Jaz, Jade wants to know how you cracked your tooth?
Jelly, what does descaling teeth involve? I've not heard the term before.

hmm, not sure what you call it over there then, it's where they scrap the tartare build up off from between them, scale and polish is the full term over here.
i haven't had mine done for so long because the hygeinist uses a manual tool, like a tiny pickaxe, pushing down towards the gumline to chip the tartare away, and it hurts crying i come out with lacerated gums.
other places use an electronic version that doesn't hurt at all, but charging dentists is pretty much impossible as there are no spaces available anyway neutral

We just call it a cleaning. Usually get it done every 6 months, if you go regularly.
Does your dentists office have more than 1 hygienist? Maybe you can request a specific one. Ours has 2.

Pop, if you have it done regularly, and are SUPER diligent with brushing and flossing in between (can you tell I've had these problems? lol ), you probably won't bleed the next time you go. I bleed very little when I go for my cleanings now, and I'm not diligent with flossing by any stretch of the imagination.

i'm not good with the floss, i have a couple of places that i MUST floss daily because there are gaps between my teeth (British teeth rolleyes )and food gets trapped between them, but tartare builds up between my teeth quickly regardless of how well i scrub and poke, according to the hygienist both me and my Mum have a lot of calcium in our saliva and this causes build up to happen faster.
i used to go regularly, every 4 months at one point, but they stopped sending out reminder cards and that was it for me! a couple of years went by before i thought about it again and i've just continually put it off ever since.
i know i'm just being a wuss about it, and any discomfort has gone by the next day, but my gums always bleed you know, every time i clean my teeth, they'll stop for maybe 2 days after a dentist clean, then start up again. but they're not sore or swollen or anything like that, they've just always bled when i clean my teeth*shrugs* there is only one hygienist though, and the worst thing about it is when the dentist used to clean my teeth himself, he had the little whizzy electronic device, so when the hygienist started doing them and hauled out the hammer and chisel i could almost feel my teeth trying to hide gonk
maybe she's just a sadistic meanie evil

That's kind of what happened to me.. I would go every 6 months when I lived at home, and then our dentist stop sending reminders when I was 16, and I didn't go again until I was 23 and pregnant with Jade! And then they couldn't even do xrays.. I've only gone a couple times since, but now that we live in town again, I'm going regularly. It might be worth the long hassle of switching dentists and waiting for an opening again if the fear of the sharp tools and bleeding gums is going to keep you from going for a longer time!

really i just need to give myself a big kick up the backside, i never get regular check-ups for anything! i've had these glasses since 20th July 1999 redface so i'm LONG overdue for a visit to the optitians too rolleyes
suppose i should be grateful that i haven't had any problems that have forced me to go to these places really, i must have pretty strong teeth if they put up with the amount of neglect that they get from me! my wisdom tooth hasn't bothered me for a couple of years now, though it has hunched down now so it's at a 45 degree angle and it trying its hardest to shove all my lower teeth on the left side of my jaw out of my mouth! my lower canines have always been slightly twisted, but the lefthand one has been pushed forward by another millimetre or so by my bolshy wisdom tooth.
but i'd rather put up with that than go and get the horrible thing dug out!
i have no wish for the first dental work i ever have done to be a wisdom extraction! i am proud of the fact that i have no fillings in my teeth, my Mum and my sister both have numerous fillings, i think it's all down to my Mum not giving me sweets as a child, my sister eat sweets and chocolate by the cart load, and got her first tooth filled when she was 8!

I've had 7 fillings in my life, but 5 were on baby teeth. I inherited my mom's soft teeth (the dentist can sometimes chip pieces off with his tools) and so even though my sister neglects her teeth and sometimes doesn't brush for days gonk she's never had a cavity!
The hygienist loves my teeth though because they're straight and healthy (I've only had one small cavity since childhood and it was due to a small dent between my front teeth which I've always had and which I guess finally got enough stuff trapped in there to start eroding) and when she sees my name on the list for the day she cheers because my mouth is heaven compared to most mouths she says she has to work on!

She tried to file and whiten my teeth last year before the wedding (I was going to get a bridge put in to replace my missing front tooth) and she musta filed too much. I didn't notice it until the crack got from being superficial to reaching my roots. OUCH!

I know if it were me, I would change dentists and get it done right, rather than risk getting another "whoopsie".

i hav not been to the dentist since i was 18 and still on dads dentil plan.
atm i have sevral teeth eroding away i have lost one compleatly and sevral on there way. i kind of just stopped brushing i think i sould just have tem all pulled cuz even if i start brushing now it's not going to save the ones alredy going and it would cost me a fortune to fix them all. one of my friends told me that it would cost 3k just to get them all pulled. and get dentures.
i use my self as a you don't want to end up like me brush your teeth thing to my son and any other kid out there. i just show them my teeth and say i didn't brush tem you really want to end up like this?
i sapose i should but i think it a bother well i really should get them looked at i mite have a sist some where in there don't want to die from that huh?

Yes, definitely get them looked at! Pretty much anything can get repaired, and it's amazing what they can do (from watching shows like Extreme Makeover.) It must be costly, but to me, worth it!
