Alexander could all but smell the bitterness that momentarily consumed his accomplice. The young blue male looked up from his meal for a second, wondering why Deimos seemed so angry all the time. Sure, he had lost his family as well and it hurt like hell, but one moves on. He had watched his siblings die. Oh well, he supposed some wolves coped with pain differently than others.

The blue pup continued picking at the bird, trying to get his fill of the meat. He really was grateful to Deimos for such a catch. Alexander didn’t usually eat this well, but he wasn’t totally starving and malnourished either.

Ears perked at the sound of Deimos’ voice. Alexander paused his meal to make eyes contact with the other lone pup. “And what’s that?” He asked, hoping it was something that would work in both of their favors.

"Lone wolves are dead wolves. I know from experience. We'll eat better if it's the two of us working together. What say you?" A feather drifted from his jaws, and he grinned, somewhat macabrely, his cerulean eyes glowing in the light of the moon.

Alexander heard what Deimos proposed, but he wasn’t sure how to react yet. He didn’t want to make any deals that would end up biting him in the butt later on. Further, he wasn’t sure if Deimos was the best traveling companion for him. Though, there was something about the young red wolf. Something amusing and exciting. Deimos was the only wolf his age Alexander had treated as a complete equal – he was usually the alpha with other pups. Alexander let his puppy mind process the idea as he chewed on more turkey flesh.

Finally, the blue pup looked up. Blue eyes met blue eyes and he donned a serious expression. Alexander wanted to make sure he had the other pup’s attention before he asked. When satisfied, the young male went on to say, “Can I trust you?” This was a very serious question for two young traveling companions. Alexander didn’t know who Deimos had befriended in his past. He didn’t know if there was going to be a midnight ambush in his future. Lone wolves might be dead ones, but ignorant wolves didn’t have it easy, either.

Deimos growled softly. Of course the other pup would ask such a thing; he would have too, if he were in Alexander's position. Standing tall, his tail and head raised high, Deimos felt his ears flatten against his skull.

"Listen, pup. I wouldn't have asked if I wasn't being completely honest with you. There will be no backstabbing from me; there will be no attacks from anyone associated with me. Frankly, because there isn't anyone."

An image of Tasu flashed before his eyes and he felt a brief stab of regret. He realized that he missed the fiery beta. But he was sure that the older male didn't even remember him. **

Taking a few steps forward, he stared Alexander in the eyes, hoping that the other pup would see the friendship he was offering. He didn't even understand why he was doing this, but it felt right. Somehow, it would work out.

"You can trust me," he growled, voice grown soft. And then he added something he never thought he'd say again, the word almost too quiet for Alexander to hear. "Please . . . ?"

((** I've decided to set a time for this rp as taking place after the one I'm/Deimos' in with Ronso/Tasubaa. Is that okay?))

(( That's fine. nn This will be after Alexander met Noyama's Kaho and Farfalla, but I'm not sure where it'll fit with my current rps. nn; I'm so glad Alexander has a true ally now! ;D I like Deimos. <3 ))

Alexander refused to show any signs of aggression to Deimos. Companions did no such thing in his mind. Instead, he exhibited simple, steady signs of dominance. Alexander’s tail rose as his own crystal eyes met those of the red pup. The blue male’s ears perked forward, listening carefully to Deimos’ next words. No backstabbing and no ambushing. That sounded fair. Alexander figured he should assure the same. There were no crinkles of aggression on his smooth face as Alexander dipped a black nose into a nod. “Same for me. Most of the wolves I know are pups anyway. Younger than us.”

He felt a slight twinge of sadness at the fact that Deimos had no wolves associating with him. This, in its own, was not enough for Alexander to join forces with him, however. On a brighter note, the blue wolf had already considered the fact that Deimos would be a valuable ally to have around now and then. Plus, Alexander was a hopelessly social wolf and would enjoy the company at the least.

Listening as intently as he was, Alexander had caught the final pleading statement Deimos offered to him. Though he hadn’t needed to add it, Alexander felt that final word cemented the deal even further. “It’s a deal.” Alexander said, tail wagging happily. “But don’t think I’ll follow you around like an omega,” Alexander warned. “We’re a team.” At that, he lowered his front end in a play bow, wondering if the red pup was too ‘mature’ to take part in a playful puppy wrestling match.

'We're a team.'

Those three simple words made joy explode within him, and his tail wagged furiously. Letting out a bark of happiness, he barreled into the other puppy without warning, and the two of them went sprawling into the snow.

Deimos was happy for the first time in months, and it felt wonderful. Suddenly, plans and dreams started forming in his mind, pictures of the two of them ruling over a pack like brothers flashing before his eyes. They were strong apart, otherwise neither of them would have made it this far. But as a team, as equals, they would be invincible.

Grinning wolfishly, he pawed at Alexander's face playfully. "Team. I like the sound of that."

A team. A dynamic duo. A great weight was lifted off of the young wolf’s chest as he was tackled by the red. This meant he didn’t have to shiver in the cold all alone before sleep any longer. Alexander imagined that they probably wouldn’t be together 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; a wolf did need his alone time on occasion, after all. But now… Now. He knew they were both established hunters (as good as puppies can be, anyway) so food would be so much easier to come by with a team effort.

Alexander’s tongue lolled out of his mouth as he kicked with his hind legs, trying to roll Deimos over so he could pin the red. He nipped harmlessly at the paw on his face, little tail going a mile a minute. Alexander’s mature façade melted slowly as he got to experience the joys of being a puppy.

“Yeah, we’ll be awesome,” he agreed, grinning right back at the other male.

Raising his muzzle to the silver moon, he let out a joyous howl, raising onto his hind legs with the force of it. As soon as his paws touched the snowpack, he was off, sprinting through the trees. He needed to run, to let loose some of this wild energy he suddenly had.

He wasn't alone anymore.

It took Alexander a split-second of staring blankly after Deimos with his tongue lolling stupidly from his mouth before he decided what to do. Rolling to his feet, Alexander’s hind legs kicked his speed into overdrive, trying to catch up with the red pup. Unlike other chases, he noticed Deimos and himself were very well matched. It wasn’t easy.

Alexander yipped and barked like all puppies should as he darted to and fro, dodging trees and bushes. Sometimes dodging, really. It didn’t matter if he occasionally plowed through a shrub or two; this was fun!

Deimos skidded to a stop, so abruptly he almost fell on his face. In his headlong run, he had found a perfect sleeping spot for the night. Tongue lolling, he turned to tell Alexander, but it didn't seem as if the other puppy had realized he'd stopped.

(( Sorry it took me a while to reply. oo; Life happened. xD ))

What Deimos saw was correct. Alexander hadn’t completely realized Deimos stopped running… yet. He soon found out, however. The blue male had been running top speed, his legs giving endless power after that satisfying meal. Unfortunately, his puppy reactions were much too slow once Alexander did realize he was in a crash course with the red puppy.

Alexander lowered his hindquarters and braced his forelegs, trying his hardest to stop in time. The blue pup turned his head to the side and closed his eyes, preparing for the worst. Next came the soft thump of puppy fur on puppy fur as Alexander collided into Deimos, wondering why the other wolf had stopped in the first place.

Deimos realized that his panting breath was misting more thickly before his muzzle. "It's getting colder. We should get some sleep," he murmured, pointing with his paw to the nearly invisible den entrance. "I've used this one before. It'll be a little crowded, but we'll stay plenty warm."

Alexander pried himself off of the other pup and peered around his red pelt. So there was a den there! Giving his tail a small wag, Alexander sniffed the ground out of instinct. He wanted to make sure this didn’t belong to someone larger who’d return for it soon. Satisfied at not smelling anything obvious and putting his trust in Deimos, Alexander walked up and stood right in front of the entrance. He hadn’t slept in a den since… since before the death of his mother. The blue male’s tail drooped at the thought. He had been sleeping at the bases of trees and in small pits to avoid reminding himself of ‘the good times’. However, he was also a pragmatist, and he knew he couldn’t avoid dens forever.

“Looks comfy,” Alexander stated quietly, lost in thought. Finally, he looked back at Deimos and took a deep breath before proceeding into the small den.

Deimos glanced around, making sure that nothing saw them enter the den. It wouldn't do them any good to find a decent place to sleep, just the get attacked in the night. Satisfied, he ducked his head and followed Alexander in.

The den was a little crowded than the last time he had visited, but not uncomfortably so. And it would be warm.

Not only that, but for the first time in months, Deimos had someone to keep him company. No more lonely, cold nights, where all he slept with was the chill dirt and hurtful tree roots. His parents may have been loners, but solitude was not in his blood.

He was a pack creature, and Alexander was now his pack mate.

So to speak.

Curling up in the middle of the den, he yawned widely, watching Alexander. The other pup seemed tense. "Something wrong?"

Alexander was giving the den a good sniffing when he noticed Deimos curled up in the center. The red male seemed satisfied with the sleeping arrangement, so why shouldn’t he be? The environment still felt strange, after all these months. Alexander hoped he could get used to it. The blue male could already tell this was going to be a much warmer nice than usual. Warmth was pleasant, right?

Snorting in satisfaction, Alexander flopped down next to Deimos, pressing fur to fur. He tried to suppress thoughts of sleeping next to his mother and siblings. Finally, a voice drifted to his ears and he realized Deimos had asked the question many moments ago. Nothing was quite wrong yet. “Just…” Alexander trailed, thinking of how to phrase it. He curled his tail in, sleeping in a little puppy ball and rested his head on the earth. “Haven’t slept in a den in a long time,” the youngster finally finished, not really minding if the other pup questioned further; he somehow trusted Deimos.
