i would disagree, i think.

perhaps for the established, mature individual, you would be correct. it is easier to live a frum live in israel. but i would argue that for a still-developing child, or a growing family, it may be in some ways all the more difficult. in chutz l'aretz, one has the concrete, definite seperation of jew and non-jew. there is no "secular jew" to speak of, at least not israeli proportions. there are irreligious jews, and many of them, but relatively few who would define themselves as secular by principal.

so. in israel, it can be far easier to "go off", because there is already a majority who have, and the party lines are blurry and ill-defined. there's always more jews to associate with, and many who despise the "old-fashioned". for one who is staunch in his/her belief, this matters little. but what of others, who don't know what to believe?

just my 2 cents, and not all that well-founded at that. still, something to think about.

Good points... But I think that for people like us, Israel is the place to be.

Easier to be religiously or culturally Jewish?

Cause I would say it's probably much easier to be culturally Jewish in Israel, but easier to be religiously Jewish in the United States. My friend in Israel says most Israelis are pretty irreligious, and most of my reading tends to support that view. Also, in the US you have different movements, in Israel it's pretty much Reform or Orthodox.

yea that makes sense too, I read this one analogy about it lol about how when like you're having a hard time being the minority you are more likely to snuggle up with judaism and tell her you love her but when it's all good and nice in the world then you're like nooo leave me alone i want to play video games on shabbos! crying

xd

You also get days off for religious holidays, and people are so much more understanding of that sort of thing.

good point that is one huge advantage to being in Israel.

darkphoenix1247
You can also wear what you'd like; for example, if a guy work a yarmulke here, he'd probably get teased, beat up, or in really bad places, shot.

>.> oh we aren't supose to wear the kippah to work.. damn it gonk crying I never got that memo damn it who do i complain to. Zonko I never got that whole no wearing kippah memo. I can't believe it. gonk

people are stupid.

i dunno. i've worn a yarmulke, or some type of hat, every day since age 3. and i've never had much problems about it. i mean, occasionally in grade school a kid would try to steal it, but being very good at running and even better at arm-locks helped a bit.

people are stupid.

I don't know who said the whole thing about Jews in Israel not liking other Jews in Israel, but I'm wondering doesn't anyone try and stop it?

Like I don't know here at my school we have talks in sex ed all the time about the importance of protected sex and how bad aids is, and it always makes me think if we got talked to from a little age about tolerance over and over again, would it eliminate hate?

They always say knowledge is the only weapon to ignorance.

I mean we always had talks in ccd (cathlic school basicly) about how you shouldn't have sex before marriage, they only mentioned eveyr now and then the importantace of tolerance and that was when i went to a cathlic school, and in third grade, and to boot I only think it cause her grandmother had been imprised in the japanesse internment camps. So it was important to her.

okay i'm done with my rant 3nodding :gives everyone huge cookies for sitting through the rant and gives them choice of milk or soymilk to dip cookie in::

because it's not hate from fear of the different, it's hate from embarrassment of the same. it's also more of a difference of opinion gone horribly wrong. it's all about perspective, and priority. how does one "stop" something like that?

in my opinion, protected sex is the lesser of evils. i think tolerance works the same way. people only need it because they shouldn't.

Quote:
They always say knowledge is the only weapon to ignorance.
whoever says that is decidedly ignorant. one can know the entire encyclopedia and still be as dumb as a doorknob.

being tolerant isn't important.

not being stupid is.

I don't mean to be negative, and I'm not sure if this kind of response is appropriate in your topic. But Please, does it really matter? Really?

I'm sorry I just hate that, jewish people with different life styles, living in different countries arguing with each other about who is better. To me it's just pathetic...
SO many people hate jews already and criticizing each other as well is just going to tear the religion apart.
It's just like when Catholics fight with Protestants...

I am an American jew. My father taught me that Judasim, like all religions of the world, is a personal journey between you and your god alone, no one has the right to force their views on others..
All my life, especially in school I've been scolded, looked down upon by other jewish kids in my generation because I wasn't well educated in the Torah, didn't know about Israel, didn't speak enough Hebrew, Etc, Etc.
But you know what I say back. "I'm happy for you that your keeping up with tradition, both of our ancestors would be proud. But god didn't give me any type of paper and pencil test. God gave me life and I'm going to live it the way I want to."

As long as any jewish man/woman/child is generally a good person and spiritually content with judaism isn't that enough?!

Morph:

You know, you're actually right. Everybody does have different levels of beliefs, and none are "right" or "wrong," as it's up to an individual's conscience to decide. This whole debate is impossible to continue in all honesty, as unless you are an unbiased person who has lived in all parts of the United States and all parts of Israel, nobody can fully argue that. Besides that, everybody hates us anyway; why bother comparing things that divide us?

Well, as an Israeli jew,I'd say that it is much easier to be a jew in the jewish country.
Here we don't have xmas trees or pumpkin heads all over the place, and like I said before- the judaism is obvious, even to a חילוני like myself and my family.
I guess that in America, like most other countries, it is rather different- judaism is a minority, after all.

Does it matter? Yes, it does matter. Israel is our home, Israel where we belong.

I'm not saying that not being in Israel makes you a bad jew. Not knowing the Tanak by heart doesn't make you a bad jew either. Nor does not knowing all the names of every commentary ever published. Saying that is just plain stupid, since everyone has their level of belief, and the whole point of Judaism is that we always try to move forward and become closer to G-d. But all that won't change the fact that Israel is where we belong.
