PensivePine Ariies cheerybear3 I always spelled it theater but people here have mentioned that it is incorrect or wierd to do it. So I am trying to change how I spell it but it's not easy to get used to. sweatdrop It's not incorrect, that's for sure. The commonly used american spelling is "theater."That's true. I didn't want to mention it before, but I do consider it more British to spell it 'theatre.' Yeah my mom told me it was just the brittish way to spell it. 3nodding

T-H-E-A-T-R-E is the proper english spelling of the word...and then it came to america, and we had to f*uck things up and change the last two letters around...if you notice, the english have that ending a lot (centre, theatre, etc.)

Just as centre, metre, etc are fine spellings. Spell check and teachers just don't like them, generally.

Now that you mention it, I realize that I use both on a regular basis. I'm not very conscious of it. I think I use the American way more, though.

The Oxford American Dictionary says theater is prefered, but both are correct. It also says that theatre is the original spelling in late Middle English.
