Aku swiped at another tail, missed and almost fell off Melantho's back. She laughed. "Can't live with them, but this one I couldn't live without."
"Well, thanks very much," Aku grumbled, curling up. "Tell us more about your mother, Cressida, if you will - I'd like to hear."
"Oh, yes, do," Melantho echoed with a smile. "She sounds a good Nequus, though nothing like my own dear mother."
There were far fewer fond memories of her mother than Melantho would like. She had been young when the mare had died, though not too young to remember the loving care she had lost with the passing of that gentle spirit. Her father had blamed her, of course. Anything but blame his own negligence, or accept that there might be no need of blame at all. Made her weak, he said, with her birth. Made her die.
Inwardly, the black mare seethed. Some day he would pay for that in full.

She chuckled at the small carnivore's antics, her muscular tails twitching. "At least you've a good friend, even though he's a carnivore." She smiled, adjusting her wings a bit before replacing them at her sides. Blinking several times at the sudden question, it caused a slight frown to appear on her muzzle, but it was replaced by a small smile afterwards. "My mother? Well, I was young when we were separated, but I can still recall many memories," she said thoughtfully, gazing up at the sky as she walked.
"I remember she was pure white with blue eyes, and was very independent, because she raised me on her own, but then again she kind of had to since my father disappeared. She was very kind and loving, and took wonderful care of me. When the ignorant and pushy Ichsa stallion found his way to us, my mother, I think, just figured he wanted protection while in the mountains. She really never seemed to notice he was there, he wasn't part of our small family nor do I think he ever became so." She gazed out at the rolling waves in the sea for a few moments before glancing back to Mel. "What about your mother? Do you remember her?"

Melantho sighed. "Mm, yes, I do, though not as well as I should like. She died when I was quite young - never quite the same since I came along, so the herd always said, never quite as strong as she had been. Father took that as an excuse to blame me for her death, of course, which she would never have done."
"Damn straight," Aku grumbled. "That dungball's been down on you since the day you were born."
"Down on us, you mean. He never liked you either."
"Yeah - damned if he could get a stomp in edgeways, though. I was always too fast for his big a** to catch me!"
The black mare laughed. "True, true. ...Yes, my mother. She was...the kindest, the sweetest, the most gentle and loving Nequus I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I wasn't with her when she died. I wish I had been - that would have been the least honour I could have granted her."
"But at least you hadn't fought with her or nothin'," Aku pointed out. "That'd've been worse. Wish you could've met her, Cressida - I remember her a bit, and she was an angel."

"I'm sorry you have too few memories of her, as well as your late herd being so closed-minded, those're both awful things. And she sounds like a wonderful mare, Mel," she said with a bob of her head, gazing off distantly. Muscular tails twitched behind her as she thought to herself about her own mother. Would she ever see her again?
She frowned slightly, putting the thought out of her mind, and looked at her companions, ears perked. "I'm absolutely horrible at conversation topics," she said with a chuckle. "So, what's your favorite color?"

The chorus of "BLACK!" was nigh instantaneous, and followed by peals of laughter from Rit and Reya alike. An old joke, but it was still a good one. Aku was laughing so much he almost fell off Melantho's back, but luckily she was a little more together than her brother and managed to catch him with a few of her tails.
Eventually, Melantho's giggles subsided far enough for her to speak. "Heehee, sorry. That's a very old, very bad joke that would take ages to explain as well as I'd like - to cut a long story short, my father was possibly the silliest colt ever to grace the fields and forests of Eden."
"He figured he could turn himself black if he rolled in enough mud," Aku chortled. "What a bozo. And then when his daughter turned out black, all his old buddies were joking about it and saying, "oh, maybe it only works a generation down the line" - awesome."
"And back then there was nothing wrong with being black, of course," Melantho added with a roll of her eyes. "Anyway, yes - it's not entirely a joke. We're proud of our coats."
"Oh yeah, baby! Black is BACK!"
The dark mare couldn't resist a chuckle when Aku struck what he must have thought was an impressive and inspirational pose. "Hm-hm, something like that. Other than that...blue, I think. Blue like the sky. And the colour of flames. And the colour wonder is through a seer's eyes...it's a sort of shimmering silver and gold."
"She swapped sights with a Seer a while back," Aku explained. "Half-breed, name of Storm. Good-looking mare."

The gold mare couldn't help but laugh at their near instant response in unison. "It sounds like he was a bit lacking in common sense, I think," she said with a chuckle. "Those are some of my favorite colors, too, another being bright green, like the grass." She bobbed her head affirmatively, studying Aku's magnificent pose. "I've never swapped sights with anyone before, it sounds very interesting. What was it like?" She asked curiously, ears perked as she watched Mel now with her pale green eyes. This sounded very intriguing, indeed.

"Only a Seer can do it, I believe," Melantho explained. "And it was...indescribable. Incredible. Frightening at first, looking at myself through her eyes, turning my head and watching myself turn, but...enlightening. I understood what I was seeing, and it was...oh, there aren't words. I saw emotion. I saw feeling, right there in front of me. There's nothing like it."
"And you liked her, didn't you?" Aku put in with a grin.
The dark mare snorted. "Aku..."
"Whatever," he laughed. "You were so into her."
Melantho looked away. He was right. She had been. Thoroughly. But what could be done? Nequus like Storm drew eyes, and her eyes were only mortal to be drawn. "...all right, fine. What of it?"
The Rit chuckled. "Easy, Mel. It was cute. Besides, it's about damn time you started liking people."

The gold-coated mare listened intently, enthralled by the other's tale; she'd never heard of this concept before now, and it had thoroughly peaked her interest. "It sounds magnificent," she exclaimed, ears still perked. "Definately not an every day experience, but that's rather obvious." She re-adjusted her leathery wings, folding them back against her bright coat, as she listened to their amusing argument. "This mare seems to have had a positive impression on you, which, if it's not too bold to say, is a wonderful thing. I hope that you two meet up again soon," she said with a bob of her head and a smile tugging at the corners of her muzzle. "I wouldn't mind meeting her as well, she sounds like a very interesting horse to meet."

"Yeah, provided you're not a Rit," Aku muttered ruefully. "She would'a stomped on me if I'd'a come out. Doesn't like Rit."
Melantho laughed. "Neither did most of the herd, Aku," she pointed out. "You've narrowly missed a lot of stompings in your time."
"Psh. I still think your hopes are too high for her. I dunno if she'll get over her fear of being Nequus - could you handle someone who wouldn't let you get to know them?"
That was a good point. Melantho bit her lip. "I hope you're wrong about that, Aku."
"Mm, so do I. ...Aaaanyway, enough of that. Cressida - " He turned to her with a grin. " - do you sing at all? I feel like singin' again. It's not far to the cliff path now, and then there's good grazing to be had for you and good huntin' for me. Won't you sing with us along the way?"
Melantho lit up at the mention of a song. She had always loved the way singing made her fill up with emotion, and singing with others was a sure-fire way to boost her mood. "Oh, do join in, please," she urged the other mare. "I'd love to hear you if you're willing."

"Aww, I can't see why anyone would want to stomp on anything smaller than they are. Maybe if you were being a bother, but not out of the blue for no reason," she said with a snort. Her muscular tails twitched more, the tip of one snaking down and ridding the gold-colored mare of an itch on her hind leg.
"Sing?" Her ears perked up as she gazed at them both. "Oh, I haven't sung in I don't even remember how long," she said with a laugh. "But sure, I'd love to join you. It sounds like great fun! But, please, forgive me if my singing skills aren't quite up to par, I haven't used them in a great while." A grin spread across her face as she spoke, adjusting her leathery wings to a more comfortable position against her sides. "Cripes, I don't even remember the last time I sang anything. Wait," she said after a thoughtful moment, "yes I do. It was when I was just a foal. So yes, please, forgive me if my singing talent is a bit lacking."

"Whooo yeah!" Aku leaped from Melantho's back and bounded across the sand ahead of the two Reya. "I know just which one - wooo! Here's a little song for everybody out there!"
And he raised his voice to the heavens.
"People try to take my soul awaaay!"
Melantho knew this one. She knew it well. They often used it as a song of pride, an affirmation of their faith in themselves. Delighted, she joined in: her powerful voice filled in the next line.
"But I don't hear the rap that they all say-aaay!"
By now, both black creatures were walking in step. Aku quickly lost ground to his far larger sister, and sprang on to her back just as he began to sing again.
"They try to tell us we don't belong, but that's all right - we're millions strong!"
"This is my music, it makes me proud..."
"...These are my people..."
"...and this is my crowd!"
They launched themselves straight into the chorus, singing in perfect unison. Of all the songs they sang together, this was one of the best.
"These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights!"
Aku, grinning, shot a glance at their companion. "C'mon, Cressida - sing it!"

The gold-colored mare laughed, she hadn't had this much fun with another in ages. She listened to the song they sang, admiring the fact they could sing in perfect unison and how they knew each other so well. It might be nice to have a best friend, one whom she could count on to be there for her always, and nodded a bit to herself. Melantho was lucky indeed to have found such a friend, and Aku was just as lucky as his sister.
At their urgings, her smile widened and she quicked her pace slightly to catch up with them, having slowed slightly while pondering. It took her probably two or three strides before she was right beside them both, ears perked. Lucky for her, she knew this song, even though she hadn't heard or sang it in a long time. A wave of apprehension washed over her as she wondered if she would be able to remember the words, but threw that small worry to the wind and began to sing the second line of the chorus in unison with them. "These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights!"
She couldn't help but grin, her spirits truly higher than they'd been since.. she didn't even remember when. Her former worries disspitated as the words to the song flooded back to her, brought to the surface of her memory by hearing the words from her two newest friends, and her voice rose to the stars. "Sometimes days are so hard to survive, a million ways to bury you aliiive!"

Aku was grinning madly as Cressida began to sing the second verse, and Melantho couldn't help copying. She'd suspected that the gilded mare might have been a touch too modest about her singing, but hearing her was a delight. The next line was hers, so she took it:
"The sun goes down like a bad, bad dream...you're wound up tight, gotta let off steam!"
"They say they can break you again and again..."
"If life is just music..."
"...then sing it again!"
And around came the chorus, and they were singing with one voice.
"These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights!"
The cliff path was ahead, and good food awaited, and she had her brother, and Cressida hadn't been Clytaemnestra after all - she'd been a friend, a new friend who seemed to understand. Tonight was crazy in the best way possible.
"These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights!"

"These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights!" She sang the chorus with her dark-coated friends in unison, twice through, she remembered, happier than she'd been since she was just a foal. "These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights!" She had her two newest friends, her high spirits, and a multitude of songs to sing after their current piece. And on that topic, the next verse was due, so she took it.
"And they try to tell us that we don't belong, but that's alright - we're millions strong!" And, indeed, Cress couldn't feel any stronger or more capable than she did with her friends at that moment. She was with these two, and she never felt more invincible. No one could beat her right now, she felt too good and her spirits too high. "You are my people, you are my crowd, this is our music, we love it loud!"

"WE LOVE IT LOUD!"
Because they did. It was rare that they got the chance to sing with someone else, and even rarer that they dared raise their voices so high.
"Daaaa ba-da daa... doo wah-da ba-dah... daaaa ba-da daa... doo wah-da ba-dah..."
Aku's scat singing always made Melantho grin. He sounded as though he might be playing an instrument, like the humans did when they danced in the torchlight. Tonight, of all nights, she felt as though she were leading the dance. It didn't feel bad to lead.
The next line, half spoken half shouted, was a call to the heavens, daring the very stars to disagree.
"And nobody's gonna change me...'cause THAT'S WHO I AM!"
"YEAAAH!"
She'd do it some day. She'd go back, she'd put her father in his place, she'd make them all see just what one black mare and her little black brother could do. Aku's shout of elation made her sure of that. Tonight, among old friends and new, she had the power to do anything.
They were still singing, all three of them together, two black and one gilded, as they headed for the clifftops and the sweet green meadows beyond.
"These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights..."
