Zaphiro didn't know exactly how to react to that comment. From the sound of what the mare had just said, he got the distinct impression that she was going to ask Safi to parent the foal...which was just strange. But then again, what did he know?

Looking up from the basket to the mare, Zaphiro gave her a thoughtful look. "Well, we can't leave it alone, that much is for sure...and I have to find Safi. But we shouldn't move it, should we? I mean, what if the actual parents come by?" A serious dilemna, to be sure.

Fortune snorted, "Any parent who would leave a foal alone for that long doesn't deserve to have the foal."

Wasn't that the pot calling the kettle black, eh? But perhaps if she could convince Safi to help her the little foal would have a family. The mare DID like children.

She just had no idea how to deal with them effectively.

Zaphiro sighed. Honestly, he had a sinking feeling that something had happened; parents did NOT abandon their children. But still...

"Even so, it's easier said than done to move this basket, Ma'am. I could probably carry it, but it would be hard to do any hunting that way. Do you have any suggestions?"

Maybe she could stay here with the basket while he went hunting for Safi and then come back later....

Wait, why was HE thinking along those lines now? He wasn't responsible for it O.o

She thought a moment and looked back and forth between the stallion and the basket. "Huh. Dragging it would be a bad idea. Uh...I suppose I could stay here while you go find Safi. After all, I've been unwittingly babysitting for the past hour anyway."

It wasn't really hard, and it was pretty eye catching. That would entertain her - but she was already feeling as though she'd been in one place for too long. There was no guarantee that she wouldn't up and leave.

"...On second thought, perhaps I should look for Safi and you stay here..."

"Well, that sounds like-wait, what?"

There was something wrong with that request, reasonable as it was. Hell, he didn't even know this mare's name! While Zaphiro didn't like to be cynical, he didn't know for a fact that she wouldn't forget about him and wander off, leaving him for who knows how long out in the woods with a basket. Not to mention Elizabeth would get annoyed...

"Do you know where to look, Ma'am? Because it could take a while..."

Humming to himself, Safi danced his way along through the meadow. Much as he loved his daughter, it was nice to have a little time to himself again. The past day had been fun, but he was starting to feel a pull back to Saiena.

That was exactly why he was heading in the direction he was, back towards the teepee compound. He'd been flying for the past hour, but a cramp in his wing had sent him groudwards once again.

Of course, that wasn't such a bad thing. A glint of blue sparkle caught his gaze, and it was enough to make him stop and stare. What was Zaphiro doing all the way out here? O.o

She shook her head, "No, but if he's anything like me - which he very much is - I'll be able to find him fairly easy." Fortune paused and looked at the basket. Yeah. She would not be able to stay there for too much longer.

She was about to trot out without another word when Safi's coloring caught her attention and she beamed, "Seems I'm better at it than I thought. Oy! Safi! Over 'ere!"

Damn, now she didn't have time to trot off and HAD to stay there. A sigh, her eyes closing.

Maybe he'd offer to take her for a walk.

Zaphiro swivelled at the sound of Safi's name, disbelieving that Safi could just appear like this when he himself had been largely unsuccesful in finding him. But no, there he was; that blue and white was unmistakable. Damn, that was eerie...

Safi blinked when his name was called, not expecting to hear from Fortune. That, and the fact that he hadn't actually SEEN her (Zaphiro blocking Safi's view as he was). But that didn't marr his pleasaure. "FORTUNE! If it isn't my favorite snow-fighting mare of the afternoon! Whatver are you doing out here? And same to you, Zaphy-boy." Grinning, he strolled over to the two, giving Zaphiro a nudge and Fortune a nuzzle of greeting. "You know, I didn't know you two knew each other! Funny, huh?"

"Actually, we didn't." Safi's greeting of the mare had reminded Zaphiro that he hadn't so much as asked her name yet, preoocupied with huntings and baskets as he was. But the moment was no time for introductions!

Fortune returned the nuzzle affectionately and giggled slightly, "Oh, yeah, fought the snow into oblivion, I did! It's all gone! Or, at least, getting there." she toed the ground before smirking.

"You like kids, Safi?"

Ah, Fortune, straight forward as ever. The thought of not knowing Zaphiro's name didn't seem to bother her much - but that was because she was so easily distracted and now her 'best friend' was there.

"Indeed, and knowing you and your amazing snow-fighting prowess as I do, I firmly believe that you're responsible for all the melting. Good show, Fortune!"

Grinning, Safi took up a stance between Zaphiro and Fortune; now they formed a triangle, which was a good shape to talk in. "And I adore kids; got a daughter and everything, as a matter of fact."

The pride was evident of Safi's face, in his stance, in his voice. Such a doting parent the world had yet to see!

At least, that was how it seemed sometimes to Zaphiro, who was standing there listening with a mixture of amusement and chagrin. He was supposed to be fetching Safi, after all...but it couldn't hurt to let the two catch up for a bit.

Her eyes widened, "Oh! Well, congratulations?" Fortune would definitely make the worst mother ever. The mare looked warily over at the basket and sighed, "Want to take on another? I found a basket, and it's been out here for over an hour. I thought it was food but this blue sparkly guy over here claims it's a baby."

She nosed the basket, still wishing fervently that it was food. "I think I should be it's mom, but I'd fail horribly. So maybe if it had a dad too it wouldn't turn out so messed up. Besides, it'd be like playing house!"

That appealed to Fortune, at least. "Wanna be the daddy?"

Zaphiro almost burst out laughing. Safi's eyes had flared so dramatically at that little statement that they looked like they just might pop, only to shrink down to their usual size as he took note of the basket. Trust Safi to take nothing seriously.

On the contrary, Safi was very serious as he nosed at the basket, aware of its prescence for the first time now that Fortune had drawn his attention to it. Pretty thing, wasn't it? "Weird...I wonder why so many baskets are being left out on their own these days?" A troubling concept, to be sure. "But I dunno, Fortune; are you sure I'm trustworthy enough to parent with?"

The grin on Safi's face was teasing; if he could manage one foal, he was sure he could handle two. Besides, the more the merrier! It was just somewhat strange to be asked that question by a casual friend. "That is, would you rather parent it with someone else?"
PostPosted: Tue Feb 06, 2007 4:22 pm

It was Fortune's turn to be serious, "You're my best friend." It was spoken softly, almost wistfully. Even if they had only had that one time in the snow, he really WAS her best friend.

Louder, "You're the only one I'd trust." A firm nod was given there as her eyes drifted back to the basket, "Besides, if I took it in by myself I'd forget about it and end up wandering off somewhere. If anyone's not to be trusted, it's me."

A snort. She knew her faults at least.

Aww, how utterly sweet. Sap that he was, Safi couldn't resist such an honestly spoken compliment; beaming from ear to ear, he stepped up and gave Fortune a loving nuzzle. "Snow killer or not, you're a sweetheart, Fortune. I'd be more than happy to help you out with the little one; the more the merrier!"

Saiena was already telling him there weren't enough kids around. What better way to handle that thanto bring home another basket? As long as he didn't get into the habit, of course. "Where were you planning on taking it, though?" He couldn't exactly travel about much, not with Sai in tow.
PostPosted: Tue Feb 06, 2007 4:28 pm

The nuzzle was returned sweetly and she smiled, "So're you, Safi love. As for where to go, I'm not sure. I generally don't have a stationary place myself so I suppose the best thing to do would be to take it over to where you are. Do you think your daughter will be okay with it?"

Fortune wanted to be sure there would be no problems.

Elizabeth was going to be annoyed. Maybe. She'd liked watching Sai as a basket, obviously she'd like watching this basket to. Or helping watch it; he was definitely going to be responsible this time.

So Safi barely had to consider the idea before he was nodding his head. "Well, Saiena's been telling me she needs playmates. I bet she'd love to have a...sibling." Studying the basket gave no indication as to the gender of this basket; obviously he'd have to wait and see this time.

"Well, we might asa well take it back, then; and you can see where I live, Fortune, so you know where the basket'll be!" A good circumstance for everyone!

Zaphiro was amused. Safi was on his way back, and he hadn't even had to say anything! Sometimes, conviniance went to extremes...
