Julian Sweet

Julian was a calculating man. He had added up everything he knew of Aphismet and decided it might be best he left. There was no way he could help someone with no ambition. The scientist lived on ambition. Standing up, he walked towards the door of the study as well, giving Aphismet more than enough room as he took the same journey.

"It was not a waste of time," he said lightly, reaching up a hand to hold the bridge of his nose. He suddenly felt a migraine coming on. "It was an experiment. The results were..."

A pregnant pause ensued.

"We should listen," Gage advised. He was rather reluctant to have the pair leave as well, especially when he was just figuring out how to involve the other Raevan in his "work", but allowing Julian to become upset would be a grave mistake. The intern had a temper like an active volcano.

"Interesting. I am involved in the field of science because I have no choice. It is almost carved into my flesh. You have to find something similar in feeling or you will fail. That is all."

Aphismet blinked in confusion and looked back at the other man, instead of berating Rivener as he had intended. "Because you have no choice?" That was definately something Aph was NOT expecting to ever hear coming out of Mr Sweet's mouth. "Y-you're a scientist because you don't have a choice? Do, do you mean you don't even LIKE being this, this... This?" Aph tilted his head in puzzlement, encompassing the entirety of the lab with his gesture.

He was unaware of the other man's waning temper. Hopefully, he wouldn't send Julian into a fit with all his inane questions.

"The only thing I don't have a choice about in MY life, is the fact that I need money to survive. My parents died when I was young, but not young enough to be in an orphanage, so I was out on my own without any money. I had to get a job instead of going to college, so there's my situation." He shrugged, trying to figure out what might be carved into his skin as Julian put it. "That's the only thing that drives me; money. The other thing, that isn't necessary but that I really really want to have, is happiness... I think if I had a job I could feel pride for, I would be happy. No?"

He'd paused near the door, and seemed to have gone off on another rambling think-out-loud tangent. He didn't seem to notice that he was doing it, this time.

Rivener lifted an eyebrow at Gage and whispered, not wanting to break the mood that was building. "Listen to what? To them talking?" How boring, he added without saying, but it was quite clear that he HAD said it.

The Frei floated back slightly to be out of range should anything suddenly be flung off a table. That Julian fellow was displaying a few classic Hollywood signs of "angry temper flare", or "resigned giving-up". And Rivener didn't think Julian was the type who would do the latter.

Julian listened to the words, completely silent although the way he clenched his teeth might have been reminiscent of a canine baring its fangs. Imagining a growl coming through that mouth would have been fully possible. There had never been any action of the intern's to suggest he was not dangerous, but he made no move to hurt the man disturbing the inner sanctum of his home. What was irritating him, cracking his delicate shell of control, was the smallest idea Aphismet thought that he knew nothing of...

"I have no intention of hearing your sob story. It happens. It only matters if you're able to overcome it. You may leave."

Infinitely displeased, the young man kept his eyes closed, refusing to give any emotion to the conversation. Julian very rarely possessed any form of sympathy.

Gage did not back off as Rivener did. He simply floated in place, confident only in that his guardian was far more likely to yell than to cause physical damage. A beat passed, and when the human began to speak his Raevan turned and made his way towards his kin once again. "They are arguing. Nothing to do about that."

The frei's gaze was strangely concerned, as though he thought maybe Rivener was worried over the situation. In the back of his mind, Gage certainly was.

Rivener sighed and rolled his eyes. "Aphismet is a spineless fool. I don't think I'd refer to that exchange as an "argument". It's more like Aph is making a complete a** of himself." The Frei was nowhere near worried. As a matter of fact, he could hardly care less if Aph got his head knocked in.

The Raevan decided he was done paying attention to that conversation, so he turned back to the vials behind him, examining them without touching. "I'm jealous; you get to play with all these, make things. I just watch TV all day."

Aphismet frowned slightly. He'd not been offering his sob story in that way! He... He was trying to forge some kind of connection with this new person, but he obviously didn't want such a thing. Aph sighed. His first impression of Julian seemed to have been right after all; a cold, emotionless machine.

"Fine," he replied sadly, but with a tone he might speak to a telephone receiver with. "Sorry to have disturbed you. Good luck with your stuff." He waved at the surrounding area, and turned once more to the door. "Rivener, come on," he said.

Strange, that once he had begun thinking of Julian as a machine, he didn't feel very scared anymore. (Although we all know he SHOULD.)

"Dammit," Rivener swore. "Ok, next time if you're gonna just drop in somewhere for FIVE MINUTES, don't bring me along, ok?" Riv hissed at his guardian as he floated over, frowning darkly.

"Bye, Gage. Wish I could have stayed longer," he said with a friendlier look.

Gage's emotions were sometimes hard to get a firm grasp on. Everything below the bridge of his nose was consistantly covered with a very opaque mask. Everything that could be seen would have to be taken into consideration when trying to fully understand how the radioactive Frei might feel. Even then, there were times he was simply not getting his point across in expression alone.

He was not sure how to properly explain how he felt when he heard Rivener berate his own guardian. Julian would never have tolerated that sort of behavior. In the end, he was silent until the other Raevan was just about to leave. Lamely, his hand waved and he offered a few quiet words, "I will see you again."

On the other hand, Julian might have had no emotions to read. As soon as the word "sorry" left Aphismet's lips, it was as though the other man and his frei had already left. They were out of the intern's mind, and almost entirely out of his study.

He was not in the habit of saying farewell.
