16 :: A Touch of Spring ::
I woke up early again today, just to see the sunrise. It's such a pretty occasion, too. I noticed that my coat is one of the colors the sky and sun are when the latter is rising. The thought makes me happy, though I can't wait to see the sunsets next week. Sometimes I cheat and get up early, then stay up late to watch the sunset, but then I normally don't wake up in time to see the whole sunrise, which makes me sad, so I give them both a turn.
Anyway, after the sun was no longer interesting and became too bright and yellow to stare at, I looked around and saw another nequus. I flew over to him, and he seemed incredibly nervous, poor thing. He was such a lovely color, though, a very handsome, deep blue. He had a snow-white mane and tail, too, with splotches of white on his butterfly-wings, really a lovely sight to look at. His name, Virgil, suits him well, too.
He was really nervous, and he didn't seem too keen to talk too much. Maybe he's just really nervous around others? That's what I think, anyway. He said he wasn't used to others, which is believable, poor dear.
He told me about stereotypes, too, though I didn't know what the word was when he first said it, I've never heard it before. He seems like a very nice, lovely fellow, though. He gave me lots of compliments, too. Another that I hope will gain some more confidence.
I caught a few flickers of my past while I was with him, talking about clumsiness. It was really strange.. I saw a little orange creme foal trying to fly, but instead doing a full flip and landing on her back. I saw the same foal in a different setting, running, stumbling, falling...
Before I could remember much else, though, a little thing jumped onto his back. Startled me a bit, but it was recognizable immediately for me. Poor Virgil couldn't see it right away though, and he spooked and bolted. It turned out to be an adorable little rit named Skittles, and he seems to have grown attached to me, he's now my new best friend!
But, poor Virgil bolted, as I said, so I had to persuade him to come back and to try to calm him down, reassure him that he wasn't in any mortal peril, though I don't know why he constantly thinks everything is out to get him. Poor dear.
Skittles and I got on well since then, and he's sticking with me from now on. After that little encounter, a walk seemed the ideal thing to soothe Virgil's nerves and still get to know him better. I hope he gets more confidence, and I hope that I can see him sometime soon.

17 :: Our Beginning ::
Niz asked me to keep track of my view of th' day we met, though I've no idea why in th' world she'd want me to. Well, anyways, I had just been practicin' climbin' trees when I saw a big blue bae come over, so I climbed to the top of the tree an' waited. Then I saw Niz comin', an' they were talkin' so nice an' so I just waited an' listened. Finally I got tired of layin' in th' tree, so I up an' jumped. Th' blue bae, Virgil, was closer to th' tree, so I landed on him, to my cost. I shoulda tried to land on Niz instead, but eh. He up an' bolted on me, but luckily I didn't get stepped on. I was petrified by then. What had I done? I thought they would both stomp on me for pullin' a stunt like that, but they didn't, though Virgil seemed to be nervous afterwards. I told them my name and Niz said she'd keep others from steppin' on me, then put me on her back, which felt kinda weird. I haven't been picked up like that since I was just a little cub. Then we went on a walk to, I think, calm Virgil down a bit.
An', uh... That's about it, so...

18 :: Winter's Legacy ::
Lately I've been studying the outskirts of D'ob again, and Skittles has been sticking to certain trees near where Nyx stays. Today I was taking a nice flight to a brook I haven't been to before, which was a good decision. There I met Sol, who looked in bad shape, poor thing. He was grazing by the stream when I happened upon him, and I immediately offered my aid to him. His coat was matted and dirty, covered in dried blood, as was his mane. He has shiny metal greaves that protect the front of his forelegs, and also a stone pendant that hangs from a chain around his neck. Very lovely, but the poor thing was thin as a rail.
We talked quite a bit, and he told me how he got his special adornments, and I told him about my memory, or rather, lack thereof. After a while, we went for a good run through the valley towards Nyx, so she and Sol could talk. It feels good to bring stray nequus to her when they need to rest or recover, because the valley is such a wonderful place, especially when you know you're part of a large herd. Safety in numbers, though I don't know where I heard that before...

19 :: A Green Aeri ::
Today was really fun. I had been wandering around the valley for a while before the sunset. I had promised Skittles I'd show him the best spot to watch it, but when we got there we saw Zak! He's a really big green Aeri, and he seemed rather nice. He's been looking for his friend Aitumn, poor guy, so it was the least I could do to offer my help. Aitumn is my friend too, and though I don't know where he is, I offered to go look for him immediately. I came straight here to note this down, and I'm going to wander around Shrilal for a few days in hopes of finding him. I don't think he's here, but you never know!
Ooh, flowers!!

20 :: The Big Bad Green Aeri ::
Niz had promised me she'd show me the best place to watch the sunset, though I was really sleepy so I might've fallen asleep. Ah well. When we got there, there was this giant Aeri guy there. He gave me the creeps just looking at him. I wish we would've just turned 'n fled right there, but Niz decided to go 'n say hi. I wish she hadn't.
He was so scary. I couldn't move while lookin' at him. He kept giving us nasty looks whenever Niz wasn't looking, I could tell he wasn't good at all. He said he was looking for his 'friend' Aitumn, but I don't think they're friends at all. I feel bad for this Aitumn guy, whoever he is. I wouldn't want Zak looking for me. *shudders* Thankfully we left after Niz offered to look for Aitumn, 'n came straight here. I never want to see that scary brute again...

21 :: Exploring ::
Today was wonderful! I had only been looking for a little while, when I found Aitumn! He's hard to miss, really. He seemed a bit stressed out, though, poor thing. I told him Zak is looking for him, and he told me not to go looking for the green Aeri, so I won't, though I don't understand what's wrong with him.
Anyway, he told us a story about a pretty purple mare with pink crescent moons under her eyes, and a mean dark red stallion who tricked her into being trapped in a haunted forest. It was a very good story! I hope he tells me more later.
He also told us that he has a little tree in Shrilal! I think there's only one fruit, but I'm not sure. He promised to let us see it when it hatches! I can hardly wait! I bet it will be adorable. I hope he tells it lots of stories, too.

22 :: Exploring ::
Well, we finally found Aitumn, 'n when Niz stopped I ended up falling over. Why can't she just plain walk somewhere? Ah well. He told Niz not to go near Zak again, which I can understand. I'll make sure she doesn't, for both our sakes, though she doesn't seem to understand he's bad yet.
Oh, Aitumn told us a story. I don't think Niz got the full meaning of it, but oh well. I'm going to try to get it through her skull, too. It might take a while, though..
I also have something to look forward to, now. Aitumn promised us he would let us see his foal whenever it's born, and I can't wait. Foals are so cute...

23 :: Cliffside Encounters ::
Since summer is almost over, I left Skittles in my tree here and I went to the ocean! I was looking for Maurice, and to my surprise he came over almost right away! It was really neat. He taught me how to glide down from the cliffs to the beach, and it was so much fun!
We talked for a little while, and that was lots of fun. Then, he offered to show me around the beach! It was so much fun getting to see him again, and I had a wonderful first trip to the ocean! He wants to come back to the valley and he wants to meet Skittles! I can hardly wait to introduce them!

24 :: Close Encounter ::
I was still around the ocean today, wondering if I'd see Maurice again, when I saw a pretty fire-colored mare. She was just standing on the beach, staring out at the sea - it was kinda odd. Said her love flew out over the ocean a few years ago and never came back. Poor thing, she's been there waiting for him ever since. I kinda suggested that she move on, but I really hope he comes back to her. That would be really nice.

The slender mare cropped at the chilled grass at her hooves - what she could uncover from the blanket of snow on the ground, that is. A sudden storm had surfaced the night before, and covered the entire area with snow. The cold air wasn't too bad - only made her shiver once or twice - but it helped that Skittles was curled up on her back, keeping her warm with his fuzzy furriness. However, the grass was stiff and cold, chilling her insides, and that wasn't fun at all. At least the sun was out; that was a plus. "I think we should go visit the two-legs soon, Skittles. What do you think?" They always had food to share; she just had cold, hard grass - no fruits she knew grew in the cold months, except fruit trees, but you couldn't eat those.
"Snnzz.. hu.. Wha? Oh, right; two-legs. Uh, sure, Niz, sounds good." The two-legs were strange creatures, but at least they had blankets and the like to keep them warm, and they liked to give them food. Mmm, fish.. He hadn't had fish in a while.
Niz grinned, flicking her curly tail, and shook out her mane. "How 'bout a race? Ready, go!" She said and, without warning, sped forward with a burst of energy - just like a foal. This sent the unprepared Rit flying backwards off the mare's back, and into a pile of cold, unforgiving snow. With an small growl, the rainbow-spotted feline chased after the red-creme Ichsa as fast as his little legs could carry him. He was comfortable! The winds had picked up though, and the sun was quickly hidden away by gray storm clouds. A flurry of snow started down and Niz instinctively headed for the nearest grouping of trees, still running from her little companion. Said little companion saw a flash of orange-red run off to the side and he followed it, trying to see through the snow. He paused at the tree line and looked around as best he could, though he didn't see his charge anywhere. With a sigh and a shiver, he climbed swiftly up the nearest tree to see if he could get a better look. "Niz! Niz, where are you?"
The irritated stallion stood, glaring at the snow falling all around him, and settled more comfortably into the shallow cave he'd found in the mountain. He knew the red mountains were the Katilenuck territory, but he also knew that they didn't inhabit the whole place. There were no signs of them here, so here he stayed to wait out the sudden storm. At least he didn't have to deal with his mate - eeuugh, his mate. The unfortunate mating to that sorry bint had improved his parents' standing in the herd, while he had to deal with the annoying idiot day in and day out. Constantly nagging him about this or that - how he didn't love her, how he never wanted to be around her, anything she could think of - it wasn't his fault he didn't care a bit for the ugly, ratty mare, and no one else seemed to either. He'd rather be alone than with her.
But it seemed he wouldn't be alone in the storm. A pretty mare had wandered in, glancing around with worry in her eyes before she spotted him - and her face considerably brightened. "Hi there!" She beamed, tossing her snow-sprinkled mane a bit, trying to get more of the flakes off before they melted. "I'm looking for my best friend, Skittles. He's little and white, with rainbow spots on him, and he's a Rit. Have you seen him?"
"No, 'fraid not," he answered, eying Niz curiously, a few ideas forming in his mind. "But you'd best stay here, the storm's only getting worse. You can look for him when it lets up, it would be much easier to find him then when you can actually see." It usually didn't work when he met a pretty mare - they usually left him by himself again, but he could hope.
What he said made perfect sense to the silly mare, and she nodded her head and pranced into the cave more. "Oh! Silly me," she said with a grin. "My name's Nizhoni, but everyone just called me Niz. What's your name?"
The Ichsa stallion blinked. A name. He couldn't give her his real name, certainly. Quick; name, name.. "Vulo," he offered with a smile and a polite nod. "Vulo, is my name, and it's very nice to meet you, Nizhoni, and might I say that you have a truly lovely name."
She blushed a bit and beamed at the sweet-talking stallion, and bobbed her head. "I really like your name too, and thank you. It's nice to meet you, Vulo." To save herself from further embarrassment, she turned and looked out the cave entrance. "..do you think he'll be okay?" She asked of her new friend, ears flicking back in worry. "He's awfully small.."
"I'm sure he'll be fine," he cooed as he slid up next to her, quite boldly draping a tendril wing over her back. "Come, let's talk and find some way to pass the time, but further into the cave - it's warmer there, and the wind and snow won't get to us there."
"Oh, of course," she said with a smile, turning and pacing to the very back of the cave, then settled herself comfortably on the hard floor with a small sigh. "Do you live here, Vulo?"
"Live here?" Ghastly suggestion, but it certainly was better than living with his arranged mate. "Uhh.. I do, yes, all by myself. Where do you live?"
"In the valley, in D'ob," she offered, for the first time getting a good look around the cave. She'd seen lived-in caves before, and this certainly did not look like anyone lived there. Maurice's cave had decorations and pretty things everywhere - this just looked.. cold. "Have you lived here long?"
"Uh - no, not long," he dodged, settling down next to her, and draping a wing over her again. Hopefully he'd be able to get quite far with this mare.. she didn't seem to disagree with anything he did. She didn't seem to be excited about it, either. "I left my herd recently, they didn't like me much, I didn't have many friends, so I came here. What about you?"
"Oh.." She said with a frown, flicking her ears back again. "How sad.. I joined a herd when I decided to live in the valley a few years ago. That's the first thing I can remember, was waking up and wandering around the valley, and the first nequus I met offered me a place in her herd. She's very nice, you should meet her," Niz said with a grin as she recalled the blue-splotched Aeri mare. She hadn't seen Nyx in quite some time, she'd need to seek her out again.
"Ah, uhh.. I will, and -- remember? Wait, you can't remember anything before that?" He asked, truly astonished. Did that mean she didn't remember anything at all? Had to re-learn everything? It was obvious she hadn't remembered certain things, he assumed with a devious, almost undetectable smirk, as he leaned closer. "That must be awful."
"It kind of is," she agreed, inwardly wondering why he was so close. Maybe he was just cold? He probably was, living here all by himself. She was cold too, but she still loved the snow. "But, since I can't remember anything, I don't miss anything either. I woke up and knew my name - or at least, I think it's my real name - and that was about it. Don't know my parents or friends or anything else."
"How terrible," he said, hiding his grin. It was like a miracle - a night with a mare who remembered nothing, who seemingly knew nothing. She seemed to have a child-like way to express herself, and the memory-loss was probably why. Her body and mind may have reset itself to the way it was when she was just a foal, and she hasn't grown up yet. That meant... Oh, the fun he could have.. "Well, we don't have to talk about that anymore if it upsets you," which it didn't seem to, "so we can find some other way to pass the time."
Niz grinned, knowing the best way to pass the time that was ever created. "D'you want to play a game?" She suggested, offering the stallion who was awkwardly close a grin - she'd almost bumped his nose with hers when she turned.
He couldn't help but grin himself. "A game sounds like a wonderful idea, and I have the perfect game in mind.. It's a lot of fun, but you probably haven't ever played it before."
"Really?" The naive mare said, wide-eyed. She could hardly believe there was a game she hadn't played. "What is it?"
"It's a game just for adults, and just nequus. You're not supposed to talk about it with anyone, because it's a secret, but.. since I can tell you really like games, I'll play it with you. Alright? But you have to do exactly what I say, okay?" The devious stallion said with a grin. She was almost as dumb as his mate, but in a different, much better way.
"Sure! What do we do?" She asked with a grin, ears perked forward in excitement. A secret game? This was almost too good to be true! "Oh, can I tell Skittles about it when we find him?"
"No no, you can't tell anyone, otherwise it wouldn't be a secret. Okay?"
"Aww, okay..." Darn, Skittles loved games..
"I know, I know. Alright, now, I'll show you how to play the secret game. Don't move..."

"But... I thought you were going to help me look for Skittles?" The green-eyed mare asked, tilting her head a bit and furrowing her brows in confusion. "You said after the storm let up, we'd go look for him together."
"I know I said that.. but some things have come up; some long lost relatives need my help, that sort of thing. Okay?" The predominantly-black stallion said, hoping she'd buy it.
"But no one's come to tell you that. How do you know?" No one had been there since she got there the night before, and he certainly didn't seem in any hurry to tell her before she'd gotten there, if he knew before that is.
"Oh, uh... I.. I saw it in a dream," he said with a nod, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye to see if she'd accept that.
She merely looked at him suspiciously, not really sure if people could have dreams like that... but if he thought he saw it like that, then oh well. "Well... I hope they're okay, wherever they are. Bye Vulo!" She said with a smile, then turned and galloped through the snow as best as she could.
A smirk slowly spread itself across the stallion's muzzle, and he chuckled a bit before turning towards the other direction and trotting off.
*** "Skittles? Skittles! Where are you?" Niz called with a sigh, swiveling her ears around in the hopes of hearing anything from her fuzzy companion. "Skittles!"
"N-N-Niz? Th-that you?" The ball of frozen fluff stuttered, poking his snow-covered nose out from under a bush. "Where'd you b-been?"
"Oh, Skittles! Finally, I found you! Are you okay?" She asked, leaning down and nosing the snow off him before picking him up by the scruff and setting him down on her back, and shivered a bit after. He was cold! "C'mon, let's go to the two-legs now and get you all warmed up and fed."
The rainbow-patterned Rit sneezed before violently shaking off as much snow as he could, and settled down as far as he could into the Ichsa's back, trying to get warm. "So, w-where were you all n-night?"
"Oh, I went into a cave cuz the snow was so bad, and there was another Ichsa in there. He said I should wait to look for you until morning, when she snow wasn't as bad, and then he'd help me look."
"Well, I d-don't see him n-now."
"No.. he said he had to go help family or something, I guess. It was weird.." She said, furrowing her brows again as she cantered through the thick snow towards Ryuten.
"So, what did you t-two do?" He asked suspiciously, narrowing his eyes. He didn't trust stallions much - Niz was too naive to know any better about them.
"We talked," she said honestly, although she refrained from mentioning the secret game. There wasn't much to say about that game, either; it wasn't even fun. She didn't know why Vulo liked it so much.
"..that's it? Just talked? About what?"
"Oh, about where he's from and everything, little things like that. Nothing really important. You know how some nequus are, not good with coming up with things to talk about."
"Uh huh..." He said, narrowing his eyes again. "What was his name?"
"Vulo," she said, weaving through the trees. "We'll be there in a few minutes, I think."

Oh s**t. Oh s**t oh s**t oh s**t s**t s**t. Oh, no...
The black-coated stallion paced nervously back and forth in front of the little creme, black, and white tree. There was no mistaking it. What was he going to do? She wasn't there yet, and none of his family knew - they had just been told that he wanted to visit his tree; an acceptable journey, although his mate protested to his random absences. What should he do? They couldn't know about what he'd done. They couldn't know. But.. what to do?
That's it. He'd have to get rid of it.
He turned toward the intertwined tree and took a deep breath, then --
"Vulo!"
He froze.
The Ichsa mare who unknowingly added her colors to the tree paused in front of him with a grin. "What are you doing here? And what's that?" She asked, looking from him to the tree. Suddenly, it dawned on her. "Are you having a tree? Oh, that's wonderful! Who's the mother?" She asked, glancing around in hopes of seeing her, while Vulo just stared at her, dumbfounded. Her naivety was astounding at times.
However, Skittles just needed one look at the tree to understand everything, and he snarled at the stallion. Niz jumped a little, startled that Skittles could even make that noise. "You disgusting, sickening pile of drek! How dare you!" His ears pinned back to his skull and his claws unsheathed themselves as he glared daggers at Vulo. Without warning he jumped onto the other Ichsa's back, digging his claws in as deep as he could and biting a tendril. The stallion whinnied in surprise and reared, pawing at the air as he stumbled back on his hind legs. Slamming his forehooves down, he began bucking and kicking, spinning in circles and doing everything to try and get the offending creature off. The little ball of fluff stayed firmly rooted where he was, only freeing one paw at a time from Vulo's back so that he could slash at whatever was within his reach. He kept biting down as hard as possible on the tendril wings, hoping to snap them or something so he wouldn't be able to fly, just to do something to the despicable creature.
Niz just stood there staring, wide-eyed. She'd never seen Skittles act so strangely, but... now that she thought about it, that color of reddish-orange on the tree matched her coat perfectly. It was almost as if...
"Skittles..." She said nervously, ears slowly twisting backwards against her skull. "Why does that look.. like me? What's going on..?"
"Get it off!!" The stallion screeched, swinging his head down and flipping himself over forward, hoping to squash Skittles between his back and the ground. The clever little Rit swiftly clambered onto the stallion's belly, clawing his way up onto his back as the frantic creature stumbled back up, tossing his head. The Rit clawed his way up the Ichsa's neck, suddenly biting down hard on one of his ears and pulling as hard as he could. Vulo shrieked again and swung his head quickly, sending Skittles soaring through the air and onto the ground, with the top part of his ear still locked securely in his teeth. He reared again, eyes rolling in pure panic, then he turned and bolted as fast as he possibly could.
The rainbow-spotted Rit growled loudly after spitting out the chunk of ear he'd torn off the offending stallion, then glared up at Niz. "What did you do?!"
"I didn't do anything! What's going on? What's happening?" She cried nervously, staring at her companion and at the retreating figure. "Why did you attack him?"
"Because of that!" He shouted, pointing at the little tree.
"The tree? But.. why?" She asked, glancing from him to the growing foliage and back. "What's going on?"
"What did you two do in the cave? What happened? I don't care what promises you made to him, tell me now," he glared, ears pinned to his skull.
*** "He tricked you, Niz," the Rit said later, much calmer now though still terribly angry with the stallion. He patted the naive mare's muzzle with a paw, studying her as she laid beside the tree. "What you two did, that should only happen when you want to have foals. He tricked you because he could, because you didn't know any better. And now you know."
"But.. but.. he was so nice, and he said it was a game.." She cried, curling up and glancing at the innocent tree next to her. "I didn't know, Skittles, I didn't.."
"I know, Niz, but don't worry. Do you want it?"
"Want what?" She sniffed.
"The tree," he said bluntly. "Do you want it?"
"The tree? Oh, I already have one. Why would I want two?"
"Okay, then we can leave it here and go back to the humans. I'm sure--"
"Wait! Don't foals come from trees?"
"...yes, Niz, I said that before. What you did, you're only supposed to do with someone you love when you want to have foals."
"So foals are going to come from this tree?"
"Yes.."
"Then no!" She shrieked, staring at him wide-eyed. "We're not leaving! Something could happen to it or it could get hurt or worse! We're going to stay and protect it. Besides, it'd be fun to have a little foal as a friend."
"The foal would be your son or daughter, Niz. You're going to be a mother."
"...really?" Oh, dear.

Well.. We're still by the tree. It's gotten lots bigger, and looks more like an actual tree instead of a weird stick in the ground. I can see the fruit, too; there's just one, I'm not sure why. Skittles is trying his best to bring me good food, but not much grows in winter so he's having a hard time. Maybe that's why there's only one fruit. I'm not leaving though, I'm going to stay right here until it hatches. I wonder if it'll be a girl or a boy? It looks so pretty already.
I haven't seen Vulo since Skittles attacked him and drove him off. I... I don't think I want to see him again. Skittles says that he tricked me, lied to me and the like - I'm not sure why he'd do that. But if he did it on purpose, like Skittles said, then he's no friend of mine.
Skittles says I need to be less trusting of people, and I need to look out for myself more often, because he can't always be with me to tell me if someone's trying to take advantage of me or not. I guess he's right - he wasn't with me when I met Vulo, and that was all my fault. I still feel really bad for Skittles, but he says he's fine with it now. I think he's kind of excited to get to play with a foal - I am too. i just hope it's doing okay, because I haven't been eating much because Skittles has a hard time finding things, and he can't carry that much, either. I've gotten really tired lately, and I can hardly move that much.. But still, I'm not leaving until this fruit hatches and I have a new foal.
I hope it hatches soon...
