mistressofthelost http://www.anti-shurtugal.com/ That's all I've got to say. Seconded. Think Eragon is a well written piece of original fantasy? Think again -_- For a 19 year old man, Eragon is very poorly written. (He may have been 15 when he started, but by the time the first book was done, he was no longer a child.)

Cels mistressofthelost http://www.anti-shurtugal.com/ That's all I've got to say. Seconded. Think Eragon is a well written piece of original fantasy? And it seems like NO ONE understands why I don't like it.

Yeah I do agree with you there. I mean there is nothing wrong with it. I actually quite like it. But I am a little fuzzy on parts of the second one as it just kind of dragged on, and on, and on.

I haven't seen the movie yet. I was planning on renting it when it comes out on DVD. I think it may be out already, can't remember. Movie doesn't look like it is worth 20 bucks, so I will settle for the 4 dollar rental fee.

Actually, I really loathed the first one, but I didn't mind the second as bad.
I mean, the first one was just ridiculously stereotypical. Riding dragons... geez, let's not just jump on the Anne McCaffrey wagon, here. And the plot twists were almost-comically predictable. There was all that stupid, pointless angst, the obligatory 'OMG your father was WHO?'...
And then, the very worst part for me. Just as I was thinking, "Wow, this is a huge stereotypical Gary-Sue novel, how did this kid ever get published..." I find out that Christopher Paolini's parents are publishers. Gee, that answered my question pretty well, ne? As a person who had their writing dreams crushed by the realization of lack of talent, I was really steamed at the deal this kid pulled. And probably jealous, too, but hey, I'm human.
The second one, though... I guess I kind of got used to the concept a little more, so that helped. Plus, I just felt that it was a little more maturely written than the first. Some parts toyed around with making me think. So I grudgingly admitted that reading it hadn't been completely excruciating.
I still bear a grudge against Paolini, though. Little git.

I am a fan of the series but at the same time I feel that the author's writing needs some work. As many people said it borrows from a lot of other writers and needs work on originality. However the author was 15 when he wrote it and I am 15 and I know I cannot possibly write a book of such great length and actually do a decent job on it. I think its remarkable.

NOOO!! It's such an unoriginal and often over-descriptive book from what I hear; and apparently the conlangs are awful.

I get the feeling he keeps his dictionary handy to stab randomly at it and say, "There! I'm going to use that word!" It kind of drives me nuts.

I have to agree with you there. I mean, I am older than 15 now and even I don't know a lot of those words, much less how to incorporate them in a novel. Clearly someone likes his SAT words.
