(RP took place Janurary 18th, 2007) {RP took place in the Shop}
 Kipestshin Allon stormed into the shop,his Citrine in tow. He smelt of pond, blood, ans sweat. It was not very pleasent. The man was breathing hard. He had been on a good clip since they had left the lake, which was not close to town, let alone the shop. Citrine coveted her precious cargo and was quite. "ATHAN", Allon boomed as dirt fell onto the floor of him, "where are you?!" Reyna Crelos It was Reyna that was behind the desk rather than Athan. She didn't jump nor flinch when Allon stomped his way inside. She did smile, however, when he yelled for Athan. She stood from her seat and leaned casually against the desk as she eyed the man before her. He reaked of carnage, a scent the demon was all too familiar with. "Up to trouble, eh?" she started with a sly smirk, "He'll be here in a moment. He stepped out for a bit to get something to eat, so I'm afraid that you'll have to be a little patient." Merci` Merci trailed in in the wake of the angry Allon and Citrine. She inched along the wall slowly trying to not get involved in whatever was irritating the man, but still trying to look over the shop. She pulled her jacket around her shoulders and turned the collar up out of habit. The woman usually did this when she was nervous. She eyed Citrine and couldn't help a small smile that quirked just the corners of her lips. Though it left her and she jumped slightly at the volume of the voice that came from Allon. Merci was suddenly glad she wasn't Athan. Kipestshin Allon snarled when Reyna spoke. He wanted him now. Citrine's level of patience had clearly been a trate he was picking up. The man shifted impatently, leaving again more dirt. He didn't seem to notice Merci. Citrine on the other hand did, and was keeping quite the eye on her. But her hands were still shut over her prize. Merci` Merci's eyes moved over to Reyna, back to Allon and then to Citrine. When the redheaded woman was sure she wasn't in any trouble she could allow herself to relax. Anyone that looked like that, and smelled of blood was not someone she wanted to be on the bad side of. He seemed to be ignoring her for now which suited her just fine. Little Citrine on the other had made Merci want to smile. She raised her hand slowly and gave a little finger wave that the girl who seemed to be protecting something. Merci has long wavy hair that fell down to her knees. Currently she had bound up at the nape of her neck to keep it out of her face. Her clothing was nothing special, a white tank and a black leather jacket, with a black leather skirt. Her boots were flats, but came up to her knees. She didn't seem to spend much time worried about makeup or how she looked in the morning. Reyna Crelos Reyna's smirk grew into a broad, fanged grin. She chuckled quietly but it sounded more like a slight growl that clicked low in her throat like a cat purring. "Can I get you some coffee to make the wait more bareable?" she asked lightly as she folded her arms over her chest. Her posture was loose, yet tense, like a spring that was waiting to go off. The smell of blood and earth mixed together was difficult to ignore. Idly she let her gaze drift towards Citrine and then to the woman that the little shadow seemed to have her attention focused on. Her gaze narrowed as the bell to the door chimed once more, signaling the entrance of the man of the hour. "Athan," the demon spoke up before Allon could get a word (or weapon in) edge wise, "Citrine and her bond are here to see you." "Oh? How..." he trailed off as he took in the appearence of both individuals and the dirt on his nice, clean tile floor, "... nice of you both to drop by." Kipestshin Citrine dashed to him. "Mr.Athan!...I have... I found... ," the little shadow was less then articulate, but the she didn't have to say much. Allon pulled his blue magic finding stone out of his leather pocket and it lit up the room. Citrine sheilded her possession from it, and backed away from everyone. Allon just glared at Athan like he was doomed. Reyna Crelos Athan's bright green eyes seemed to mirror the glow from the blue stone that was clutched within Allon's grip. "So I see, little one," he spoke up before he moved to crouch near Citrine's side. "May I see it, please?" he requested politely, "If you don't mind." He could feel her tension. It bled off of her and right into him as well. No wonder Allon looked about ready to skin him alive. It was not so pleasant to deal with, and he could feel the subtle, yet steady onslaught of a serious migraine on its way. Merci` She wasn't usually someone that was this quiet, but Merci recognized when she didn't belong in a conversation. This was one of those times. Her eyes may not have followed every movement in the room but she did however listen to everything that was being said. The little shadow seemed the be the friendliest thing here, and idly Merci was wondering if she had wandered into a situation that was unhealthy. The blue stone lit up the room and tore her eyes from Citrine out of instinct. Her hand raised to shield her eyes from the light. The redheaded woman didn't want to stare, but she had no idea what it was, and she was facinated. Kipestshin Normally Citrine would have just turned over her clutch in the form of a gift or suprise, but she held onto it. She didn't know why she wouldn't let it go. She didn't want her Allon to hold it, that was for sure. She wouldn't share him. The little shadow was to confused to make a choice, so she stuck to keeping it. "n...no." she backed away and closer to Merci. Allon stuffed the rock back into his pocket and scratched at his hands. the burning was getting worse. Reyna Crelos Athan frowned, but didn't try to pressure Citrine into handing over the stone directly. That, he knew just from knowing her, would NOT be a very good idea. In fact, it was safe to say it would be quite detrimental to his health if he were to attempt such a thing. "Well... how about...," he mused quietly, "We trade? I do have a gift for you." He offered her a charming smile and stood to head towards the backroom, pausing only briefly to shoot Reyna a sidelong glance. She looked like she was on edge. Great. He had Allon wanting to skin him alive and a demon ready to pounce on just about anything that moved. At least his dinner had been nice. He sighed and went to rummage through the safe, hunting for the necklace he'd found that fairly screamed 'Citrine' to him. Merci` She flicked one of her ears and watched the drama unfold. She wasn't completely oblivious to what was going on, and to be honest it was more entertainment then she had been privy to in quite some time. The little shadow was so beautiful, and she was clutching something like it was something very important. Merci was very curious about it, but the little one was obviously not interested in letting go of it willingly. Merci allowed the wall to support her weight, as she leaned her shoulder against it. She made no moves to get involved in what obviously didn't include her. Kipestshin Citrine thought it over. She did adore Athan gifts. "... okay" she was deffently caught in his lure. She watched the man leave to get her a present... then looked at her Allon. He held his arms open for her. She darted behind Merci and... dropped something in her pocket before zooming over and landing herself in her Allon's arms. Reyna Crelos Athan re-entered the room with quick strides, though he paused just a few feet away from where Citrine and Allon were. It was almost as though the room had shifted. He sighed, mildly exasperated as he glanced over towards Merci. Whether the woman was aware of it or not, she was now intricately involved in what was going on. He could already feel the stone that had been dropped in her pocket attempting to awaken. He shook his head but offered Citrine another charming smile as he handed over a fancy jewelry box to her. Inside was a delicate sterling silver necklace with an intricate pattern of black pearls interwoven within it. He shut his eyes for a moment as the room seemed to almost spin as though it were shifting once more. "The stone.." he murmured as one of his hands shot up to the bridge of his nose in a vain effort to stave off the iminent headache that was already pounding at his temples, "... is hurt..?" It clung desperately to Merci, trying to connect to her so that it might be able to live. It's own soul energy was weak, depleted as though someone else had been using it. At the same time, he felt another awakening like a domino effect. Merci` Merci blinked a little bit as the Shadow moved toward her and away, she hadn't really felt a thing as anything was deposited in her pocket. She heaved a small sigh as the little one deposited herself into Allon's arms. Somehow when they were together it seemed right, though Merci couldn't quite put her finger on why. Athan reentered the room, and she still wasn't sure what she thought of him yet. He seemed so.. so... Suave. She straightened when he looked toward her and she cleared her throat gently, not sure if she was going to be asked to leave or not. The glace was passing however and she felt herself relax again when his attention wasn't on her. She tucked her hands into the pockets of her jacket and she felt something there she didn't recognize, something... Her hand wrapped around it gently and she pulled it from her pocket. Her eyebrows furrowed, and her fingers didn't uncurl from around the surface of the stone. Something about it was... it was different. She couldn't help looking up at Athan and Allon, her mouth opening just slightly, allowing her to draw breath between her lips. Kipestshin Citrine pawed over her new jewelry, content as ever. Ignoring Athans obvious unplesent feelings she rambled at him the story of the crazy swamp lady, never taking her eyes much off her new necklace. Allon started to relax a little. a very little. His Citrine was in his arms for the first time since the killing, and it felt nice. Citrine was just content she had something new, and her Allon wasn't anywhere near that stone. Reyna Crelos Athan nodded as he listened to the little shadow-child's story. "Mmm... must be why it's so weak," he murmured before moving towards Reyna's desk to brace his weight against it in hopes that it stop the room from spinning. "...Athan?" Reyna queried with an arched brow. He looked sick all of a sudden. "There's another one." "Another.... stone?" He simply nodded before his eyes snapped open, glowing bright. "It's.. trying to steal energy from another," he murmured in sudden realization. "Eh... isn't that kinda what Fiends.. ya know... DO," Reyna muttered dryly as she took her seat behind her desk. "No. The stone is trying to leech off energy from another stone, not form a bond," Athan explained in a sudden rush of syllables. He shot a backwards glance towards Allon and Citrine. "... you're not going to appreciate this, but I'm afraid I've no choice," he informed the duo apologetically. He took a step away from the desk and opened up a small circular portal. Runes appeared one by one to unlock the small 'safe' before spinning brightly and disappearing altogether. Athan reached inside with one arm and drew out a red stone that was pulsating brightly with a strange inner light. His headache was quite suddenly worse. Really, he was getting a little irritated with how the current shadows seemed to have a way of awakening without his bidding. Kipestshin The stone in Allon's pocket was glowing almost white as Athan opened the portal. Allon's eyes rolled back in his head, the overwhelming smell of old magic ripped though his system. This was not the first spell he had delt with, but it was teh closest and oldest magic he had. His Citrine was the only thing that kept him from snuffing the man like a candel. Not because he knew she would die, but because she was in emotional pain. Her Allon's pain has shot back to his bonded. And even he was unable to stop it. He coiled around her and backed into a corner. His breathing labored. It must have been a strange sight to Merci and the rest of the shop. Merci` Merci's eyes travelled up slowly to what was going on in the room, her mind slowly catching up to what was happening. She seemed rather fixed at the stone that she held in her hand and hadn't exactly been keeping track of the current situation. The man and the shadow in the middle of the room had backed themselves into a corner and a small part of Merci's brain told her that she should probably leave... and now... She felt like she was moving in slow motion, her head was slowly spinning. Things here weren't right, she leaned more of her body against the wall and didn't close her mouth, because she felt like it was the only way she could breathe right now. Reyna Crelos Athan clutched the small red stone within his fist tightly. Black tendrils began to form around it, curling around his hand in protest at being held so tightly without any room to move of it's own accord. The pain was no longer from two wisps, but instead was intently focused upon one -- the stone that was currently within Merci's possession. He smiled gently over at the woman before moving towards her. "My dear, I'm terribly sorry, but you seem to have visited the shop at a wrong time," he murmured softly as he laid one hand on her shoulder, "Please, allow me to explain the situation to you, as I'm afraid I'm going to need your help. As is the stone beset in the ring you hold in your hand." Kipestshin Citrine watched, remembering how she too came from a stone. She stretched her arms as far as she could and covered her Allon's eyes, like it would somehow keep the stone from seeing him. She hissed a warning to it to keep away. Merci` Merci realized slowly that Athan was talking to her, the weight of his hand on her shoulder entered her conciousness slowly. The object in her hand seemed to demand all of her attention, and it took her time to focus her attentions elsewhere. She blinked her green eyes slowly and muttered in a very quiet voice. "You... you need my help?" She didn't fully understand how a stone could need her, but at that moment in time she wasn't thinking entirely straight. She sucked in her lower lip and took a deep breath, "I don't think I understand..." Reyna Crelos "Yes," he answered smoothly, "That stone contains a soul, and if you were to allow it to become bonded to you, it will grow and thrive. Essentially, it will become a shadow creature." He smiled over at Citrine and motioned to her with his free hand. "Like her." A small frown shadowed his features for a moment before he met Merci's gaze. "But, if you cannot, or simply do not wish to, I'm afraid that this stone may die. It.. is terribly weak," he stated softly, eyes sifting closed as though he could feel the stone's pain as if it were his own, "And it desperately needs someone." Merci` She listened to him carefully, and she had to think about each word he was saying. Her fingers slowly uncurled around the ring and her gaze slowly moved from Athan down to it. A soul was in danger, it might die. Somehow the idea of a soul being in this particular ring wasn't that outlandish to her. Merci found herself nodding before he knew what was happening. She couldn't bear the idea of a soul dying because of her. "I don't want it to die...." She could think, she felt so numb somehow. "I don't want anyone to die..." Reyna Crelos Athan smiled. "Then it's settled. Keep the ring, and when it awakens it will appear about like this," he informed her as he held the red stone out towards her. It floated just above his palm, dark tendrils of shadow wisping out around the stone and up into the air as it wobbled before steadying itself. "Normally, if the particular stone you have were well enough it would already have assumed this form, but I'm afraid it needs to reserve a bit of its energy before that is possible," Athan explained, "But when it does awaken, come back to the shop. You'll have more questions, no doubt, and Reyna and I shall have the answers you seek." The silver haired woman in question idly waved towards Merci with a small smile from where she sat perched behind her desk. "For now," he went on as he gaze a small sigh of what seemed to be relief, "All that is required of you is to keep the ring near. It simply needs your presence to lend it strength." Kipestshin Allon had heared this all before, not that he was listening. He felt sick. "We... are going... to the backroom.." the man managed to say as he forced himself to move. Citrine refused to move her tiny hands until she realized they were just going to keep bumping into stuff if she didn't. She took one hand off, and kept one on, to cover from seeing the ring. She waived at Merci and Mr. Athan as they left. Merci` Merci nodded slowly and somehow she started sort of getting used to the feeling, she still felt odd... but she nodded again and swallowed.. Her fingers curled around it and she brought it up to her chest, near her heart. She looked at Reyna and cleared her throat nodding her to crisply before she stood away from the wall. She was sad to see the little shadow go, she liked Citrine even though she had only seen the little one for a moment. Something about her was just.. likeable. The woman stood for a moment and shook her head, "I think I should go..." she inched toward the door, not letting the ring out of her hand as she did so. She inched backward and let her eyes move over the room before her back hit the door. She paused before she pushed back through the door and nodded to both of them as she left the shop. Reyna Crelos "Weeeeell," Reyna spoke up, broad grin once more plastered across her face, "That certainly went smoothly, dont'cha think?" Athan scowled, and said nothing. He was in no mood to be harrassed by the demon. His head was still pounding and he was still left with one problem -- the red star ruby that was currently hiding within his shadow. He certainly couldn't keep it. That, and he felt a bit bad for the young woman that had merely ventured into their shop to no doubt purchase or simply browse their selection of jewelry. Reguardless, she did end up with a piece of jewelry, just not one of typical value. "Mph. Cheer up, Scrooge," Reyna teased, "At least Allon didn't maim you." Athan's sour look darkened. "Still have one problem to deal with," he grumbled as he motioned towards the wisp. "Eh. I'm sure you can pawn it off on someone. Give it a day or two." He shook his head and pressed a hand to his face. Doomed. He was doomed.

 The sound of the door clicking shut seemed to echo in the silence that permeated her home. Merci's fox-like ears perked up on the top of her head as she shouldered out of the leather jacket and hung it on the nearby coat rack. She couldn't hear them moving about, but then again she rarely did. Her two housemates could move as silently as death when they wanted to, and it annoyed the hell out of the kitsune. Her house was old, as one could tell by the feeling that washed over them when the walked in. Old houses have a spirit of their very own, and this house was no different. She had inherited the place from an old friend that had moved on and wouldn't need it anymore, it now sheltered her and everything she held dear. She walked slowly down the hallway and hung a left into the parlor. The room wasn't gaudy, but it was definitely decorated by someone other then the leather clad woman that paced into the room now. It was period, and done in antiques. She had attempted to change it, but her housemates had overruled her. The only thing in the room that she had changed was one of the couches, and she flopped down on it bonelessly, allowing it to cushion her body and cradle her like a child. Merci sat there for a moment, allowing everything to sink in slowly. In her hand, she held an ornate silver ring, with a beautiful stone set inside of it. The stone, she had been told, housed a soul. Not just any soul, a weakened one that would surely die if not cared for. Things were a little jumbled, but she knew that the ring had been stealing energy from another like itself, and it was now attached to her, stealing her energies as well. Merci wasn't in pain, and the feeling of numb detachment had slowly passed, but she was still unsure as to how that ring had gotten into her pocket to begin with. The woman lifted her legs and curled them up under her body, freeing her hair and tossing it back over the couch. She lifted her hand up, and looked at the ring in her palm. The other stone Athan had shown her had been surrounded by black wisps of... Shadows. Then there had been that other little shadow girl, she'd been called Citrine, she seemed awfully attached to that, somewhat frightening man. Is that would this little stone would turn into? Would this end up being like Citrine? Merci sucked in a breath and let it out slowly, playing the events through in her mind, still trying to make sense out of everything. She just about leapt out of her skin when a soft voice reached her from a very close proximity behind her. "You're home late...." Merci's ears flattened out and she turned around to see Seraph curled up on the carpet directly behind her, looking as serene as ever. Seraph was one of the two medusa that lived and shared her home, and he seemed to get some sort of perverse joy out of scaring the tar out of her. At least she thought he got pleasure out of it, his face never seemed to register any kind of emotion whatsoever, so it was a blind guess. "I was out..." The Kitsune grumbled, sinking lower in the couch. "Vance and I were worried about you." The medusa moved forward, gracefully, curling his way around the furniture to settle next to her. His eyes were covered by what appeared to be sunglasses, but Merci knew better then to think he couldn't see with them on, and she followed where his head pointed... "I see you have a new... ring?" Merci flushed and she curled her fingers around the stone and held it up against her chest. "Yes I do, and I would appreciate it if you and Vance would leave it alone actually. It's very precious to me." The quirked eyebrow was the most reaction she would ever get out of the medusa, and she sighed. "I got it in a store tonight; it's a very special ring. Just promise me that you guys will leave it alone. It's... It's fragile." Seraph gave an affirmative nod, "of course it doesn't look fragile, and it looks remarkably well made. I think perhaps you are not giving the craftsman adequate credit." His tone was mild, and seemed to fluctuate enough to make him not completely monotonic. Merci shook her head, "The ring itself isn't fragile, it's the..." She paused and wondered how she could explain this. She herself wasn't completely sure of what was going on yet. The soul inside is dying and I have to nurse it back to health with my own energies? Is that really what was going on? That would make the stone a parasite really. Seraph wouldn't like that sort of explanation. "Well the stone inside isn't set quite right, I have to have a jeweler look at it and make sure it doesn't fall out." She honestly hoped he would buy it, though she always felt guilty when she lied to her boys. She watched him, and it took him some moments to analyze the information, "I see, I shall inform Vance when he awakens from his slumber. Will you be needing anything else?" Merci smiled a little bit and shook her head, climbing off the couch to stand up and stretch. She moved her arms straight up above her head and arched her back with a small groan of satisfaction. "Nah I think I'm good Seraph... I'll be heading off to bed though." The larger medusa moved out of her way as she shifted past him toward the stairs. She could feel his eyes on her as she exited the parlor and jogged up the stairs to the first landing. Soon enough they would both know, she just didn't want them trying to take it away from her before it had gotten some of its strength back. Both medusa were a tad bit overprotective of her, and she never fully understood why. She did know one thing though; she didn’t like lying to her housemates. Sometimes you had to do things you didn't like for the greater good.

 ~The page is old, and the edges are worn, it is obvious the book in which these words are written is well loved. The black ink shows up well against the yellowed paper. The penmanship is delicate and careful.~ I am at something of a loss to explain what has been happening. I have never felt so alive, and at the same time so utterly out of control. I now have in my possession a ring, a beautifully crafted silver ring. The metalwork is amazing, but it isn't the most striking thing about this particular piece of jewelry. The stone inside is what catches the eye. I had to look up what type it was, and I found that it is called a "Black Star Diopside". It is purest black, and when light touches its surface it is refracted into a four pointed star.
It hasn't left my person since I got it almost two months ago, much to the annoyance of my housemates.
Weird things have been happening though, and I am not sure if it's the stone or my mind. I feel weak sometimes, like a kitten. I've never had a problem opening the pickle jar, and for some reason Vance has had to do it for me at least six times since getting this thing. The odd thing is I feel like it is getting stronger. I don't know How exactly I know this, just deep down inside I know it's doing better then it was before.
When it was given to me, I was told there was a soul inside. That the soul was weak and it needed someone to care for it so it wouldn't die. I was told that it would start to wrap itself in shadows.
It's stronger, but it hasn't done what I was told it would do!
The ring is as it was the moment it was given to me. Silver and stone, designed by masters. It's passed through my mind that this is some kind of an elaborate joke. That this ring is exactly what it looks like, that it harbors no soul, and that I have been imagining these feelings because of things I was told in that shop.
That's what any sane person would think.
However I am not sane, anyone sane would not live with two Medusa. Somehow I want to believe that I have been entrusted with the keeping of a fragile soul. There is an attraction to being needed that much. I love Vance and Seraph, but they are far from helpless. Neither one really needs me, and I often find that I end up relying on them much more then they do me.
I've never been blessed with children. This is again probably my own fault. I'm not exactly the ultra femme. Will this be something like having a child? A part of me is desperately afraid of that. While there is the attraction of having something need me, I know that somehow I will end up letting the poor thing down. Perfection is something that has eluded me, and I know that heartbreak seems to be an integral part of life. Having someone rely on you means that if you fail, you aren’t the only one affected.
I want it to wake up. I want it to swirl with those shadows and become like that beautiful little Citrine I saw in the store. The way she clung to that big man that smelled of blood and dirt, I want that. I want to have something love me that way. It's selfish, but it's true. I'm lonely.
I know that’s silly, because I'm not really alone. I have Seraph to take care of me, and Vance to play cards with and be my friend. Despite this it's true, I am lonely.
Until it wakes, I'll keep it with me. I have not let it leave my person and I won't. Because despite the possibility that this is indeed some joke, it gives me hope.
And we all know that hope is so hard to find.....

 The blindfold didn't hide the fact that Vance was peering over his hand of cards at her. Merci knew he was trying to read her tells, and she was having none of it. She was doing an amazing impression of an iceberg right now. Poker in this house was more of a blood sport then a game, and you could tell by the tension that sung in the air. Vance studied her, and she returned his gaze, both of them sizing each other up, five cards spread fanlike in their hands. One watching the situation might think it amusing that neither competitor turned their attentions on Seraph, attempting to read him was impossible, his face never twitched. The kitsune for once wasn't bluffing, and it was everything she could do to keep herself from jumping up on the table and doing an Irish jig. She had an amazing hand. Royalty stared up at her, in beautiful red, hearts all displayed up in the corner. A royal flush, the poker addict’s best friend. Vance casually turned his face toward Seraph, as it was his turn to call the bet; however the Chinese medusa shook his head gently. "I fold." Inwardly Merci was howling with glee, by the end of this hand, she wouldn't have to do chores for a whole month! The woman's green eyes moved to the pink haired gentleman sitting in front of her. She knew she had him when he shifted his coils, tightening his body in on itself. "Well my darling, I'll see you your two days of laundry." She paused and put a finger up when he started to move as if to reveal his hand. "Wait... I want to raise you three days of dishes..." Oh Merci knew she wasn't playing fair. Vance didn't have it in him to fold, he just couldn't. His voice growled as he spoke "Call. Show me." He dropped his cards spread on the table in front of him. Merci leaned forward and crowed as she dropped her cards on top of his. He didn't have a bad hand, four of a kind, but low numbers. The woman cackled as she pointed at him "Loser!" A soft tsk came from Seraph as he looked over at his friend, "She did beat you..." Vance hissed and cussed a blue streak, as he stared down at the cards on the table. "You have the luck of the damned devil..." He sounded so unhappy. The chore list would end up being mostly Seraph's, as he had lost more then the other two. Vance had always prided himself on winning the most and being able to laze about the house during the month. This time however, Merci got off scott free, the boys had been trounced. The lady of the house rose gracefully to her feet, her hand moving up to hold the ring that had made it's home on a chain around her neck. She put it there so it could always be near her heart, and it could strengthen itself on her energies. "Well boys, I think I am off to bed." her voice was practically purring. Vance watched her and he scowled slowly. "Wait a moment, one more game...” Her gaze leveled on him and she frowned, "you don't have anything left to barter with. You're already doing all of my chores for the month." "Humor me, the next year of your chores. If..." He held up a hand and kept the evil smile on his face, "you give up that ring of yours and let me keep it for the next month." Merci gaped at him. She knew that the medusa were not overly fond of the ring. She knew that they thought it was an unhealthy obsession and had been trying to find a way to get her to put it down and leave it be. Somehow she didn't think they would stoop to this level. Vance chancing the household chores for the next year was startling and somehow very amusing. Was it worth it though? Merci couldn't part with her Diopside; the soul that resided inside of the stone would die if it was parted from her. Wait a second... The soul was in the stone, not the ring. Vance said for a month with the ring. She grinned slightly and sat down at the table again. "Alright Vance, your on." Seraph turned and moved up to the edge of the table, settling in comfortably to watch the match. The pink haired Medusa reached out to pick up the deck and was intercepted by Merci's hand. "How about Seraph deals, so you don't have the opportunity to stack the deck." He drew his hand back and put it up to his chest, looking mock insulted. "I am wounded that you would even imply that I was capable of such a thing." "Oh can it, I know you. You would do it to get out of doing a year's worth of chores." She shot back at him before shoving the deck of cards over at Seraph. The rather stately Chinese medusa picked it up and shuffled, thoroughly. The cards slid over the surface of the table and came to rest in front of the two participants. Merci reached her hand out and picked up her five cards. This... was probably the worst poker hand she had ever gotten. All of them were low cards, no two alike, and none in sequential order. She was suddenly glad she had thought this through pretty thoroughly because, this hand was a mess. Her brow furrowed slightly as she stared at her cards and she heard Vance chuckle from the other side of the table. Her head jerked up and his head was tilted in such a way she knew he was staring at her through the blindfold. "Oh can it and just play the game." She snapped. Merci was not the best person in the world and hiding what she was thinking, and Vance used that to his advantage. Well he would be surprised at the end of the game. She dropped the cards face down and slid them across the smooth surface of the table to Seraph. "Two cards please mister dealer." Seraph slid the cards out for her, and then Vance who asked for one card. He looked up at her and openly smiled, Merci knew he had her. She just knew it. There was no betting, as the terms of the game had been decided before the match. They both lay their cards down, her with a two of a kind, and he with a full house. His long sinuous body lay out over the table as he held out his hand "I believe you owe me that ring...?" Merci bared her teeth at him and grumbled under her breath as she undid the chain from her neck. She held the ring in her hand and nodded, "Alright, fair is fair. You earned it Vance." She held the ring up and slid her nail between the stone and the setting. She had to work at it, and both the Medusa was staring at her in something like shock while she did. The woman grimaced, if she tried to do it with her fingernail it would likely break. She stood up and marched out of the parlor. Both of the Medusa followed her, and Vance was griping. "You said you would give it to me, so give it to me. You’re just delaying the inevitable. I won the ring fair and square so turn it over." She padded down the hallway and into her bathroom. She opened a few drawers and rummaged around until she came up triumphantly with a nail file. Merci pulled her nail free from where she had it in the ring and replaced it with the metal instrument. She slowly pried the setting up enough that she could remove the stone. The little black Diopside dropped free of its metal prison, and her hand curled around it. Merci smiled and extended out her hand, dropping the silver ring into Vance's hand, stone free. "There, in fact you can keep it if you want to. Get a new stone and it might look nice on you. Sorta pimpish." She sounded far too gleeful about it, and Vance pointed at her. "You said you would give it up!" She lost her smile and tightened her hand around the stone. "I did give it up. I gave you exactly what you asked for, the ring. Now you're all upset about it? You should be careful what you ask for." With that she humphed and marched past them to go upstairs. It was nice not to live alone, but sometimes they could be downright bitchy and Merci needed to escape. She could hear Seraph telling Vance that she was right as she trotted up the stairs toward freedom.

 Her house was old, as one could tell boy the beautiful architecture. Pillars, scrollwork, shutters and molding adorned its facade, and inside was all hardwood floors, runners and portraits. Merci walked through the upper story, her hand still curled protectively around the little stone. Against the wallpapered wall in one of the upper hallways there was a hook. This object had a very special use. The red head reached out and retrieved it from where it rested and looked up. In the ceiling was a trapdoor, the hook was used to pull it down. This was the way to Merci's favorite place in the entire house, the Widow's Walk. Once upon a time houses had these put on their roofs, so that women could go up and watch to see when their husbands would be returning. Sometimes they didn't, sometimes they did. Merci didn't have a husband, but this place offered the most amazing view of the stars. She took a deep breath of the cool night air, and stretched her arms up over her head and arched her back slightly as she reveled in the feeling of utter unadulterated freedom. No one could bother her up here, Vance and Seraph learned a long time ago that this place was sacred. Merci dropped her arms and lifted her right hand, opening her fingers to reveal the little Diopside, nested comfortably in the center of her palm. It wasn't bright enough outside for the four pointed star to appear on its surface, instead it was smooth and black. The more time that passed by, the more she thought the whole thing might really be a joke. She just couldn't figure out why they would do it. Why her? She didn't know anything about Athan or that other guy. What would be the point? It was generally bad for business to throw jewelry at customers that might be willing to buy something. Her head rolled back and she reveled in the feeling of the cool night air that brushed against her exposed skin. It was a little chilly, enough that goose bumps arose in response to the change in temperature. She was so distracted by her mind roaming over these things that she didn't even notice the pale wisps of shadow that seemed to be gathering in her hand, and clung to the Diopside. The fact that Vance and Seraph had been so unsupportive of her had also been something that had been nagging at the back of her mind. Since she'd brought the ring home, neither had understood how she felt about it. Merci couldn't help but think they were slightly jealous of the fact she kept that ring on her person every moment of every day since she got it. What else could she do? Even if it was a practical joke she couldn't afford to treat it like one. If she had tossed it in a jewelry box it wouldn't have been close enough to her, the soul would have perished. She heaved a long sigh and her emerald green eyes dropped down to the stone in her hand. Merci was so shocked she almost dropped it. The shadows had thickened around the stone as she had been musing, and now moved around the little Diopside like the arms of a galaxy. The kitsune's legs just gave out and she slipped to the floor, her tail wrapped around her knees as she just stared at the swirling mass in her hand. Her breath kept catching as her mind rolled around the realization that she really had thought it was all a big joke. Sure she had acted as if she believed all along, but in truth after another month she would have put it in a drawer. The mystery that she had felt that night had been ebbing away into reality. Sure there were snake people, and odd floating people, and people with fox parts, and all kinds of oddities. However, despite all that, somehow the idea of a soul feeding off her seemed a little ridiculous. Merci lifted her free hand and used her index finger to stroke the surface of the stone. Somehow she got the feeling that the Diopside liked it. A slow smile spread over her face. This was going to be her baby; she was going to have a creature like that beautiful Citrine cling to her. Merci felt a tear slide down her cheek; she hadn't even known she was crying. The woman stopped petting the gem and wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand. "I'm sorry I doubted you." the woman whispered in a hushed tone. "I'm sorry I almost put you in a drawer. I promise you, I'll never let anything happen to you. Not ever." She leaned down over him as she spoke. Him? Well she had no idea if it was a him or a her, but she would call it a him for now. After all it was Mankind right? Felt weird calling the Diopside her, boats and cars were normally referred to in the feminine and she didn't like it. Calling the Diopside an It was to uncaring, so for now, until she knew better it was a him. The shadows that swirled around the gem were darkening, and as she watched them she realized that they changed colors subtly. At first she wasn't sure, as she thought it might be eye strain, but they did. The wisps darkened to black, lightened to blue and then a green before going back. Her mind couldn't help thinking that maybe he would be like a mood ring. She couldn't wait to show him to Vance and Seraph. Her excitement suddenly dulled. Vance and Seraph were likely to not like this turn of events. They thought that the stone was a parasite, stealing her life away from her, taking precious years off at the end. She had to keep telling them that even if that were true, that it was the years that no one liked to live anyway. It would be taking those years that happened when you were all old and decrepit. The medusa would likely try to take it away from her. She would not stand for it. This creature was going to be like her child, she had the chance to raise him from nothingness into something wonderful. Merci was not going to give them the chance to take that away from her. The kitsune rose slowly to her feet, the shadows following the movement of the stone. It was very awesome looking, as the shadows acted like a tracer, but they kept spinning. The gem rose slowly off her palm and Merci stopped breathing. Holy crap. It could float on its own. Merci knew this was going to pose huge problem in her home. For tonight however she needed time to think, and plan her next move. This was going to take tact and that was something she didn't have. She cupped her hands around her little boy and whispered to him "I'm sorry, but I need to keep you hidden for a short time. It’s going to take time for me to think of how to break this to Vance and Seraph. So you’re going to have to stay in my room with me tonight. We'll deal with them tomorrow." The stars twinkled over head and she looked up one more time. Her mouth quirked into a smile and she mouthed "Thank you" to whatever Deity had decided to give her this chance. She was not going to screw it up. Holding him securely in her hands she descended from the Widow's Walk, allowing the trap door to swing shut behind her. The red headed woman snuck down the hallway and slipped into her room. She was going to need time. Time to come up with a story that Vance and Seraph would buy. She needed time to come up with a way to stop her home from becoming fractured.

(RP took place August 24th, 2007) {RP took place in a Word Processor}
 Merci paced up and down the long upstairs hallway, her tail twitching sporadically behind her. She’d promised the stone that it wouldn’t have to wait long, but it had been a clear two days since it had first exhibited signs of its own life. She was supposed to talk to her house mates and smooth all this out. In the meantime she had been hiding away in her bedroom with little to no contact with the world outside. The kitsune woman had made it a nice little nest inside of an old ornate silver silk lined jewelry box for the little stone; it had been a gift to her from her first husband, and honestly the woman was happy to find a use for the thing. Her divorce with him hadn’t been pleasant and she had been thinking of getting rid of the gorgeous box. Little Diopside had seemed to lounge in it like a tiny king, its shadowy arms almost constantly moving over the silk of the box. Merci got the feeling that those shadows were like the feelers on an insect, allowing it to explore the world around it. The last couple nights, she would wait until all sounds of movement had ceased. She snuck up to the Widow’s Walk, the little box cradled in her hands and curled up, her legs under her, to look up at the sky. It seemed to her it was the only time the little stone was truly still. Its shadows still moved, like the arms of the Milky Way around itself. The woman got the distinct impression that it was actually thinking. Merci went back and forth between thinking that she was crazy, a stone couldn’t possibly think, to feeling proud of her newfound soul child. But this was unfair to the Diopside. The redhead was not going to let her house mates make her afraid to walk around her own home. She snapped back to the present, and paused in front of her bedroom door for the umpteenth time. The red head opened her hand from where she had it curled carefully around her tiny charge. She couldn’t put it off any longer. Vance and Seraph had made their attitudes quite clear. Vance had avoided her altogether, which felt odd, as she and the stubborn pink haired snake man enjoyed the banter the other provided. His silence more then anything he could say portrayed just how unhappy he was with her. Seraph on the other hand had been much more practical about things, but then he usually was. He never seemed to be too ruffled by anything, and unless you knew him really well you would think that the situation didn’t ruffle him in the least. The only way she could tell was the slight shift in his body away from her when she walked into a room with the both of them, from him that was as good as a right hook to the chin. The two day standoff was going to end now. Merci cradled the stone in her hands and didn’t stop and turn around when she headed toward the end of the hallway. She marched down those stairs with purpose, after all she was supposed to be in charge here right? What is the worst they could possibly do; they were already practically giving her the silent treatment. Not to mention that she was finding that her little luxuries were being tapered off. Seraph was an excellent baker and he loved to do it, the Chinese medusa would putter around the kitchen all day happily. Since Diopside came home, however, there were no cakes, no cookies, and no confections of any kind! The sweet tooth would kill her before their cold shoulders would. Her combat booted feet clomped down the hallway and into the parlor. Honestly the original intention of this room had been to strictly entertain company, but the current inhabitants of the house used this room as the main focus of life. Seraph had taken care of hiding all the touches of technology. He had the Television behind a wall hanging, the stereo was set inside a curio of sorts, and the telephone was actually hidden in a writing desk. The very traditional snake wouldn’t put up with anyone trying to change anything about the room, and it had taken Merci threatening to pull his scales off one by one to get her huge comfy leather couch in it. The two of them were curled up on said couch, watching one of the sappy love stories that Merci secretly loved so much. She paused in the doorway and let herself get caught up momentarily in the heartbreaking moment when two souls find each other forever. She herself had never been so lucky, five husbands and four divorces and one funeral later, she had really given up on ever being a part of a duo. Vance cleared his throat to get her attention, his blindfolded face turned toward her, the top hat on his pink hair at a rather careless angle. “Was there something you wanted, Mistress” He only used that tone of voice when he was being a smartass, and her temper immediately flared. This did not bode well for the negotiations to come. “Actually, yes there is.” She clasped her hands in front of her, making a small cage for the little floating stone. The last thing the fox woman wanted was either of them to catch sight of him to soon. “I want to talk to you both, and I want you to listen to what I have to say.” She took a deep breath and plunged on before either could say anything. “I know how you feel about the stone; you have both made that painfully ******** clear. However I do own this house, and technically you answer to me. It isn’t going anywhere. I’ve thought about this long and hard, and the danger that it might bring is worth the potential rewards. I am not going to let either of you take that away from me.” She paused for another deep breath before she continued babbling into the silence, “I know how you feel about change Seraph, but sometimes change is necessary for the progression of life. We can’t stagnate, and let nothing new and exciting in because it might shake things up a little bit. Vance, I know you’re scared for me, even though you won’t admit it. It’s touching honestly, but I need to do this for myself. I know damned well you wouldn’t respect me if I were a coward and walked away from an adventure that promises to be this exciting.” Vance and Seraph sat silently, both blindfolded faces staring at her from over the back of the couch. Seraph let out a small sigh, which was about all the response she was going to get. The woman took that as a good sign; he didn’t get up and leave the room, so he was likely ready to give this thing a chance. Considering she just spelled out that the little tirades were not going to change her mind, she hoped that Vance would be so forgiving. And of course, he wasn’t. “What the hell do you mean I wouldn’t respect you? You have a damned parasite thing living off your life force! It’s sucking your soul away little bits at a time. It is not okay to make a sacrifice like that; you have no idea what it is going to end up doing to you.” Vance shifted his sinuous body off the cushions and rounded the couch slowly, using his superior height to try and intimidate the small kitsune. Merci stepped back, mostly because she hated it when he tried to manipulate her with size. “But it is my choice. I have made it, if you can’t and won’t respect me, then at least accept that I have made up my mind and it isn’t going anywhere.” “It’s got you bewitched, it’s best to destroy it now. After awhile who knows, you could go though withdrawals like a drug addict or worse. Get out now, and let us get rid of that horrid little thing.” Vance’s blindfolded face turned down to look at her clasped hands, as if he could see right through her flesh to the tiny little stone. The red headed woman defiantly opened her hands, the little tendrils of shadow unfurled around the stone as it rose to float just slightly above the skin of her hands. They twisted and turned for a moment as if stretching, before they slowly calmed down to rotate around it like they usually did. Vance flinched back away from it and instinctively put his hands up. “What the hell is that thing?” His voice was flat, and his face twisted slightly with the disgust or horror he must have been feeling at that moment. Merci could imagine all the things passing through his mind, because despite himself she was sure he cared for her. “This is the stone Vance, and I am going to take it back to the shop I got it from to ask some questions about it. I swear, I will try and do this intelligently alright?” “I don’t know if you’re capable of doing anything intelligently, let alone something like this. Here.” Vance pushed two fingers into one of his coat pockets and produced the ring that had cradled the stone before Merci popped it out. “Take this, I bet you were just supposed to nurse it back to health. They probably want it back to sell to some rich person now.” The thought of losing her stone to someone actually made her heart feel cold and heavy. She imagined walking in and handing back the ring and stone to the owner. Merci wasn’t sure she could do it; in fact it sent chills down her spine. It was so fragile, how could she be sure whoever took it from her would treat it with the some love she felt? Love. What a silly word love. It meant so much and some would believe she was using the word lightly. Hell she was worried that she was using it flippantly, but it was the truth. Plain and simple. Her booted feet slid back on the wooden floor and she offered a mute nod. Her throat was closed up and she couldn’t seem to force words around the lump. Few people could get to her like Vance, it’s like he always knew just what to say to piss her off. Merci almost missed his quiet words, “If you are so damned set on keeping it, fine. I would suggest however, that you not expect me to be happy with your decision.” Without answering she turned on her heel and walked away from the parlor, and up the stairs. The woman needed to hide; she resented him for intimating that she was stupid. Worse then that though, she was now utterly terrified to take the little thing back. She knew it was the right thing to do, but she didn’t have to like it.

(RP took place March 13th, 2007) {RP took place in the Shop}
 Merci` Merci pushed through the front doors to the store and looked about warily. She hadn't been back here since that night a couple months ago, when the ring had been practically dropped in her lap. She didn't go all the way in, just peeking her head and shoulders in at first. She felt like she was casing the joint, and in all honesty she hadn't done something like that in years. All was quiet and calm. The red head didn't see the demon, the crazy dirty bloody man, or Athan. Having deduced that she was safe, Merci slipped in through the doors, her hands curled around something rather protectively as she did so. Maybe she could leave them a note? Kipestshin Citrine's ears gave a twitch. She was sleeping on her bonded's chest as she always did. He was asleep in the breakroom. He didn't move. She could have sworn she heard something. .... But maybe it was just the wind. Or a mouse. The little shaddow wormed her way to the door, Allon was still asleep. Oh what fun she would have, catching a mouse to suprise him with! She floated, her eyes searching for a target. If she could have made a sound, she would have squeeked when she saw Merci instead of a mouse. Reyna Crelos While the shop appeared to be empty, almost abandoned with no one to watch the front end, it was in fact currently occupied by none other than Mystic Topaz. Out of courtesy to his bond, he had agreed to watch the shop while she ran an errand -- something about arguing with a shipping company and customs within another dimension. Either way, he was temporarily hindered with being responsible for the shop as a whole. Part of him imagined how fun it would be to simply wreck the place entirely, but while it might tickle him that Athan would be furious, it would not be nearly so fun to see his bond angry. With that he brushed his mischievous thoughts aside for the time being and phased into view just behind Reyna's desk. His shoulders heaved in a sort of heavy sigh. He really wasn't a people person. '.. hello,' he greeted Merci with a sort of half-hearted enthusiasm. His bright eyes narrowed faintly as he gazed over at the woman. How interesting. Another lost soul was joining their ranks. Merci` Merci had been making her way over to the counter, hoping to find something to write on to leave a note for Athan. She honestly just wanted them to know that the soul seemed to be getting stronger. She hadn't expected something to appear out of nowhere. She was so startled her hands opened, and the little wisp floated on it's own. "F..." She stopped herself and cleared her throat, "You scared me." The woman reached up and put a hand on her chest, breathing slowly. The wisp hovered where it was for a moment, as if unsure what to do now. The multicolored shadows swirled around it slowly. Merci's eyes moved toward it and then back to Mystic, "I was just going to leave Athan a note, umm.. the little thing seems to be getting better." She finished rather lamely. Kipestshin Citrine hid in the shadows. Thestone that floated from Merci... she knew that one. Quickly she scurried behind Mystic and hid behind his cape to get a better look. She did hope her Allon was asleep still. Reyna Crelos Mystic paused momentarily in replying as he slowly shot a backward glance towards Citrine. If he could have smiled for her, he probably would have. Such a curious little kitten! 'It's not a thing,' he corrected her, 'It's a shadow. In wisp form.'Merci` Merci nodded slowly, "ah, I see. I wasn't entirely sure what to do with him now. I mean he's definately alot better then when I got him. Am, well am I supposed to return him?" From her pocket she produced the ring that he was set into until recently. "I brought the ring just in case." The little wisp moved closer to Merci and the colors shifted a little more quickly. It didn't hide behind her, and something about how it hovered a little in front of her made the woman think that perhaps it was curious about Mystic and Citrine. Kipestshin Citrine floated up to Mystic's shoulders and wrapped herself around him like a scarf. " She... wants to return him?" the shadow blinked, " my Allon would never return me... " her nose turned up, but her eyes kept watching the floating stone. Her hands kneeded Mystic's shoulder. Reyna Crelos Mystic chuckled quietly at Citrine's remarks. He reached up to gently pat one of her little hands as he once more turned his attention upon Merci and her newly awakened wisp. 'I suppose Athan didn't fully explain the situation you've found yourself within,' he replied smoothly, 'Figures, really. But for the record, no, you are not supposed to return him. He is.. well.. bonded to you. To break that bond would mean the death of him and well.. you probably wouldn't die, but I doubt it would be a pleasurable experience for either of you.'Merci` Merci sucked her lower lip into her mouth for a moment, worrying at it with her teeth. Maybe they had been wrong. Vance and Seraph have told her that perhaps Athan hadn't meant for her to keep the little stone. After all she hadn't paid for him, so that meant he had to be a loaner. The logic had made sense at the time, but as Mystic explained things she nodded slowly. "I see, I knew that he was weak and needed help. I suppose I didn't really sick around long enough for him to really get to explain things to me fully. I was a little out of it at the moment." The wisp moved a little closer to the counter.. dipping down a little lower as if trying to sneak up on the other two shadows. The shadows around it swirled slowly, curling around him in two trails. Kipestshin " if you want to die... my Allon can kill you both." the little shadow smiled like she somehow thought that was good. She caught her bonded's silhouette from the corner of her eye and skittered over to him. Allon gave her a pet, then looked at Mystic and Merci'. He turned to leave. "We... will be back later." with that he left. Reyna Crelos Mystic did his very best to maintain his composure and keep a straight face as the duo left. The scary part was, he knew she was being perfectly sincere and generous in the offer. 'Understandable,' he went on as he idly watched the little wisp dart about, 'Essentially, you are to this wisp as to what Reyna is to me and what Allon is to Citrine. They are our guardians.' He paused in his explanation with a small frown creasing his brow. That was the easiest way he knew of to enlightened her as to what was really going on. Merci` Merci looked down at the wisp as it pressed itself close to the counter, and floated up until the shadows curled up over the top. They carressed the surface, and slowly the top of the gem peeked over. He was obviously trying to be covert about checking out Mystic. Merci arched her brows, dragging her gaze up to the Shadow behind the counter. "So, one day it'll, I mean he'll... get bigger?" she spaced her hands out to about the size of Citrine. "I'm sorry, I'm not normally this stupid. I'm just having a little trouble wrapping my head around all of this." Reyna Crelos Mystic's expression seemed to melt into a smirk as he watched the little wisp. 'Basically. He'll be like Citrine, myself, and all the other shadows that have been awakened.' His bright eyes softened somewhat as he reached out to lightly touch one of Merci's hands. 'All he needs from you is your company. And, well, a little energy but once he is older you do more sharing than stealing, rest assured.'Merci` Merci couldn't help it, she smiled at Mystic and nodded slowly. "I have a couple of, well, friends that live with me. They aren't exactly excited about him staying with us. I think I let them freak me out a little bit. Is there anything special I should do to help him?" If he'd been a regular baby she wouldn't have a problem. Those you change, feed and shove in a crib. Something told her that she was going to have do something to help him get stronger. The wisp floated a little higher, inching across the counter to get a better look at Mystic. He was just so curious as to how he got so big. The shadows swirled around him, moving in front of him like feelers. Reyna Crelos The older shadow tentatively reached out with one hand to brush his fingers through the fine, misty darkness that surrounded the little stone. 'No. That's it. We are.. hm.. strangely self-reliant, yet entirely dependant on our guardians to lend us strength. If that makes any sense at all,' he murmured softly. Merci` She opened her mouth to say something and paused, watching the two of them interact. The woman's brows furrowed, but she seemed fairly sure that the older shadow wouldn't hurt her little boy. It took Merci a moment to realize that she had tensed up, but she couldn't help it. After all he was her charge and Diopside was dependant on her for protection at least right? The wisp paused in it's movements and the shadows moved to curl around the finger. The colors shifted a little more quickly as the stone seemed to be tentatively feeling Mystic. Like the antenna of a bug or the whiskers of a cat, he was investigating the older creature. "Is he bothering you?" Merci said quietly, ready to reach out and pull the little one back. She wasn't sure what sorts of things would hurt him yet, and she felt awfully overprotective. Reyna Crelos 'No,' Mystic answered honestly with a faint, bemused look on his face. He could very nearly feel the tension bleeding off of Merci and he wasn't even bonded to her. Merci` The shadows curled up from around the gem and wrapped themselves completely around the tip of Mystic's finger. They moved gently, little tendrils of it reached up further, as if testing the waters. He encompassed the senior shadow, and the muted colors swirled gently. The Diopside hovered just over the surface of the counter, not moving much at all, as all of his attention seemed to be on his exploration. Merci couldn't help feeling a little protective, but some of the tension left her body when she realized that Mystic wasn't making any sort of offensive move. The mother bear syndrome was something that she knew was not likely to leave any time soon, considering her housemates. Vance and Seraph were going to make this a living hell, and while she knew they were doing it out of a misguided attempt to protect her, she still wished they would just leave well enough alone. The woman sucked her lip into her mouth for just a moment before she released it and spoke quietly, "Will he be able to protect himself? I mean will he have any way to defend himself if something were to happen to him while I was distracted for instance?" This was something that was sort of important for her to know. Reyna Crelos 'Hm,' Mystic pondered, soft telepathic voice barely audible, 'Being able to hide within darkness, unseen does have its perks. I'm not so certain what harm a wisp could befall lest the stone itself was damaged.' He withdrew his hand and rest his chin in one hand as he peered over at Merci curiously. 'I wouldn't worry too much at this point in time. Be more concerned when he's a child.' The expression that fluttered across his face spoke of mischief. Children in general were a handful. As an older brother he could easily attest to that when he was charged with watching after Sam. Children of the Fiend variety were at a whole different level of chaos. There was no way to restrain them unless they ran out of energy -- and then it was only a matter of time before they were at it again. Merci` So he would be able to hide, that was good. Merci could already feel the knot in her stomache starting to unclench. She loved her boys, but they were going to give her ulcers one day. She leaned down and looked at the gem, resting her chin on the surface of the counter. "Does he have a name?" The little wisp pulled back slightly, realizing it wouldn't be able to get any further up the finger and satisfied with exploring what was available. The arms of shadows uncurled and started swirling around him again. The gem moved slowly toward Mystic, obviously still curious and looking for another part of him to explore. "I get the feeling he likes you...." Merci offered and rolled her eyes up to look at the bigger shadow. Reyna Crelos The older Shadow seemed to smirk faintly, bright eyes fairly radiating amusement. 'A name? Only that of our stone. A few have been given nicknames by their bonded, but other than that...' he trailed off with a shrug of his shoulders. 'But speaking of names,' he went on in a polite, gentlemanly tone, 'My name is Mystic. A pleasure to meet you.'Merci` Merci gasped and put a hand up over her mouth, she had completely forgotten. She blinked a couple times and dropped her hand down to her chest, "I am so sorry, I totally forgot to introduce myself. My name is Merci, it is honestly a pleasure to meet you." She straighened up and reached down putting a hand under the Diopside and scooping it closer to her. "You will have to forgive me, honestly I think living with those two snakes makes me forget what polite company is." The Diopside was scooped up, and the shadows wirled faster and the little tendrils reached and curled around Merci's hand as if to steady itself at the sudden movement. Merci smiled down at him, "umm.. one last question. When will he be able to.. well.. talk to me?" Reyna Crelos He gave a quiet chuckle and leaned his arms atop the desk. 'I believe I can relate,' he answered. Charles was a handful himself. Really, he had just now gotten used to the medusa's presence, but he was still midly resentful of the fact that they were housemates. Even so, it was Reyna's house, and she had consented to allow him to live there -- even if her permission had been begrudgingly given under duress. 'For now, his only form of communication will be empathy. You will feel what emotions he shares with you,' Mystic continued in explanation, 'He will have use of basic telepathy when he becomes a child. He cannot readily read your mind unless you share it, and he most definitely cannot read the mind of others regardless. Unless Athan lets something slip, but that is highly unlikely.'And he only knew the latter for fact because he had attempted to do so. Athan hadn't been pleased, but Reyna found it hilarious.

 Merci was peeking over the edge of the table, the bridge of her nose pressed to it. Her fiery red hair curled down around her face and the fox like ears stuck straight up off the top of her head. The kitchen was Seraph’s domain, and everything sparkled under his care. The appliances all looked brand new, the chrome winked in the sunlight, and there was the quiet, calming hum of the refrigerator in the background. The woman however, was fixated on the little stone that hovered just bare centimeters from the gleaming tabletop. The star on the surface of the smooth rock refracted the glow coming from the nearby window, almost making it look like a four pointed eye looking toward the light. The tendrils of shadow were all the more striking as they trailed around Diopside, like the arms of the galaxy, or the ribbons of a dancer. The woman squinted her eyes, and one of her arms appeared from beneath the table. In her fingers was a seedless green grape. She dropped it, and slowly pushed it toward her little boy. The redhead wasn’t sure what souls subsisted on, other then her own energy. She didn’t want to be a neglectful mother, and so far today she had tried to feed him a potato chip, a piece of candy, small hunk of lunchmeat and kernelled corn. He’d reached out, and enveloped the food she had offered him with his little “arms”. However each time he would slowly retract them, leaving the rations completely untouched. The grape rolled toward Diopside, and didn’t stop until it actually knocked into him. His little shadows failed, much like someone would windmill their arms to keep their balance. He wobbled, and the stone touched down on the table and spun slowly on its back. Merci straightened a bit and propped her chin on the tabletop, and she reached a hand out and stopped him from spinning. The shadows reached out to take hold of the offending piece of fruit, cocooning it. What was this? It had hit him so hard he hadn’t really been prepared for it. The surface was so smooth, but it didn’t seem to have the energies that the big creature nearby did. He liked his big thing; she kept him safe and gave him a nice comfy place to rest. Better though, even then all that was the warmth he got from her. He’d been so cold before, and so weak, but he was starting to feel better.
The smooth thing lost his interest and he stopped trying to touch it. He wasn’t sure what this exercise was all about, but everything his big thing put down wasn’t nearly as fun as when she took him up into the dark, cool air. He liked the shiny points of light; he wished she would take him up to see them again now.Merci slid herself into the chair and sighed gently. Maybe he wasn’t supposed to eat, but she had one more thing she wanted to try before she gave up on feeding him completely. The fox woman leaned over and picked up sundae bowl and a can of lemon lime soda pop she had gotten out earlier. Her fingernail slid under the tab and the loud popping sound seemed to echo in the almost sterile kitchen. She poured a bit of the carbonated beverage into the bowl, mostly because the lip would be easier for him to navigate then an actual glass. The redhead picked the little bowl up carefully she put it down right next to Diopside, she pushed with her legs and slid her chair back across the ground to rest her chin on the table one more time. She understood that he likely didn’t need sustenance like she and the boys did. Merci had however been hoping that he could find energy from outside sources, other then just from her. It would have made living with the two glowering snake men that much easier, pointing out that he didn’t only feed on her like some sort of tiny little energy vampire. The screaming match she and Vance had gotten into when she had returned to the home with her little stone had been bloody epic. Her ears still rang four days later. It didn’t matter how much Merci pointed out that Diopside was tiny and wouldn’t need that much of her energy, Vance had screamed that size didn’t matter. Something she never thought she would hear coming out of his mouth. One of the shadows got a little close to the sundae cup and got hit with the fine spray that seems to float around a fresh carbonated soda. It flinched back away, like the tentacles of an anemone, pulling in on itself to avoid the possible danger. The smile that curled Merci’s lips was honestly a rare one, she’d had little enough to smile about recently. Shock rippled through him, what had touched him! The bowl was making weird little popping sounds and it touched him with something he couldn’t see. He paused; completely unsure what to do, he pulled himself in as close as he could. Would his big thing let him get hurt? He doubted it, but this stuff was so weird! He reached out slowly and jerked back just a touch when one of the bubbles popped right next to him. Tentatively, he reached across the surface of the liquid, and he was surprised that it didn’t hurt.
It was just so noisy, and active that he had confused it for something dangerous. This was a much more fun thing then the other stuff she had presented him with.Merci sat bemused as her little Diopside inched closer and finally reached out to cover the surface of the liquid with his little tentacle like shadows. She was fairly sure by now that none of the soda would be consumed, but she wanted to make sure. Watching him play, her mind wandered. Mystic had told her they didn’t have names, that the guardians of the stones chose names for them. Somehow that seemed rather sad to her, lost souls, alone with no name. Diopside was so impersonal too, way to long and cumbersome for such a curious boy. Ralph? Gross, that wouldn’t do. She had known a Ralph once, he’d worn glasses and always had this sort of pissed off look. Eugene was too normal, though he reminded her a little of her friend Eugene, she’d known him so long ago. Nickname would likely be better then giving him a new name altogether, something like… Dio! Merci grinned and pulled the soda away from the curious little wisp. “Don’t play with your food.” She said in a light tone, before she lifted the cup to her lips and drank its contents. “Come on my little Dio. Let’s go watch a movie.” She scooped him up into her hand and disposed of the grape and dishes. Seraph would be in shortly after to clean up after her, she wasn’t worried about that, but she didn’t want him to think she didn’t respect what he did for her and the household by blatantly ignoring his likes and dislikes. The fox lady walked across the house and bounded up the stairs, Dio’s little arms reaching out to wrap around her thumb and pinky finger as she carried him along for the ride. Merci retreated into her room, to watch the corny sappy love stories she loved to watch so much. Her little boy cradled in the satin interior of his own little jewelry box. For once, all was peaceful.

 Merci walked out of her bedroom and rubbed her hand through her blood red locks. Her eyes were barely open as she shuffled off toward the upstairs bathroom. She’d spent a lot of time on the road yesterday, and hadn’t gotten home until late that night. The windows upstairs didn’t provide much light, as the only radiance outside was still the soft glow of predawn. The lack of illumination didn’t affect her much, she knew her house inside and out. The fox woman shuffled into the bathroom, and she turned on the water in the shower to let it warm up while she undressed. Merci wasn’t looking forward to the morning that was going to follow. She stepped under the spray and shut her eyes tilting her head up toward the ceiling, letting the water trail down her body. After about an hour with the scalding water pounding on her body she started to feel awake. Merci stepped easily out of the shower and rubbed herself down. The terry cloth towels absorbed the drops that still clung to her skin, and left her dry enough to shimmy into her clothes to greet the day. As she slumped out of the bathroom the smell of fresh coffee hit her nose and a smile crept up on her features. All the gods in the heavens would bless Seraph for his penchant for early rising, and his intimate knowledge of his housemates need for java in the mornings. Merci tiptoed down the steps and inched toward the kitchen, hoping to put of her meeting with Vance as long as possible this morning. She had news he was going to be very angry with. A steaming mug met the woman as she pushed open the door to the combination kitchen and dining room that served her household. The fox woman was not fond of the formal dining room that Seraph had set up just in case there was ever a soiree, and had opted to put in a small dining table and chairs for the homier feel. Her fingers wrapped around the ceramic and she brought it up to her lips. Wonderfully, it seemed to achieve what her shower could not, and her eyes opened for the first time all day. Happiness in the form of a sigh escaped her lips and she turned around so she could lean back against the counter. Seraph moved slowly around the room, cobbling together a healthy assortment of breakfast foods. Dio hovered nearby, following Seraph’s movements as if he were trying to help the already efficient Medusa with his morning tasks. Merci and Vance provide a healthy dose of bitching before they finally dug into the grape nuts and yogurt that Seraph insisted they eat. Vance hissed with his usually morning cheer as he slithered through the doorway and across the tiles, gravitating toward his own cup. Merci hid her grimace in her mug and glanced away from him. This morning was going to be hell, but she would get it over quickly. The top hat was missing it made the pink haired medusa look a little shorter then she was used to seeing him. His one long piece of hair was tangled up and wound around his arm to keep it out of the way as he card shark immersed himself in the caffeine that would help him be his usual bright and sunny self. She took a deep calming breath and offered a cheer filled smile to Vance, “Good morning Vance. How did you sleep last night.” His response was a low grumbling growl; obviously he would need two cups before he would be anywhere near awake enough to handle the news. Merci poured him another cup helpfully, “I thought you would be interested to find out what I brought home with me last night.” Seraph’s head turned, and even behind the sunglasses that served as blinders, Merci was sure he was watching her carefully. “I was indeed curious.” His softly accented voice wafted over the room, “You arrived home so late however I couldn’t wait up for you.” Merci threw a look at Seraph and she shrugged a shoulder, pointedly ignoring the softly hissing Vance. He was always at his worst early in the day. “That’s alright; it took awhile to get settled in when I got home. I’ll likely take a nap later today. She should probably be down soon though, so please try to be nice?” “She?” It was the first understandable word Vance had spoken all morning. “What the hell do you mean she? We have to deal with another overbearing harpy in this dump?” “Harpy am I?” A green tinted medusa leaned in the door and was obviously giving Vance a nasty look. “I think you have your mythology mixed up. Harpies are part bird.” Merci raised her voice over the answering hiss from Vance, “Boys please! This is Maili. She will be living with us,” She put a hand up to silence Vance when he opened his mouth to yell. “Before you say anything, yes, this house is big enough for the four, er, five of us. We will get along!” Maili moved from the doorway over to the counter and reached out picking up the little stone that had been floating there quietly. She lifted him gently and entertained herself with the little wisp while Merci and Vance argued in hushed whispers. The green skinned woman didn’t seem at all perturbed with her greeting, and actually seemed to be enjoying Vance’s antagonism. “She isn’t leaving, and neither is Dio. You are being ridiculous. You are the one that always complains about having nothing to do. Well now you can make yourself useful by helping Maili settle in.” “I am not going to help that viper settle in anywhere. Three of us was plenty for this hole in the wall, then you had to bring that creepy little-“ “He isn’t creepy, Dio is sweet. He doesn’t complain and he isn’t your problem so why don’t you just relax! You need to learn to take things in stride.” “I can’t take things in stride, I have no legs.” “You know exactly what I mean. Quit making waves! Drink your damned coffee and get used to the fact that your not in charge around here.” Seraph and Maili had been watching the two combatants getting closer and closer, till they were nose to nose and their voices had reached a volume that could likely be heard down the street. “Do they always fight like this?” Her head tilted toward Seraph as she spoke quietly, wondering if he could even hear her over the decibels being thrown around. The Asian medusa nodded slowly, “I am afraid so. You get used to it.” Dio was obviously not happy, the little shadowlike arms where curled around Maili’s fingers. The color patterns swirled more quickly as the volume got louder. The newest member of the household tried to whisper sweet reassurances, but it didn’t seem to be working. She slithered forward and ran a finger up the middle of Vance’s spine, and he froze and stopped talking mid sentence. Her melodic tone seemed to curl into the sudden silence, “Your upsetting the child.” With those words, she moved out of the kitchen. The small wisp was still in her hands. Merci was floored, and then suddenly a huge smile swept across her face. Finally someone else in the house was on her side about Dio. She felt relief like she had never felt before slide down her spine and warm her body from the toes up. Maili would be a godsend in her life, helping her deal with the boys, and at that moment Vance and his petty squabble seemed so insignificant that she scooped up her coffee cup and followed after the only other female in the house. Maili was coiled up in the upstairs hallway, her index finger stroking the top of the stone in a fashion that reminded Merci of someone stroking a child’s head. The swirl of colors was quieted, and Dio seemed content to stay where he was in her hand. Merci’s feet froze at the top of the stairs and the smile that cracked her face downstairs found its way to her lips again. This would be perfect, and exactly what she needed in her life. She was thrilled that she had agreed to take the woman into her house. “Thank you...” she said as she moved closer to the two newest additions to her home. “Vance can be such a b*****d sometimes, I’m sorry he was so rude.” The other woman just laughed easily, “He’s a kitten, trust me.” Merci shook her head in amazement, “I’m glad you’re here, sometimes I feel so outnumbered.” Her eyes dropped to Maili’s hand. Dio’s little tendrils were wrapped around her fingers and he seemed so happy. “He doesn’t, bother you? You don’t think he’s creepy?” Maili and Dio had met the previous day, when Merci had picked the medusa up to bring her home. It had seemed odd but they had an instant connection, and the female medusa had been happy to cradle him in her hands all the way home. Maili’s arm reached up and she pulled down the stairs that led up to the widow’s walk. With a quick smile she pulled herself up the stairs, “Don’t fret over them. Let me handle my own problems.” And with that the green skinned woman disappeared up the stairs with Dio, so they could watch the stars disappear one by one to be replaced by the blazing beginning to a glorious new day.

 It was all too easy. Slipping through the house like a shadow, into the room of the woman that liked to think she ruled with an iron fist. I could hear her breathing deeply and evenly as she uncurled and rolled away from me in her sleep. I held my breath and slid across the floor to the little jewelry box that I was supposed to take, inside was her greatest treasure.
My hands closed around it, the stone moved inside of its own accord but I shut the lid on it. I would not allow that thing to escape. I pulled the ornate box against my chest, and just as quickly as I came, I escaped. Merci stretched and rolled over; the sun shining on her eyes shook her out of her slumber. She couldn’t remember the last time she had slept so well. Sitting up she stretched and shuffled her feet into some overly stuffed slippers that Vance had gotten her a long time ago. He told her it freaked him out when he had to rub along the floor that her bare feet touched. She didn’t spare a glance toward the dresser as she hunkered out of the bedroom to go through her morning rituals of getting dressed and brushing her teeth. Vance and Seraph were in the kitchen having coffee when they heard the scream from upstairs, both of them jerked upright and stared at the door. A short time later, Maili slithered into the room, her arm around Merci. “It’s alright, calm down. He’s probably around here somewhere alright?” “No it isn’t alright! It isn’t like he’s just gone; the whole jewelry box is missing. Dio couldn’t pick that up and walk away with it!” Merci’s face was tear streaked and her voice was highly pitched. Her green eyes centered on the boys and her voice dropped into a violent growl, “Where is he!” Seraph’s face smoothed into its usual emotionless state, “Merci, I haven’t seen him since last night when you retired for the evening. I didn’t hear anything while I was recharging myself, and I am afraid I have no idea where he went.” The pink haired medusa smiled widely, “The soul sucking little b*****d gone then is he?” the last word was said on a sneer. Vance didn’t believe that Dio was male or female, and that once he was done with Merci he would move onto the rest of them. “Parasite is better off wherever he is, probably lost his taste for you Merci Love.” Maili held Merci back as the fox woman tried to launch herself at Vance, she was wild with panic. “Vance, where did you put him?!” “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t know where he is, why would I take him?” Vance pulled out a letter and dropped it on the counter. “This came with the mail this morning; it was addressed to you with no return address. I didn’t open it.” Merci was growling low in her throat, a menacing sound to be sure, but she was mostly harmless to the overgrown snakes she lived with. Maili inched forward and took the letter from the counter; she ripped it open and settled little reading glasses on her nose. Her eyes glanced down the page and she shook her head. “It says they are sorry they had to come get him in the middle of the night, however he had gotten what he needs from you and they were going to resell him. It looks like it came from a jewelry shop of some kind.” Her voice was quiet, and she was obviously confused. The red headed fox rubbed her hair and she let out a silent scream as she walked out of the room and slammed into her sanctuary. Seraph let out a breath and no one knew he was holding, “This isn’t going to be good, she is going to be depressed for days.” Vance let out a bark of laughter, “What do you mean this isn’t good? This is PERFECT. That little leech can’t use her soul to feed off of anymore. Just let her stew, she’ll get over it. Human memories are like a sieve she won’t remember he even existed in a few days.” *** Maili handed Merci another aspirin and watched her rub her forehead. “Merci, are you alright?” “No!” she snapped quickly, and then shot her a look of apology. “I’m sorry. I just, I’m edgy. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. You know whoever wrote that letter was wrong, I called that shop and they said they never repossessed him.” Her voice was fairly even, but a little higher pitched then her normal tone. “Well then, that means that someone had to have come in and taken him. It wasn’t that long ago, he’s only been gone a couple days. We’ll find him.” Merci knew damned good and well where he was, but Vance guarded his domicile like it was the pope’s personal bathroom. She wasn’t sure if he would have buried him somewhere, or given him away, or worse, mailed him to Abu Dhabi. “Maili? I have a question for you…” her voice was quiet, but a sly smile slid across her face and she started laughing softly. “Will you distract Vance for me? So I can search his room?” The green medusa stared at Merci, and for a moment the laugh caught her off guard. Being without Dio was obviously hard for her host, and she wanted to help her. “I suppose I can, he shouldn’t be too difficult.” The fox woman just started laughing, as she got up to her feet and nudged Maili out of the room. “Now?” “I… guess I could.” “Great! Thank you, you just get him away from his doorway.” Merci pushed the woman up the stairs and down the hallway toward Vance’s door. “And keep him away for awhile, I need time to search.” Maili watched as Merci ducked into the bathroom and she squared her shoulders. Somehow, she had been dumped in a loony bin. These people were all so different that she was still trying to get her bearings. Vance was loud, obnoxious, and stubborn. Seraph was quiet, serene and thoughtful. Merci, she was caring, lazy, and determined. Little Dio was her absolute favorite of all of them. He was always content to sit in her hand and hold her fingers; it broke her heart that he was gone. Merci seemed to think that Vance took him, and he had made to bones about his hatred. Maili had no reason to doubt the assumption. The green skinned woman raised a hand and banged on Vance’s door, waiting for him to respond. The door was thrown open and he stared out at her, through the cards that covered his eyes. His face contorted into confusion and he stared at Maili, “What do you want?” Maili put her hands behind her back and gestured toward the hallway behind her. “I was hoping you would go up on the Widow’s Walk with me and watch the sun set. It shouldn’t be that long from now, and I hate being up there alone. Dio would have gone with me, but he seems to have been… Repossessed.” Vance slithered out of his room and shut the door behind him so she couldn’t look past him into the room. “Why are you asking me? Why don’t you get someone else to do it?” He sounded a bit suspicious. She turned so she was facing slightly away from him, “Merci is still upset about Dio, and Seraph is busy with his evening chores. I thought it would give us some time to get to know each other a little better. You intrigue me Vance.” He straightened up and a smile curled his lips, “Really, well when you put it that way I can I refuse a lady.” Vance leaned forward and offered his arm to the smaller and more petite woman. Perhaps he had all this figured out the wrong way, it might be nice having a woman around. Maili’s tail “accidentally” tapped the bathroom door on their way past as she led Vance up onto the roof of the old Victorian. Merci peeked out, and waited for the two of them to disappear before she bolted down the hallway and into the room that Vance had staked out as his so long ago. It smelled dusty, she couldn’t quite describe the smell, but she was shocked at how clean and organized it was. The fox woman had been prepared to go through things thrown all over the place, but there literally weren’t many places to hide a small box that wasn’t in plain sight. He wasn’t under the bed, in the drawers of the dresser, under the dresser, anywhere in the closet. Dio wasn’t under the rugs, behind the curtains, under any loose floorboards. Merci had gone through the mattresses the pillows; she felt the wallpaper and looked out the window to see if he was hanging against the side of the house. One thing was certain. Dio wasn’t there. After almost two hours of searching, Merci had worked up a sweat. Her hands were shaking and she felt like she was going to pass out. The natural light outside and long since gone and Merci was propped up against one of Vance’s walls breathing heavily. She didn’t want to live without her Dio; she had been so sure he was here. Being away from him was painful, more then she had thought possible. It wasn’t just emotional pain of separation from someone you love; it was like someone was trying to saw a part of her off but she wasn’t sure what part. She could hear them arguing outside, “I am going back to my room now, quit trying to stop me!” “But I’m hungry; can’t you get me something to eat?” “You’re a big girl get yourself something to eat!” The last part of that was louder as the door was shoved open and the light was switched on. Merci’s head lifted to look at the two of them and Vance’s face went from shocked to angry. “What the hell are you doing in here?” Merci opened her mouth to say something and her knees gave out from underneath her. She sank to the floor and shut her eyes. “Vance, please give him back.” The pain in her voice was obvious. Maili pushed past Vance and picked up the woman that was sheltering them. “Great job Vance, look at her can’t you see she’s in pain?” “It isn’t my fault she’s hurting! She just went through my stuff didn’t she? I can’t ******** believe this. Where is the privacy?” Maili’s voice never rose in pitch or volume, “Maybe if you had a heart and could see that you’re killing her she wouldn’t have had to go through your things.” Vance’s face twisted up, “I’m killing her? That little parasite is killing her not me. I’m not the one with a straw in her soul trying to suck it out like a damned juice box!” “Can you get over yourself and your bigoted behavior for two minutes? Where is the jewelry box? Merci told me he stayed in a jewelry box.” “I have no bloody idea, get out! Both of you get out of my room. MY room, MY space! Don’t ever come back in here you… you…. Worm!” Vance couldn’t think of something insulting enough to call Maili as he practically moved the two of them out of his room and slammed the door in their faces. Merci was limp in Maili’s arms, and she was unsure what to do with her. Without Dio it looked like her will to live had left her as well. She slid down the hallway and moved into her bedroom, placing her on the bed. “He’s right you know.” The voice made Maili jump and she turned around to see Seraph in the doorway, his hands clasped in front of himself. “He’s right about what? Seraph can you get me something for her head? I think she passed out.” Seraph just moved into the room, his white coat half unbuttoned. “Vance really isn’t the one to blame for all this. I know he gets very vocal, and emotional, but he isn’t a very good liar.” The confusion must have been on her face because Seraph opened his hands. In them was a small jewelry box, and he opened it to show her a stone. The stone was silent, lying in the bottom of the box without any movement. The normal arms that seemed to wrap around it like the arms of the galaxy itself seemed to be gone. “I had no idea that it would kill him.” Maili choked and moved forward the snatch the box away from Seraph, “I can’t believe you did this! What did he do to you to deserve this?” Her accusatory tone was clear as she moved the jewelry box over to Merci. She turned it over and the Black Diopside fell into her fingers easily, there was no sign of life in him at all. “He was sweet; he wasn’t dangerous you would be able to tell if he was dangerous. What did you do with him?” Seraph didn’t move, or sigh, his face emotionless. “I took him away from here, does it matter to where?” The green skinned medusa placed the dark gem on Merci and she wheeled on Seraph, giving him a piece of her mind. “And he called me a worm; you are vile and disgusting that you would hurt the woman that has given you so much this way.” Distracted as the two were, they didn’t see Merci’s hand move up and wrap around Dio. She curled up on her side and huddled her body around him protectively, even in her sleep, using herself to shield him from the animosity in the room. Seraph shook his head, “what is done, is done. It cannot be undone. You and I will leave her to her grief.” Maili felt a little guilty for yelling in her room, she spared them a glance. “I just hope I get to be there when she wakes up and hits you.” Was all she said as she slithered toward the door, making Seraph go with her. And as they slept, a small shadow curled around Merci’s thumb.

 The person in the mirror wasn’t someone she recognized. Usually the Kitsune was fairly pretty, with milky skin and blood red hair that framed her features in soft wavy tresses. Her beautiful emerald green eyes were wide and practically jumped off her face, with a cupid bow mouth that she usually only used lip gloss on. Today however, there were dark purple bags under her eyes that looked like bruises. Merci’s skin was even more pale, giving the appearance of a porcelain doll. Her hair was still that same shade of red, but it seemed to hang about her face in stringy strands. For the guardian, the weeks following Dio’s brush with death had moved slowly. Merci’s anger had ridden the surface like lightning drives the storm. It had been days before the woman had been able to sleep again, she had spent her time watching the door for the vicious snakes that lived in the house around her. Never had she thought they would be so nasty as to actually hurt her precious little stone. It was the insult more then anything else, she had taken them in and treated them like family. Yeah, alright so she and Vance had their problems, but Merci had always thought of it as lighthearted bickering that happened between brother and sister. The fact that it had been Seraph, the one she had never even suspected. He was always quiet, always respectful! How could someone that truly respected her do something that hurtful? She stared at herself for a moment and then shook her head and turned her attention to the little jewelry box. Dio had been in her hand, or tucked in close to her body since she had gotten him back. It had been only in the last two weeks that he had finally begun moving away from her again, using his little jewelry box to rest in. The little stone started going back up to bask in the glow of the moon and stars with Maili again about four days ago. Since then he had started to perk up considerably, his tiny little shadowed arms reaching out to touch the unknown. It had broken Merci’s heart when she had gotten him back and he had hidden himself from the world. He wouldn’t touch anything, and like a sea anemone if something other then herself brushed the darkness around him, he would pull back in on himself. She was so glad that it seemed it was going to take more then that to destroy the natural curiosity that surrounded him. Her hand reached out and closed around him, and she smiled when the colorful shadows squeezed between her fingers to wrap around them. Merci lifted him and planted a very gentle kiss on the surface of the stone, it was just a brush of her lips, but it seemed to make Dio very happy. She put him back down and released him before she got up and gathered her clothes and bathroom essentials. This was the morning she finally tried to leave him alone for a moment. It was giving her something akin to a panic attack. What would she do if he disappeared again? Honestly she would skin snakes, and make a really really big purse. Her ears flattened when she reached the door and she paused, and she turned back to look at Dio. Merci didn’t want to do this, but she knew that she was being a little overly ridiculous about it all. She couldn’t cling to him all the time. A huge sigh escaped her before she pushed out of her own room to tend to her morning rituals. *** He felt a lot stronger, much better. He had been so scared, and felt so weak when he was away from her. It had been so dark, and so lonely. Dio had felt himself slipping away slowly as his energy was used up. Being back with her made all that go away! No more pain, he felt good. No, actually he felt better then good, he felt wonderful. He knew she cared for him, he could see that clearly from how protective she had been recently. He moved from the jewelry box and floated over to the bed his guardian slept on. He lowered himself to the cotton sheets and curled in on himself, the shadows wrapping tightly around the stone. He felt different today, he wasn’t sure what it was exactly, but something. It made him feel a little sleepy, so the shadows quieted around him and stilled as he let himself rest. *** Merci walked back into her bedroom, her hair wrapped up turban style in a towel on top of her head. It was obvious that she had just crawled out of a very hot shower, as he skin was pink from the heat of the water. She froze just inside the doorway as her eyes went to the jewelry box and he wasn’t there, actually she hadn’t actually known that she’d screamed till Maili shoved through the door and almost knocked her over. “Merci?” The sound of the medusa’s voice startled Merci out of her shock and she turned eyes a little to wide upon the green lady. “It’s empty.” Maili had no idea what she was even talking about till the fox woman pointed at the empty jewelry box. It was then that she saw him, curled up upon the bed. Maili couldn’t find words so she reached over and turned Merci so she could see Dio laying on the bed. He looked different. Very, very different. Merci pushed away from the door and took two steps toward the form on her bed. The brilliant colors of his hair were the first thing she stared at, sparkling like a diamond, or like the stars in the heavens. Maili cleared her throat, “I’ll just, um, leave you two alone.” The medusa so wanted to close the distance and pick up the little shadow, and crush him against her body in a hug. Something, however, told her that Merci would need time with him alone before she got to snuggle the tar out of him. So the green snake woman slithered her way back out of the room to run interference with the boys. The guardian knelt next to her little boy, and she hesitated before she stroked fingers through the brilliantly hued hair resting on her sheets. He was so amazingly perfect that it brought tears to her eyes. She drew back quickly when he shifted and lifted his head from the bed beneath him, his hair falling down over one of his deep burgundy eyes. It traveled around the room before it settled on his hands, which were pushed into the mattress to hold himself in a type of push up. The visible eye widened and there was a sound in Merci's head that she could only classify as a horrified sound. She put a hand up to her head and shook it, obviously his changes were a little to much for her. She hadn't really gotten a full nights sleep in a few weeks, it wasn't surprising she was hearing things. 'What... what happened to me?'The voice in her head was that of a little boy, a scared little boy. His eye moved to look at Merci as the words spilled through her mind. It took her a few moments to realize that they really did belong to Dio, and it wasn't just her imagination. "Oh my god, you can talk. Well of course you can talk, that other creature in the jewelry store could talk too. I just didn't expect it, I guess..." She trailed off as she watched Dio. The confusion was evident in his eyes as he tilted his head, 'Yes it would seem so, this makes things easier. Do you know what happened?'Merci couldn't help a very large, and proud smile when she replied "It seems your growing up my little darling." Dio's eyes watched her for a moment, and if she looked carefully she could see the other shining eye behind the curtain of hair. 'I've grown up.' he seemed confused, and his voice was tired. The maternal instincts took over and Merci shushed the little boy and urged him to lay back down, "Shhh, we can talk about this later alright? It's best you sleep now. I'll stay near you." The redheaded woman crawled up on the bed and curled herself around Dio, afraid to really touch him to much. As much as she hated to admit it, part of her believed he would just simply disappear again if she shut her eyes. But despite both their best efforts, time and exhaustion caught up with them both. Dio seemed to relax into his guardian, who was soon fast asleep with a very satisfied look on her face.

(RP took place December 16th, 2007) {RP took place in the Guild}
 Reyna Crelos Mystic flinched as he stepped outside of the store he had just been in. Fluorescent lighting, while irritating, was nothing in comparison to true daylight. It figured that on the rare occasion he felt the need to leave the house, never mind his room, that there wasn't a single cloud in the sky to allow him a little refuge from the bold, bright light of the sun. Of course he preferred to be more active at night, but how was he supposed to run errands at midnight when most decent stores worth visiting were closed by dusk? It most certainly was not convenient by any means, but with his age, not only could he leave his guardian on his own, but he had grown some tolerance to the light. Even still, he kept the hood of his cloak firmly over his head and stuck to what few patchy spots of shadow he could to avoid the midday sun. He sighed in relief when he reached his next destination -- a bookstore. He was not one to truly appreciate material items, but books, beloved books! His room was very quickly turning into a library in itself. There was nothing better than escaping into a good story or reading interesting articles. The topic hardly mattered to him. He was more than content to learn and read about anything and everything he could get his hands on. That, and reading was a fairly quiet past time, and bookstores, libraries, and other such places had the tendency to be not only quiet, but dimly let to lend to the mood. It was perfect! Merci` Merci sauntered down the sidewalk, one arm laden with about four over-sized shopping bags hooked over it. The woman was struggling to keep up with her ward, Dio, who was darting quickly from shadow to shadow. He would occasionally disappear into a building and then whisk back out on his search for a comfortable way to travel down the well lit street. Keeping an eye on him and juggle three different shopping lists was becoming tedious and the redhead was fairly sure she couldn't keep it up much longer. Seraph, Vance and Maili hardly ever made it out of the house, and it was always up to her to be sure they were restocked on the things that kept the household running. Beer, nuts and pretzels mostly for Vance, Seraph's shopping lists were always huge, and listed all the health food he insisted the rest of them eat. Maili was a surprise because she only really asked for a short list of the newest romance novels. Merci wished people didn't tend to stare when they overgrown monsters went out on the street, because it would make her life so much easier to deal with. She rounded a corner and stopped dead at the empty street. Dio had ducked into another building, but she had expected him to pop right back out as he had been all day. Seconds ticked by and Merci got a little more frantic, it was like trying to follow a less messy version of slimer! Merci backed up and she looked back on the street they had just left and caught the barest glimpse of Dio's colorful tail disappearing around the side of a building. The woman wheeled around and just about dropped the bags in her haste to catch up with her little boy. He had been so good all day, true he scared the pants off one of the women in the frozen foods section of the grocery store but beyond that he hadn't left her side. Merci sprinted after her ward. *** Dio could feel something, he knew it had to be around her somewhere. He'd been so bored. It was fun getting out of the house for awhile and seeing new things, but it wasn't nearly as much fun as this was going to be. The little shadow thought he could remember the feeling a little bit, he'd felt it sometimes when he hadn't been quite so strong! He gravitated toward it, darting in and out of the shadows. Merci would catch up with him, and she was the last thing on Dio's mind as he finally saw what he had been looking for. He was bigger, and was hiding under a piece of cloth, but it was definitely what he had been feeling before. Dio flew down the street, literally, along the walls so he wouldn't have to have the glare of the sun on him. His uncovered hand reached out and tugged the hood back on Mystic, curious to see who it was that he had managed to track down to make his day more interesting. Reyna Crelos Had he not been thoroughly engrossed in the rather worn looking second-hand paper back novel he was reading, Mystic likely would have spied the other shadow first. He did not jump, nor was he shocked when he felt little hands tug back the hood to his cloak. He slowly glanced away from his book and then turned to peer intently over at Dio. 'Surely you are not here without your bond, little one.'Merci` Dio's unhidden eye was full of curiosity as his head shook 'No she is coming, she's fast.' The last was said on what almost sounded like a giggle as his eye turned to look behind Mystic. 'Are you out without yours?'Merci slowed down when she saw Dio harassing Mystic, her panic slowly subsiding. She wasn't sure whether she wanted to scream at Dio or just be relieved she'd actually managed to catch up with him. The woman adjusted the bag on her arm and approached both of them cautiously. "I'm sorry about him. I have no idea what got into his head." Dio ducked behind Mystic and peeked around him at Merci, his glee obvious that he had manged to rattle his bonded. Reyna Crelos 'I am,' Mystic replied in a smooth, calm tone of voice, 'But I am of an age where being close to my guardian at all times is not a necessity in order for me to continue on in existence.' His bright violet eyes glittered with an amused light at the little shadow's antics. It reminded him of Citrine, and with that thought a sort of contented look washed across his face. He stood from where he had been lounging and turned towards Merci when he was addressed. 'It is simply the nature of children,' he answered as he floated forward before settling upon the ground with human-feet. Especially children of his species. They were all but notorious for their mischievous behavior, though he did not seem intent on readily offering up that bit of information for the rather frustrated guardian that stood before him. 'That appears rather heavy, do you require help?' he asked. He did not wait for a reply. Instead, he hefted a few of the bags the woman was precariously balancing in her arms with little to no effort whatsoever. Being bonded to a demon had its perks. Merci` Merci gratefully moved some of the bags over to Mystic and she sighed quietly, "Thank you so much, trying to take care of Dio and the three lumps I have at home is getting to be a little hectic." She muttered ruefully, "Though that probably isn't something that I should be complaining about." Dio clung to Mystic's cape and he pulled it so he could hide under it too. 'You use this to keep the sun off? I don't like it, it's too bright.' His voice was so quiet as he spoke, 'Don't listen to her, the snake people aren't lumpy.' He peeked out from under the cloth, his hair standing out a little bit from the static cling. Merci rolled her eyes, "I didn't mean it like that." she replied defensively, "I know they can't slither out on their own but that doesn't mean I have to like doing all their shopping for them. Damned Medusa." She muttered darkly. Reyna Crelos Mystic's eyes narrowed in a tic of irritation, but it was neither directed at Merci or the shadow-child that was merrily exploring his cloak. 'Believe me when I say I understand. I too am forced to endure the whims of a Medusa.' It was no secret that he and the resident Medusa of his household had the tendency to clash. Really, it was he that did the clashing most times as Charles was all but oblivious to, well ... everything. His expression softened to a look of amusement as Dio continued to prowl about beneath his cloak before peeking out. 'I also am not so fond of the sun. It is in our very nature, little one.'Merci` Dio curled a corner of the cloak around himself and hid under the cloth, giving Mystic a look that quite literally translated into 'I'm happy under here and only a bomb will get me out.' Merci tilted her head at Dio and she offered Mystic a small smile, "Well some of them aren't so bad. I have three to deal with, only one of them is really insufferable." She rolled her eyes toward the storefronts nearby and her face lit up. "I should duck in here and grab Maili her books, Do you think you could keep an eye on Dio for a moment?" She grimaced and looked down at the little shadow, "He just seems to happy under your cloak." Dio nodded quickly and huddled a little closer into Mystic's side, as if putting his two cents in on the matter. Reyna Crelos Mystic seemed to smirk faintly at the child that was hiding in amongst the flowing darkness that was his cloak. 'I can watch him for you, though we will keep near. It would be best,' he insisted in his soft, telepathic speech. He reached idly to ruffle Dio's hair fondly before quietly trailing after Merci. 'Eh... what's got you all... warm and fuzzy? I'd appreciate if ya didn't share. You're makin' me ill.'The elder shadow chuckled quietly to himself, a noise that was quite inaudible to his two companions as his guardian's annoyance filtered through their bond. Only Reyna. 'I have run into a fellow Shadow and his guardian. He reminds me of Sam.'He got the distinct impression of a mental 'hmph' at his reply and that served only to amuse him more. His moment of pleasure was ruined, however, when once more he encountered the light of day. It made his eyes sting and his entire form ache. Perhaps he had been away from Reyna too long. Being out and about in broad daylight for so long had drained him to a degree. He shuffled the bags in his arms gingerly before glancing towards Merci. 'I don't suppose you might be able to pause in your errands after fetching this book. I am in dire need of rest. Preferably in darkness,' he spoke up as he reached gingerly to lift the hood of his cloak over his head, 'Perhaps you both might accompany me to my home. It would not take but an instant to get there.'Merci` Merci picked up a book from the shelf and sneered at the cover, It had a picture of an over-muscled man with windblown hair holding a petite scantily clad blond in what looked like a passionate embrace. She would never understand peoples fascination with these types of books. She picked up about four more, checking their names against her list before she glanced up at Mystic. "That would be just fine actually, I'll call Seraph to come by and help me get the bags home. After chasing Dio I don't think I can lug all this by myself." She felt a little self conscious walking up to the cashier to pay for the items. Merci had never been one of those girly girls that read these types of things, gun magazines and automotive manuals had been her nighttime reading. Dio happily snuggled under the cloak floating around behind Mystic. His burgundy eye locked on the older shadow, studying him carefully. He mimicked some of his movements before his attention was pulled away by the colorful covers of the hardbound books they were passing. 'We're going to your home?' The little shadow's mind voice was quite, almost a whisper as he voiced the question. Merci took the new bag and hooked it over the same arm that carried the others. The older woman turned to look at Mystic and her tail swang happily behind her, "Alright, I'm done shopping. I'll call Seraph while we walk. If you would be so kind as to lead the way?" To be honest she was thrilled that she would be getting to be social outside of the house for any length of time. Reyna Crelos 'Yes,' Mystic answered simply to Dio's quiet query. He did not elaborate on his answer any further than that. He was not one to volunteer information unless it was merited or asked for directly. He nodded in response to Merci as they headed out of the store entirely and onto the street. Mystic walked a little ways towards the end of the block where there were not as many people. It would be best if no one got in their way. He would prefer that uninvited guests remained just that -- uninvited. He reached out with one hand and called for a bright, shining rune. It spun in a circle that widened quickly enough to allow the three of them to step through. He seemed to smirk faintly as he reached towards Merci with one hand and to Dio with the other. 'Shall we?' Merci` Dio happily wrapped both of his arms around Mystic's forearm, the long sleeve on his left arm pulling up just enough to see fingers, but nothing more. His burgundy eye widened, he wasn't afraid, more that he was insanely curious. What was that thing? What did it do? How could it just appear like that? Could he do something like that someday? Merci reached out and gingerly look Mystic's hand, not entirely sure about this mode of transportation. Mostly because she wasn't sure how to tell Seraph where to go. Course all the odd Medusa would need is an address, he could find anything from there. The fox woman's tail bristled slightly, betraying the look of confidence that formed her features. Dio summed it all up in two words, 'That's neat'Reyna Crelos One step through and the portal winked out of existence. There was the briefest moment that felt like a gust of wind, a rush of feeling, and then they were there before a house in amidst what appeared to be a boggy forest of sorts. Mystic appeared rather pleased with himself and glanced towards his two companions. 'We are here.'Merci` Merci felt a little queezy at the sudden rush of feeling, and she realized she had no idea where they were. She glanced over at Dio as he peeked out around Mystic at the house. The redhead pulled her tail around and smoothed out the fur, trying to make it unbristle at her unease. "Where exactly is here?" All Dio knew, was that was insanely awesome. He practically vibrated with his excitement at being able to experience something so different. His head swiveled around trying to take everything in at one. As he looked around his excitement ebbed, and he found himself practically molded to Mystic's side. Something about this place made him very unhappy and he curled the cloak around himself completely. Merci frowned when she saw Dio's reaction and she hesitated toward them. "Dio?" Her voice was colored with her concern. Reyna Crelos "You're just outside of Bass'ken Lake," came a gruff reply. Reyna stood a few feet away as she unlocked the gates that led up to her home to allow her guests to pass through. Due to the wards and spells placed upon her home to keep it safely tucked away within the swamp, it was not possible for Mystic to transport them directly onto the property itself using any sort of spell. The demon offered Merci a faint smirk before her gaze settled upon the little shadow that was hiding in amongst Mystic's cloak. "My, my," she all but purred, "Look who's out and about nowadays. I'd say you've certainly taken good care of him." She turned on her heel and headed back up the path towards the house and idly waved a hand over her shoulder, indicating that they ought to follow. Mystic beamed quietly. He adored Reyna. 'Shall we?' he replied in a polite tone of voice as he moved to usher Merci and Dio inside. Merci` Merci pulled out a cell phone and dialed a phone number, all the while watching the cloak that Dio had curled himself up in. The conversation with Seraph was short, she told him where they were and that he would need to come pick them up. Luckily she hadn't gotten Vance on the phone, that was an argument she didn't want to have right now. She picked her way over the ground and walked toward the house after the demon woman. "Thank you. I can't tell you it's been easy. He seems to have held up rather well though." Dio was making very quiet unhappy sounds. He didn't like this feeling, at all. He wanted it to go away, it made him afraid and he wasn't sure why. He burrowed his face into Mystic, trusting the older shadow to protect him from whatever it was out there that was making him so nervous. The little shadow couldn't figure out why they were all so calm? No one else seemed to have the same feeling he was, and he found it very very confusing. Merci looked up at the house and the property, "You have a very nice home." She meant it. The Fox woman actually wished she were a little more out of the way. Reyna Crelos Mystic's brow furrowed in a deep set frown. Unease and distress seemed to radiate off of Dio. He reached for him as he would Sam or any other child and pulled him up into his arms and petted his hair gently. 'This is a safe place, little one.'He trailed after his guardian and held the door open for Merci in a gentlemanly manner before releasing his hold on Dio. He was about to say something further in order to comfort him but was caught short when he suddenly found himself being held in someone's arms. "Mystiiiiii~iiiiic! You brought COMPANY! You are such a dear. I do so love company. Let me go and make us all some tea, and isn't he just the cutest thing I have ever laid my eyes on!" Charles, or Die as he preferred to be called, rambled as he pinched Mystic's cheeks and ruffled his hair. "Do introduce me to your friends! I didn't know you really had any! They're both so cute!" Mystic in turn scowled darkly as he squirmed out of the overly friendly medusa's grip by going entirely transparent. '.... this is Ch-.... Die,' he stated dryly, looking rather put out. Merci` Merci slipped through the entrance to the home and she glanced around when she heard the voice practically squealing Mystic's name. Her ear cocked backward at the sound before she turned her head to eyeball the, for lack of a better word, very metrosexual medusa squeezing the older shadow. A smile cracked across her face and she hand to raise a hand to cover her mouth so she didn't laugh out loud at the obvious irritation rolling off Mystic. She often felt exactly the same way with Vance. Dio felt better when he was curled into Mystic's arms, and slowly he started to relax. His eye rolled up and he looked at Die with obvious curiosity. He liked snake people, after all he lived with three of them. He separated himself from the older shadow and he moved over to start inspecting Die. The feeling of unease was starting to ebb now that he was separated from the dreary landscape the swamp provided, and in the nature of a child it was quickly forgotten. Reyna Crelos "Die, sweetness," Reyna spoke up from where she was casually leaning against the doorway to the kitchen, "Why don't you help make some tea for our guests?" "Ohh! Absolutely! It would be my pleasure!" the medusa spoke up excitedly as he clasped his hands together with a rather pleased look upon his face. He fairly writhed with excitement as he slithered his way into the kitchen and past Reyna who resisted the urge to grin outright at his antics. "You'll have to excuse him," she spoke up, "He's easily excited." She pushed herself off of the wall that she was leaning upon and moved to sit on the couch. Mystic followed after her and reached to drag Dio along by one hand. "So," Reyna began again, "He hasn't given you too much trouble so far, has he?" She offered both Merci and her ward a fanged grin, "He's turned out awfully cute, regardless." Merci` Dio was going to trail after Die so he could get a closer look when he was tugged away. His head turned toward Reyna and he immediately changed targets. She was neat looking too, and she had those hoops on her ears just like he did. He floated closer to her and started examining her, without touching her. Merci couldn't help a small sigh as she moved over and took a seat, "Actually he's not been half the trouble that my other house guests have been. Between the three of them they make little Dio here look like a veritable angel." She could still remember the headaches and body aches she had gone through without Dio around. He'd recovered well once they had been reunited, but she would never fully forgive Seraph for taking him away in the first place. "I hope you don't mind I called them to come pick me up. And knowing them, they won't be long. I'm not that far away from here actually and Vance drives like he should be in some sort of speed derby." Merci's eyes moved to Dio as he lifted his sleeved arm to reach out and touch one of Reyna's ears. She cleared her throat, "Dio, that is probably not a very good idea." The little boy pulled his hand back quickly and he turned to look at Merci, 'But she has the metal in her ears too, I just wanna look.'Reyna Crelos Reyna chuckled quietly under breath. If that had been Mystic as a child he would have flat out yanked on her ears. In fact, she was shocked he hadn't attempted. She merely continued to grin when her own shadow sent her a rather perturbed look. 'I wasn't that bad,' he huffed defensively. 'Sugar, you were an adorable, purple train wreck.'"I don't mind the extra company," she replied. Normally she wasn't too fond of people, but she was inclined to indulge her guest. She was a fellow guardian, after all. "Oh goodness! Did I hear that more people are coming?" Die shouted from the kitchen as the sounds of banging pots and pans sounded and the distinctive clink of china. "I better make some more tea then or there won't be enough and that would be absolutely dreadful! Not enough for all our guests, that would just be rude and inconsiderate and that we simply cannot allow ourselves to be, oh no!" Mystic huffed quietly. They were his guests. His guests!Merci` Merci glanced away from Dio, and glanced toward the kitchen. It sounded like he was doing a little more then making tea to her, but she assumed that they knew what they were doing. Dio watched Merci turn away and he quickly reached out with his uncovered hand and he stroked the topside of Reyna's ear. His eye squinted slightly as he tried to feel with his fingers how many holes she had. It was a lot, more then he had. Merci looked back toward Reyna and she opened to her mouth to scold Dio, when the door was pushed open and Vance slithered in. It had only been a few minutes since she called, and Merci hoped that they had already been in the car. Otherwise Vance would have made record time, and probably ruffled a few feathers in the local law enforcement. The three medusa's piled through the door, Maili shoving Vance out of the way as she passed by him. "Make room you overgrown Python." she practically hissed. Seraph's face was serene as he made his way past the other two to come to rest near the woman that cared for them. "Don't worry, we were already in the car. I had thought you might need someone to come pick you up in town." Merci let out a huge sigh of relief before she glared at the three of them. "First of all your guests and you should have knocked before you came in. Secondly, I can tell Vance drove by that silly look on his face and I told you." Her finger leveled at the top hat wearing snake man, "That you were not allowed to drive my cars anymore." Vance snorted a bit and he waved a hand at her, "Don't worry about it, it's not smoking much." Reyna Crelos Die bustled out of the kitchen just in time to see the three other medusa slither in the door. He held a rather elegant silver tray in his hands that had a small pile of bite-sized cookies on a plate along with a dainty tea set. For the very first time since their first house guests had arrived, he was entirely silent. He had not ever encountered another of his kind in his rather young life. Mystic actually managed to look a bit concerned for a moment. Charles. Quiet. Really? He stood from where he was lounging next to Reyna and phased directly through one of the walls to help the medusa bring out the rest of the sweets and tea cups for tea he had readied. Die slithered daintily over towards Merci and Reyna and sat the tray upon the coffee table before shooting the silver haired demon a worried look. He sniffed a bit dramatically and twisted his hands nervously in front of him. "Y-you're not... r-replacing me are y-you?" he squeaked. Quiet, eerie laughter seemed to emanate from somewhere within the kitchen which made Die hiss in displeasure. "No dear," Reyna snickered, "You are not being replaced. They are guests as much as ... Merci.. wasn't it?" 'And Black Star Diopside,' Mystic chimed as he re-entered the room and set the additional tray upon the coffee table, 'Dio for short.'Merci` Vance opened his mouth to say something and Maili gave him a shot in the ribs. "Can it." His head turned toward the green skinned woman and he hissed at her. "I swear one day I am going to get over not hitting a lady. Then your really gonna get it." The look on Maili's face when she turned toward him was somewhere between taunting and amused. She looked like she was going to say something but Dio happily swung himself away from Reyna's ear and plowed himself into the medusa's arms. She looked a bit startled before she cradled him against her chest. Seraph cleared his throat first and he offered Die a look, "Please excuse them, they seem to have no manners. My name is Seraph, The one with the top hat is Vance, and the lady is Maili. I am sure you have met Dio and Merci." He gestured from the little shadow who seemed pleased as punch to have Maili to sit on, and the kitsune already seated. Through the entire exchange Seraph's face never once showed any emotion at all. Merci heaved a sigh, "I really didn't think all three of them would come, honestly. I was rather hoping at least Vance would stay home." Vance let out a small sniff and he ignored Merci, instead giving his attention to Die. "Whats your name?" His voice was gruff but he was at least attempting to be nice to this obviously skittish creature. Reyna Crelos Charles cleared his throat and adjusted his hat as he offered Vance a charming smile. "My name is Charles, but I typically go by Die," he replied smoothly as the worry on his face and the tension in his shoulders seemed to bleed away, "Pleasure to meet you, sweetness." Introductions aside, he seemed rather content to resume his role as a host. "Please have a seat and make yourselves comfortable. Perhaps have some tea?" He fairly beamed with pride. He did a great deal of cooking when Mystic allowed him into the kitchen. He did so enjoy baking! He coiled himself down upon the couch next to Mystic who simply glared balefully at the other man. He. Did. Not. Want. To. Cuddle. Alas, Charles was entirely oblivious to the general dislike and malice that the shadow radiated. Reyna was simply amused by the turn of events. It was not often she had guests that were quite so... interesting. That, and Dio was undeniably adorable. It also seemed that the fact that she believed him to be so cute seemed to make Mystic mildly jealous. Not enough to lash out at the child, but just enough to make him shoot her irritated looks. Merci` Dio glanced up at Maili who moved over to the couch and settled next to Merci on it, her body curled up so only the tip of her tail twitched against the floor. He was quickly loosing his focus on her since she wasn't giving him her full attention. His eyes shifted back over to Mystic and he floated away from Maili and back over to the older shadow to play with his hair. Merci couldn't keep the smile off her face as Vance skirted the couch and kept it between him and Die. Something about Die just screamed that he would snuggle if he got within arms distance. Vance was as fond of snuggles as the next guy, but something else about Die said that molestation might not be out of the question either. Seraph settled down and leaned his body against the back of the couch, next to Vance. "Thank you for taking care of Merci and Dio. I am not sure she has acclimated to taking care of him yet." Merci made a face and opened her mouth but Vance interrupted her. "He won't hold still long enough for you to get a clear look at him. I still say she should have left him in that bloody store." Maili shot an evil look at Vance and hissed threateningly, "Shut it Vance." Reyna Crelos Reyna chuckled quietly under her breath at the antics from the medusa that had now infiltrated her living room. It was good to know that Charles wasn't the only one that was, well, flamboyant and rather over-the-top. In fact, knowing that his kind seemed to be... that way all the time made a little more sense. Mystic, however, looked rather displeased at being surrounded by snakes (however charming they may be!), especially since Die was curled up against his side. His expression softened however when Dio managed to squirm in between them and began to play with his hair. There was no way to deny that the little Shadow was nothing but adorable. He glanced over at Vance with a rather smug look. 'The only problem with that would be that once awakened, remaining within one's stone is not an option. If it were, I doubt I would be here today.'"Ain't that the damned truth," Reyna remarked with a fanged grin. She had wanted to maul him on more than one occasion when he had been a child. And then a few times after when he was older, but that was another story entirely. Merci` Merci glanced at Reyna and leaned forward, she clasped her hands in her lap as she watched the other woman. "I think Vance's main concern is me and my health. They believe that Dio is going to suck my soul from my body and leave me nothing but an..." she paused and glanced back over her shoulder at Seraph, before she turned back to the other woman, "emotionless husk." Vance bristled at Merci's rather blatantly pointed remark about Seraph, "He isn't emotionless, mess with his stainless steel and you'll see." Seraph's monotone voice cut through the chatter, "I am not insulted Vance, I don't need your protection." The other man shut up and folded his arms, looking pissy. Maili couldn't help a smirk as she watched Dio, he was trying to braid Mystic's hair by looking over at Maili. She kept her hair braided up on top of her head sometimes. Dio pulled one pile of hair over the other, twisting it more then braiding it together. His burgundy eyes were fixed on what he was doing, the entire outside world was nothing but white noise to him. He didn't even know they were talking about him. Reyna Crelos Mystic idly glanced back at Dio with a sort of long-suffering look. He typically did not do much with his hair. Rarely did he even need to brush it as for whatever reason, being what he was, it did not change much nor tangle in a way the average human's would. He was fully prepared now that his his hair was likely going to be gnarled and difficult to unbraid for, well, however long it took him to undo whatever it was Dio decided to do. Sure, he could attempt to stop him, but the little child was radiating a sort of content, and that was something he did not feel inclined to ruin. Reyna simply grinned before she turned her attention back to Merci. Her brow furrowed for a moment as she contemplated her words. "Mmm... that's not likely. While as a wisp and his current form now as a child he may use some of your own energy, there's no way for him to steal your soul," she replied smoothly. No, no, that was where her expertise as a demon lay. Not that she had a mind to do so. It would hardly be polite! That thought made her smirk. "In fact," she went on in explanation, "He'll begin sharing his own energy with you once he's a little older." 'A shadow's form has no means to contain it, so it is shared,' Mystic added. Merci` Merci turned a triumphant look on Vance, who had the grace to look even more grumpy then he did before. His voice was smooth when he retorted, "Lovely, so we're stuck with the little energy sucker forever." Maili casually reached back pinched Vance on the arm, making him jump and say things that Dio should probably not hear. Luckily the little shadow was totally engrossed in his hair creation. He floated up and tugged Mystic's hair over so he could try and put Die's bangs into his masterpiece. The braid was gnarly, with short pieces sticking out here and there where he dropped pieces of it and didn't notice. He turned his burgundy eyes from head to head trying to figure out his little self made dilemma. Merci shook her head, "It's nice to just know he will grow stronger, He's always been a little fragile. Poor thing has had to many brushes with death for my taste. I just hope he won't be so dependent on others soon, so if something happens to him he won't fade away." Reyna Crelos The older Shadow groaned inwardly. This was not going to end well. Die was beginning to squirm and hiss in protest and batted at the child's hands in response to having his impeccably styled hair toyed with. "Ahem... little .. Dio, was it? Yes! Sweetness, do try to .. well.. not mess with my hair. You've really no idea how long this takes me in the morning. Looking this good, while it does come by me naturally, is no easy feat!" the medusa explained with a bit of a huff before he wriggled up off the couch and away to fetch more snacks from the kitchen. Mystic was left to fend with Dio on his own and he offered the child a wry look. 'Don't mind him. He's rather prissy.'Merci` Dio cocked his head at Mystic before he started tying a knot in the end of his hair to keep it held fast. 'Prissy? Like Vance?' He sounded honestly curious as he asked the older shadow. 'He doesn't like anything of his touched.' For the first time, a note of something other then blissful ignorance colored the child's tone. It was obvious that the male medusa bothered him almost as much as he bothered them.Merci frowned and turned to look at them, towering over the couch. Both of them looming like they were trying to stare down something horrible and dangerous usually pissed off the fox lady, but today she was to tired to yell at them. Maili wasn't though. "I am always so surprised that you two are scared of such a tiny little thing." Her voice was like silk, it slid across your skin and left goosebumps in it's wake. Her blindfolded face turned back to Reyna. "You have been such a gracious hostess, Die as well has been a blessing. I would like to voice our appreciation. Dio doesn't get to spend a lot of time with his own kind." Her face tilted over to Mystic, watching him carefully in his treatment of Dio. Merci gave Reyna a lost look, obviously she was not as in control of her circumstances as she wished she were. Reyna Crelos 'Mmm... more like he is entirely focused on his appearance,' Mystic replied smoothly before idly glancing towards Maili. Now if only Die was as charming as she was, perhaps he'd find the snake's presence far more tolerable. Reyna said nothing in response but simply smiled and nodded towards Maili. She glanced towards Merci and offered her a smile as well. In situations such as this, there often wasn't a way to take control of the situation. It was best to go with the flow -- easier said than done, of course. "I have more cookies!" Die chimed as he slithered back into the room and brushed past the other two male medusa that were looming ominously before the couch. He seemed to take no mind whatsoever to the obvious tension that had filled the room. He was far too pleased at the fact that they had house guests and that he had tea and snacks to share! Merci` Dio dropped Mystic's knotted hair and moved over to Die. He curled himself over the medusa's shoulders to get a good look at the plate he was carrying. He didn't know what some of the dishes were, and of course he wanted to touch them. The little shadow's arms reached toward the teapot to pick it up and obviously inspect the item.
Merci glanced over at the movement of her ward and her breath caught in her throat before she could yell at him. This was going to end badly, her body straightened up off the couch out of reflex but she wouldn't be able to stop the little troublemaker before it was to late. Vance and Seraph both just watched quietly, though the glee on Vance's face couldn't be hidden as he watched. It was like watching what was sure to be a train wreak. though Maili didn't lose her composure, or her ability to chastise the small shadow. "Dio..." He heard her, he just didn't wanna listen. So he didn't. Reyna Crelos Reyna said nothing to stop Dio but Mystic did do something about it. He loomed over the smaller shadow and reached with both hands to clasp a firm hold to the teapot. In a voice only audible to Dio, he said, 'While I generally approve of mischief-making, breaking a teapot belonging to my Reyna would not bode well, little one.'He smirked faintly and sat it back down onto the table without any further fuss, though he couldn't help at chuckle at the feeling of disappointment that emanated from the other shadow. It was also mixed with an unending sort of curiosity. It made him seem so... innocent. Merci` He... took it away!
Dio gave Mystic a very wide eyed look of horror as his toy was taken away from him. He watched as it went down on the table and he heaved a sort of sigh as he realized that his explorations would probably be stopped again if he should try. So instead he swiped Die's hat right off his head and quickly zoomed over behind Reyna to check it out instead.Merci covered her eyes and dropped back to sag on the couch. "I should probably get him home. Dio hasn't been like this in awhile." Maili couldn't help the chuckle as Dio put the hat on and tried to imitate Die. "He got it out of his system pretty quickly at home, it's just a new environment." Vance couldn't help a snort, "See, the little b*****d is hell on wheels. Merci you should leave him here. He obviously likes them and would be more at home." Merci shot a look back up at Vance, not even saying anything to him in response to that ridiculous idea. Reyna Crelos "Oh dear me I think there are enough ghosts in the house," Die hissed as he folded his arms over his chest and then pouted over at Mystic. "You're a ghost-thing! Get my hat back for meee? Pleeeaase?" he all but whined as he moved to coil himself about Mystic's form. The elder shadow rolled his eyes and chose to ignore Die even though he was all but curled into his arms. 'If you believe he is trouble now, I dare you to attempt to separate him from his guardian,' Mystic answered with a smirk to his tone of voice that belied the calm, neutral expression on his face. Reyna giggled. "That's nothing short of the truth." Merci` Dio held the hat on his head and moved closer to the group. He folded his arms and moved to curl around Maili, in something that could be called an imitation of Die. There was something akin to a smile on his face, his eyes and face scrunched up happily. Maili tsked and pulled the hat off Dio's sparkling head and gave him a soft bop on his noggin. "That isn't very nice, if you can't be nice we are going to have to leave you at home." Her voice was reasonable, even though the threat in her voice was obvious. The green hand moved and tossed the hat carefully toward Die. "He wasn't trying to be mean." Merci moved to perch on the edge of the couch, and she looked between Mystic and Reyna. "It gets better right?" She didn't want to say much more then that in front of Dio. She did love him very much, but she would have been a lot more comfortable taking him places if she didn't have to scold him every few minutes. Vance grumbled quietly, "Should have left the stone buried when you had the chance." His blindfolded face turned toward Seraph, who didn't respond at all. Reyna Crelos "Infinitely so," Reyna replied before flexing both of her hands out before her in a stretch that showed off rather lengthy nails, "I can't say there'd be much left of Mystic to speak of if he hadn't shaped up." She meant it teasingly, which was apparent in her voice, but they had had their moments. He was, after all, currently responsible for the form she was stuck in currently; halfway between her true form and her human guise. Die sniffed faintly as he caught at his hat and placed it daintily back upon his head. "Oh! I'm certain he meant no real harm," he replied as he seemed to fidget and squirm before pouting when Mystic phased through his arms and moved to sit back down upon the couch next to his bond. "No harm done! And.. I do have other hats. Many more in fact. A whole wardrobe! My mum sends me gifts and clothes from all over the place, " he rambled on with a happy sigh. Merci` Merci's breath sighed out and she smiled, "That is such a relief. I worry about him, he's constantly meddling with things that don't belong to him. I'm just worried he is going to touch the wrong thing one day and regret it." Vance coughed and muttered, "Like your one to talk, if you hadn't gone grabbing that rock we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place." The women it seemed were in full silent treatment mode as neither one reacted to Vance, but Dio's eyes moved up to him and then back. It was obvious to anyone paying attention that he wasn't entirely innocent of what Vance was saying about him. Suddenly the little creature phased through the couch and grabbed a hold of the long tendril of hair that was usually wrapped around Vance's body. That one piece of hair was just about longer then the medusa's entire form, and Dio cruised around him. That piece of hair wrapped tighter and tighter, and before Vance could do much he was trapped within his own long strands. Dio stuffed the end of the hair into Vance's mouth and scooped the top hat off his head. The little shadow looked entirely to pleased with himself when Vance started making indignant and angry noises. Dio hovered over and planted himself safely into Mystic's arms, putting the top hat in Die's lap. 'You can have that one too. Since you like hats.'Merci, Maili and Seraph were all staring at Vance. Maili started laughing loudly, before Merci and Seraph turned to look at Dio. The fox woman was horrified, but couldn't think of a single thing to say. Reyna Crelos Die looked somewhat horrified as though having Vance's hat made him some sort of accomplice to the little Fiend's scheming plot. "Ohhh dear," he stated, wide-eyed behind the blindfold he wore. Reyna merely smirked and tried her best to stifle her laughter behind one hand as she eyed Vance. If the loud-mouthed medusa wasn't careful, he would likely find himself in far worse conditions. Dio, while he did come across as far more sweet and innocent than the average Shadow, was still a Shadow and therefore prone to mischief and trickery as all his other brethren were. Die cleared his throat and daintily slithered over towards Vance to help untangle his long hair. He flushed slightly and then placed the hat back on Vance's head before offering him a small smile. "It wouldn't look good on me anyway. I don't think I've an outfit to match!" Mystic merely watched the scene play out before him and held onto the squirming, giddy child in his arms. He was neither worried nor concerned. Merci` Vance was near homicidal as he glared daggers at the little fiend, who was happily snuggled into Mystic's arms and fiddled with one of his hands. Merci gave Maili a look, and the green skinned woman rose from her seat. "Come on Vance, you and I are going to go out to the car now." His head turned toward her, and surprisingly before he could say anything nasty, Seraph hooked an arm through his. "It is best to do as the lady says." The odd asian medusa led the unsuspecting Vance toward the front door. "Thank you for your hospitality. I am sorry that we couldn't have tea with you." Maili's head inclined toward Die, "You have been a most gracious host under some very trying circumstances. Maybe the next time we meet it will be less stressful and we can actually have some of the food you have prepared. It really does smell delicious." She seemed calm and collected and nodded to Mystic and Reyna in turn before she slithered over to help Seraph get Vance out of the front door. Merci seemed to sag into her couch, and her eyes moved over to Reyna. "I don't suppose I can hide out in your basement or attic. Those three are going to make me go gray before my time." Her tone was light, but it wasn't entirely clear if she was joking or not. Reyna Crelos Reyna chuckled quietly as she stood and helped Merci to her feet. "The basement is Die's domain and the attic is off limits," she said in a serious tone before adding in a sweeter voice, "I do have a guest room however should you need to escape." Die flushed and clasped his hands in front of him at Maili's compliments. He did so love guests! "Perhaps all of you will have to come visit again!" he smiled as he slithered after the trio of medusa and waved from the front door. "Sorry your little ghost friend tried to tie you up with your pretty hair, Vance!" Mystic rolled his eyes at Die. Sure, he could explain that they were not ghosts, but it was a conversation they had had previously. On more than one occasion, at that. It never seemed to sink in. Merci` Merci broke out into a huge grin and accepted the help. "Thanks, don't be surprised if one day I show up in my bunny slippers and PJ's looking half crazy alright?" Her green eyes moved to Dio, who was still happily examining the star like patterns on Mystic's hands. He had a squinty look on his face that Merci was starting to learn actually meant he wasn't letting something go anytime soon. "Dio my love, come along. It's time we went home." The little creature didn't even look up, 'I'm not done looking.'Merci paced over and shifted bend down, balancing on the balls of her feet. "Dio, Mystic will not disappear tomorrow. I am sure you will see him again. And when you do you can ask him if you can look at his hands then alright?" The shadow looked up at his friend and he gave him wide eyes, 'Would you let me look next time?' The woman glanced at Mystic, and she hoped he said yes. She was pretty sure that if an affirmative wasn't given, she would never get Dio into the car. Reyna Crelos Mystic's eyes seemed to shine with amusement as he reached to clasp his hand over the child's. 'I am not inclined to say no. You're more than welcome to come and visit, little Star,' he answered in a warm, brotherly sort of tone before idly petting the child atop his head. Merci` Dio kept looking at him for a moment before he loosed his hands from around Mystic's, 'Okay, I believe you if you say so.' He moved and gave the older shadow a quick hug, wrapping his arms around his neck and squeezing lightly. The little creature then surrendered himself to Merci, who stood up and ushered him toward the door. "Honestly thank you both for allowing us to stay with you for a short time. It was a pleasure." and the honesty of her statement could be heard in her voice. "I don't get out much, and I really hope you don't mind if we do this again sometime without the pink haired nightmare." Before Dio let himself get pulled out of the house he swooped over and gave Reyna a quick hug too. Obviously her appearance didn't bother the little shadow one single bit, he lived with snake people after all. He let her go and didn't hug Die, instead he lightly touched the back of his hand as he swept through the open doorway. Reyna Crelos "Any time," Reyna replied before snickering quietly when the little Fiend skittered over to hug her as well. She typically was rather adverse to physical contact with, well, much of anything or anyone, but he was a sweet child. Luckily for Dio, being a mother had softened her up, and the gesture reminded her of her little Sam. Mystic nodded towards Merci before moving to stand closer to Reyna, fading out of view somewhat as he contented himself to hide within her shadow. He did, however, offer Dio a small wave as he was carted out the door by his guardian. Die skittered back at the light touch to his hand, somewhat taken about. But he smiled and waved goodbye regardless. Merci` Merci followed the little shadow out to the car and glanced back at the house. They had a nice family, she was slightly jealous. Even though they seemed to have their little differences, somehow they seemed to be able to handle the issues in a more refined manner. Vance had been tossed into the far back of the rather spacious SUV, and Maili and Seraph were both already in their places. Dio phased through the windshield and curled up in Maili's arms, content to let his beautiful burgundy eyes close in contentment. All in all, Merci thought as she climbed into the drivers seat, It hadn't been a bad day at all. Quietly she resolved to get out more often. The car started and backed out the way it had come in, carrying its small piece of chaos away with it.

The book laid open next to him on the wooden floor where the boy lay. He was in a casual position, one arm curled under his head to act as a pillow, and the other was stretched out in front of him with his index finger pointed straight into the sky. He stared up at the sparkling blanket overhead, and his arm traced the form of Cygnus, the swan, also known as the northern cross, in the stars that looked back down at him from the heavens. The book outlined all of the constellations, but this one had changed since it had been published. Where once a star had danced was only, what appeared to the naked eye, to be empty space. It had died.
He wasn't sure why that fascinated him so much. Maybe it was the fact that it had died alone, it had suffered it's fate over ten thousand years ago and no one on Earth had even known until only a scant few years ago. The science of it all escaped him, but the poignancy wasn't something lost on him no matter how young he was.
Dio's sigh broke the near silence, the book had told him so much about the technical side of those midnight jewels, but nothing about the longing he felt inside his soul when he saw them. His eyes could trace the contours of the constellations, but somehow he knew there should be more. The shadow sat up and pulled the book back into his lap. Astronomy, Astrology, somehow it didn't matter what way he looked at his problem, no one else seemed able to provide him an answer.
There were things that books couldn't teach him.
The night breeze ruffled the pages of the manuscript, creating a soft sound that complimented the distant sound of wind chimes on the old Victorian's porch. The loud snap of the book as the covers were forced together quickly put an end to the harmony and echoed across the rooftop. Dio shoved it off his lap and flopped back on his back, arms crossed over his burgundy eyes.
The book didn't offer him anything on what he really wanted to know. He felt so powerless, like he should know something and it eluded him always at the periphery. There were a few things that Dio knew, the stars were special to him. Yes, there was Merci and Maili, and he felt a sort of kinship with them, but somehow the stars were more then that. He knew they wondered why he always spent his time up on the top of the house. They wanted to know why Dio stared off into the stars, like a fool headed dreamer. Despite this, like good family, they left him to his own devices.
After all he suffered enough teasing with Vance around.
Thoughts of Vance only made Dio growl with frustration. He was getting distracted from his purpose, and he didn't want to waste precious night with thoughts of the evil snake man sleeping downstairs. Behind his eyes, the shadow could see the stars twinkling. Little dots, like one sees when they stare at the sun. The overwhelming sense of hopelessness and failure made him shift his arms enough upward that he could again stare into infinity.
He released the longing he felt inside, he didn't try to hide it or ignore it like he did when he was with others. Dio let his eyes fill with the helplessness and want he felt inside when he was out under the darkened sky. His arms moved out to his sides, extended away from his body, as if he was trying to embrace the universe and draw it inside of himself.
Dio's expressive eyes drifted closed, and he imagined himself surrounded by those amazing lights. They moved through him, around him, and he played with them inside his mind. Slowly his helplessness, loneliness, and despair fled, and he was left with a pure joy. His physical body remained still, as he let himself wander in his mind, weaving himself into the fabric of the universe.
He didn’t realize when he fell asleep. Dio didn’t know when Maili came up in the early morning and picked him and his book up. The shadow slept through being tucked into his own bed, in his own room, with posters and pictures of the last great frontier, outer space, plastering the walls. Dio dreamed, and for one of the first times in his short life, he felt truly happy.

 It was late and the room was dark, the only illumination was a pendulum lamp over the table and the silver light of the moon streaking through the windows. The four combatants were hunched down low sneaking looks at each other, waiting for an opening. Vance broke the silence “I’ll call you your dishes, and raise you dusting on Thursday.” Seraph had folded already earlier, and was sitting quietly and serenely over his “chips”. Instead of regular poker chips they played for slips of paper with chores on them, and the loser took all. The air had been so thick with tension that Maili had simply volunteered for her chores and gotten out early. So now it was down to Merci, Vance and Dio. The shadow glanced down at his hand, the hair falling over his face from under the visor and the lack of a mouth had thrown the other players. It was harder to see a tell on the little boys face. ’I’ll call.’ Merci made a disgusted sound and tossed her cards down on the table. She knew when she had been beaten. The two of them had been back and forth all night. Seraph and Merci had stayed pretty even by not gambling to much but Vance and Dio had gained and lost to each other over the last hour and a half. There were only two more hands left before the chores were locked in. It was down to the wire and Vance was really sweating it. Usually by this point he was way ahead, but Dio and his oddities were really getting to the card savvy medusa. Vance dropped his hand, three of a kind jack high. It was a good hand, but it wasn’t the best, it could be beaten. Dio just leaned over so he could get a better look at what Vance had dropped on the table, and he nodded slightly. ’Nice Hand, I dunno though, do I win?’ The shadow carefully laid the cards down one at a time, like he had been all night. He arranged them so they could be easily seen and glanced around a bit worried that he might have lost. Two fours and three happy kings all lay on the table in front of him. And that definitely beat a three of a kind. Merci felt a surge of excitement every time Dio won a hand. She had tried to sit him down and teach him the basics the day before so he wouldn’t be totally lost during this game. He was doing damned good for someone that had only learned to play poker the day before. An angry hiss escaped Vance and the tip of his tail lashed against the floor as he scooped up his portion of the losing pot, passing a couple slips to both Merci and Seraph. Dio’s stack was a lot smaller then anyone else’s, and it was really rubbing Vance that the shadow seemed to be beating him at his own game. “Hey kid. How about we make this last hand interesting… you and me, loser takes all.” Dio looked up from gathering the cards and regarded Vance a little warily. It sounded good, he was getting tired of playing cards anyway and he was losing nighttime hours with this game. He wanted to get up on the roof and watch the stars, not be stuck in the kitchen playing poker. Without much thought he nodded. A very happy little sound escaped Vance, “Good, that means the loser takes everyone’s chores. Not just mine or yours.” Merci stood up and leaned on the table. “Come on Vance that isn’t fair. You can’t make a wager like that because whoever loses is going to be like Cinder-freaking-rella! This house is huge and it takes more then one person to keep up on everything.” Vance shot her a look, “Pipe down with the whole mother routine, I have just as much to lose as he does. If I lose I’m stuck doing everything. So I don’t see how this is unfair at all.” Dio just quietly shuffled the cards during the small squabble, ’It’s okay Merci, I don’t mind. I just wanna get the game over’ He dealt the cards to Vance and himself, and picked them up, shuffling them around till they were fanned in his hand in the proper order. With a wicked grin Vance picked up his own cards and hunkered down to beat the little parasite. His hand was pretty good. A queen, a jack, a ten, a seven and a four. The blindfold hid his eyes as he regarded the little shadow calmly discard three cards and rearrange his hand. Vance still wasn’t sure if the kid had a tell, it was almost as bad as playing with Seraph. He discarded the low cards and took two for himself. Betting wasn’t really necessary; they had already said the stakes at the beginning of the game. “Well, I guess I could let you fold if you really wanted to.” Vance said in a cocky tone. He had hit the jackpot. A pretty king and nine was sitting looking up at him from his hand. He had gotten a straight. It was a good hand; the leech would have to have had unbelievable luck to get something better then this. Dio glanced up from his cards and shook his head slowly. ’No thank you, should I lay my hand down now?’ He turned his head to look to Merci, as if asking for permission. She just nodded slowly; obviously worried that Vance had gotten him. The boy laid down a mismatch of cards that didn’t make sense at first. A two, a four, five, seven and eight, it wasn’t until you looked at them a little closer that it was clear why he kept the ones he did. They were all spades. A Flush. Vance threw his cards down on the table and reared up, “He cheated!” Dio dove behind Merci and hid. Vance was angry and looked like he was ready to pull his blindfold off. Merci stood up and shielded Dio, glaring at the snake. “Stop it Vance, you were the one that set the rules. If you didn’t want to lose you shouldn’t have put the stakes so high.” Seraph quietly intervened, his slightly accented voice somehow carrying over the hissing that came from the pink haired medusa. “Vance, it is not worth an open confrontation. I shall help you with your burden and we will reconvene next month for a rematch.” He sounded so reasonable, that Vance relaxed back down. He swept his hand over the table, knocking cards everywhere before sweeping out of the room. Dio peeked around her looking worried. “It’s alright Dio you didn’t do anything wrong. Vance is just a sore loser, he isn’t used to it. He’s only done it a couple times. You go on up to the roof and relax. He made his bed and he can sleep in it.” Merci’s voice was quiet and calming. The little boy nodded slowly, and let Merci hug him and soothe him before he moved off toward the stairs. Dio felt more comfortable out from under the glaring light of the lamp in the kitchen, but that swiftly ended when he got to the top of the stairs and Vance stood between him and the roof. “Don’t think you’ve won. No one here likes you; we only tolerate you because without you Merci gets sick. If we could we would drive you out of here you soul sucking monster.” And with those hurtful words, Vance turned and slunk into his room. The slam of the door sent Dio fleeing to the safety of the windows walk, and the reassurance of the stars. The unhappiness that flowed through the bond called Merci up after him. She found the little shadow huddled against the fence that was supposed to help keep people from falling off the house. She didn’t ask, she knew Vance had to have said something hurtful, she scooped up her ward, and held him close. “I love you.” She whispered, and then said nothing. The two of them sat in silence. The stars above were their only companion, until Dio relaxed into her and fell asleep.

 Zero Dream Today was a nice, sunny day. It was warmer that it was a few days ago, and it seemed like spring was finally starting to drag itself in. Zero was walking on with no end destination in mind, often sending look to make sure she was not going too fast for the elven woman following her. She was going to find a way to lift Eirnae's spirit, damnit ! As much as the elf's current heartache was understandable, it threatened to swallow her whole. And, of course, the blue-haired one had taken upon herself to be the proverbial knight in shining armor and at least does her best to cheer her friend up. It had taken her long enough to convince her to get out, but now ? It was too early to stop and eat somewhere, so they wandered, eventually finding herself in a part of town she did not usually go in, and stopping in front of a sign. Twillight Designs... a jewelry store ? Oh, ho ho ho... Of course, a plan started to form itself. Eirnae loved jewelry, and what better to make someone happy than a surprise gift ! Oh, she was so smart sometimes. "Nae ! It looks pretty neat, let's take a look !" The cyborg beamed, hoping her own excitement would infect her friend sometime soon. Eirnae Slytherin-Natenhar Accompanying Zero was enough to encourage the elf to leave the domicile that she's come to temporarily reside within along with her eldest daughter, Shina. It's proven to be a damn sight better than to be in or by the Haven right now.
She just can't handle thinking about Lenore and her current wife too much, or what will happen once she works up the nerve to tell their ... her children of the situation in great detail. Preparing for their onslaught of questions is a mental exercise unto itself, but it's their potential emotional reactions that tug at her insides and weave them into intricate knots.
She's trying to be a pleasant companion for the friend who's been so kind to her these past few weeks. With Zero having taken on the roles of being Eirnae's comforter and regular partner in conversation, she feels it's the least she can do. Yet she'd not counted on being guided out of her sanctuary from the big wide world and led into the shopping district. Still, if browsing is what Zero wants to do ... and she can't help but smile a little at how Zero reacts to the shops they encounter. The cyborg is far more human emotionally than she gives herself credit for, and the elf finds her friend to be very endearing. Without her, what would she be doing? "Probably training my body into the ground," she mentally mutters, then looking up sharply when Zero points out the jewelry shop. Blinking once, she attempts to fight her instinctual urge to take a closer look. Then she shrugs and gives in. Why worry? This could be a great distraction, and besides, Zero's interested already, right? "Sure, mellon. Let's have a closer look."
Unconsciously taking on the role she did while with Lenore, she goes to the shop's door and opens it, keeping it that way so Zero can slip inside the building with ease. "Please, after you."
Yet she's not about to send her friend into an as yet unexplored place, at least not alone. With little prompting, Alimus the shadowkin peels himself from Eirnae's shadow and flits to one past the doorway, peering about from the murky safety of a counter's castoff darkness.
Merci` Merci swung around the corner and walked with a little spring to her step. It was so nice to get out of the house and away from the squabbling snakes. Her seemingly perpetual stress headache had almost melted away. That morning had been an absolute killer, Dio had created the worst screaming match that house had seen in years. The sugar bowl seemed to somehow get spiked with a fair amount of salt. Seraph had been absolutely furious, which was hard to tell unless you knew him really really well. Having all of that behind her was such a relief, and she didn't even notice the other two women as she slipped her way into the jewelry store. He knew he had hurt Merci, but that hadn't been his aim. Vance was always so mean to him, he just wanted to show him that he wasn't going to be treated badly all the time without doing something about it.
The look on his that meanie's face had been absolutely priceless. Little Dio had curled up and laughed to himself in the corner while Vance spewed his coffee all over Seraph's nice shiny clean counters.
And to make everything even better, because he had stood up for himself Merci had needed to get out! A trip around town was always lots of fun, new things to see. He swooped in the store behind Merci, going through one of the walls instead of though the door.
Ooooo.. People! Merci glanced back in time to see Dio do a complete about face and stare at the other visitors. Twilight Designs was usually pretty empty, Merci had gathered that the place catered to a more off beat crowd. The jewelry designs were beautiful, but a little more expensive then your average fair. Dio couldn't stand it, he floated a little closer to Eirnae and reached out to touch her hair. He had no idea that his attentions might be unwelcome or in the least bit inappropriate as he started trying to touch her everywhere he could, face, hair, ears, and neck as his burgundy eyes studied her much like one would look through a microscope.Reyna Crelos The shop for the most part was entirely empty, or at least appeared so. The silence that surrounded it was broken by a faint chime as the women entered. Athan strode into view as he nudged open the door to the back room and shuffled through with various packages to greet his customers. "Well good afternoon, Miss Merci," he replied in a smooth, gentlemanly tone as he sat behind the desk that Reyna typically occupied after opening up one of the parcels. He had recently purchased an assortment of gems and beads for jewelry making and had not yet had the time to sort through them. "And good afternoon to you both, ladies," he went on as he noticed the other two figures that were heading in towards the shop before adding: "Little Star, try not to harass my customers, hm?" Zero Dream Unlike Eirnae, Zero's guard is completely down, and she looks almost akin to a kid inside a toystore as she started peering. She wasn't one of jewelry - not the expensive kind at the very least, but those necklace sure where pretty ! They also looked sturdy enough... However, the blue haired woman's attention was derailed as she peered up to look at the man, a smile on her face. However, one eyebrow rose sharply as she caught the... what the heck was it ? Poking at her friend. She tried to stifle in her laughter, but she quite obviously failed. "My, my, Nae, I think you're got an admirer !" -=TBC=-
