Taking care of Ryan

I awoke that night to a loud screeching noise. Not really knowing what it was, I turned over in my bed and covered my head with my pillow. The screeching continued.
"MOM! The baby is crying!" Tabitha yelled from her room. I sat straight up in bed, remembering we now had Ryan in the house. I quickly got out of bed and hurried down the hall to the room that contained her crib.
Opening the door, there was Ryan in her bed, crying loudly. "Aw, Ryan, what's the matter?" I cooed, picking her up. The only response I got was more loud crying. I bounced her up and down in my arms, trying to think of what could be wrong. I was coming up with a blank.
Then it hit me. Food. I hadn't fed her. She had to be hungry. What in the world could I feed her though? We didn’t have any baby food whatsoever, and all the stores within a distance that I could drive or walk to in under twenty minutes were closed.
“Tabby!” I called, bringing Ryan downstairs to the kitchen and putting her in the seat Tabitha had brought up earlier. Tabby padded down the stairs covering her ears from Ryan loud shrieks.
“What?” she asked, as I looked through the cupboards, trying to figure out what I could feed Ryan.
“You took home economics in school. What can I feed Ryan from the food we have here?” I asked. Tabby sighed and walked over to the counter, grabbing a banana from the bowl of fruit, a bowl from the cupboard and a spoon from the drawer. She peeled the banana and put it in the bowl, mashing it to mush and the handing it to me.
“She’ll probably eat this.” she muttered.
“Genius!” I exclaimed. It was clear that I wasn’t fully awake, finding mashed banana a genius idea.
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.” Tabitha mumbled, heading for the stairs.
“No need to be so grumpy!” I said, walking over to Ryan’s chair. “When you were a baby, you were just fine with eating cat food!” Tabitha stuck her tongue out at me, her tail waving back and forth, before she stomped upstairs. I turned back to Ryan, who’s crying had subsided, and she was now staring intently at the mashed bananas.
“Here you go honey.” I said, feeding her some. She swallowed and I fed her some more. I fed her until basically all the banana was gone. Ryan let out a happy shriek, a smile on her face. I washed off her face and took her back upstairs, rocking her back and forth gently.
Ryan was struggling to keep her eyes open by the time I got to her crib. I put her down gently and stayed in the room till her eyes closed and her breathing became deep and even. I smiled at the sleeping child and returned to my own room, getting into bed.
“What more does this baby have in store for me?” I wondered aloud to myself.

Parent Journal Entry #1

Gosh, when was the last time I wrote in this journal? When Tabitha was little? Yup... that sounds about right.... Well I guess it's time to start writing in it again, seeing as there has been a new addition to what used to be a household of just two. A little baby girl, and by the note that was with her, her name is Ryan.

Oh, she's very adorable, she has black hair and very pretty eyes. She also has a very loud mouth on her. That baby can cry! She was screeching up a storm earlier, and even though she's now asleep, I cant get back to bed, which is why I'm writing in this old thing. I'm afraid she may wake-up again and start crying, and I want to be there to make sure she's okay if she does.

When I found her, I was out by the river, of all places. She was under one of the docks. All she had was a blanket, a note, and what I guess is a crown. The note said she wasn't safe. Wasn't safe from what? And who in the world thought she would be safe with me? Do I look like someone who is very good at protecting. Well, I guess so, since Ryan was sent to me. What I really want to know though is, who is she really, and where is she from? Who are her parents, and why was she sent away? they had to have been doing with Ryan's best interest's in mind, right? I could never imagine sending Tabby away, even if she isn't my biological daughter. But if it was to protect her... then I would, no doubt.

I just don't know. How long will I be taking care of Ryan? Will she be growing up here, or will someone come and take her tomorrow? Okay, I seriously doubt the last one, but still. I will admit though, even though she's only been around for a day, I do like that she is around. Hey, she even got moody Tabby out of her seemingly permanent state of grumpiness.

This will certainly be something interesting, I'm sure of that.

There is noise and than a large thump above you which is Ryan's room, the thump did sound like two feet that just hit the ground which did sound like Ryan's crib.
Oh no! What happens if Ryan fell out of her crib?! You better go and check on her! AND FAST!!!! eek

Okay, such a loud thump can be quite disturbing when you're half asleep over a bowl of cereal. I never was a morning person..... I jumped at the sound and looked up at the ceiling.... what in the world? I pushed my chair back and left the room, hurrying up the stairs. "Ryan?" I called, even though I knew the baby couldn't answer me. "Are you okay?" I asked as I went to open the door to her room.

When you open the door you see a little girl in feetie pajamas, holding onto Ryan's purple baby blanket.
"Hi mommy! Me able to crawl out of crib by myself!"
She says, rather proudly of her surprising accomplishment.
Not just that but she had the crown that she was holding when found on her head, but it wasn't quite put on correctly. She'll probably get the hang of putting on a crown the correct way when she gets older, but for now I guess that it's a hair accessory!

I looked at the young girl who had seemed to be Ryan. "Is that you Ryan?" I asked anyway, just to make sure. I was after all, still very much half asleep.

The little girl nodded though. "I Ryan!" she exclaimed happily getting up from the floor and beginning to run towards me. Halfway across the room though she tripped, falling flat on her behing, and thankfully not her head. I sighed softly and walk over, kneeling down next to her to make sure she was all right.

"Are you okay sweetie?" I asked her now. She looked at me, and suprisingly enough, she was smiling.

"I fine mama! I big now!" she burst out happily, which made me smile widely.

"Yes, you are big now." I agreed with a nod and a smile.

Parent Journal Entry #2

She's big! All of the sudden this little baby is big! Ryan is who I mean of course. I was just eating/slash sleeping when all of the sudden there's this huge thump and when I go upstairs, I see this little girl where Ryan should be. But it's her, that's for sure. She had her hair, her crown, and her blanket. Who else could it be? The tooth fairy? Yeah right.

It's only been a little while since she's grown, and right now she's upstairs playing with Tabby while I write this.

From what I can tell, Ryan takes after me without even being biologically related to me. She's very clumsy, so far I've seen her fall several times, but she seems fine with it. I'm sure she'll stop falling so much eventually. She also seems to be very happy, though after she calmed down she was quieter then she had been originally.

I don't know. I should probably put this down and go spend time with her and see what I learn about her then. I can't just say I know all of Ryan's personality by just spending half an hour with her.

It's a little disconcerting though, to have a toddler where there was once a baby. Is this how she's always going to grow? I suppose so... well at least now I know that about her. Now only a million more things to learn....
