Yes'rday Mommy taked me and S'ren'ty and Skye to the Second world and we haved a a'venture! I be'd a good guy and S'ren'ty was a bad guy and she stealed Skye away and I wented to save Skye from her, but 'cept I couldn't find them anywhere cos they're so small and the grass is almost tall like me. I maked my own armour and ev'rything, and I climbed a tree and seed them but then they disterpeared on me 'gain and so I couldn't find them. But then Mommy came and she finded them for me so it was good. And S'ren'ty finded a birdie that Mommy saided we could take home! And Mommy carried Skye home cos she was sleeping and so I carried S'ren'ty home cos I'm a big strong boy! I can't wait til our next a'venture!

The other day we were all at the cafe and Lore comed again and he was all wet cos it was raining outside, and Mommy was sleeping so I told him to sit by the fire so he didn't get sick cos that's what Mommy woulda telled him to do. And he said I'm a big boy and that I'm growing up and getting wise and r'spons'ble! That's a good thing, right? But then Mommy waked up and then Lore started acting all funny, just like Sasku used to act. And Mommy was acting funny too but she never acted funny like that before but I think maybe Lore might be her special friend even though she never telled me nothing. I'm gonna hafta ask her 'bout that, cos it makes me kinda worried 'bout her cos if Lore's her special friend then Mommy will be happy but if he goes away then Mommy will be sad again and that's not good. Maybe I better talk to Lore 'bout it cos I don't want Mommy to be sad.

Yay! Guess what guess what well you can't guess cos you're just a book but I got a father! I got a father finally! It's Lore, Lore's my father and really it's not fair cos when I first asked him he said no he wasn't my father but now he says maybe he can be and Mommy says she would like it if he is so maybe he will be! They had a big long hug on the couch last night, and he says he loves Mommy and Mommy loves him too and that's good but 'cept I think she used to say that 'bout Sasku too but he wasn't my father ... I should maybe ask what's the difference cos now I'm all confused cos Sasku's gone now ... But I got a book 'bout castles and Mommy says there's one in there that looks a lot like the one where she used to live! And maybe I can go see it soon, cos I'm getting betterer at talking elvish and I can even read it and write it even better than I can in English and Mommy says that maybe Lore will be here more and maybe he can teach me more, and I think that would be really neat cos I like Lore lots but I think maybe I better talk to him ... yeah, I gotta talk to him.

I like Lore lots. He's the bestest father ever! He kinda sorta lives at the cafe now just like us and Mommy! 'Cept he sleeps down on the couch most of the the time still, til he goes get his bed. Cos he needs a special bed, cos he's so big. Anyways I been going on lots of adventures and I even started going to school! But a lot of the classes are boring, I know lots of the stuff already. I wanna go to school where Mommy growed up, she says I can, and she says she'll take me and Lore will come too when we go! And my Nako is here and she's gonna go with us too! I like my Nako, she's nice like Mommy. She comed with Gramma and Donovan last week, and Skye was with them too! It's not fair, Skye getted to go there first, even though Mommy said I could go. But I guess I'll be able to go when we take Nako back home! Mommy says she can't stay long, just a week or so more because she gots to get back and meet my cousin! And Nako says I can talk elvish real good, and I like talking to her in that language because it's like keeping secrets cos only me and her and Mommy can speak it. It's lots of fun! But Mommy's been teaching Lore too I think so maybe he knows a bit of it. I don't know. Maybe. And guess what guess what! I gots a new brother and a sister! Well Mommy brought home their vases but they're not out of them yet - just like Serenity and Skye when Mommy first brought them home! I can't wait til they come out! Mommy says they're gonna be angels just like Skye because they gots the same kinder vases as her! And then I'm gonna have three sisters and a brother! I can't wait!

Oooo guess what happened yesterday! Skye and Serenity growed! They're big now too! Serenity's bigger'n me now! Not a whole lot but just a little bit she is. Skye growed too but she didn't grow so big, she just comes up to my shoulder now, but she's real skinny, even skinnier than I was when I growed big. But they're not squirts no more! It's gonna be fun when we go visit where Mommy growed up now cos they're bigger and Mommy will let them do more! I can't wait!

45 Lairë, 14 July
Well, I can see that Celebor doesn't upkeep his journal very often - but then, with everything that's been happening lately, I suppose he has been very busy. I only feel the duty to write in here now because last night, something happened, and he has been left in capable of writing in here himself. The poor boy, he's in so much pain ...
Apparently last night while we were at the cafe, he was playing a game with Lin, Kara's newest. He was chasing her around. She ducked underneath a table or something, and he grabbed the table as he ran around it, to help him turn - but the table, the table next to him, and a few chairs all crashed down on him, and the vases that were on the tables (flower vases, thankfully) went flying and smashed all over the place.
He cracked the back of his head open, and once Donovan was sure that was it, I healed him up - but now he's so sore, and so bruised, that he can hardly move. I know he'll be all right, but I can't help but worry about him. Perhaps it's motherly instinct. Or perhaps by now it's more than instinct.
According to Donovan, at any rate, he should be back to normal in a few days - but until then, rest and coddling.
Aye, no worries on that score.

And Lore's coming with us and the twins and Idhril too and everybody and I just can't wait! Nako's coming with us too, she says she gots to go home. I don't want her to stay there but she says she'll come visit us again sometime so that's okay cos she gots to be home sometimes too! Mommy says we're gonna have lots of fun there meeting the people she knows, she says they're really nice. She says we might meet our uncle Gion too maybe if he's there! I can't wait! I wanna meet him! I never knowed I had more uncles in the place where Mommy growed up!

Why do I always have to wait for things? Mommy said a long time ago that we were gonna go see where she growed up, but now she says I gotta stop asking cos we’re gonna go soon but not for a while. That doesn’t even make sense! Cos a while means later and soon means soon, don’t it? So why do we gotta wait? When are we gonna go? We already went to the Bor’lands, where she knowed some people and where Nako sometimes goes, and that was fun – Idhril comed out of her vase when we were there, we were all really surprised! And ‘Lani teached me fun stuff, and Storm and Starr gotted in lots of trouble for doing magic when they weren’t s’posed to, but it was still fun. But it still wasn’t where Mommy growed up. It isn’t fair. Serenity got to go, she didn’t even ask! And she eated with them and she meeted them all and our Ninako too and she got to talk to them and have fun with them and see Mommy’s brothers … but I don’t get to. Mommy says, I gotta wait until she comes with. But she’s taking forever! She always says not yet, not yet.
Hmph.
She says I gotta keep doing my school. I am! She says I should make some friends, and I did that too, I meeted a boy but ‘cept I forget his name all the time cos it’s a long one but he’s a funny boy. I don’t think Mommy likes him though cos she gets grumpy at me whenever I be like him or say something he says. But I’m learning lots! And I’m getting real good at writing like Mommy does, she says I write almost as good as her now! And I can read it too, that’s good she says! But it’s not fair cos I gotta work so hard to learn how to talk like her in her language but Storm and Starr and Idhril all can by themselves and they don’t gotta learn, they could all do it when they were born. But I do wanna learn! I don’t think Skye’s gonna learn though, cos she can’t even hardly talk normal either.
Anyways I gotta go practice my k’tas cos Uncle Triton says I’m getting better but not good enough yet so I gotta keep practicing more.

Autumn Nightmares – Part I
Autumn. A season of beauty. Reds and golds fill the air and litter the ground, and a brisk wind brings promise of snows within a matter of time. At the same time it clears the air, leaving is fresh, biting, invigorating. It’s cool enough outside to need a little something more when one goes out, but warm enough that it’s still possible to keep the window open at night.
The early morning sun was bright and warm when I woke that particular morning. I could see from the frost on the edges of the window that it was cold outside, but of course having two blankets and an extra little furnace next to me, I was as warm as ever. Warmer than usual, in fact. I was about to get up when I remembered … I had a second little furnace in bed with me. Celebor.
How could I have forgotten about him? He was still holding my arm with both hands … maybe that was how. I’d lost most of the feeling in that arm. It took me a while to pry him off, mostly because I was trying my best not to wake him. Poor boy … he hadn’t had much sleep. I woke a bit after midnight and heard him sitting just outside my door … crying. He’d had a nightmare, but he hadn’t wanted to wake me … I have to make sure the kids know they can wake me any time.
He wouldn’t say what the nightmare had been about … he didn’t want to talk at all. He just crawled into bed with Idhril and me and refused to let go of my arm. He stayed asleep while I dressed, but I can’t say how peaceful his sleep ended up being. It didn’t look peaceful. Even in the daylight …
It wasn’t until after Idhril was also awake that he finally stirred. I watched him anxiously to see how he was, searching for signs of fear or panic like he had displayed the night before. His eyes were glossy when he opened them, but he blinked it away and soon they were glowing as green as ever. He was facing the wall when he woke up, and he thrashed the blankets around until he turned and saw me standing on the other side of the room. Only then did he calm down – but still he said nothing. He sat up and hugged the blankets tightly to himself for a few moments, rocking back and forth. I was positive that he was still terrified of something, but his face was expressionless and he wasn’t making a sound. I sat next to him and put my arm around his shoulders, trying to comfort him. I wanted to pick him up and hold him close, but I was afraid that he would hear my heart pounding and that it would only serve to upset him even further.
“Celebor,” I said softly, trying to remain as calm as possible for both his sake and mine, “is there something you’d like to tell me?”
He shook his head violently, but her grabbed me around the middle and hugged me as he never had before. Something was obviously on his mind … I only wished I knew what it was.
I sighed inwardly, but I didn’t want to press him. The last thing I needed was to push him away from me and make him face his fear – whatever it was – alone.
“Well,” I murmured, smiling and trying to make him feel a bit better, “it’s time for you to get ready for school. Would you like to help me make breakfast?”
He shook his head again and tightened his grip on me. He had never not wanted to help me with breakfast before … something had to be really wrong.
“I don’t want to go to school today,” he squeaked finally.
I was surprised. “But you love school!” I protested before I could stop myself.
He didn’t reply.
I tried everything I could think of. Games, reading, letting him do things that I normally wouldn’t … but nothing helped. I couldn’t bring him out his shell, and he wouldn’t say another word. He just shook his head at everything I suggested.
By the time it came to really get ready for school, I decided to forego it. I was worried about him … something had to be really wrong. A single day of missing classes wouldn’t be too bad for him or Serenity, they would be able to catch up. But if I couldn’t find out what was wrong with him, that was something that could lead to bigger problems.

Celebor Explores the Castle Celebor had always been of the adventurous sort. On his first day of life outside his vase, he had gone swimming with his aunt and uncle and nearly drowned himself. His first time playing tag, he had cracked his head open. None of this deterred him from wanting to have fun, however, and on this, his first day in the Four Lands, visiting the place where his mother had grown up, he was off on his own, exploring the enormous white castle. As with any other time, he wasn’t worried about anything – about not knowing the language as well as he believed he did, about running into any sort of danger, about getting lost, or about losing track of the time and finding anyone else back again. His only focus was on seeing as much of the castle as he could before they had to go back home again. It wasn’t long before he had explored the entire first floor of the castle (at least, the rooms that weren’t locked and that he hadn’t already seen since their arrival not so long before), and he was intrigued by a set of stairs that he found in the third hall he was exploring. It was rather a dark set of stairs, but the dark had never bothered Celebor. Perhaps it had something to do with being born out of a vase, but he embraced the darkness as a natural part of him. His curiosity also had a part to play: he wanted to know what was down there, and who might be down there, as well as why, if every other set of stairs he had passed had had cool air rising from them, this one had hot air rising. He grinned and started down the stairs. Deep beneath the castle, where the stairs finally ended, was a door, a thick stone door, that was partially open. If it had been closed, there would have been no way for Celebor to open it; but as it was, after much effort he finally managed to push it open far enough for him to slip inside. It was deathly hot inside the room. The air was so thick he could see the waves of heat rising from the floor and gathering at the ceiling, moving and escaping at the now-open door. He wondered briefly if that was what Storm and Starr saw all the time, for the waves were so visible that it almost looked as if Celebor could reach out and take them in his hands, if he wanted. He tried, but was completely unsuccessful. He was sweating profusely already, and he unclasped his cloak and draped it over his arm, careful not to lose it, and headed further inside. “Hello?” he hollered in English, looking around and striving to be heard above the sound of … whatever the noise was. There was a loud roaring sound, and then the sound of metal on metal that echoed throughout the chamber. The lighting was rather red in there, and Celebor squinted against it and made his way further inside. Suddenly he remembered that there were some people here who didn’t speak English – and besides that, here was his chance to show other people that he could speak Elvish! With that in mind, he shouted “HELLO!” once more, this time in his mother’s tongue. The atmosphere in the room was very stifling, heavy and overbearing, but he somehow sensed a movement behind him. He turned slowly to see what it was, too unused to the intense heat to move any more quickly, and looked up at the figure that was there in front of him. The metallic echoes had stopped now, but the roar was still going as loud as ever. The elf was tall and foreboding looking, dark in every sense of the word, but in his shadowed eyes Celebor thought he saw a gleam of curiosity. On top of that, the man had some very familiar features – facial features mostly – and so he wasn’t afraid. He waved, realizing that it was still far too loud in there for him to say anything and be understood, and grinned. The elf smiled back, but it was a forced smile, one that wavered and changed to a confused frown. He waved as well, but it also was only half-hearted and didn’t really express anything more than an acknowledgement of the young elf-boy’s presence. Then he held up a finger as if asking Celebor to wait a moment, and turned and went back to wherever he had appeared from. A minute later, the noise died, and Celebor’s ears rang in the sudden silence. The tall elf reappeared, removing the thick black apron and gloves he had been wearing, still staring curiously at Celebor. “Hello, there,” he said cautiously, and Celebor was delighted to find that he could understand the man perfectly. “Who are you? How did you get down here?” Celebor grinned and stuck his hands behind his back innocently. “I’m Celebor!” he announced proudly. “Me and my family came here to visit, and Nana said I could explore everything here, so long as I asked directions if I got lost anywhere.” He tilted his head at the elf and asked, “Who are you?” “Ruel,” the man replied, frowning slightly. He knelt so that he was closer to Celebor’s height and stared at him wonderingly. “Hi, Ruel,” Celebor grinned and, remembering his manners, added, “It’s nice to meet you,” and bowed at the waist. Ruel smiled finally, even chuckled softly, and replied, “It’s nice to meet you, too, Celebor.” “Hey, what is this place?” Celebor asked eagerly, straightening and looking around again, his eyes bright with curiosity. “It’s really hot in here, hotter than upstairs. And it was real noisy, too, what was that?” Ruel rose and chuckled again. “This is the forge,” he replied kindly. “This is where I make the weapons and armour for the armoury. The fire has to be really hot so that it can melt metal and I can work with it – even hotter if I want to work with littinum.” “Littinum? What’s that?” Celebor questioned, turning to face the man once more. “The strongest and lightest metal known to elves,” Ruel smiled. “Would you like to see how it all works?” Celebor nodded eagerly, and Ruel laughed. “All right then, come with me,” he invited the boy. For the next few hours, Celebor thoroughly enjoyed himself, learning all the ins and outs of working with metal and crafting swords and the like. He had never been so fascinated with anything in his life, and he wondered if his Mommy might someday let him do the same thing.

Celebor Tries to Talk to his Uncle Ruel
Despite Lore’s warning, Celebor wanted to talk to his uncle again and find out exactly why he was so mean to Elnara. And so it was that, after Lore and Elnara had departed for their trip to the city for the day, Celebor, rather than following his cousin around (as he had been considering) decided to go back to the forge where his uncle could be found so that he could talk to him.
He was ready for the heat of the armoury this time: he had left his cloak upstairs in his bedroom. When the heat washed over him as he entered, he closed his eyes against it, then, when he was used to it again, opened his eyes and stepped inside.
“UNCLE RUEL!” he hollered, cupping his hands around his mouth. “I WANT TO TALK TO YOU!”
The ringing of the hammer stopped, though the roaring of the furnace continued, and a moment later Ruel appeared from around a corner, his face bright red – with anger or heat, Celebor couldn’t tell and didn’t care.
“What do you want?” Ruel asked Celebor, folding his arms across his chest. He was in a foul mood, and he didn’t bother to hide it.
Celebor faced his uncle straight on, folding his own arms across his chest to mimic him. “I want to talk to you,” he repeated, setting his jaw stubbornly. “You’re not very nice to my Nana.”
Ruel raised one eyebrow. “So? You weren’t exactly nice to me, either.” And he rubbed his jaw, were there was a bright purple bruise.
“You deserved it,” Celebor frowned, “for being so mean to her. Why do you have to be like that? You were really nice yesterday when you showed me all this stuff! Why were you mean at dinner?”
“Because your mother deserves nothing different,” Ruel scowled. “She’s a freak – a demon! She doesn’t belong here.” He turned to walk away again, but Celebor grabbed his arm and wouldn’t let him.
“Why do you say that?” he asked, looking angrily up at his uncle. “Just because she’s different from you, that doesn’t mean she’s a freak! That’s a really mean word!”
“Well she is one,” Ruel sneered. “Elves are elves, demons are demons. Demons can change their shape and appearance, elves can’t. It’s that simple.”
Celebor blinked. “But she is an elf!” he protested. “She’s not a demon! Just because she can do something that you can’t do doesn’t mean she’s a demon!”
“It’s not what she can do,” Ruel retorted, “but what she is.”
“And what she is,” Celebor frowned stubbornly, “is an elf, just like you! She even was a natural baby like you! I wasn’t a natural baby, she adopted me – does that mean you’re not going to like me just because I’m different from you? Just because I didn’t come from Nana like you came from Nako?”
Ruel stared at the boy.
“Besides,” Celebor went on, “Nana’s not any different from Nako! Nako can do just the same thing as Nana! And that’s even why Nana can do it in the first place! Because she was a natural baby from Nako!”
Ruel stared at Celebor a moment longer, then chuckled a bit and put one hand on his head. “You’re very defensive of your mother,” he nodded. “That, I can respect. And I give your mother credit for adopting so many children, especially those who are so different from herself and from our kind. However …” His tone took on a cold edge once more. “… she is a freak. A demon. And nothing you say can dissuade me.” And he turned and strode away.
Celebor was furious now. “You’re awful!” he shouted after his uncle, his fists clenched at his sides. “She told me about how she saved Daeron from the bad men! She told me how she brought him back to you!”
“And she was also the one who estranged him from me,” Ruel snapped, whirling to face Celebor again. “Thank you for the reminder! Now get out of here before I throw you out! And don’t come back again!” And he turned and headed deeper into the forge.
Celebor would have followed, but the temperature of the room suddenly rose again, and he found it difficult to breathe. He choked a bit on the air and gasped out the words of his magic spell, more out of desperation, out of instinct, than anything else – since of course he wasn’t underwater. But it worked! He was able to breathe freely again.
Before his spell wore off, he headed for the room’s exit, back to where the air was cooler, and where he could breathe on his own.
As he headed off to find some of the others, he decided that he didn’t like his Uncle Ruel very much.

Mother’s Log 13 January
Things aren’t exactly normal around here. I know they never were, but now even less so … Serenity, four months younger than Celebor, grew to teenhood before he did, and he was … well, he was happy for her, but crushed. I know I’ve always told him that once he grows, he can go visit my homeland again, but … I’m starting to realize exactly how uncertain the time is when it will happen. I have no idea, especially if Serenity is growing before him. I’ve made up my mind now … he can go today, as an early birthday present, because that way he can be home for his birthday proper. Of course, it’s only a visit, and he’s going with Lin and Donovan, so it’s not as if he’s going alone, and he’ll be back soon.
…
Since writing the above, he has been and come back – and what a shock I received! He grew while he was there! He’s taller than I am now, and quite a handsome devil, and though he still (for the moment) has a child’s mentality … he’s quite grown up. Not only his features (impressive though they are) but also … well, his voice is … quite deep now … quite deep indeed … but smooth, it’s a nice voice to listen to. Odd hearing childish remarks and questions coming from such a voice as his, but there you have it. And … his laugh … is quite grown up as well. He still laughs as much as he ever did, though, and I find that despite the fact that he’s so different, he’s still my little boy.
I can’t imagine how tall he’s going to be when he grows again … he’s taller than me, taller than Feng or Ryu, or Yue or Yukito (and that’s saying something!) and he still has one growth left. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up taller than Lore.
On the other hand he has also requested more studies, and at more advanced levels, in anything that I can offer him. He’s quite advanced in his schooling, his elvish (High Elven at least) is perfect … I should teach him Common Elvish. He was in the Borderlands, at the Ranch there, and it’s made up primarily of Westland Elves, and Common Elvish would be the language that they would know (except of course that everyone there speaks the Common Tongue, English, as well).
I should visit. Celebor tells me that Aliya has a son, Ulani and Ulrich have another son, and Elrohir and Haradhel have a son and a daughter of their own. So many changes in such a short time … what else will have changed by the time I finally make it back there?
Still, I would be comfortable letting Celebor go alone now, or at least to the Southland where he ends up directly in the castle and there’s no chance of being attacked. I would still like him to have a guide if he goes to the Borderlands, at least until he’s been trained more.
Or … I could let him take care of the children here (or Serenity could, I know she likes to take care of everyone) and go for a visit on my own. It would be nice to take Lore along, just the two of us, but he does have his work to do. Maybe I’ll talk to him about it.
Ah … there’s an idea, I should take Celebor to meet Gion and his family. He and Seeker are quite alike, I’m sure they would get along. Not to mention, there’s Galdor, who is probably an adult by now but still, they are Celebor’s cousins and it’s good for him to know his extended family. I’ll take the others once they’re bigger, too, but I don’t want to risk taking Storm yet, especially – since of course he was the one who got sunstroke the first time we went to the Southland, and he hadn’t even been outside much then.
Well, we’ll see what happens. I just can’t believe it … my little Celebor’s growing up …

14 January
First Birthday
This is so neat! It’s my birthday! I’m a whole year old now! Yesterday Mommy let me go visit the Borderlands and see Ulani and Ulrich and Aliya and Adonai and Uncle Elrohir and Aunt Haradhel and everybody else – there are a whole lot of people there! – with Lin and Donovan … there’s an elf there, Elros, he’s really tall! I grew while I was there, and Mommy says I’m going to end up taller than Lore maybe (cos I’m taller than her now!) so maybe I’ll end up tall like Elros is, I think he said he’s almost eight feet tall, or something like that, but even Mommy says that’s really tall.
But that was yesterday and I see Mommy already wrote about that in my journal so I’ll just leave it at that and write about today, ‘cos today’s my birthday! I’m a whole year old!
Well I was excited so I got up early but Mommy just sent me to school like always but that’s okay cos I learned a lot, so that’s good. But when we all got home Mommy took all of us to the café and even Kaito behaved (he said my name today!) and we had a yummy cake with strawberries and caramel stuff all over it … it was really yummy.
Then I got a present from Mommy! My very own BOW! It’s really neat, it has suns and stars all over it, and it’s silver, and it came with a quiver and a whole bunch of arrows and all of it all matches, it’s so neat! Mommy says she could teach me – or she says I can go live in Tor Karad with Ninako for a while and learn everything there if I want to! AND I can go whenever I think I’m ready!
Well I’ll wait a little while, I don’t want to leave Mommy yet. But soon! And I’ll learn to shoot and fight and use a sword and ride a horse and use magic and everything! I’m so excited, I can’t wait til I can go! Mommy says she’ll give me more lessons first though so that I know more before I go.
It’s gonna be so neat!

A Year in Training – Winter
For months, Celebor had been looking forward to the time he was going to spend in Tor Karad, training under his cousin and his cousin’s uncle. He had been only a Surprise when his mother had promised him he could come, and as a Child they had finally made it. The boy’s experience with his mother’s family had been varied indeed. He had gotten along splendidly with most of them, hero-worshipped his cousin Daeron, but had actually come to blows with his uncle Ruel.
Now he and Serenity were there for an entire year on their own, and while Celebor didn’t really care one way or the other how his uncle acted towards him, he knew that if his uncle was rude to Serenity, she would be devastated and want to return home.
Their first several hours there were spent with their great grandmother, but before dinner came they were shown to their rooms so that they could drop off their bags, change their clothes and wash before the meal.
Celebor was ready first, but, ever the mindful elder brother, he waited in the hallway for Serenity to be ready as well so that he could escort her down.
They arrived at the door to the Dining Hall just as Ruel and Lúthien were also arriving, and while Lúthien greeted both of them with a warm smile, Ruel only glared. Serenity looked away uncomfortably, but Celebor’s temper flared, and he put one hand on his uncle’s shoulder, stopping him from continuing into the Hall. His uncle looked at him in surprise.
“A word before dinner,” Celebor said firmly, tightening his fingers slightly on Ruel’s shoulder. Lúthien looked at the both of them, and a worried expression flickered across her face, but she followed Serenity into the Dining Hall without a word.
Ruel followed Celebor a few steps down the hall, and when they stopped he took a moment to examine his nephew.
“You’ve grown up quite a bit,” he commented, raising one eyebrow.
“At least one of us has,” Celebor retorted with a frown. He jabbed one finger against Ruel’s chest, his expression severe. “Look,” he said flatly, “I know that since Nako was forced to leave and Neko died and you came to live here, you’ve been able to do just about whatever you want and act however you want. I don’t know how old you are and to be honest, I really don’t care. You’re married and have adult kids, so obviously you’re pretty old, but you still act like a spoiled kid, needing to have everything your way. I’ve read about people like you, people who don’t care about anyone but themselves, who think that they’re always right and that anyone who thinks differently or looks different or acts different or likes different things is a freak. I’m not going to mess with your life and tell you what to do or how to act when you’re by yourself, but understand this.”
He leaned close, his green eyes blazing with fury. “If you do anything to make Serenity feel uncomfortable, or say anything rude about our mother, either when we’re here or when we’re not, I will not let you get away with it, do you understand me?”
Ruel swallowed hardly, a bead of sweat dripping down the side of his face. He had never felt so intimidated, not once, even when he had been caught spying on Lúthien by her brother, Eldrin. He nodded, more to get out of the situation than anything else, and Celebor released his shoulder and pushed him away.
“Good,” he nodded. “Don’t forget it.”
And with that, he headed into the Dining Hall, smiling as if nothing at all had happened.

Fighter’s Log: 3 April 2008
So much to write about, so little time … I’m just going to get through this.
First things first. After my year and a bit in the Southland, I came back, naïve and full of innocent ideas about what my life was going to be like, what I was going to do. I wanted to do good. I wanted to help. So I went with Donovan to the Borderlands to join in on his slaver hunts. It was … a lot different from what I had imagined. In my head, I knew I would have to kill … but … reality was far from the dream. To kill to defend yourself or others, that is acceptable; but that is not what I did. Far from it. I set out with the intention to kill, and that was what happened. I didn’t even look the man in the eye … I shot him in the back of the neck from a hiding place several yards away.
He was human … After death, Mom says that Elves are judged for their actions during their lives, but once they’ve paid for them they’re reborn as a new person, and they have the opportunity to live again … but the humans … when they die … they’re dead. That’s it. At least, as far as she knows, that’s it. She suggests that I ask Aragost for more information. I should. I mean, I ended a life … permanently, as far as I know. I can justify it – if I hadn’t done it, he would have tortured those two children, possibly to death – but that doesn’t make it any easier.
On a brighter note, Great-grandpa Long is teaching me fire magic. He says I have a knack for it, which … makes me feel pretty good.
And I’ve met a new friend. Niyana. It’s … different, interacting with her … she wants to treat me like a prince … despite the fact that here, I’m not, and even at home, I’m not, and in Arda, I really shouldn’t be. Well. We’ll see what I can do about that.
That’s all I can do for now, I have to go off for more training – I have to get used to odd hours of being awake and staying awake longer, and riding for long periods of time … maybe I should ask Mom if I can stay in the Borderlands for a bit, like I stayed in the Southland.
