"Tch," Keres said, giving herself a thorough shake. "Stallions can be rats at times; good number of 'em wouldn' even look twice at ya unless he thinks ya coat's pretty or you got a nice shape. I suppose it's ok to pick on looks alone if both are just in it t' breed healthy foals but how often does that happen?"
The Reya mare raised her head to look around at the plains of D'ob. "Still," she went on, "ah guess mares can be kinda shallow as well at times, hu? Ah know ah've judged guys an' girls on what they seem like at first an' sometimes ah been slow t' let m'ah first impressions change. Ah guess ah'm just a bit thick skulled an' stuff takes a while t' get through t' me," the black-coated Nequus said to her companion with a smile.

Kimama nodded her head, feeling guilty that she had judged the black and purple mare before she had gotten to know her. She hated those kinds of Nequus yet at the same time she was just like them-judging almost every Nequus she comes across just because of the color of their pelt. She shuddered slightly, promising herself that she would never do that again, even if her life depended on it.
"Some are rats, indeed, but I think most are just too stubborn to pick a mate for themselves. I don't see why stallions don't want us plain mares for a mate. They want the pretty ones with the swirly markings or the bright, bold colors on their pelt." she wrinkled her nose slightly. She could have had a mate with a good-natured stallion but he turned her down for a bright pink and white mare with bold markings on her face and legs. Since then she has always hated pink.

The Reya mare grinned. "Probably so's their foals have a good chance of getting a pretty coat, an' then of getting themselves a mate when they grow up. That's what m’ah sire always said a lot of his friend were doin' when they were pickin’ out mates. Kinda makes sense ah suppose," the black-coated Nequus mused, a slight frown on her face as she considered.
Keres sighed and twitched her muscular tails. "Well, the ones that pick us for what they want their children t' look like aren't worth havin' anyways, wouldn't ya say? Ah'm sure some nice guy who ain't too scared or too brash or too worried by what y'all look like on the outside will come along in the end.” The pink-winged mare grinned. "Ah mean, they gotta be out there somewhere, right? Probably feelin' kinda cross with all the other guys f' getting them a bad name with the ladies."

Kimama flicked her ear irritable. She didn't really get why having a pretty coat was such a good factor in getting a mate. She knew her sister, who was plain like her, got a really nice mate not to long ago. Since then they have had two good batches of offspring. Kimama often wished that she was as lucky as her sister was when it came to finding a good mate. "I don't care if the males think I am plain. I am going to find a good mate who doesn't care if my coat is too plain and just worries about my personality."
She pinned her ears back against her skull. "I really hope that there are stallions like that. I know all of these ones are just waiting for a pretty little femme to snatch up and claim as his own." She glanced around the edges of the forest, seeing clumps of stallions chattering to themselves. She spotted the splotched Jala she had ran into not too long ago and saw his shuffling his hooves nervously. "I wonder if any Bae has fallen for a stallion of a different species of Nequus before."

Keres turned her head in the direction that held the other mare's attention. "Ah've sure heard of it," the Reya replied as she wondered which of the stallions it was that Kimama was thinking about. "The foals tend t' be outcasts though. Not one thing or the other, ya know? People can be pretty nasty about it. Maybe that's why it don't happen all that much," the pink-eyed mare mused, flicking her muscular tails idly.
"Still; ah guess it don' matter too much if ya really like the guy, and if you're sure that the foals know there's nothing wrong with how they are” Keres went on. “M'ah family was careful about that with me; apparently there's some bad feelin' against black-coated people of late. Somethin' t' do with some black Bae in the fruit lands ah think but ah'm not all that sure. Ah never really asked f' details and nobody seemed t' want t' tell me."

Kimama shrugged her shoulders, not really thinking much of the concequences if she bred with a Nequus that wasn't a Bae. She folded her wings against her body loosily as she glanced at the many clutters of stallions near the edge of the forest.
"I wonder why having a black coat is such a taboo nowadays. It never has been until recently." She flicked an ear slightly as she shifted her weight to one side of her body. "black Bae?" She had never heard of a black Bae before, but then again she hadn't heard anything about the black pelt taboo until a few days ago.

The young Reya mare nodded in confirmation. "Yea; a mated pair of ‘em. Apparently they like causin' pain t' anythin' they can get near to especially little weak things like foals. Ah guess people jus' don't wanna take the chance that it's somethin' in the colour that makes them like they are. People can be pretty silly when it comes t’ keepin’ their little ones safe."
Keres swished her tail at a bothersome fly and smiled slightly at the pale-coated Bae before her. "Still, most people aren't like that; they just see black as another colour to be. Ah guess it'd be the same with cross-bloods but ah might be wrong there; ah'm wrong about lots of things," the pink-maned mare said with a rueful grin.

Kimama nodded her head. She didn't really think of why it was the colour of ones pelt that made them a bad Nequus. She thought it was the personality and they way the Nequus was raised that made an innocent foal go bad. Flicking an ear, she pawed at the ground lightly.
"Maybe. We really don't see many half-breeds often and when we do maby assume that they have bad blood and a bad personality. I don't really think that's the case. Some are good and some are bad. It all depends on their personality and the way they act." She gazed at the Reya curiously, wondering what Keres was thinking.

"Yea, ah think you're right," the Reya nodded her head for emphasis. "Cross-breeds, black-pelts, people who're just a bit different. They're all people like any other person.. That sounded kinda dumb but y'all know what ah mean, right? Like... your skin doesn't make your heart ah guess."
The mare smiled slightly at her companion. "Ah'm not all that good with words, but ah probably told y' that already; ah usually warn folks not t' expect me t' use big words an' that." Most people didn't seem to mind that she wasn't the brightest Nequus ever. Keres had a sneaking suspicion that this was for one of two reasons.
Either they were genuinely nice, or her wild and somewhat dense presence made them look better.

Kimama nodded her head. She fully understood what the Reya was talking about. She didn't know why some pure-blooded Nequus would have cross-breeds so much. They were Nequus just like everyone else. Flicking her tail, she listened to Keres' next words carefully.
"That's alright. I'm not the brightest bulb in the world, either. Some say I was dropped on my head when I emerged from my fruit. I'm guessing that might be true, but that doesn't prevent me from trying to become smarter than I really am." She canted her head to one side and gazed at the Reya calmly to see what her reaction was to her statement.

Keres laughed aloud and swished her tails. "Ah guess that's one way of goin' about life," she said to the other mare. "Personally ah don't worry about it too much though. If ah get smarter that's nice an' all but ah' don't mind bein' the thick one too much. I traded brains for brawn and speed, ah don' think ah'd swap the other way given the choice; ah enjoy racin' way too much t' do that."
The black-coated Reya chuckled some more at the mental image of a small foal falling on it's head. "Ha!" she exclaimed with a grin. "If ah'd fallen on m'ah head when ah was little ah'd've got stuck in the ground by m'ah horn! Ah bet that would've been funny t' watch."
The pink-maned Nequus played the sequence through in her mind once or twice and snorted with amusement as she discovered that it would indeed have been a thoroughly hilarious scene.

Kimama nodded her head. She knew she wanted to be smarter, but at the same time she didn't want her strength and agility skills to diminish. She was one of the fastest Bae in the area, but she hated to brag about it. Fluttering her wings slightly, she listened to the Reya's comment about her might have fallen on her head as a foal.
Blushing slightly, she turned her gaze downward as she scuffed a hoof on the ground. "yeah, maybe. It is a good thing Bae don't have horns or else I would have gotten stuck in the ground." She heard the snort of a laugh from the Reya and she blushed a darker crimson.

Keres grinned and nodded. "Yea; they can get in the way sometimes but they're useful too. People don' tend t' mess with me, though ah don' really know if that's thanks t' the big spike or if it's somethin' else."
The Reya's grin softened into a smile as her pink eyes ran over the mare before her. "Ah've always thought you guys have real pretty wings," she commented with a nod at the appendages. "Don' get me wrong, ah' like m'ah own too but they aren't as interestin' as Bae wings, ya know? Still, if ah' were allowed t' pick, ah'd take Jala wings. Ah'm pretty good at flyin' as it is but the best fliers always seem t' be Jala, so ah'm thinkin' it's somethin' t' do with those feathery wings they got."

Kimama nodded her head. She often found the Jala wings to be rather interesting, but she loved her beautiful butterfly-like wings better. They were easier to deal with and she wasn't much of a flyer to begin with. She loved to hover above the ground, though, and that was as much flying she could handle.
"I wonder what it would be like to have my wings and a horn like yours," she said in a dreamy-like voice. "I bet it would be interesting for the foal to have." She giggled softly under her breath.

Keres chuckled and nodded her head in agreement. "Yea; weird lookin' little thing it'd be ah bet. Sorta sweet though, perhaps, an' you'd sure think it was the cutest damn thing ever if it were yours 'm ah right? It's like built in or somethin'; parents always think their foals are the prettiest or the handsomest and the cutest out of all other foals ever."
The Reya mare smiled to herself as she remembered how her parents had adored her as a filly. She hadn't looked very much like either of them; her purples and pinks hand come from streaks in her mother's mane and her black from her father's legs. The origin of her markings however was still something of a mystery. Strange in both manner and appearance, not to mention thick though she knew she had been, her sire and dam had doted upon her. Still did for that matter. Whenever she visited their territory the pair still fussed over her as though she were only just learning to fly again.
"Ah don' think parents ever really see their foals as adults," she commented to her companion with another slight smile.
