Finding Recayr

The rain had started coming down sometime that night, pouring out until the next morning. The scent of the rain hung heavy in the air, a faint reminder of why everything was wet outside today. A small sighed passed by his lips as the door to the house swung open. “I’m going out!” He called back into the empty house so Sapheria couldn’t say he hadn’t told her.

Toran tripped on the first step, nearly falling over before regaining his stride. That had hurt! He turned to look back, seeing a small trip wire placed by some prankster. Surely not his Saph, he thought with a small smile. Taking a knife out of his pocket, he cut it swiftly before it could do more damage, walking down the sidewalk.

However, instead of the light getting brighter as he headed on, he noticed that the sky seemed to darken… as if hell itself was coming to embody Gaia. He paused, starting to feel his heart beat a little faster. The air around him seemed to shimmer, and he turned abruptly around. This wasn’t goo- What?

A large hole in the ground seemed to open up, revealing a blinding red light. His arm covered his eyes, and he found himself peering at a den. A den?! He was about to get mauled by some rabid animal, he just KNEW it! His heart hammered in his ears, and his stomach felt like it was churning in order to lose his breakfast.

The light began to fade, revealing a small entranceway. His mind screeched for a halt, but his limbs carried him numbly towards the hole until he found himself looking in. Green eyes blinked at spotting the sleepy infant, its fox ears twitching as it nestled itself into the red and black blanket.

A small prickling on his arm suddenly distracted him. He scratched idly, confused by the babe’s appearance. His fingers slipped on his arm, sticky and “Oh my god!” He held his right arm out away from his body, eyes wide as his heart leapt. Lacerations were appearing there, small cuts forming words before his eyes. He bit down on his tongue, keeping a scream back as the world around him seemed to fade. As it healed and cut before his eyes, he took in every word.

‘Dear Sir,
We do not know you, but we have decided that you and your wife shall take care of our son. You do not know us, but we will be watching you. Keep our Recayr safe. Should harm befall him, you shall regret it.
The Unknown Eyes’

The wounds were gone before he knew it, and he was picking up a little baby boy. Recayr. Standing up slowly, he cradled the little fox boy in his arms. Did he really want him in his house? A small shooting pain jolted up his arm, nearly causing him to drop the boy. The ground shifted, closing up the gaping maw into mother Gaia. “I suppose I don’t have an option, eh, buddy boy?” He asked with a small frown. The sky was returning to normal as the world faded back.

“Let’s go meet your mom, eh?” And let me tell you this, buddy-ro. If you do anything to harm her, me and you are going to have it out, no matter what your real parents say. Until then, me and you are father and son. But if you ever hurt her, you’ll never be happy again. Ever, you hear me? Of course not, he thought, letting a small smile drift on his face. They wouldn’t have that problem, he hoped. Ever.

Ghost from the Past (Completed RP)

Calm had settled over their household, the married couple having finally gotten Recayr to stop one of his few wailing sessions. The man leaned against their couch from his seat on the floor, a happy sigh escaping his lips as he peered at their demon. He hadn't told Sapheria of how he had found the red-headed boy, merely saying that the child had been abandoned with a note requesting aid for the boy. He smiled warmly at her, green eyes sparkling merrily. The morning sun filtered in through the windows, lighting up their living room.

For the first time in a while, the house was calm again. Sapheria had to admit, she loved her new 'son' dearly. But questions had buzzed in her mind ever since Toran had brought home the little fox-boy. She wouldn't dare turn the little boy out, but she still had unanwserable questions about Recayr. Sapheria finally sat down next to Toran, smiling back at him with the same undying warmth from before they were even married. She was glad this morning seemed to be an easy, quiet one to be able to relax.

Toran smiled back at his wife, placing an arm around her shoulder and giving her a small squeeze. "Now wasn't that fun?" He asked lightly, his eyes remaining on her. She was so beautiful... and he so lucky. The moment of perfection and tranquility swirled into nothingness as the doorbell rang. "I'll get it." He announced, swiftly getting up and walking to the front door. As he opened it, he was suddenly widening his eyes at this ghost from his past standing on their front porch, his blood running cold.

The man who stood there was as tall as the younger man, darker in skin tone. His black hair came to his shoulders, green eyes turned downwards in dissinterest towards a smoking cigarette. "Boy." His voice dripped the poisonous hate that Toran remembered so vividly, the man's identical shaded eyes meeting his own. He felt frozen in place, unable to slam the door like his mind and soul screamed for him to do.

Sapheria watched her husband get up, following Toran with her eyes went to anwser the door until he was past her line of sight. She scooped up Recayr--who was now on the verge of sleep--and cradled him gently. Staying against the base of the couch, Sapheria gently rocked Recayr and hummed softly till his eyes closed in sleep.

The much hated man walked closer until finally something in Toran's mind clicked. Throwing the door violently, he managed to slam it into the outstretched hand that managed to keep it open. There were questions Toran wanted answers to, but most of them being shouted would alarm Sapheria in ways he wasn't willing to make her think about. The door swung back open lazily, the other man ust outside his door now, leaning against the frame. "So, boy, you're still alive." The comment hung in the air.

"Go away." Toran said coldly, refusing his urge to glance at his wife and 'son'.

Her hearing pricked more, hearing the door slam. The sound made her visably wince, and she had to make sure the noise hadn't startled Recayr awake. Thankfully, however, the boy was sleeping soundly. Sapheria held her 'son' closer to her, before oh-so-slowly starting to stand up. She tried to peer at the door without being seen, afraid and curious at what was going on.

The man laughed at the authority in the younger's voice, walking into the house and into vision. "Trying to sound authorative? You know, being intimidating never was your strong point."

"What do you want?" Toran growled, still backing up until the man stopped moving.

"Who is this?" Toran's head jerked, spotting what the man had just seen. "I suppose the word was true. Went and got married, did you, boy?" His eyes scanned the woman in front of him, landing on the child in her arms.

Icy blue eyes stayed on the man as soon as he came into view. She could feel the man size her up, and she involuntarily took a step backwards--a large slip from her past. She held her ground after that, shifting Recayr so that his face wasn't visable to whoever had come Toran and her's home.

Her icy blue eyes flickered over to Toran, her eyes trying to ask a million questions in a moment. "Toran...?"

The man frowned slightly at the child, looking her over for hidden signs of the fox-like traits the child showed. He glanced out of the corner of his eye, and Toran noticed that somewhere along the way, the man had lost his cigarette.

Toran walked over to stand by Sapheria, growling quietly. "Meet my father."

Sapheria let her gaze linger on Toran, before switching to the man infront of her. Now that she thought about it, the man was her father-in-law. "...Pleased to meet you.." She offered him a half of a smile before her gaze flickered down at Recayr, who had whimpered and snuggled more into her to stay warm.

Toran's father continued to critically eye his daughter-in-law, finally just shrugging it off. "I suppose it must be." If that's who you married, he added silently, glancing at the couple. "What's your name, missus?" He didn't finish the question for several reasons. First and foremost was that he wasn't sure if the boy still had taken his last name. "And the child's?"

"What do you want?" Toran repeated again, unsure of why this one had spent his time tracking him down. He hadn't seen him for over... thirteen years...

Sapheria let her gaze rise up to the man, faltering to stay up before looking away. "I'm Sapheria.. and he is Recayr.." She murmured softly, keeping her gaze at the sleeping child in her arms for a moment, before looking over at Toran.

"Sapheria and Recayr? Lovely names," He commented, ignoring his offspring in favor of his grandson and the boy's mother. "I am Tion and curious." He said, resisting a small temptation to reach out and give the little boy's fox ears a tweak. "He looks nothing like either of you." Tion glanced about, as if expecting to see others running about. "To answer your question, boy, I came to see your new family. Is that so wrong?" The malice has vanished nearly completely for his voice, but the way his eyes gleamed for the briefest of moments sent chills up Toran's spine.

"I guess not," Toran growled quietly, resisting an urge to glare. If he did want peace... but hadn't that ship sailed aeons ago?

"Thank you..." Sapheria gave him a soft smile. She should at least be on friendly terms with her father-in-law, shouldn't she? "Pleased to meet you, Tion." At his comment about the difference in looks between them and their 'son', her face faultered. How was she supossed to explain that? Actually, she really couldn't...

At the look on her face, Tion managed to bring up a certain thought. If Toran thought this child was biologically his, then the boy was certainly far more stupid than his father could have ever imagined. "You're welcome." He smiled at the child, a bit at ease now that he had it figured out that he wasn't quite the grandfather he thought he was.

Sapheria smiled again, feeling even more nervous now then before. A small yawn made her relax, and her icy blue eyes looked down to see Recayr's own sleepy eyes start to open. Sapheria smiled deeply, shiftly the baby slightly in her arms so she could stroke Recayr's cheek. "Did you sleep well?" She smiled, not expecting an anwser. But she remembered her mother always asking that whenever she woke up.

Tion looked away from the mother and son to glance at his own. The boy who little resembled him had certainly changed. After all, her hadn't seen hide nor hair of him since... well, since he had left the boy's mother. He could remember that day so vividly...

Toran shifted uncomfortably. He did not want this man in his house. Tion had broken his mother's heart and then disappeared, and Toran had never forgiven him. After all, it wasn't her fault his son had had no bravery at such a young age that... He shook his head slightly, going to stand beside his wife. He was torn. Torn into halves between should and shouldn't. He had seen the quick glance the man had given towards his grandson, and knew exactly what was running through his mind. "Recayr was adopted by us, Tion." He couldn't bring himself to call him 'dad'. "And he won't be the last addition to our family." Don't say it, you moron. It's like lighting a fire around explosives, you idiot! "Sapheria and I have an appointment at a nearby clinic. We're going to have biological children, if it works."

Tion's eyes widened, his eyes looking between them. "You can't." He said bluntly, that gleam of hatred resurfacing. "There's no way, so shut your lying mouth."

Sapheria smiled at Toran, still eternally grateful to be even near him. Her smile faultered at Tion's words, and she felt in the back of her mind...anger? "Why... would he need to lie about something like that? It's true, anyway..." What was she doing? This was none of her business! But, Toran was her husband now. She wanted to know what would happen between the two of them, she wanted to be involved with his life.

To spite me, my dear girl. Tion's thought rang clearly throughout his mind, his eyes growing cold. He couldn't ask why, it was obvious. Two fools in love... "Toran... is not suitable for fatherhood. He never has been, and never will be. Even to give him an animal to watch after is a cruel thought." His words came out almost like a hiss.

"You can't prove that," Toran said, thinking back quickly. The justice system of Gaia couldn't prove he had no right in charge of another life, right? Even if so, he always had Sapheria.

Sapheria wanted to say so much more then what she said, but bit back her tongue before the situation turned more. Her eyes glittered with the unsaid things she wanted to say, yet held back. All she knew was she wanted this man out of their house.

Recayr's foxish ears twitched, before laying flat against his head. A whimper escaped him, as if sensing the tension in the air. Sapheria's eyes instantly shot down to Recayr, pulling the child closer to her and attempting to hide his head from what was going on with her hand.

Tion watched the two, and became aware that he had worn out his welcome. "Just watch. The boy takes after his old man in at least this one way: we don't deserve to handle the lives of others."

Toran glanced at his family, and decided it was time to show this jerk how much he had changed since childhood. He took a step forward, but Tion was already back out the door. He cast a glance over his shoulder, smirking in an amused manner that made Toran growl. It was over as suddenly as it had began, but somehow he felt that all traces of him would not be gone for a while.

Late, As Usual (Incompleted RP)

Peace now washed over the area after night had fallen hours ago. It was well into the night, and everyone under the night sky was tucked into bed snugly as clocked tolled at Midnight. A soft breeze passed through, weaving itself between houses as clocks quieted down.

A soft crying from their fox son hit Sapheria's ears directly, waking her up from her peaceful slumber. Her icy blue eyes cracked open a bit to the darkness of Toran and her's bedroom, body not wanting to respond to movement. She blinked, reaching out to give Toran a soft shake. "...Toran? Can you go check on Recayr?"

Toran had been stuck between sleep and insomnia since they had come to bed, and he just as he about passed over the brink, something came between him and sleep. Cracking open an eye, he peered at his wife. "Sure thing." He whispered, slowly rolling out from beneath their blankets to the edge of the bed. He stood up on the floor, stretching his arms for a small yawn. He went to Recayr's room just a few feet away from theirs, walking through the room to his son.

That slumbering face... full of innocence... it almost made him forget what had happened the day he'd found him. Almost. Recayr shouldn't be hungry, seeing as he had eaten a little while ago. Toran picked up his son gently, wondering if he needed changing.

Sapheria smiled, listening as Toran left the room to check on their son. She sleepily lifted her head, then nestled into Toran's spot on the bed. Yay, so warm.

The fox boy whimpered, trying to cuddle into his father as he was picked up. The touch seemed to calm him, and Recayr quieted down. Perhaps, just a bad dream? Recayr snuggled, though his eyes remained open and blinking up at Toran.

No, he seemed fine. At the boy's affection, Toran couldn't help but smile at him. He held his son close, comforting him from whatever bad dream had been. He met his boy's eyes, feeling that promise he'd made to the little bugger all that while ago seemed to be fading slowly. "If I don't watch out," he smiled as he whispered, "I might get attached to you, buddy." He hugged his son gently, before asking quietly so his voice wouldn't carry, "You gonna be okay?"

Happiness sparkled in Recayr's eyes, reacting from the positive signs from his dad. He smiled and giggled, trying to reach up for him. The bad dream from moments ago seemed to vanish from his mind completely.

A loud, resonating knocking made itself apparent from the front door. Recayr whimpered at the loud noise, it hurt his ears. Too loud! The knocking paused for a moment, then started up again.

Toran, who had been painstakingly trying to keep from waking Sapheria if she had fallen back asleep, nearly leapt in the air and dropped Recayr at the pounding on the door. He steadied himself, putting the baby back in his crib. "Try to go to sleep," he said soothingly. "I'll come check on you before I go to bed." As if the baby understood. He went to their room and grabbed a shirt and sweat pants off the floor, tugging them on quickly. He didn't bother glancing at Saph, he just wanted the banging to stop.

He ran to the front door, placing his hand on the knob."Who's there?" He asked, trying to keep from sounding too angry with the person at the door. They could, always, be dangerous.

Recayr whimpered, watching his father leave. He whimpered again, and fell silent.

The pounding on the door paused, and ceased. "...Is this the Deadri household? Or, rather, is Sapheria living here?" The voice that came through the door was a young male's--most likely in his early-to-middle twenties. It was a curious tone, but it had a ragged tone; like he had been out of breath.

"Yes to both questions. Why?" He reached towards the lock on the door, waiting for an answer. This voice did not sound, to him, like someone meaning to harm, but he wasn't taking any chances. Not with Sapheria. He knew that, with whatever answer was given him, he was going to end up unlocking and opening the door. So, without any more hesitation, he twisted the lock and turned the knob, slowly opening the door.

The man let out a sigh, letting his head hit the doorframe. He was a somewhat tall man, maybe a foot taller then Sapheria; with bright blonde long hair that had been blown over his left shoulder and swirled around his neck. His bangs--or, what were his bangs--were a charcoal black in color. He watched the door slowly open with rich blue eyes, eyes that seemed to echo exasperation and a twinge of fatigue. The man dressed in a white tank top, dark grey belted pants, with a grey jacket snugged up against his fit body. A light grey ankh-like figure hung around the dark-colored band around his neck. Half of a smile lit on his face, one that seemed to cover up the emotions in his eyes.

"Well, to put it lightly, I'm Taka Reiga. Sapheria's older brother... and your Brother-in-law." The smile seemed to widen at that statement, and his eyes flickered.

"Brother in law?" Toran said, watching the strange man with still wary eyes. As much as Toran didn't trust his own family, it would be easy to believe how little he liked Taka. "Well, do you need to talk to Sapheria?" He asked, scratching behind one ear nervously. "I bet she's awake..."

Taka visably winced at his sister's name as he lifted his head from the doorframe. He knew he was in for it, when he talked with her... His blue eyes looked back at Toran, and he nooded. "Yeah.. I need to."

Sapheria, who had roused at her son's consistant whimpering, gently pet the top of his head. "C'mon, Recayr... You need to sleep..."

"Fine. Stay here and don't be too loud. You'll wake the baby." Okay, so Recayr was probably still awake if Toran knew his adopted son. He turned with full confidence that Taka wouldn't hurt him. True, his heart proceeded to jump like a rabbit running from a wolf, but he still managed his way back to the rooms, checking Recayr's first. Seeing her there, he called softly. "Saph, there's someone here who wants to talk to you. He says he's your brother." He didn't doubt Taka, but it was safe to say 'he said'.

Taka blinked wildly at the message the man had given him(he didn't even know his name, jeez...). Baby...? He mouthed the word to himself. Oh man, would dad not swallow this well... The thought hit home at being an uncle, and a grin slowly made it's way to his face. Him, an uncle... He meandered inside the house, shutting the door behind him before leaning against it while taking in the house decor.

Blue eyes raised from Recayr to her husband slowly, half-asleep mind registering what he had said. Brother? Brother...? She blinked slightly. "...Taka's here...?" She left Recayr's cribside dispite his protests, and began to wander towards the front of the house. Her eyes widened as she spied her blonde-haired older brother leaning against the door, looking cooler then he sometimes acted. He grinned when he saw his sister walk in, ignoring the over-sized shirt she was dressed in that came down to her knees. "Hey Saph."

Toran nodded, glancing down at Recayr to make sure their little boy was okay. Once he was assured, the young man followed behind Saph to the front room, glancing at the other who seemed so... familiar with her. It put him slightly at ease. He sent up a thankful prayer to whatever gods would listen that it wasn't another member of his family shown up. Toran didn't think he could handle Tion in the dead of night.

Daddy and Baby Time

The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains to the scene of the young father alone with his infant son. Sapheria had gone out for the day, leaving Toran alone with Recayr. The small boy was on the floor, Toran watching him with a small smile.

He was silent as usual, cuddled up close with a small stuffed fox that seemed to be his favorite toy of all. It made no noise, and it was something he clinged to almost constantly now. His red hair was messy and in his face. They had gone to get it cut once, as it seemed to grow fast, but Recayr has fussed again with ferocity often unobserved.

"Hey buddy," he said quietly, picking up both fox boy and fox plush, holding them close. Toran smiled down at his son. Recayr looked back solemly, one ear of the red animal in his mouth. His father scratched gently behind the boy's ear, chuckling as it flicked and his eyes blinked.

He'd be darned if he wasn't getting really attached to this orphan, this little boy who still, at times, scared him. Suddenly, Recayr released his fox's captive ear, giving a big toothless yawn. Toran knew what that meant. Standing slowly he headed back to the baby's room, still smiling. Still happy.
