This is the last one I'll do in the thread. After this post, unless it is advice on how to create a more life like, realistic character, it shall be deleted. Please, PM me any questions about characters if you want an opinion. Send me a link or your full profile for me to read and I shall give what advice I can.

I have a character in a RP that is very shy, has a short temper, and had a tramuatic point in her childhood. But she can be sweet and loving, especially to her cat. Is this OK?

Trama helps to shape a character, and history helps to build a character up. History helps to show where your character has been, and why your character acts the way that they act. Every character should have a past, even if it is shrouded in mystery and only you (the creator and the character) know about it.

Shy and short tempered. Does she tend to walk out on people? If she is really shy, I wouldn't see her venting her rage in a shout or physcally. Determine how she would express her anger. Don't forget though, she might be shy, but how does she act around people she knows? Around strangers? If a friend is in need? Everyone acts differently with different people around them.

Being hard to everyone else and kind to her cat is a good touch. Most people, no matter how hard and mean they may seem, usually have something or someone that they are close and kind to. We all look for something we can love, and for her it is the cat. She shows affection and care for the cat to provide the relational need she needs. (Some of this is from phycology... might be worth a good read if you're interested in understanding what humans need for mental health.)

what about basing part of the charracter on yourself or someone you know really well. for example i don't like heights, can't i have my person not like heights because i know how they will feel and thus better fall into the character?

This is actually something I wanted to point out.

Yes. I would go with that. It is something you can personally relate to, so you can really get it right with your character. It gives you a weakness or flaw too. What happens if you have to flee from rooftop to rooftop? Will your character be able to? If in a scifi role play, could you board the ship that will save your life, or freeze up from fear?

Having things that you know about is a perfect way of making a character. You don't even have to think about what to do... you just know what they would do right then.

Most of my characters are based on a piece of several pieces of myself. I will sometimes take the smallest piece of myself, like say my anger. I'm not known for my anger in real life. But, if I stretch and enlarge this part of myself, I can get someone who snaps at people, cutting them off and being rude, as well a someone who probably would charge into a fight blindly. Each are things I would never do on my own, but if I was always angery and unable to control that anger, then I can see myself doing these things.
I'm still taking a piece of myself, but at the same time I'm taking it and changing it so it isn't me at the same time.
