Neira followed Kara with more blue language of her own. Fired up she didn't take long to choose her option. "If you're up for it.. " she grinned somewhat, a look in her eye which was rarely seen these days : sheer exuberance. "It's a shame Jori isn't here.. we could do with her..." Neira pondered for a moment on a strategy as it would take more than brute force for two wolfs to take down a protective mother deer. Even if one of those wolves was as large as Kara was.

"Perhaps..." she began, wondering if she would be speaking out of turn. But no.. Kara had given her the choice and she wouldn't be especially useful if she could do only things she was told to do. "Perhaps... if one of us snuck around behind her and then the other went as if to snatch at the fawn... when the mother tries to defend and isn't paying attention the one behind her could run in. A bite to the belly or neck and she'd be dead soon enough with minimal effort - we wouldn't need to try to pin her. If.. you'd be willing to wait."

She let out a breath, nervous energy pouring out as she passed on her idea for the other wolf's inspection. She wouldn't have minded any corrections being made to it - she knew that was how to learn, but yet she hoped she could prove herself to Kara. This was the second time they'd hunted and something had gone wrong.... Neira's hip still ached from that first hunt...

Kara listened intently, her eyes never leaving the deer, but her ears focused on Neira. She wasn't sure if she'd want Jori here, but another wolf of any kind would be nice. She almost objected to the plan, knowing that if Neira got injured it would be her responsibility. But what if she got injured? What then, what did the pack do without an alpha? They would be helpless for the most part, and the deer might take two victims. Better she let the other do what she wanted, the plan worked better in her mind besides.

"Alright," she agreed, her muscles already tensing from anticipation. "You run distraction and I'll drag the fawn the river."

It was better if she did that, because otherwise mother deer would come after it again once she saw through their little plan. The river would cover up most of the scent and hopefully keep the deer away. Probably not, but at least if the scent was covered the deer wouldn't come looking. The deer would come following her though. Then it would get confused.

"Then, if that doesn't work, we'll kill her." There was truly no need to kill the mother, she produced generations afterall. Generations that would feed them and as much as she wanted to see Neira's plan in full, as an alpha she had a duty to protect future generations.

Neira nodded, a little bit dissapointed that she wouldn't get the chance to fulfill her plan but glad of her Alpha's foresightedness. She nodded quickly and moved to wait silently for Kara to get into position. This second attempt was a risk now that the mother was not only here but watching and Neira knew she'd have to be careful to dodge a painful or even debilitating blow. Once she saw Kara was in position she began...

Darting back and forward, low to the ground but not close enough for the mother deer to reach she began to worry the female deer. Teasing back and forward, not instantly going in to make a false grab. She knew if she did that she'd just be running into trouble. Instead she was taunting the mother deer, getting her worked up, angry, scared and, riled.

Sensing the moment was right, Neira darted in, all snarling teeth and deep growls, feinting towards the fawn. Things worked a little better this time... the mother, highly strung and tense, lashed out towards the wolf, moving farther away from her fawn than she might had she not been so worked up - almost chasing the wolf.

Neira moved with speed, turning and backing up, wondering if she'd given Kara enough time.

Kara watched with ears perked forwards. It was all waiting, and a bit of slinking. She couldn't move fast enough to alarm the mother, but she had to be close. The mother deer seemed to be buying it, following and striking with those deadly front hooves. Kara was glad she didn't have that task herself.

The doe was in such a rile Kara began to fear for Neira, but the wolf was much more agile than she looked. Even Kara doubted she could make such feins with such perfected skill and grace. The red was sure she'd simply end up on her rump. Shaking her head in an attempt to concentrate she waited just a moment more.

Kara lunged at that moment for the fawn, which gave a cry as she latched onto the already broken leg. The mother deer heard her for just a moment, and flicked back an ear, but she was still concentrating hard on Neira. The time it took the deer's brain to register the event and turn around, allowed Kara to whip up and behind a tree, dragging the fawn as fast as her legs could muster towards the raging river.

The mother deer was almost upon her when she simply jumped off the small cliff height, deer in toe. Kara knew the river well, sometimes far too well. It would carry her downstream quite a ways, but she'd have their prize, even if it was a bit soggy. But only if she landed just right.

SPLOOSH!

The rush of water around her head clogged her senses. She had to remain calm, and not try and breathe, as much as her body begged to. A brief glimpse of the sky caught her eye before she went barrelling under again and again. Her nose felt air, and she gasped for it, taking in sweet breaths. It was enough to prepare her for the next unslaught.

This went on for a time, until the soft brush of ground hit her fur. Instinctively, the red kicked out at the ground beneath, dragging her fawn carcass behind her. Even if the fawn hadn't been dead before hitting the river, she would have died of drowning not long afterwords.

Grunting, she crawled here way up the sand bank. One of the few gentler places on the river. Kara let herself slip onto her side and lay there, panting, but grinning with the pride of success.

Neira allowed herself only a moment of exultation. Kara had gotten their dinner but now the mother could see only one wolf - that Neira hadn't been the one to actually take her fawn didn't matter - she had helped. The enraged mother deer turned but the wolf was already heading off at a fast gallop, long legs covering the ground almost effortlessly, kicking up sprays of dirt behind her.

It had been too long since the female wolf had gotten to use her wits against prey, her speed, her agility. She had been laden with a pup barely upon achieving adulthood and had then been cast from her pack. She'd been through a bit for such a young wolf and it had made her seem old, used up. She was free of those burdens now - she had a ack, she no longer had to watch her daughter (ungrateful little runt! ah well, she had too much of her father in her anyway...)

Now she felt free, loose, she'd of all the bonds which had tied her down. With a grin on her maw she turned towards the stream, the mother deer far behind, heading after her alpha and their prey, wondering where the pair would be washed up. She hadn't known the tall red she-wolf would jump into the water but she knew Kara wasn't stupid and would have only done so with a plan in mind.
