rurouni_starchild Looks like cover art just came out for #1 and #2. Is it just new cover art with a few extras or is it actually a new book?

Donut Conspiracy Is it just new cover art with a few extras or is it actually a new book? I'm not sure. I was in a used bookstore the other day and saw that there are already paperback editions of the regular books. So perhaps this is a retelling of the stories in the Penny Dreadful style as was mentioned before? I'm honestly not sure... It would seem silly to have two paperback editions with just new cover art... confused

I know that Portugal has different covers, and other European countries probably do too. (My sister was there last month.) So who knows, it could be for any number of things.

I've only seen the Original (British) covers and the American covers for Harry Potter. (I live in Australia) I prefer the Original covers just because the American ones look somewhat cartoonish. Different cover art for the ASOUE books... Well, there's the American (Standard) covers, which unlike Harry Potter are the ones we have in Australia. There's the British ones, which are black... Then there's the movie tie-in editions of the first three. And I've also seen a Japanese edition of the Hostile Hospital: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Hostile_hospital_jpn.jpg (I don't know if they have the rest of the books there.)

They can't really be retold in a penny dreadful 'style' since that's not really a style of writing. It's just what they called serials in the Victorian/Edwardian era since they were almost always murder mysteries. It does seem silly to have two paperback versions, but I think the reason for this is sort of commercial. As far as I know, Scholastic owns the rights to the paperback version, not HarperCollins (correct me if I'm wrong) in some countries. By making these new, trade paperbackl, 'special' editions, HarperCollins can profit from a paperback version of the book without infringing on any copyright agreements. That's what I figure, anyway. You can't get the regular paperback version here unless you order it from the Scholastic book order. The only paperback I've ever seen in stores thus far was a French version.

Ah, right right, that may be it. I wonder what the extras might be. Yeah, I was surprised to see all the paperbacks in the used book store I was in, since I think the majority of major stores only carry the hardbacks. I wonder where they got all the paperbacks from (pretty sure they had close to all of them, up to 10 or 11)! xd

Yeah, I'm pretty sure, as a retailer, you can only sell the HarperCollins editions. Even if not, you'd probably have to make a choice between the Scholastic paperbacks or the hardcovers. The hardcovers bring in a lot more revenue, so... Well, let's just say, damn capitalism. On the bright side, I do find the hardcovers aesthetically pleasing, what with that 'Ex Libris' page and the unevenly cut pages...

They just make you want to turn them! whee I swear if I ever publish I book I want to have the pages cut like that! mrgreen But yeah I really like the hardcovers too, especially for the false cover of TUA.

Cutiebirdgal What if you like horseradish? The you must be A VILLAIN!!! Just kidding... kind of... I think it's titled as such because horseradish is bitter and a key component of the books, not nessesarily because one should avoid it.

This would make beaucoup de sense. The Baudelaire parents were shielding them from the truth of VFD, Captain Widdershins refused to tell them the truth about VFD, and not Snicket himself is telling us to avoid the truth, though no doubt he will publish it (however cryptically) for purchase.
