Lydia shook her head, clearing her thoughts of the awful memory and replying to Lucius, "I think we should go now. If I don't move, my leg will stiffen and hurt even more." She emerged from the water, shivering a little from the icy intensity, and let herself dry for a fraction of a second before saying quietly, to herself, "Sorry."
The memory had shaken her more than she thought it might have. Now she remembered why she had forgotten it; it was much too disturbing to even want to remember. While thinking of it, she thought she could almost smell the sickly odor of rotting flesh wafting up into her nostrils, and her eyes began to water. Who was the foal? The name was on the tip of her tongue... Ro-... Ros-... Rosemary! That was her name. She was an elegant young foal, being of perfect size and weight. And she had the prettiest brown eyes...
Lydia shook her head. The memory was nothing but that; an event that took place years ago. Nothing current. Nothing worth remembering. Or was it?
"Let's go," she said suddenly, making her way past Lucius. Her leg was completely free of blood, but she still had a slight limp; oh well.

Lucius gave an internal shrug and set off after her. A few long strides brought him level wither her and a glance at the sky confirmed that they were heading southwards. It was true, she would probably get stiff if they remained where they were but... such urgency? It was probably best left unquestioned by the look on her face; if she wanted him to know, she would tell most likely.
"I expect we'll be by the sea in a couple of weeks provided we travel for a good few hours each day," the stallion commented more for something to say than for the need to communicating such information. "It's not so very far from here and I expect there's still grass to eat there; lots of storms but the air is too damp for the grass to get snowed under very often."
Internally, Lucius worried. If only he knew what the trouble was he might be able to help or at least give some comfort. As it was, all he could do was walk close to the mare and hope that his presence helped somehow.

She stopped suddenly, flicking her tail at her rump and fluttering her wings a bit. "Weeks?!" she exclaimed, her eyes wide. "How come it'll take weeks?"
She paused, then laughed. "I can't stand to be near you for weeks," she joked, bumping her shoulder into his as she continued.
Her mind raced with thoughts as she plodded along painfully. Did the minihumans leave Rosemary the way she was? Or did they dispose of her body as they did her life? Lydia growled a little. Yes, growled.
"Did you know anyone called Rosemary when you were a foal?" she suddenly asked her companion, a soft glaze spreading over her eyes. "Please, answer truthfully; it means the world to me."
She looked at the ground, waiting for the answer. Of course he didn't know Rosemary, stupid Lydia! You knew Rosemary her whole life, and everyone that she knew, you knew as well! she said to herself. She winced slightly as a bug landed on her injured leg, and she flicked it off with an immense amount of pain.

The stallion smiled faintly at the Bae's jest; it was good to know that she was enjoying his company as much as he was her's. "Well it is quite a way to teh coast and..."
Rosemary? What an odd question to ask him out of the blue but she looked as if she desperatly wanted to know. Needed to know. Her eyes had gone far away and her voice soft, almost not there.
"...No, I never knew anyone by that name," the orange-winged Aeri replied after a few moments, watching his battered friend carefully. Was this somehow connected to her flinching from the idea of going north.
Lucius frowned internally, still puzzling over how anyone could hate or fear the idea of travelling to the human lands. All twolegs held Nequus as sacred beings and would do near anything to please them. The black-coated stallion gave an internal shrug; Lydia was not normal, how could he even begin to wonder after the workings of her psyche?

Lydia nodded slowly after a moment, keeping her gaze fixed on the ground. "Okay... thanks," she said slowly, shakily, as she continued on her injured leg.
Just this once, she looked back up to Lucius and offered a bit of her past, "She was my best friend." A slow, rolling tear slid down her cheek, landing, coincidentally, in her injury. It stung, but at least the tears were sterile.
She didn't want to say anything else voluntarily, but if Lucius asked, no matter what, she would answer. She actually had a friend that didn't run off, or, well, die. And she didn't want to lose him over some silly past.
Her hoof struck a rock and caused her to lose a step, fumbling with her injured leg and almost touching her nose to the ground as she tripped. Straightening herself out, she blushed and almost cried with desperation; she felt as though she was a clumsy oaf, only living at this moment to make others feel graceful. She couldn't do anything right; hell, she couldn't save her best friend from a horrible death, she couldn't walk right, and she assumed that Lucius would walk off from her during the night and she'd never see him again.
The Bae mare huffed a little, "This is the longest that I've ever had a companion," she said quietly.

The muscular stallion paused for a moment at the Bae's words. What had happened to this friend of her's? Whatever it was, it seemed to trouble the bloodied mare deeply. Had she died or just left? Lucius internally cursed himself for not being better with people; he could think of nothing better to do than nudge Lydia's shoulder gently as she recovered from her stumble. She didn't deserve to be so sad.
"...Well, you'll have me around for a good while yet I expect," the black-coated Aeri managed eventually. "I enjoy your company, a lot, and can't think of any reason for us to go separate ways in the immediate future." The stallion smiled gently under his blood-red helmet. "You'll have another friend soon in Vox; you won't be alone if I have anything to do with it."

Lydia smiled weakly. "You're my best, and only, friend, Lucius," she said softly, leaning against him and burying her face in his shoulder. Another tear slid down her cheek, dropping to the ground.
"Now..." she said, straightening herself up. If she was to meet this... Vox... she'd have to be on her best behavior. "Who is this Vox? I know he's your adopted son, but I don't understand how this all works..." She huffed and tittered a little. A screaming wind had picked up, lashing against her face with a primal rage that caused her to wince and close her eyes.
"Let's get behind those trees!" she shouted out, struggling against the wind to get behind the trees. Though she knew that they would cause some protection, she worried; what if they were blown over?

The black stallion snorted, startled by the sudden wind and nodded his agreement. Placing his face into the wind, the red-maned Aeri set off for the trees that his companion had indicated. He felt suddenly extremely glad of his bulk as he saw how the Bae mare at his side was struggling. The boned Nequus adjusted his path to walk a little closer to her, hoping that he would shield her from some of the wind, or at least provide some moral support.
"He's a young green-coated Aeri, Vox that it," Lucius called over the wind. "Very well-spoken, very sweet and gentle. I expect he's about full grown by now. He loves the moon and the night and the world in general so far as I can tell. He wonders at every new thing he comes across and hasn't a cruel bone in his body so far as I can discover."
And that last trait was a deeply comforting one at this moment in time; seeing Lydia cry was near unbearable. Vox being Vox however, need to be concerned that his Bae friend's feelings might be intentionally hurt. He doubted that the green Nequus would manage to do it by accident either; he always seemed to consider his words carefully. The tall stallion snorted to clear the dry feeling in his nostrils that the intense wind had brought to him and pressed on towards the trees.
