Klaus and Sunny - I'm not sure when, or what their last names were, but... This rich couple, the wife's name was Sunny, she murdered her husband whose name was Klaus
Violet - possibly similar to 'violent'?
Beatrice - some Dante poem, I forget which, the perfect woman or something
Quagmire - a swamp
Mamba du Mal - 'snake of death'
Caligari Carnival - something or other of Dr Caligara, some sort of horror novel/movie/both
Squalor - mess
(I apologise for the vagueness of these... I can't find the website I got them from gonk )
ANAGRAMS FROM THE HOSTILE HOSPITAL Lisa N Lootnday - Alison Donalty (Cover design) Monty Kensicle - Lemony Snicket Ned H Rirger - Red Herring - possibly in reference to... Carrie E Abelabudite - Beatrice Baudelaire Eriq Bluthetts - Brett Helquist Linda Rhaldeen - Daniel Handler
There are a few more where those came from, but that's all I can remember - Mum figured them all out on sight when she first saw the list. I seem to recall we made a translation of all of them. And I need not mention all the anagrams of "Count Olaf" scattered throughout. Not the least being "Al Funcoot", the famous playwright.

Eheheh. So it was the other way round with the whole Klaus-Sunny-murder thing. Meh. My apologies.
Virginian Wolfsnake - Virginia Woolf obviously. Not to be let near a typewriter rolleyes
Damocles Dock - It has the sword over it - the Greek/Roman legend of the king and servant who swapped places, the servant noticed after a helluva lot of partying that omigod there's a SWORD hanging over my head, went back to his poor, yet safe, servant life. Or something.
Captain Sham - Oh come now. How can you not understand this one?
Vice Principal Nero - Rome's emperor Nero who played the violin or fiddle while Rome burnt.
Coach Genghis - Genghis Khan, Mongol conqueror. Originally, I was to be named for him.
Remora and Bass (last name of teachers at Prufrock Prep) - fish names...

DarkDragonDemonica Beatrice - some Dante poem, I forget which, the perfect woman or something It's in reference to Dante's The Divine Comedy, a really amazing epic poem. In it, Beatrice is the guide through heaven and Dante's idea of a perfect woman. (more info here ) Also, I don't think Violet has anything at all to do with violent, given her nature.

Violet was actually one of the lawyers of the Sunny-Klaus case. Quiditch.com (is that spelled right? try alternate spellings...) has the best ASOUE Literary reference page for not only names but other things. Oh, and punctilio means, essentially, truth. How i-stinkin'-ronic. pirate

Just accidentally found a new one for this..
Famous short story by J.D. Salinger is "For Esme with Love and Squalor" (Esme Squalor perchance?) To boot, Salinger's first name is Jerome.
