super_nerd42 It is ridiculous that the media today promotes the toothpick image for a woman. I am a size twelve and I think I look great. I don't want to lose weight because I don't want to let the media and general population think they have won. I don't want to be a typical girl. And I don't want to lower myself to the expectations of the media's view of a beautiful girl. I am not ultra skinny, I have a huge nose, long fingers/toes (wear a size 11 shoe), but I love how I look. Most importantly I love who I am. woa we have like the same body. except i dunno.. my nose isn't that big or anything. it's just there.

going back to the body hair thing [by the way, blue/purple armpits would be supercool], i don't think that it should be taboo to go natural. i believe that every girl should have a choice of whether they want to shave or not. i'm anti-body-hair on myself, so i shave almost everywhere because i want to get rid of it. this isn't really socially accepted either; i've gotten a bunch of "ewww, gross, why do you shave there?" comments.
this would require an extreme change in society today, however. for example, i'm on a swim team, and in your bathing suit, it's pretty obvious whether you've shaved recently or not. a couple years ago, most of my friends from swimming had already started shaving their legs, but one girl's legs were still defiantly hairy. my friends and i [yes, this was a horrible thing to do - i admit it] bullied her into shaving. the exact same thing happened to another of my friends at swim camp. i see my 10-year-old sister and her friends beginning to do the exact same thing with two other little girls. children need to be raised in an environment that is supportive of either method.

I feel pressure and such all the time. I can't really pinpoint exactly why I feel it, specifically I mean. Society constantly bombards you of images of whats hot and whats not. And I also feel pressure to look as pretty and be as skinny as my friends are. I can't seem to really get comfortable with myself to just accept how I look and not constantly beat myself up for not looking like others. I get judged much harsher because of my body, and it really wears me down. I'm sensitive, and with the constant harrasment from people, whether I know them or not, I just start feeling like s**t. And it all just builds up. I can't seem to really go anywhere without having to deal with the crap someone has to say to me. Its difficult.

Meh...This is a reason why I do not like our society as much. Seeing as how I'm a bigger girl than most, I feel as if something is wrong with me. Very wrong with me. Most everyone I know says that I'm an awesome person, but it doesn't make up for the fact that I'm not a size 0.

blue armpit reminds me of the blue man.
well today society is crazy with all those women and man looking skinny. body image had affect women and men and it had effect on all of us. obessity had become an epidemic in the us. if your inside is happy then outside doesn't really matter.
I hate diet commerical and it is horrible because sometimes makes people feel that their not fit or just plain annoying
im a size 2 and can fit size 0, however im not that kind of lady that are obsessed about their weight. It actually due to my exercise for 15min and being on the track team one summer. also im almost like a vegan. now my problem is finding a pants that fit and its not too big, razz xp sweatdrop

gah. i was reading cosmogirl last night and there was an article detailing ways to brighten up your ponytail. usually i skip over boring articles like that, but since i often wear a ponytail, i figured i could use some brightening up. there was a picture of this girl's back. her shoulderblades were sticking insanely out of her back, at an unnatural - painful, even - angle. and of course her brightened-up ponytail was going down her back between them.
i am planning to write a letter to the magazine about it. and maybe i will scan the page for the viewing pleasure of everyone on the internet.

I agree with basically everything that's been said here, so I'm just going to add this:
In our society toothpick women are considered sexy, but let's not forget others. Heck if you go back a hundred years people here were still wearing corsets. So this things come and go, you just gotta learn how to fit in in your own way. What I mean by that is that you have to find your own place whether you follow the trend or do the opposite. I like how the renaissance italians like large blonde women with rosy cheeks. What's more inviting then that?

I <3 colored armpits. My friends and I did it once for Halloween, we were Umpalumpa's (sp?) but the indigo dye in my bathroom is calling to me...hmmm.
Anyway... Ideal body weight in this country seems to be something like a rollercoaster. I don't really know that much about the history (or herstory xp ) of this subject but I do know that since about the 60 ultra skinny tall "model" types have been the countries ideal for women, but before that it was the full figure, the Marlin Monroe's... and if you go back past that skinny and ultra pale was the thing, wearing stomach synching corsets and drinking small amounts of poisons to make the skin pale. I'm sure the current standards of beauty will change again, and weather it changes for the better or not is up to all of us.

A few months ago my mom realised that she was, in fact, aging and decided to slow down the effects as much as possible. She lost a LOT of weight, bought a new wardrobe, constantly has herself waxed and her hair done.
Now, that's all fine for her. She says that she's happy, and while I think it's ridiculous she says shes feeling healthier (she's become vegetarian and she work out) so I guess it's not all bad...
But for me it's a different story. We look VERY similar, and are always being compaired. I wouldn't say that I was overweight, but I'm deffinately bigger than her and I find that she gets more attention when we go out together.
It's not a very big self esteem builder that she's much older than me but get treated better than me when we go out. People compliment her when she's in the changing rooms at the mall, and everyone tells me how pretty my mom looks.
Now truthfully, I don't think either of us are that attractive, but that people tell her that she's so pretty because she's thinner? Not right. Also, what does that show me about society?
I expressed my concerns to her and she said that I was being silly and making it up because I was having self confidence issues....well, duh.

I have this issue where my mother was constantly teased when she was little, so now shes paranoid about the way she looks and she spends her time telling me & my sister how we are so fat as well as various other things...so bloody hypocritical

kreepykami people who think they need to be a toothpick are just dumb. was venus goddess of beauty skinny? NO! Alright, you do have a point, but that was then...way back when? Today, the images you see in magazines of models (which are graphically inhanced..hence, 'fake') are the real beauty images...go figure.

lil_wiccan I have this issue where my mother was constantly teased when she was little, so now shes paranoid about the way she looks and she spends her time telling me & my sister how we are so fat as well as various other things...so bloody hypocritical my father has the same thing. it isn't so bad with me - i'm 5'5", 125ish lbs, so he thinks i'm fine - but with my sister, he's constantly trying to get her to lose weight. i will admit that i have teased my sister about it as well, but i'm trying not to.
edie sedgwick (sp?). 5'7", 90 pounds. a very popular model in the 60's, i think it was.
