" She tried to piece together what exactly Maryke was trying to say. Once she figured it out, she froze for a moment. How to work around this... how to convince her it wasn't as bad as she thought. "I did not turn you in." She said, and it was the truth. She hadn't turned her in or given her up... only said that Maryke had been involved with Mark Winters. She hadn't told them where she was, what she did... not even her last name as far as she could remember, but that was a long time ago. Her memory was fuzzy.

Maryke Jimenez

"Don't ******** around with me you little s**t!" The words came out harsh, more so then even she knew they would. But damnit she was mad! She had every right to be! It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out, that before her was the reason for all her troubles. Alexa was the ONLY one who could have given the FBI ANY kind of information, other then Mark or Maryke themselves. And that was pointless as it was their a** the boys in blue were gunning for.

So it had to be Alexa. And nothing else would change her mind. "You RUINED my life!" she spat, now standing up. She balled up her fists, and her monkey feet even. Her eyes burned in intensity and all she wanted to do was to hurt her, hurt for every damn thing that had went wrong since her 'sweet escape'. Throw love to the side. She hadn't known if she ever loved the girl, sure she'd said it that one solitary time. But that didn't mean she MEANT it. And nothing, and nobody was going to convince her that she did.

"you ruined my ******** life!" she repeated, all the curses shot out to show and exagerate her anger. Her tail began to jerk away from alexa and then straight up in the air just as Maryke swung a fist down upon the girl while her teeth were beared with her feet still clenched. She did it again and went to do it a third time before she suddenly twitched. Her body stilled and her eyes rolled to the back of her head before she landed back down on the ground with a heavy thump.

Clearly unconscious.

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa's eyes widened and filled with fear once again. Oh s**t. Maryke was coming after her. The anger in her was building, consuming her. Why, oh, why had Alexa come here? Poor Maryke had fallen subject to their research project, and Alexa might be more cannon fodder. And what was worse, Maryke was losing all sight of humanity and the rage was burning white-hot within her. Her body language screamed danger, but Alexa was frozen.

She couldn't run from her, not when she had the overriding feeling inside to run to her, capture her in her arms like she had that one night when the stress building up on her was too much for her to handle. Only now, this was Alexa's fault. All this trauma, all this passion and anger was her doing. Maryke was teetering on the edge, and Alexa was most likely the final push into oblivion. She watched her with shock as she actually raised a fist.

Sure, they'd physically fought before, but it always ended happy... at least, that one time it had. Those other times... no. She had managed that one time, their last time, to pull Maryke to say what they had both been feeling since the very beginning; that morning after the awful night Alexa spent in the rain. No matter what Maryke said, it was a lie. Alexa knew that this feeling that engulfed them and pushed them so far was love. Not passion, not anger, but love.

And she was so consumed by this revelation, and so focussed on convincing herself of this, that she didn't see the punches coming. One connected solidly across the arch of her cheekbone, and she fell back, snarling as the searing burn of the blow began to set in. The second missed, due to how she had retreated after the first. At the third attempt, Alexa's sudden flare of anger was sedated. Suddenly, Maryke was convulsing--and it looked painful. Before Alexa could figure out what was happening, Maryke was unconscious on the floor as if something had shocked her.

Great... what now? She couldn't just leave her here in the middle of the path. Someone would find her! Something bad might happen. If Maryke had been living up in the trees, she would be exposed here. Mustering up her strength, she rose and brushed herself off. She took Maryke under the arms--the only way she could manage--and began dragging her dead weight toward the clearing of the sand. Maybe a little ocean water would revive her. The going was slow, and Maryke was heavy while unconscious. Alexa settled for halfway down the beach, on the sand. She flopped down, exhausted by the effort. Maybe she could catch her breath for a moment before fetching the cool water to bring her back to her senses.

No Rest for the Wicked (Continued)

Maryke Jimenez

She was someplace else. Some other time, some other feeling other then the unrequited anger she had been upon loosing consciouness. Back in her loft in the city, the bright lights peaking in through an open window. Soft carrasses, a familar feminine scent. Maryke was in heaven. But it wasn't because this was a decidely female quality about her, it was because...well she couldn't place it. Some inner feeling. Some sense of rightness in all the wrong she'd ever know. But then suddenly things began to fade away, change entirely. The scene of her loft began to distory and deteriote until she was cursed with the bright natural light of the sun. The city noises, the car honks, sirens, and people all faded into crashes and waves and bird song.

Two hazel eyes popped open as a low moan escaped her maw. She was almost at peace. Almost. But then bitter reality sank in. She titled her head, staring around stupidly until she realized Alexa was staring down at her. She couldn't say anything as her jaw was still lagging, but coud only stare up at the woman she hated.

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa leaned forward, her hands on her knees as she caught her breath in the hot and humid tropical atmosphere. She'd have to get used to this, she supposed. She looked down at Maryke, who was out cold for a good few minutes. It was then that she really got to take the time and study her. There was fur covering almost all of her smooth, perfect skin. She studied the distorted facial features--most closely the muzzle. That mus've been painful to grow into, with the bones contorting like they did.

And it was just as she was about to lean in and touch the fur that Maryke woke up. Seeing her stir before she opened her eyes, Alexa pulled back quickly and simply stood over her. For a moment or two she stared back down at Maryke, amost as stupidly as she had been looking up at her. After a while, she opened her mouth. "...Guess you couldn't handle being so wound up, hmmm?" She asked teasingly, a familiar sparkle lighting her eye.

Maryke Jimenez

"No," she said quietly, sputtering the reply before slowly sitting up. Her head was swimming. She had tried to keep herself in check but anger won over any ounce of good sense in her. Another moan escaped her maw. She must look like some damn freakshow to Alexa. Just great. Pushing herself up completely she finally to her feet, albiet on shaky faltering legs. ******** labs. She hated this place, hated the people, every goddamn thing about this ******** island! Damn, her head was killing her. Not like it matter because..

"we're stuck here," she muttered, the growls and hisses still laced within her vocals. "All of us. You, me, every damn person here. You think I just can't handle it?" she laughed, loudly, "No honey. I got them workin' my brain," she said waving towards herself. "This is no island paradise. It's a ******** labcage, and we're the lab rats. All of this..." again she waved once more, indicating her now almost fully animal body. "It's going to happen to you too, maybe worse.....hopefully worse."

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa was going to offer to help her up. Even if Maryke seemed to be hating her, and Alexa was (at least at some much deeper level) suffering from the trauma of all of this, she still cared for her enough to be concerned. When she got to her feet, Alexa was still concerned but she kept it to herself. No need to show her too much emotion. That would be a big mistake on her part. She'd learned by now that Maryke would use every ounce of passion the younger girl had against her.

She froze again, listening to Maryke's words. Someone... someone had triggered that bout of unconsciousness? But... how? She frowned, taking a step back in disbelief. She could see that the testing her was certainly cruel and unusual, especially with the ghastly things they had done to Maryke... but everyone was going to turn into something? Even her? "But... but how?" She asked quietly, her eyes wide with fear. She suddenly longed very much for nothing more than a long soak in the tub in her room to clear her thoughts. This was piling on underneath, and the storm within her was just waiting to break loose.

Maryke Jimenez

"You're talking to a girl that barely made it out of highschool," she countered gracing her shoulders with a small shrug. "I don't know. I really don't even care how they do it. But obviously they can.....I mean," she waved towards herself. "This isn't the latest fashion trend."

She sighed and moved away, her tail slowly swishing back and forth still in its usual place near her head. "Apparently there's some ******** up doctor that runs this place. Good ole boy with a curiosity streak and too much money to burn. We're just ******** lab rats, Lexy," she repeated before that devilish smile she bore when irritated and vengeful returned. "Though I am going to take some satisfaction in seeing you suffer like I did....and believe you me, cutie....you're going to WISH I killed you back home after the first change hits you."

Alexa Drew Summers
For some reason, her counter comforted her somehow. That careless shrug of a shoulder was so characteristic of her madam. She was relieved more than horrified, but only because she couldn't be horrified. Not yet. It wasn't real yet. Oh, no, after... that night, when the dreams--nightmares--consumed her, then it would be real. But now, she felt comforted in the fact that Maryke was still herself somewhere underneath the fur. She almost argued that the fashion statement she was making was indeed vogue, but she bit her tongue metaphorically speaking.

For a moment, she could feel that warm connection start to flow again between them as she watched the lemur girl move, the tail swaying as if it was a natural part of her. Granted now it was, but it almost seemed to Alexa as if nothing had changed. The outside, yes, but the inside was the same. And then, of course, Maryke had to cover up the glimpse she suddenly became aware of. With a scowl, Alexa folded her arms across her chest and turned her head away. She had even called her Lexy. It bothered her that Maryke was so deeply angered by the chain of events. Who wouldn't be, really... but Alexa wasn't going to fully believe it yet. She needed more substantive proof than Maryke like that. "I'm quite happy where I am, thank you." She said curtly in retort to Maryke's threat. "And, by the way, I don't even think it'll happen to me. Lab rat or not, it couldn't be THAT painful, even if it did happen. Nice try, Maryke. This is going to be cake."

Spoken like a true woman in denial.

Maryke Jimenez

She chuckled, oh now that bit was amusing. "You see me standing here, fur, tail n' all......and yet you think YOU'LL be the one spared, the one with the ******** brains to get out of this?" She laughed again, her tail thrashing back and forth like it had been during the previous spout of anger. "Trust me....everyone tries. Everyone thinks they'll be okay. Hell, I was ready to give up everydamn thing I owned just to get in a phone call. And look how that turned out?"

She suddenly stopped, her hazels lighting up as if she just now was remembering something. ".......what happened after I left....speaking of?"

Alexa Drew Summers
Her eyes never left Maryke as she went on her little rant. Yes, everyone must have gone through this same stage, and Alexa found this logical. However even though this made perfect sense, it still seemed like a fine belief system to follow. Afterall, Alexa was sexy and young and she was sure there were a lot of studs around. If this was a research facility, some people might be guinea pigs later than others, so maybe there were still some human men around to toy with.

The way that Maryke was acting made this out to be the end of the world. There was no way it could be that bad. With a room as nice as she had, there had to be something good within the island's boundaries, and certainly they'd be treated in the highest regard. Or, at least, she hoped so.

At Maryke's sudden question, Alexa instinctively shrunk back some. It was like she was going back to being under Maryke, metaphorically speaking. "Nothing happened after you left."

Maryke Jimenez

"Oh really?" She said, huffing a bit. "So that ISN'T my perfume I smell?" She leaned closer, taking in a big whiff. "The clothes...the sunglasses, oh please Alexa. What? You think you're me now?" she laughed at that, "Oh I'm sure you just LOVED me gone. Taking over all that money, all those girls. It was a mistake to give you the position you had. I didn't know you were going to back stab me."

Her tail twitched again and she wanted nothing more then to beat Alexa into a blood pulp. But the 'fool me once...' logic was still playing around inside her brain. Convulsing and then passing out afterwards wasn't exactly the best feeling in the world. "You wanted me, but you couldn't have me....so you became me, that it? How very soap opera..."

Alexa Drew Summers
She listened, but it was half-hearted. She knew that Maryke wouldn't accept that nothing had happened, but Alexa hadn't meant absolutely nothing had happened. She just didn't want to tell her about the whole stink that was going down back on the West coast. It didn't matter anyway; now they were both trapped here. Rather than answering, she turned her back for a moment, composing herself. The words and comments she made stung Alexa, cutting deep and she needed a minute to collect before she answered the real question at hand.

"After you left I waited to hear from you. I got the note you left in your loft, but you never called. Your cell was dead, so I was worried something had happened to you. I ran in your absence because I had to, not because I wanted to. I thought it was what you would have wanted. Such a big empire shouldn't just crumble to the ground because of an unfortunate circumstance. Yes, I took over for you, but I didn't become you." She turned back again, giving her a warning glare. "I would never do something so childish as that. Yeah, I wanted you, but why the hell would I want to be you?! I like being me, Alexa. Being you wouldn't fulfill any fantasy I ever dreamed."

She took a pause, her eyes dropping as her gaze softened. She took in a deep breath, letting it out in a slow sigh. "The FBI came after me, so when I got a note from what I thought was you, I was beyond excited and relieved. I guess that was a false hope afterall..." she trailed off, focussing on some far off speck in her memory, imitated by a single grain of sand far off on the beach's shore.

Maryke Jimenez

Maryke listened to the whole shebang, arms slowly crossing over her large furry chest as she did. She let a few moments pass once Alexa was finished without saying anything, only making a small clucking nose as her tongue hit the roof of her maw. She had figured it went down like that. It seemed like the 'Alexa thing to do'. Afterall the younger girl had always been quick to please her madam, in more ways then one. Which was good and bad all at the same time. Most of the time, however, the attention was unwanted. Her feelings towards Alexa were too complicated for her to ever want to experience them. With Billy they were different. Easier to figure out.

But that suddenly made her think of him and slow smile crept to her maw. "Well here we are then," she said smoothinly, walking up and going up behind Alexa to rest two blackened hands on her shoulders. "Lucky for us though, I already found someone else..."

Alexa Drew Summers
Alexa tensed up immensely during those few moments of silence. She knew that Maryke would have to falter somehow now in her otherwise flawless assault. She saw it in those moments of silence. She was thinking about what Alexa had said, which meant that she'd won. Yes, of course, Maryke would try for another stab, but in those soft, subtle moments she knew that she had accomplished her goal and the seed of thought had been planted.

When she came around behind Alexa, a warm shudder ran up her spine and she closed her eyes. The hands on her shoulders, though slightly deformed by the transformation, still felt warm and familiar. She practically melted under them. Then Maryke went and dropped the bomb she knew was coming. "Oh." She said simply, eyes opening as her body stiffened again.

Maryke Jimenez

Maryke knew what she was doing, perfectionaltely so. She was a pro at this and it wasn't that hard considering how badly Alexa had it up for her. She wanted to keep stringing the girl along, hurt her but still leave that little tiny inkling that things might be okay between them. It was in her favor, Alexa could be a useful ally. She was easily manipulated and she had a background of sharp wits, albiet lacking of common sense. But she still was academically smarter then Maryke. That always worked to the younger girl's advantage.

So just to give her a taste, just one more tiny taste of what she was missing the lemur woman moved closer to the shoulder. So much so that her breath would be hot and heavy against the other's neck and ear. "Mhmmmm, he's a good guy..." she whispered in a low husk and of course she didn't mention he was an ex coke head and an octopus. She didn't need to know that. "I'm on my way to ******** him right now. And you can think about that when you're alone in your bed tonight, me with him........and not you." She leaned back, going for the kill as intended. "I'll see you around Lexy."

With that she sauntered off, her tail swishing back and forth slowly behind her as she went.

Alexa Drew Summers
Her single moment of anticipated pleasure turned to dust now, Maryke seemed to keep at it. Of course, Maryke couldn't leave without having the last laugh. Alexa had long since figured out how the now-lemur girl worked, so she wasn't concerned. It was just a facade like all other superficial things she did. It would fade away in time and only sweet feelings would be left. The hard part was getting her down to that point. She winced slightly as Maryke's beast breath caressed her neck and teased her hair. She wondered idly if he was another person turned animal like Maryke herself. According to her crazy former acquaintence, everyone here was.

She still didn't believe it. Not yet.

And fine. Maryke was going to use that threat, then Alexa would turn around and reciprocate it! If Maryke was going to go ******** some special man of hers, Alexa would just have to find someone else. Of course, this revenge plot was only a stray thought and not a hell-bent plan. She watched Maryke as she strolled off, the haughty sway still in those hips, to spite their slight change since they last encountered eachother. All in all, Alexa was confused. What had just happened? She certainly had a lot to think about.

Maybe the beach could wait.

An Afternoon Drink

Thus far, Newt had had very little success with his home made security system. He wanted real string. He wanted real tools. He wanted real supplies. He had figured out several simple machines and simple mechanics he'd been able to fudge with things he'd found around the jungle, but his tinkering had been far easier before he had... The frog man sighed, not wanting to think about it. It had been a mistake. He shouldn't have done those things, but... but he couldn't help but admit that they had felt good. He had been angry and had expressed it. He would have been proud of himself if he wasn't so mortified by the repercussions of those actions. But HE. Newton Alexander Filinas. Had attacked TWO guards! Alright, so he had simply frightened the first with the sharpened toothbrush to the shoulder, but he was confident the second's face would be scarred for life. Razorblade fisticuffs would do that.

It was a dreary, overcast day that threatened a tropical shower at any minute, but the frog didn't care. What was a little more water? He didn't bother with most of the clothes the labs had been oh so kind to grant him when they had stripped his duplex out of everything, keeping mostly to his grubby, muddy stained swim trunks. He knew what he wanted on a day like this. He had hopped about to try to find Liamh, but the plant-man had appeared to be busy with... other friends, and Newt was far too shy to flag him down.

And so, the frog man had hopped towards the beach bar on his own to battle with his depression.

Alexa sighed softly. It had been days since she'd gotten out and done something. She'd been on this island for what... almost a week now, and she had only met one person. Granted, it was the person she hated and loved the most all in the same instant, but still. That was pathetic. She let Maryke win. She had surrendered to the fear the island had given her. Locked away, she'd been eating whatever she could find in the fridge of her duplex and staring out the window at the often cloudless sky. Now, the clouds had finally returned and she felt it was a miserable enough day to actually go outside. Maybe she could get a drink to calm her thoughts. She set out quietly, hoping to be hidden from any other monstrosities that might be walking around. Walking down the path towards the beach bar, her mind was far, far away. She just wanted to get there, grab a bottle or two, and head back to mope-ville.

Newt knew very little about drinking, and so had contented himself with a beer. He stay slumped over the bar, staring at the bottle with a frown. It was cold, American style. He had tasted beer before, curiously tested his father's when he had been sixteen and had.... gotten into a lot of trouble for it, and had never tried it again, but what he could remember tasted a sight better than this. Maybe it was the fact he didn't have any real taste buds anymore. That might have been it. Either way, the green lump of a frog man didn't notice someone else coming down the path.

As the trees opened up to reveal a pensive ocean and gray, dull sand, she spotted another at the bar. She stopped dead in her tracks, her fear seizing her. Another one of the freak show was here! Maryke hadn't been lying to her after all! And... this one looked like a giant frog. She shuddered, then mentally pulled herself together. After all, she was Alexa Drew Summers, who feared no man nor woman. This was no different! Just slightly... slimier... Swallowing her lingering fears, she pushed herself out of the clearing. As she approached, she called out, not wanting to startle the frog. After all, it might be a hungry beast hybrid with teeth and a carnivorous appetite. "Hey," she offered as she stepped behind the bar and got herself a bottle to match his own.

"Ah-!" Newt glanced up at the sudden appearance of the young woman, his wide eyes wobbling as he nearly fell off of his stool in a startled jump, despite her attempts to not surprise him. A human! It was a human! He hadn't seen a human in... since... well, months! Scrambling to crawl back on top of his stool in a low, nervous amphibious crouch, the frog-man peered up over the bar and wobbled in his Welsh stammer, "I... I... ah... y-y-you're... aren't... how... er... " Oh please oh please oh please let her already be knowledged of the island! Sayuri hadn't believed him, taking him for a fool, and Seth... well, Seth definitely knew now. Newt didn't like being one of the first to meet a new human, or "Normie" as the octopus man liked to shout angrily from the lake. It made him feel like a monster. "KrrKIT!" he added, throat inflating to power the croak.

She cocked a brow at his odd mannerisms. Was that the frog speaking, or was that just him? At any rate, he didn't have any sharp teeth so she no longer felt in danger. Popping the top off her bottle, she took a long swig and gulped it down with a refreshed 'ahhh' sound. It had been a while, she mused. She needed that. She set the bottle down, wondering what he was trying to say, and nearly giggling at the croak. "I'm human. Yeah, I know, and you're a frog man."

He glanced to the side, looking thoroughly embarrassed. At least it hadn't been "I'm human, and you're a janitor." Maybe it was the half a beer he had already poured into his wide lipless mouth, but he gave a quiet little giggle at that thought. That was a bright side, wasn't it? Never, ever again. He wasn't quite sure what to say, shyly glancing back up again to look her over. She was pretty, he supposed, but not as pretty as Natsumi had been... at least in his opinion. Few girls were as pretty as Natsumi in the frog man's mind. He glanced down again as soon as he realized he had been staring, lifting a webbed hand to nervously try to straighten his crazed, damp scraggly locks of remnant hair.

She came around the bar, watching him without really letting on. She took a seat, setting the glass bottle down against the wood with a soft clunk. She giggled when he looked away. She got that sort of reaction a lot, so it wasn't a big surprise for her, nor was it something he should be embarrassed about. She chose not to possibly embarrass him further by explaining that whole notion. Instead, she offered him her name. "I'm Alexa, and you are...?"

He glanced up, hairless brows furrowed nervously before he politely offered her his hand, "Ah... N-n-new-new-newton. Er... um... " Remember what Thom had taught you, you stupid frog! His other hand went behind his back to try to keep rhythm with his fingertips, "Newton... Filinas, M-miss..." He managed, looking proud of himself for saying it.

She giggled as he offered his hand to her. "You don't have to shake my hand to say hello." She noticed that he was proud of almost completely dispelling his stutter when he said his full name. She smiled a bit, finding him quirky but also quite charming, in a giant frog man kind of way... perhaps he just amused her. She wasn't really sure. "So... they turned you into a frog, I see..." she started, her eyes for the first time really truly analyzing his body. It was impressive that they could do this sort of thing to humans. It was more impressive that he could still talk and remembered all his human manners to spite the changes. That must be difficult... being human on the inside but animal on the outside... she shook her head a bit, her eyes finally resting back at his froggy face. "...does it hurt?"

His bulbous eyes blinked, brows furrowing at the question, "Ah... er... wh-wh-what? Er... r-right n-now? Or... ah...? And.. er... um..." He fidgeted, falling back into his awkward stammer, "I'm... n-not entirely d-done yet..." His face was still... almost human. More human than frog, anyway. At least it didn't particularly look like a frog to him, lacking any sort of snout. "I... I s-s-still have... ah... so-so-so-some hair," He added as though that was something to be proud of.

"Oh," she glanced away, then back again. She could see that he was still partially human. Perhaps Maryke was different because she was turning into a lemur, and lemurs were much like humans. Her fear was beginning to build up inside again. She didn't know what it was like, but she knew it was coming for her. No one knew how long, or why, or what she'd turn into, but she knew it was coming anyway. Anatomy changes as drastic as Newt's had to have hurt, especially the fusing of his arm and leg bones. And if that hadn't happened yet, she knew it probably would eventually, and it would hurt. Then again, maybe it didn't hurt. Bones fused naturally as a baby grew, so maybe it was unpainful? But babies had a long time to form, and bones had a long time to fuse... and these changes seemed to happen rapidly. "The chaning..." she said, her voice suddenly lax of all its strength and personality. "Do those hurt? How... how do they happen?"

"Oh..." He swallowed, glancing to his beer bottle before timidly picking it up to give his hands something to fiddle with as he spoke, "Er... y-yes... th-they... they d-do... ah... and.. um... w-well... th-they... wh-while we're... sl-sleeping or... or wh-whenever er... our b-b-bo-bodies have adjusted to the chem-chem-chem-chemicals I th-think it was... er... s-something like th-that... I... I have one l-left. Ch-change I mean..." Then there really would be no going back, would there?

"Oh..." she trailed off, her eyes dropping to some distant speck of sand far down the beach's shoreline. So, they hurt. That was wonderful. She'd be tortured for only God knew how long, and turn into an animal. She hoped it wasn't something horrible. Or something with an exoskeleton... or an invertebrate. She felt sick suddenly, as if her beer was some sort of poisoning agent, but she swallowed the nausea. She wasn't changed yet, so at least she had some time to enjoy herself. That's what it was all about, after all. Living for the now. Right? Heh. "So..." she started again, after a lengthy silence, "How'd you end up here?"

The frog-man glanced up, back to his drink and then back again before pouring the rest of his beer into his wide, froggish maw. He winced as he swallowed, eyes watering even with the watered down piss they offered here. "I... ah..." He thought about it. Eyes calculating for a moment before he tried to straighten up some and look impressive. "I.... I... I w-was t-tricked. I... I used to... to..." Again, he thought, creative juices sloshing about. Something more impressive than "Yeah, I worked here for five years until they grew sick of me and turned me into a frog." He cleared his throat, giving another froggish croak before speaking, "I... w-w-was... a... er... mech-mech-mechanical engineer." That sounded impressive enough, right?

She looked him over, again cocking a brow, this time accompanied by a smirk. This guy was an engineer? Well... he looked geeky enough. She had a suspicion he might be fabricating, but she decided to buy it for now. "I guess they trick a lot of people." She said nonchalantly, taking another sip of her beer without so much as a blink. "They made me think my old boss wanted me to come here to hide from the FBI." No use hiding her past if she was stuck here, right? Right.

"Y-your old b-b-boss?" That made the frog man lower himself down in his crotch to hide between his long skinny legs. "Ah... w-who...?" FBI? Were they really on the island or had that been part of the fabrication? Newt was a gullible man, not because he wasn't smart, but because of a poor sense of judgment regarding certain things without adequate data. Was it that terrible tiger-man? He seemed FBI-run worthy. Or that horrible octopus, he wouldn't be surprised, but he hardly seemed like a leader to the Frog.

She nodded, leaning back against the bar counter. A small sigh escaped her as she studied a nearby palm tree. Hmmm. So, life on this island couldn't be all that bad, all things considered. Her fears had been confirmed at least, so the uncertainty of what was going to happen was no longer present. However, that still left the fact that it was going to be painful. She pushed it from surfacing again, and glanced toward him when he asked who her boss was. "You probably don't know her," she said, brushing it off almost. "Name's Maryke, she's a real b***h when she wants to be."

"Ma-ma-ma-ma-maryke?" His face did light up with recognition, "Oh... ah... Y-yes, I.. I know her! I d-did a lot of..." He stopped himself. "I... er... g-gave her a hand... w-with some things... KrrKIT!" He wouldn't exactly call it a friendship. Morea like... a friendly... toleration.

"You know her?" She asked, looking genuinely surprised. She figured Maryke wouldn't mess with this guy. He looked like as a human he would have been thin and lanky and not all that attractive or useful. Then again, if he was a handy man like he said, Maryke probably talked him into doing her a favor of some sort... that was so like her. Soon her facial expression shifted to reflect her slightly annoyed thoughts. "Well apparently it was all a lie, she didn't want me to come and stay with her after all. In fact, she told me she found someone better than me. Some guy..." She wrinkled her nose, somewhat disgusted by the notion. Perhaps because Mayrke had made that choice, Alexa was clinging to a false hope. However, no matter what way this whole thing went down, Alexa was STILL clinging. She wasn't about to let go.

An Afternoon Drink (Continued)

Newt's eyes widened at the thought, huddling down in his stool as he gave a timid ribbit. "Y-you... ah... " His voice was high and nervous, "M-m-m-mm-mean M-mr. Wuh-woo... Mr. Woodrow?"

"Who?" she cocked her head to the side. Obviously given her appearance, she hadn't been around very long, and didn't know very many people. She completely ignored the fact that he was huddling down between his amphibian legs as if scared by something she had said. Generally she would have been more keenly observing him, but right now she was intrigued by this new information. "Who is he...?"

"Wh-who is who?" He quivered, allowing himself to play stupid as a large insect fluttered in out of the drizzle, drawn by the light of the bar.

Alexa subconsciously pressed closer to the bar, having just now noticed the light misting coming down around them. At least there was shelter here so she wouldn't get wet. Unfortunately she couldn't avoid that forever if she wanted to go home tonight and sleep in her own bed. Well, the bed that was now hers, anyway. Again, she praised the island head honcho for giving her a nice room. She was sure, just by the looks of Newt, that not everyone had a room as nice as hers. Perhaps he didn't even have one to begin with. Her brows furrowed more deeply when he said this, decidedly ignoring her question. "This Mr. Woodrow guy. Who is he?"

"Oh... ah... I... Er... I d-don't know, I've n-never re-re-really... he j-just... ah... I th-think he lives in the lake..." He kept still, watching as the beetle flitted about the lamp before lowering itself down towards the bar, drawn by the sweet smell of spilled mixed drinks. It wasn't within range for but a moment before his tongue arched through the air to snap it back to his mouth with a sharp crack and a crunch.

She wondered if this stutter was constant, or if it got worse when he was lying. It seemed to be thickening and impeding his speech more. Just as she opened her mouth go question him further, his tongue shot out and captured the beetle. She cringed at the crunch, looking away and holding her stomach. That was... just disgusting. She took a few labored swallows, eyes squeezed shut, before she could manage to straighten up again and try to look at him. She had almost completely forgotten her question due to the sudden onset, but after a moment it returned. "So where is this lake?"

"Wh-what?" The frog blinked. He had gotten past being embarrassed about his eating habits around the others who were more understanding, but had forgotten how new this girl was and immediately sunk down, "Ah... oh, I'm... I'm s-sorry... er.. about th-that, I j-just... its' automatic s-sometimes... I m-mean... I've b-been avoiding the... the caf-cafeteria so... so c-catching my own f-food and... um..."

"It's... okay." She said, her face still somewhat pallored at the thought of him simply ingesting a flying, moving insect. Living bugs on their own were disgusting enough for her. She assumed that he'd know that, especially after meeting Maryke. She wasn't sure why, but she had a feeling if Maryke had met him, he should know that their kind wasn't really... liken to bugs. She cleared her throat, brushing her bangs from her face. "Where's this lake?"

"H-how... how c-could you m-miss it? Have... have you n-nuh-nuh-not b-been to the vuh-vuh-village?" Just how new was this girl? He swallowed his snack, wobbling a little on his chair. He felt he was ready for a second beer.

Alexa had already pushed her half-empty bottle away from her hand, afraid to drink it for fear of seeing it more than once. "I've been to the village but I haven't really looked around..." She looked down, somewhat embarrassed for the first time in a long time. He said it as if the lake was impossible to miss, and maybe it was. Especially if it was where this Mr. Woodrow lived. Of course, this meant he must be a water-bound creature. Another shiver ran up her spine. Maryke was with some lake-dwelling... thing? She wrinkled her nose.

"It's p-pa-pa-part of the village," Newt explained, hopping down to the ground with a plop before turning to hop around to the other side of the bar to root about for something else. "There's... new duh-duh-duplexes built on them. It's re-re-really lovely... with the j-jungle on the other side, they m-must have a woo-woo-wonderful view." He was almost jealous. He was an aquatic thing, wasn't he? But no, he had had to convert his own duplex himself, hadn't he? Stolen hose and pipes and altered plumbing, it had all been very complicated and taken him the better part of a month to sort out, and still he had been constantly battling with it to keep it functional. He missed it.

She nodded silently, understanding now. Damn, was she blind? She needed to pay more attention when she was walking around this place. It wasn't just about the impending doom, her duplex, and the beach! She needed to see this lake... and this Mr. Woodrow. But first, was it true? Newt seemed to be hiding something, as if he knew more but wasn't going to share. She knew she could pump him for information if she turned on a little more charm, but she just wasn't up for it. Maryke was ruthless enough to do it, but Alexa rarely if ever resorted to using her sexual appeal for information. So, instead she would pay her darling simian friend a visit. Duplex #56, she knew. She'd just... swing by... and interrogate the lemur woman who was formerly her boss and perhaps more. "I should be heading back..." she said, almost rushed. She slipped her hood over her head. "It looks like the storm will get worse before it gets better, anyway." She added, trying to justify her leaving so suddenly. It certainly wasn't Newt's fault, and she didn't want him to think she didn't' like him.

"Hrmm?" He peeped up over the counter in a little bouncing motion before wobbling straight upright to his near seven feet in height, searching about to see what he could see stored behind the bar. What if there was a corkscrew? A church key? Anything useful he could... borrow.

She hopped off of the stool and turned her head, looking back over her shoulder at the now extremely tall frog. "Unlike you, I don't really like water. It's bad for my hair and all..." She said, offering him a slight smile and hoping that he'd understand. Underneath that fake politeness, she was already far far ahead, entering Maryke's duplex and questioning the lemur woman on this man who lived in a lake, or a water house, or whatever it was they had to live in. "It was nice meeting you..." She added, watching him for a moment to see if he'd be upset by her leaving.

"Ah-" He only just seemed to notice she had started to leave, and immediately disappeared behind the bar to peer around the side of it at her in his shy little crouch, "Er... y-you... as well..." People never seemed to like to talk to him for very long. He figured it was the stutter. He hoped he hadn't said too much- Maryke would have his hide.

"See you around." She said with a smooth wave of her hand. She turned and started off into the rain, her flip flops making a wet clacking sound as they came off the beach with each passing step. Off to see the madam and get some answers, she thought. She wondered what the strange frog man was up to, and why he was hiding so much. It wasn't like there was anything worth hiding here. Everything you did outside this world was gone forever, and everything inside this world was everyone's business. At least, that's how Alexa wanted it to work. She knew that couldn't be entirely true, but she hoped that at least now that she had a name, she'd be able to work some more information out of Maryke, and maybe solve this puzzling situation.
