"...It opened?"

There was disbelief in Mayu's voice, though she turned around and opened her eyes a crack just to be sure. The light hit her like a brick wall, but she gradually forced them open, getting up and stumbling over to the gray rectangle where the two figures were.

She stepped out into the hallway, rubbing her eyes. She still couldn't make out much, only spots of purple and other blotches of color as her weary eyes tried to adjust to the new conditions.

"Where do we go now?" she asked, a slight giddiness in her voice. At least they had made it out of the room okay.

He did it! Him, not one of the girls or some grown-up. Karan gave himself a mental pat on the back and proceeded through the door, keeping his shirt over his head as he felt his way out of the room. It was still too bright for his liking, and for a while as he plodded down the hallway, he wondered if the lighting was any different. But neither of the girls complained, so that couldn't be the case.

Where to go was pretty obvious, even without knowing what was there. "We go out," Karan stated. "However we can."

With that out of the way, he continued onward, his hand still brushing the wall. He wasn't willing to admit that he still couldn't see anything.

Pushing herself off the floor Naeva gingerly followed pursuit, watching the other young legends walk into the hallway without a second glance made jealousy bite at Naeva's already scattered mind.
The boy named Karan was showing feats of courage that Naeva longed to get back, and Mayu appeared to have no sense of fear about her, but she herself couldn't make her hands stop shaking as she reached the doorway. "Stop being foolish you silly harlot, get a grip, it’s just a hallway, a stupid empty hallway."

Naeva shook her head silently which had begun to heat up from panic. She couldn't believe how frightened she was, she had never been like this, never.
Peering around the corner Naeva surveyed the hallway, the door on the fall left looked far more promising than the one positioned on the right, its appearance reminding her of the barred window and the continuing need to escape this mad house.

"If it's 'out' that we want then it must be that door on the left. Can you see it? That other one is barred and...and I can't see any other doorways, I think that’s our only means of escape...do you see anything else?"

Mayu leaned against the wall for a moment as she waited for her vision to clear, starting after Karan only after the splotches blocking her vision had faded significantly.

"Slightly," she replied to Naeva, squinting as she strained to see the door. She could see a large rectangle which stood out slightly from the wall around it. That would be the door, she assumed.

"So what're the chances that that door will be unlocked like the one from before?" the child spoke up, trying to lighten the mood as she made her way down the hall slowly, eyes on the ground in front of her. She really didn't want to poke her foot on anything, that would be quite a misfortune to add to an already bad day.

There was another door? He hadn't completely led them astray? Well, that was comforting. And it was good to know that he could do something during an emergency. Maybe he wasn't completely useless after all.

"Pretty good, I think," Karan said, referring to their chances. "I think they figured those lights would keep us from going anywhere." And they almost had. Karan still couldn't see a blasted thing, and despite his recent success, he was still rather shaky. They weren't out of the woods yet. Or, rather, the freakish kidnapper's lair.

Keeping his hand on the wall, Karan inched closer to the girls. "Let's try it at least," he suggested, voice muffled through the shirt that was still over his head. "We've got nothing to lose."

Naeva's head nodded back in agreement "Your right, where only being foolish if we stay here a moment longer and I'll rather have it in my head that we at least tried to escape this place."

Following in Mayu's shadow Naeva made her way up to the door, giving a quick glance at the blocked door to her right. The door was barred by big planks of wood, beneath them the door had been painted black and the lock damaged.
The gateway seemed inaccessible, but even that didn’t stop shivers running down Naeva's back as she thought of what was behind it, something awful if the only exit had to be blocked.

"It couldn't hurt," Mayu shrugged, tailing Karan and all the while rubbing her eyes. The flourescent lighting squares, dim, reminded her slightly of a hospital. She shuddered slightly, keeping pace with her arms crossed over her chest.

She slowed as they approached the door, a bit apprehensive of what they might find behind it. It was probably another hallway, but still --- this whole place gave her shivers.

The child gripped the knob, giving the door a hard push.

Mayu's right. It is another hallway.
However, this one holds something a little new, a second option.
Like before, the other end holds a door, but in the centre of the hallway is a hole, a ladder sticking out of it. Seems 'down' is an option now, too!

In looks, this hallways is essentially the same as the last, save for a slight dimming of the lights.

Karan strained to listen, and finally dropped his shirt from in front of his face, secure in his belief that the lights were low enough to not be painful. He was right, and let his shoulders relax as well. At least something was going right.

Something sounded ahead of him, but he couldn't tell what it was. It sounded like a door, but it was impossible to be sure. Still, he had to at least find out, and try not to look like an idiot in the meantime. Thankfully, one of the girls had given pretty good directions to the door, so when the wall on his right ended abruptly, he quickly turned to the left and stumbled forwards, bumping the person in front of him.

"Sorry," he apologized quickly. "Did it open?"

Naeva felt something relax behind her eyes, like something was switching itself off in her brain. There was no longer strain behind her eyes, she could see without trying now and this brought some comfort to the legend, she felt like she could move forward or down as the path revelled.

"Oh great, now there is a ladder to try out! What other fun things have they got in store for us?" Naeva muttered angrily at the outcome of this new hallway, she wanted to leave this place now, her curiosity was wavering, and she was beginning to get very bored and frightened.

The emotion of impatience struck Naeva suddenly, as if the ability to see normally had made her lose all sense. Choosing a rash decision she boldly stomped past the others to reach the hole in the ground to peer down further into it.

Mayu rubbed her eyes as she stared down the hallway, leaning against the door. Her eyes had already started to adjust to the bright lights of the hallway they had just come down; the new, dimmer lights were like a hit to her vision.

She stood there blindly for a few moments, waiting for her sight to adjust to the dark. Tilting her head in the general direction of where Naeva was, she asked, "Is there anything interesting in the hallway? I can't see a thing, it's so dark in here."

Nobody had really answered his question, but based on that Naeva girl's sudden statement about a ladder, Karan felt that they had to be seeing somebody new. Fortunately for him, whoever he'd bumped into didn't seem to mind. Unfortunately, they were all getting further away. He tried to listen for where they were coming from, but it was difficult. A little to the right, perhaps. Hands flailing out for a wall, he found one and followed it.

"So, where does this ladder lead up to, you think?" Unable to see the real direction the ladder was going in, Karan could only imagine one going up. "It's got to be- OW!"

Quickly pulling his hand from the wall, Karan rubbed his forehead where he had hit it. That doorway must not have been as wide as he had given it credit for, because while there was still wall left on his right, there was also enough in front for him to walk into.

For ones so recently flooded with light, the darkness must be welcome. The lights in the ceiling flicker once, then extinguish completely, enveloping those contained in blackness.
The footsteps are unexpected, and fast. What the...?

Each member of the group wakes outside their home, with a lump on their head and a splitting headache. Well, no one ever said freedom was without a price!
