Hm...I think that my problem when I first started out was stamina. I distinctly remember getting tired during Higher -- Next Morning Mix. Those were the days, filled with lots of water and fans.. xd

2un4r5h4d0w Star x Apple~ 2un4r5h4d0w Star x Apple~ Lord Thatlatu of the Tofu Sando Tagashibura The essence of stamina runs just killed me back in the heyday. Back when I when I was first heard of HVAM, I thought I was going to cough up my brains when I played it. Gotta remember, my heyday consisted of easy step charts because that's how it was back then. I remember the day I first cleared that with a D on standard. 2 days after clearing Max 300 with a C on Standard. I played the song, finished with a sliver of life, shouted with joy (it was more like a bark), then fell on the couch and oozed off that onto the ground, which I lay on, breathing heavily for about 8 minutes. It's hard to believe that was only 9 months ago. Anyway, my ADVICE to beginners is this: 1. learn your corner jumps, crossovers, spins, and streams NOW, that way you won't have to worry about learning them when you really need them. I neglected to learn crossovers and spins until November 2006, and it's really held me back on 10's and 11's. 2. Get homeversions an a hard pad. 3. Go for variety; playing the same song 10 times in one day will make people hate you. 4. Use the bar to play out of your regular comfort zone, but don't use it on songs you can clear without. You had some great advice. Oh and man, I know what you mean about the bar. My boyfriend gets so mad because he has the highest scores on the DDR machine in his town except for this one kid who ALWAYS uses the bar. Like, through the entire song. It's really unfair and stupid. The bar is not cheating, just so you know. I always thought the bar was there to help you do certian parts. Not to help you do an entire song~It doesn't make that big of a difference. Whoring it to death and avoiding it like the plague are only a matter of personal preference. It doesn't give any unfair advantages or disadvantages, especially in the case of "bar whore has all the high scores". Timing is the only thing that affects your score, and I'm pretty sure using a bar to support your weight doesn't help that. Every single person I've talked to has admitted that the game is much easier with the bar. And I agree~ idea

I used to step in the middle. Honestly, 98% of first-starting players do. I immediately quit when a Standard player came up to me and said "hey don't use the middle." Stamina was also a big issue for me at first, too. I'd break a sweat after Butterfly on light, seriously. I didn't excercise at all back then, and DDR is my only form of excercise now. I also used to hit my hand on the bar while doing cross-stepping like in CSFiLSM.
And there was sliding my feet and getting my shoes caught on the screws in the pad. I still sometimes do that to this day. I don't pick up my feet when I walk. gonk

I did that at first too, but I got over it faster than my stepping in the middle problem.
I finally moved up to standard mode. (For some songs) Since I've only been playing about a week I hope that's some sort of an accomplishment. sweatdrop

Saying the bar is cheating is like saying playing IIDX two-handed is cheating; it's just an alternate playing style, not a performance-booster. In fact, for awhile I found myself consuming more energy by using the bar. As said, the game boils down to accuracy. Having AAAed all but a handful of Extreme AC's songlist both with and without the bar, I can safely say that it makes no difference. pirate [/thread-derailing which I really hate doing whoops]

I guess its just a personal prefrence. I know if I played with the bar every time, I'd get upset if people looked down on me for it. But I wouldn't be surprised.
But what do I know. I've only been playing a week. dramallama

Aaaaaah, those were the days, a newbie to it all. XD Well I kind of started in arcades with FPShooter games, and DDR looked really fun, I tried I failed, I moved on. Then I got it for Christmas, this was when I was in 4th grade. Ever since then I really wanted to play hardcore, so I practiced like hell. Now I am not too shabby. ( Difficult and heavy level songs ) And I have been buying the home versions for a while now. ( 7 YEARS !!! ) I started with the 3rd Mix for PS1, imported. The biggest problem now is trying to play after a 9 hour work day in retail.

It helps my timing a TON on harder songs, because I can put the speed mods way up and see when the notes are better. Although it kills it on easy songs. I think I had that "go back to the middle" problem only for the first few songs I played.
Unlike most people, I started playing DDR at home rather than the arcade. When I got Ultramix 1... smile *nostalgia*
My main problem was balance. Since I've had no bar from square one, balance has been my main focus. I still never use the bar, but my balance is quite good.
Since Ultramix 1 only came with "Light mode" (no "Beginner"), I spent a lot of time in the Training Mode to slow songs down really slow to practice. Then I got on to doing actual Light songs, and so on. The Training Mode really helped me out when I was a newbie. XD

1)DDR pwns ITG. DDR is so much better in all aspects. 2)I started DDR when i was a freshman though i didn't play much until last year. I play on standard now most of the hard songs on 2x and im moving up to heavy. My problems were that i couldn't keep balance and i always slipped but now i figured out the turns, jumps, and keeping the rhtyhm with each song. It's easy once you get a hang of it.

DancingxMoogleX 1)DDR pwns ITG. DDR is so much better in all aspects. x2.5, x4 If not for those two speed mods, I'd still be trippin' up at 450 bpm. Also, Mellow. AKA one of the greatest songs every made. however StepMania > all
