"Of course I am, you dunderhead!" Sparticus snapped. "Anyway, I'd still like to know what someone like you is doing here. I think I've got some time on my paws, so go on. Let's hear that long story," he said rolling his eyes. "Oh, and I better not get bored, or I'll claw your eyes out."

Richard sat down on an oddly rectangular rock and sighed, ignoring the cat's last remark. "Well," he began. He paused for a moment, trying to recollect the events that had recently occured.

"Well, lemme make myself comfortable, eh?" said Sparticus, as he leapt onto Richard's lap and snuggled into a sleeping position. Richard seemed not to notice. "Ahem," said Sparticus."

"Right, right," said Richard, finally coming out of his lost daze. "Okay, it all started when..."

"It all started when...?" asked Sparticus.

"It all started," Richard continued, slightly annoyed by the cat's impatience, "when I was walking thorugh the forest."

Richard blinked, his eyes getting hazy again. "I was walking through a forest, looking for healing herbs on the side of the road. They were for my Nanny, who has been ill with a deep cough. Her condition worsened a few night ago," he sighed deeply with worry. "I sought a physician, but he had no time for an elderly woman. He did give me a list of herbs though."

Sparticus interupted from Richard's lap, "The hag is probably better off dead. The elderly have nothing to live for." A cruel smirk appeared on the cat's mouth. "Except pain."

Richard stared at the cold hearted cat, his mouth flattening quickly. "What?" he said, stunned.

"Nothing, nothing," said Sparticus, putting on his innocent kitten face. "Please, do go on!"

"Pain? Nothing to liver for but pain?" said Richard, ignoring the cat's impatience, as he stared at him in shock. "And what, might I ask, is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing at all! Really!" Spartcus replied, licking his paw impatiently. "But really, would you get on with the story? Yeah, you're Nanny's sick, blah blah blah, but then what?"

"Well, there's not so much to it," said Richard. "I was looking for herbs and then I came across you."

"Oh, that's all, is it?" said Sparticus. "Well, I guess I couldn't expect much from a peasant boy anyway. Well, that killed a good five minutes," he said, yawning lazily as he stretched his paws across Richard's lap.

Sparticus abandoned Richard's lap as he rose from his seat. Scratching his head thoughtfully for a moment, Richard turned to Sparticus. "Who are you?" he asked.

"Sparticus the Great, of course!" said Sparticus. "I thought I'd mentioned that already?"

"Yes, but, who are you? Where are you from? Why are you here?"

"Oh, that!" said Sparticus. "Long story, it's a real bore...ah, you don't wanna hear it anyway. Well, nice meetin' you! Tootles!" he said, all to cheerily, as he turned and departed into the forest.

"Wait!" said Richard. " Where are you going?"

"Anywhere I like!" said Sparticus, as he countinued to stroll away. "Oh, by the way, you seem to have left one little detail out of your story."

Richard ran after the cat. "And what's that?" he asked, as he strolled alongside the cat.

"That sword, of course," said Sparticus with a cheery grin.

Richard looked at the old sword in his sheath and gave the cat a funny look. "It's just my father's sword. He gave it to me before he died," he explained and watched the cat's cheery grin fade a little. "I learned how to use it from the town swordmaster. It is dangerous in a world like this," Richard rolled his eyes and sighed.

The cat's grin wasn't as cheery and he asked, almost hopefully, "So, you didn't battle off any orcs or great knights to get it? You're not a deserted prince from a destroyed kingdom, looking for vengence"

Richard glared darkly. "No."

The grin started to become strained and Sparticus kept on, "You're father wasn't a lord and died in a battle against raiders or outlaws? He wasn't even the town mayor?"

Richard's intense glare stayed steady. "No," and he added, "My father died from another ordinary disease," his lips smirked bitterly, "The chicken pox."

The cat nearly fell over. "The--chicken pox!?" Sparticus blurted.

Richard smirked, enjoying the cat's outburst. He said, "Yes, the chicken pox. Why do you even care?" He smirked even more as the cat's eyes suddenly widened greatly as if in a panick. Richard wondered why what he told Sparticus had caused the cat to act this way.

*Revives thread*

Richard had no time to react as they both looked in the direction of two horses with riders approaching. One was clearly chasing the other. Richard barely managed to grab Sparticus by the scruff of the neck and dive out of the way as the two horsemen sped by at break neck pace.

"Watch it, boy!" One of the riders called behind him as he chased the first.

The first rider's horse suddenly pitched forward, throwing the misfortunate rider off. Without missing a beat, the thrown rider spun in midair, clutching something wrapped in cloth and landed on his feet.

Sparticus raised an eyebrow at the scene and sped off towards the riders, Richard following closely behind.

When they arrived, both riders with riding cowls drawn were circling each other, swords at the ready. Seeing Richard, the first rider called out to him "Catch!" as he threw the large bundle. "Guard it with your life!" The first rider then grasped his sword with both hands and with a loud cry, charged his pursuer.

The battle raged for minutes before the second rider gained an advantage in terrain and struck the first rider in the shoulder. The first rider seemed not to be fazed and as his opponent was pulling his sword from his flesh, he ran the second rider through the heart.

The second rider went down in a flash and with a howl, the first rider drove his sword hilt deep through the second, burying his sword through flesh and earth.

When the second rider was twitching no more, the first took his hands off the sword and grasped his shoulder, bent over and breathing heavily.

Richard and Sparticus raced over, concern on Richard's face. Turning and seeing the two approaching, the first rider stood tall and reached up to his cowl, drawing it behind his head.

Richard stopped mid stride to stare open mouthed at the rider. Not a man. But a woman. Tall and beautiful, with auburn hair filling the cowl.

"Sparticus." She said with obvious curiosity as to what he was doing there.

*Gives new life to thread*

"Ah, Patricia, how nice of you to come see me." The small cat mused and flicked his tail back and forth.

"Who is your friend?" The woman nodded to Richard who gulped, still holding the heavy package. "You aren't out picking up strays I hope?" She shook her head at the cat with a sigh and cut off a piece of cloth from her foe's tunic. She wiped the blood and dirt away and slid it neatly back into the scabbard on her horse.

*Dances on tip toes and pleads* Can I join!! Can I can I can I!?!

Richard took in Patricia's sword and gazed with envy. Her sword was of the finest quality and must have cost loads. His sword was old and plain. Not even a design on it. He sighedas she put it away.

'His name is Richard. He says he's a peasant," Spartacus said almost sneeringly.
"Well what's wrong with being a peasant!?! This peasant just saved your life ya cat!!" Richard snapped.
"Now boys don't make me come over there?" Patricia said menacingly.
Spartacus sat on his haunches and licked his left paw as Richard snapped his mouth shut.
"That's better. Now Richard I believe you have something for me?"

"Me?" Richard asked, wondering what he could possibly have of interest to her. "I-I'm sorry, Patricia...uh, Ms, Patricia," he stammered, "but I don't have anything worth your time. As he considered the few possessions he owned, he recalled one item that might be of interest to her. Perhaps it was what she had come here for in the first place. "Umm, wait, actually, Ms. Patricia," he began, "I do have one item that you may like to have a look at."

"Oh no," said Sparticus. "He doesn't anything you'd like to look at, Patricia! Nothing at all! Zip! Nada! Nothing to see here!" the cat interupted nervously.

"Sparticus,"said Patricia. "Don't play games with me." She glared at him in such a way, that he was certain he hadn't fooled her for a second. "Please, don't waste my time. Come on, Richard," she said, turning to the the boy, who was quietly waiting to be noticed again, his head held down timidly.

"Uh, yes Ma'am?" he replied.

"Call me Patricia," she said, with a smile he could not quite decipher. "Come on. Let me see it," she continued, seeming more impatient, and less gorgeous, each time it was mentioned.

Richard glanced at Sparticus, and decided to trust the look of warning the cat gave him. "I'm sorry Ma'am, but I don't know what you're talking about. Umm, very sorry. Honestly." he said, trying to sound normal. Lying wasn't exactly one of his special talents. He tended to sound extra polite when he lied, but it didn't seem she had noticed.

"Give it to me!" Patricia screeched.

"From 'let me see it' to 'give it to me'," said Sparticus. "Now that doesn't seem very polite Patricia!"

"Shut up cat!" she snapped back.

Patricia stepped toward Richard, who squeaked loudly, and she tore the bundle she had thrown to him away. She felt the bundle and peeked inside, checking to make sure it was still there. "Good..." she mumbled and looked up, scowling furiously. "You're not that incompetent, are you?!" Her eyes seemed to glow red. "I don't think you could forget that I gave this to you, not even five minutes ago?!"

Richard stepped back quickly from the woman, as Sparticus played nonchalant. "I told you. He's a peasant." He licked his paw, as he drew out, "A simple, brain-dead, useless," he flicked his tongue over his felinine lips, "peasant."

Richard was glaring at the cat, now furious himself. "WHA--" he started, cut off quickly by Sparticus.

"Now, now, peasant," he circled Richard coyly, "Let's let Patricia have her bundle and be on our way. You were taking me to the mountain in the east, yes?" Sparticus looked up at the dusk sky, his wings flicking back. "It's already gotten late..." He trailed off.

Richard wondered why Sparticus had lied and if he meant to make Richard actually take him through the mountains, to the one Sparticus spoke of. Richard looked at Patricia, who clutched at her bundle, looking at the cat sharply.

"Why are you going to that mountain?" she asked lowly. She added even lower, "They hate you there..."
